Executing Reports via Procedure/Function
Is it possible to execute a pre-define report created in report builder from a procedure or function outside of the report? I understand SRW.RUN_REPORT is used within a report, but I want to request a report to be executed and passed paramters via a batch proc or func?
Thanks.
I think you should be able to do it by executing 'RWCLI' command from the procedure. You can pass all the arguments for running a report with this command.

Status report from Procedure/functions
All,
I have procedures /functions in my database. I need to return a status value back to the call procedures/functions to report the sub_procedure/function executed successfully.
What is the status value if a procedure/function executed successfully? And what is the value for un_successful execution? Where I can get it from?
Thanks a lot!This is really a design choice that you have to make in your application. PL/SQL stored procedures / functions do not return any implicit status codes on there own. In your PL/SQL code, you can check the SQLCODE built-in function for the status of the last SQL statement executed, but this is hardly the same thing (and really designed for use in exception handlers).
You may choose to design you applications such that every call must return a status value. In this case, the values used to represent success or failure are up to you (I might suggest 0 for success and the error code - which will be non-zero - for failure). You can either use functions which always return a number (probably not a good idea to place this limitation on your application); you might design all stored procedures to return an output parameter which indicates success or failure.
But, in general, your client code should be designed to correctly handle all Oracle exceptions - if no exception is raised, then success, else failure. And your PL/SQL should avoid bad practices like exception handlers which trap WHEN OTHERS and don't re-raise the exception. -
Parameter index move while executing PL/SQL stored procedure/function
Hello, community.
Have a question for you. It looked like very easy to write some small JDBC-wrapper to handle stored procedure/functions call for Oracle.
Here is the code snippet of it:
import java.io.Serializable;
import java.sql.CallableStatement;
import java.sql.Connection;
import java.sql.SQLException;
import java.util.HashMap;
import java.util.Iterator;

Here is the problem.:

ResultSet rs = ((OracleCallableStatement) helper.getStatement()).getCursor(1);
procedure definition:
procedure search_diagnosis (l_res OUT dyna_cur,
in_search_string IN VARCHAR2,
in_search_lang IN VARCHAR2,
in_lang_list IN VARCHAR2,
in_diag_class_list IN VARCHAR2,
in_parent_id IN NUMBER) Procedure call has inner check that fail because of som strange reason:
in_search_string has 2 as index, that is correct. but procedure recieves is as number 3 in parameter list (what is in_search_lang). Other parameters are moved to. It seems like a cursor takes 2 places in definition. It's clear that if I put in_search_string as 1 parameter and cursor as 0 I'll get invalid parametr bindong(s) exception. So... any ideas why 2nd parameter is actually 3rd?
Thanks beforehand.hmm...moreover:
if we change procedure to function and call it in a simple way:
CallableStatement stmnt = helper.getConnection().prepareCall("begin ? := pkg_diagnosis.search_diagnosis(?,?,?,?,?); end;");
stmnt.registerOutParameter(1, OracleTypes.CURSOR);
stmnt.setString(2, pattern);
stmnt.setString(3, lang);
stmnt.setString(4, langs);
stmnt.setString(5, diagnosisClass);
stmnt.setObject(6, parentId, OracleTypes.NUMBER);
stmnt.execute();

HTH, Regards -
how am I to be able a user to grant access only to see a procedure / function without execute,compile,edit and drop?
Sorry GregV but thank you, are you sure you can only be done by setting a PC? Can not by giving them certain privileges of a PC?
PL \ SQL that we use a portable version.
So actually like this, user A is only used by the X, user A wants to provide read-only access to user B is only used by Y (another PC) to the procedures / functions held user A. How do you? -
Obtain procedure/function name being executed
Hi,
I'm wondering if there is any way to obtain a procedure/function name being executed in Forms 6i. I wrote a nice error handler :) and i would like to get this information somehow.
thanks a lot., Sandoryou can't get programatically the name of the running procedure.
do this:
PROCEDURE my_test IS
v_program_unit VARCHAR2 (100) := 'my_test';
BEGIN
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS THEN
my_When_Others (v_program_unit);
END;in your errorhandling you can use the name of the procedure for your error-output
try it

HOW TO EXECUTE A STORE PROCEDURE THAT RETURN MULTIPLE ROWS FROM A QUERY
I NEED TO CREATE AND USE A STORE PROCEDURE THAT IS GOING TO DO A SELECT STATEMENT AN THE RESULT OF THE SELECT STATEMENT IS RETURN IN SOME WAY TO THE REQUESTER.
THIS CALL IS MADE BY AN EXTERNAL LANGUAGE, NOT PL/SQL OR FORMS APPLICATION. USING FOR EXAMPLE ODBC AND VISUAL BASIC. WHAT I NEED TO DO IS ADD A DATA ACCESS LAYER TO MY APPLICATION AND I ALREADY HAVE IT DONE FOR MS SQL SERVER, BUT I NEED THE SAME FUNCTIONALITY ACCESSING AN ORACLE DATABASE.
FLOW:
1. VB CREATE A ODBC CONNECTION TO A ORACLE DATABASE
2. VB EXECUTE A STORE PROCEDURE
3. THE STORE PROCEDURE RETURNS TO THE VB APPLICATION THE RESULT OF THE QUERY THAT IS INSIDE OF THE STORE PROCEDURE.(I.E. THE STORE PROCEDURE IS A BASIC SELECT, NOTHING COMPLEX)
4. VB DISPLAY THE RESULT IN A GRID
FOR SURE I CAN DO THE SELECT DIRECTLY TO ORACLE, BUT FOR PERFORMANCE REASONS AND SCALABILITY, I'LL LIKE IT TO DO IT USING A STORE PROCUDURES
IS THIS POSIBLE?, HOW?
THANKSCertainly, it's possible. First, define a stored procedure that includes an OUT parameter which is a REF CURSOR. Then, call the stored procedure via ODBC omitting the OUT parameter from the list of parameters. IT will automatically be returned as a result set. Syntax for both is below...
CREATE PROCEDURE foo (inParam in varchar2, resultSet OUT REF CURSOR )
In ODBC:
{call foo( 'someData' )}

Regards,
Mónica.Hi Christian.
You could put the lines of your list in a table of type SOLISTI1 and then use the function module SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1 to send the content of this table. You have to fill the table RECEIVERS with the address you want to send the report to.
Hope that helps,

Execute oracle stored procedure from C# always returns null
Hi,
I'm trying to execute a stored procedure on oracle 9i. I'm using .Net OracleClient provider.
Apparently, I can execute the stored procedure, but it always returns null as a result (actually all the sp's I have there returns null)! I can execute any text statement against the database successfully, and also I can execute the stored procedure using Toad.
This is not the first time for me to call an oracle stored procedure, but this really is giving me a hard time! Can anyone help please?
Below are the SP, and the code used from .Net to call it, if that can help.
Oracle SP:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE APIECARE.CHECK_EXISTENCE(l_number IN NUMBER) AS
v_status VARCHAR2(5) := NULL;
BEGIN
BEGIN
SELECT CHECK_NO_EXISTENCE(to_char(l_number))
INTO v_status
FROM DUAL;
EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN
v_status := NULL;
END;
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(v_status);
END CHECK_CONTRNO_EXISTENCE;
C# Code:
string connStr = "Data Source=datasource;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=user;Password=pass;Unicode=True";
OracleConnection conn = new OracleConnection(connStr);
OracleParameter param1 = new OracleParameter();
param1.ParameterName = "v_status";
param1.OracleType = OracleType.VarChar;
param1.Size = 5;
param1.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
OracleParameter param2 = new OracleParameter();
param2.ParameterName = "l_number";
param2.OracleType = OracleType.Number;
param2.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
param2.Value = 006550249;
OracleParameter[] oraParams = new OracleParameter[] { param1, param2 };
OracleCommand cmd = new OracleCommand("CHECK_EXISTENCE", conn);
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.Parameters.AddRange(oraParams);
conn.Open();
object result = cmd.ExecuteScalar();
conn.Close();Hi,
Does that actually execute? You're passing two parameters to a procedure that only takews 1 and get no error?
Your stored procedure doesnt return anything and has no output parameters, what are you expecting to be returned exactly?
If you're trying to access V_STATUS you'll need to declare that as either an output parameter of the procedure, or return value of the function, and also access it via accessing Param.Value, not as the result of ExecuteScalar.
See if this helps.
Cheers,
Greg

Kill a stored procedure/function
Hi Experts,
I have requirement to kill or terminate the stored procedure/function through UI.
Is there anyway to kill or terminate the stored procedure/function in oracle.
Note:-it shouldn't impact the other running Stored procedures/functions.
Thanks in Adavnce!!!Some basics first.
You do not kill a procedure or function. You kill the process executing it.
The ALTER SYSTEM KILL SESSION command does not kill a process (session). It requests that process to terminate by communicating with the process via the SGA. If that process is in a synchronous kernel call (and waiting for that call to complete), the process is unable to even check the SGA, never mind respond to a kill-yourself instruction. Which means it cannot terminate itself.
User (application) code does NOT need the ALTER SYSTEM priv. That will be a very serious security violation. So if you do want to allow user code to make use of that priv to kill user sessions/processes, then you need to wrap that into a secure interface that user code can use. Such as a SYS owned KillUserSession() procedure, executing with definer rights, and ensuring the caller can only kill sessions that it owns (e.g. if caller is schema SCOTT, then only SCOTT sessions can be killed).
Last comment. Killing user sessions is kind of stupid. As that means you loose. You cannot design properly. You cannot code properly. And to establish some kind of sanity in processing, The Very Large Hammer needs to be employed. Killing sessions does NOT fix the problem. It treats the symptom. The problem is still there.
And to add a treat-the-symptom-by-killing-the-session button on a .Net (or any other) application? That is, IMO, four-letter-words epic lame.
What is the real problem? -
Help with Oracle packaged procedures/functions in JDBC
Up to this point I've pretty much used vanilla SQL calls for Oracle (with the JDBC thin driver).
However, I just received a PL/SQL script (that I didn't write) which I need to execute in a Java application (and get a result set). So I started looking at the Callable object. However, I'm having problems:
I'm trying to execute the following, piece by piece:
exec pay_balance_pkg.set_context('TAX_UNIT_ID','143') ;
select /*+ ORDERED */
ppf.employee_number,
ppf.full_name,
pdb.balance_name,
ppa.effective_date,
pay_balance_pkg.get_value(pdb.defined_balance_id, paa.assignment_action_id) amount
from
lots more SQL
Using a Callable statement, I can run the pay_balance_pkg.set_context('TAX_UNIT_ID','143') as "{call pay_balance_pkg.set_context(?,?)}" and set up the input parameters. It runs.
But the pay_balance_pkg.get_value(pdb.defined_balance_id, paa.assignment_action_id) attempt generates errors because of the implicit parameters (pdb.defined_balance_id, paa.assignment_action_id). I was assuming the previous call set up the "context" for these parameters. But it doesn't seem to in JDBC.
What's the solution for this?
Is there a way to just "run" the .sql file via JDBC or JDeveloper? Or do I literally have to parse out the PL/SQL and SQL from the file?Thanks for the reply.
It turned out that within that "large chunk of SQL", there was a package call that wasn't returning the expected results... which mucked up the rest of the SQL call.
Apparently it was a permissions issue in that the package didn't like to be called from JDBC; but would work fine out of SQL*Plus. Have you heard of this?
I ended up just throwing the first package call into an an anonymous PL/SQL block, and then doing the SQL call... both in SQLJ. Only because the app is throw-away. Otherwise I agree: it would have been better in a stored procedure/function. -
SSRS with Oracle Stored Procedures, Functions and Packages
Hi,
I am working on a BI project. Here we are using PowerPivot to access data from Oracle DB and generate reports. Currently Client generates Few reports using Oracle Stored Procedures, Functions and Packages. We need to move everything to PowerPivot, so
that user can generate all reports using same platform. But PowerPivot doesn'e support Oracle Stored Procedures, Functions and Packages. So we have decided to try those reports using SSRS.
I have no knowledge about using SSRS which will call Oracle function/stored procedures/packages for generating reports.
Can anybody help me in getting exact steps?
Please let me know if my question is not clear enough.
Thanks and Regards,
SSHi Visakh,
Thanks for the detailed steps. My next question is:
Is there any other way to develop such reports without using any development tool like Visual Studio? Our aim is to provide a self-serviced reporting platform where user don't need any technical knowledge.
I am sorry I have no knowledge about SSRS and Oracle DB.Can you please have a look at my Oracle function and let me know whether it's possible to execute this using SSRS? (I am pasting one by one as there is a character limit.

PL/SQL WEB Toolkit: Using BUTTON to execute PL/SQL procedure
I am trying to execute a PL/SQL procedure with a "SUBMIT" button from a WEB page. I have several URLs that execute perfectly, but I do not want endusers to have to type the URL themselves. I want to display a web page with multiple URLs in a drop_down list. User chooses a member of the list, clicks the "SUBMIT" buttom and that specific URL executes and produces the proper result. I am NOT a web developer, but this is what I've written sofar:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE html_list
IS
BEGIN
HTP.PRINT ('<html>');
HTP.PRINT ('<head>');
HTP.PRINT ('<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html">');
HTP.PRINT ('<title>Title of the HTML File</title>');
HTP.PRINT ('</head>');
HTP.PRINT ('<body TEXT="#000000" BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF">');
HTP.PRINT ('<h1>List of Valid URLs</h1>');
HTP.PRINT ('<p>Choose your desired URL from the list below.');
HTP.PRINT ('<FORM method="post" action="WHATEVER_COUNTS_WEB">');
HTP.PRINT ('<FORM method="post" action="REQUEST_OBJECTS?PARAM1=MY_SCHEMA_ID">');
HTP.PRINT ( '<SELECT name="URL">
<option value="http://asai01.ffxlab.net:8080/me_epg_dad/WHATEVER_COUNTS_WEB">Count of Rows in Whatever Tables
<option value="http://asai01.ffxlab.net:8080/me_epg_dad/REQUEST_OBJECTS?PARAM1=ME">Request Objects for MY_SCHEMA_ID
<input type="submit" value="Submit"/>
</SELECT>');
HTP.PRINT ('</FORM>');
HTP.PRINT ('</body>');
HTP.PRINT ('</html>');
END;
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been writing PL/SQL code since 1989, but have never had to execute code via a WEB page until this week.
Thanks so muchHi,
Welcome to Oracle Forums!
Please acquaint yourself with the FAQ and forum etiquette if you haven't already done so.
Always post code snippets enclosed in a pair of {code} tags as explained in FAQ
This Forum is dedicated to Oracle Forms. Unfortunately there is no Forum for WebToolKit that I know of. The closest is Oracle Application Express (APEX).
If you objective is to have the User Navigate to the URL clicked then the easiest way is to use anchor tag with href attribute
