Excel Workbook with Excel Data Model stored on SharePoint - daily refresh

I'm not sure if this is exactly the right forum but I'm hoping that someone here can either answer or point me in the right direction.
I have an Excel Workbook with an Excel Data Model.
The Excel Data Model uses SQL to contact our data warehouse and pull through data into tables.
We are storing the Workbook on a SharePoint site and viewing it using Excel Services.
The data in our data warehouse is updated daily and so I would like to refresh the workbook daily and remove the option to refresh the data in the browser.
Is this possible with a workbook that has an Excel Data Model (I've seen lots of posts that relate to workbooks with connections to tabular models).
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
I have answered this issue in this thread that you posted in SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint forum, please see:

  • Problem connecting PowerPivot's (Office 2013) Data Model deployed on SharePoint 2013 to data source.

    Hello:
    Our configurations is as follow :  SharePoint 2013 is on Server A;  SQL Server Analysis server (SQL 2014) is on DB Server B;
SharePoint databases (sp_ ...) and our Data Mart (SQL 2014) are on server B. All servers runs Windows 2012 OS.
On my desktop I built a simple Excel 2013 workbook with PowerPivot Data Model that imported several tables from our Data Mart (server B above). Then created a Power View report. Locally everything works fine.
But when I uploaded this workbook to our SharePoint PowerPivot gallery and was trying to refresh data, I got the connection error: It’s very long but the ErrorCode is “rsCannotRetriveModel”. The end of the error message is:
    'TemporaryDataSource'.</Message><MoreInformation><Source>Microsoft.AnalysisServices.SPClient</Source>

Our Excel Services on the SharePoint work fine and refresh data on different excel workbooks (with no Data Model) just fine.  We are using an unattended account for Excel Services to connect from SharePoint server to our databases. Found a few references
on the topic, tried them but with no luck.
    Please advise!

    Hi Jeff,
Firstly, I need to confirm whether you are refreshing Data connection in browser, since Data Refresh is not supported in Office Web Apps. Please refer more information in this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/excel_services__powerpivot_for_sharepoint_support_blog/archive/2013/01/31/powerpivot-for-sharepoint-browser-refresh-fails-data-refresh-not-supported-in-office-web-apps.aspx
From the error "Call to Excel Services returned an error", please verify the location of the
data source, for example an Excel workbook, is registered as a trusted location with Excel Services:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219699(v=office.15).aspx
Since you are using unattended account for Excel Services to connect from SP to databases, I wonder if the issue occurs to unattended referesh, if so, please refer to:

  • Open Toad Data Modeler diagram with SQL Data Modeler

hi, I've made a diagram with TOAD Data Modeler in Windows. Now I'm working with Linux, so I need a portable application to work with. Oracle SQL Data Modeler seems to be the solution to my problems, but I can't open/import my TOAD's diagrams into SQL Data Modeler.
Anyone knows how to do it?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Neuquino,
there is no import from TOAD Data Modeler. You can generate DDL script with TOAD DM and import that script.

  • Demantra - can it run with two Data Models in parallel?

    Hello,
we face the following situation: we have items that have to planned on a daily basis; many other items, however, only need weekly planning.
Demantra only allows one base time unit in its data model. If we choose "daily" for all products, the system size will increase enormously.
If we choose "weekly" for all products, we can not plan our daily products for specific days in the week.
The idea is now to set up a Demantra System with two data models in parallel. Is this possible? Would they reside in different databases or database users?
The Business Modeller allows to create new models, but can they run in parallel? If they can, how would the user access the different data models?
Thanks for any hints on this!

Can you please elaborate on this issue?
    Thanks

  • Powerpivot 2013 doesn't work on Excel 2013 / Office 365: data model issue

    Hi guys
I recently upgraded my Office 2010 to Office 365, with Excel 2013. Before installing Office 365 I uninstalled Office 2010. I'm running Windows 8 64 bits.
I have the Powerpivot 2013 add-in, I can activate it without any issue. However when I click on "manage" on any spreadsheet (including new empty ones) I have an error "We
couldn't load the Data Model.  This may be because the Data Model in this workbook is damaged.", followed by "PowerPivot is unable to load the Data Model".
I tried to repair the installation to no avail. I tried to launch excel in admin mode, nothing better.
This issue seems to be shared by some other people on this forum but
with no satisfactory answer so far.
I had a SQL server 2012 plugin installed previously which I uninstalled as well, but no change.
Would you think of something else?
    Thanks

  • Collaborate on Excel workbooks with Sharepoint Foundation

My company recently implemented SharePoint Foundation 2013 and our shared Excel workbooks are no longer allowing multiple users to collaborate at the same time. We have verified that all the settings and permissions are correct and that checking in and
checking out is not required. Is this something that is not available with SharePoint Foundation? We are using Office 2013 installed on the clients, not Office online. Thank you.

Co-authoring of Excel workbooks is only supported when all the editors are using the Excel web application, not the Excel client application.
    From
    Microsoft's overview of co-authoring in SharePoint 2013:
    >"Co-authoring is easy to use from the end user’s point of view. When a user wants to work on a document in Word 2013, PowerPoint 2013, OneNote 2013, Visio 2013 or one of the Office Web Apps, he or she merely opens it from SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint
Online, as usual. If another user already has the document open, both users can edit the document at the same time.
One exception to this is that users can co-author in Excel Web App only if everyone uses the Excel Web App to access the workbook. If anyone uses Excel 2013 or Excel 2010 (the client application)
to access the workbook, co-authoring in Excel Web App will be disabled for that workbook while it is open in the client application."
    >"The Excel 2013 client application does not support co-authoring workbooks in SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint Online. But, the Excel client application uses the Shared Workbook feature to support non-real-time co-authoring workbooks that are stored
locally or on network (UNC) paths."

The slowness you are experiencing is largely owing to the fact that the WebUtil package is running on the middle tier -- but the Jacob bean is running on the client. Loading a spreadsheet requires a lot of network I/O. To speed things up, implement your operation within a custom Java bean, in such a way that communication between the tiers is minimized. For example, write a Java class that receives all the data in one call, and understands how to write it to an Excel document. Deploy this class as a Java bean, and call it from your form as needed using FBEAN.INVOKE( ).
The catch: passing data through PL/SQL imposes the 32K-character limit for VARCHAR2. If you cannot be certain that the data to be written can be expressed as a string of this size, you must consider introducing compression, passing the data over multiple calls, or possibly both.
I've been working with this, using Java's GZIP libraries for compression, and Apache Axis' BASE64 function for binary-to-String conversion. Since I'm passing a complex data structure, I use open-source XStream to serialize this structure to XML, GZIP the XML string, Base64-encode and pass it along. Sounds awkward and cumbersome, but has worked fairly well so far.
The XML step may not be needed for simple tabular data, but because GZIP minimizes the cost of wrapping every value in tags, the incredible convenience offered by XStream makes it worth at least trying. (One call to marshall, one call to unmarshall.)
Sorry, but this is all I have time to write, at the moment -- hopefully it at least gives you an idea regarding the problem and possible solutions.

  • Combining multiple spreadsheets into one workbook with excel

Im working on a project that requires a workbook with all the raw and calculated data merged into one excel workbook. Currently I have all the sheets saved separately but for the life of me can't figure anything out from the examples i've seen so far. How would I Initially go about doing this?

Why save the spreadsheets separately?  Can you combine them from the gitgo using the Report Generation toolkit.  How are you collecting the data?  Is the data entry done manually or is it automated?  From your post, it seems you collect the data by some other means other than with LV, but you want to merge the data with LV, correct?
Take a look at the example finder if you haven't done so.

  • Information Broadcasting Excel Workbooks with Local Formulas

We are attempting to use information broadcasting to send out reports that use the v7 BEX "convert to local formula" feature in order to reformat the reports.  We can execute the reports, and even save them to a local client and review them later when disconnected from the server.    However, if we use information broadcasting to send these Excel files out as attachments, the users are unable to see the data unless they connect and refresh, defeating our entire purpose of putting the data in excel.
Has anyone else attempted to Information Broadcast BEX Excel workbooks while using the Local Formula mode provided with v7?  Were you successful?

  • Error message when opening a shared workbook with Excel 2007

    Hello,
We would like to share a workbook outside BW (by saving into a serveur).Since we use Excel 2007, we can't anymore open this workbook.
We have a message error (see bellow).
For your information, it was ok with Excel 2003.
When whe save the workbook in local disk and then copy from local disk
    to a serveur, it's ok.
    We use SAPGUI 7.10 support package 8, patch 1 Revision 1443 & BI 7.0.
    Best regards
    Nicolas Triqnuand

    hey Nicolas,
first of all, your error message is in French... not too many people out there will be able to understand. Eventhough I do understand French, it doesn't make much sense to me... BUT... in Excel2007 all macro's are by default disabled. When you enable them (you should get a "Security Warning" right under "the Ribbon"), your BI stuff should work again.
Just gave it a try, and it runs smoothly over here.
    Cheers,

  • Getting error while submitting data to excel workbook through excel services in InfoPath 2010

    Hi,
I have a requirement where in have to fetch the calculated values from the excel workbook through InfoPath 2010 form.
When I am submitting cell value to excel workbook using SetCellA1 by executing following action:
    "Submit using data connection: dataconnection"
I am unable to submit form. It is giving "there has been an error while processing the form" in the front end. I checked the event viewer and it displayed following exception:

I was successfully able to submit the form using InfoPath client but it is giving error in the browser.
Is there any way or configuration that I should do to resolve this issue.

  • Broadcasting a Excel Workbook with additional drilldowns

I am trying to broadcast a Bex Excel Workbook by drilling down on couple of characteristics.  The Underlying workbook has already been set NOT to refer to the Queries Global Definition.
So my problem is that when I broadcast this workbook after drilling down on the additional characteristics, it does not send it in the way I wanted, but it sends the workbook with whatever has been defined in the Bex Query (which is with no additional drilldowns).
I would like to know if there is way to add more drilldowns in the workbook and then distribute that workbook to the end users.

No we don't want to save the workbook, becuase this is for the end user who wants to add a drilldown and then would like to send the output to his/her own email.   Basically end user should be able to add drilldowns to the workbook in the way he wants and wants to schedule the workbook in background using Broadcasting.
