Expand and Shrink window

Hey I am writing a program that expands and shrinks the JFrame that it is in but all the program does is expand the window here is my code:
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class expandAndShrink extends JFrame implements ActionListener
JButton expandButton ;
JButton shrinkButton ;
int x,y;
int x2,y2;
// constructor for TwoButtons
public expandAndShrink()
expandButton = new JButton("Expand");
shrinkButton = new JButton("Shrink");
expandButton.setActionCommand( "expand" ); // set the command
shrinkButton.setActionCommand( "shrink" ); // set the command
getContentPane().setLayout( new FlowLayout() );
getContentPane().add( expandButton );
getContentPane().add( shrinkButton );
expandButton.addActionListener( this );
shrinkButton.addActionListener( this );
public void actionPerformed( ActionEvent evt)
// check which command has been sent
x=200+x;
y=150+y;
if ( evt.getActionCommand().equals( "expand" ) ){
x2 = (int)(x * 0.1); // This cast is the same as a Floor function
y2 = (int)(y * 0.1);
x=x+x2;
y=y+y2;
this.setSize(x,y);
else{
x2 = (int)(x * 0.1); // This cast is the same as a Floor function
y2 = (int)(y * 0.1);
x=x-x2;
y=y-y2;
this.setSize(x,y);
public static void main ( String[] args )
expandAndShrink demo = new expandAndShrink() ;
WindowQuitter wquit = new WindowQuitter();
demo.addWindowListener( wquit );
demo.setSize( 200, 150 );
demo.setVisible( true );
class WindowQuitter extends WindowAdapter
public void windowClosing( WindowEvent e )
System.exit( 0 );
}

x=200+x;
y=150+y;The first thing you do is increase the values of x and y. Then you expand and shrink from there. Doesn't look right to me.

• Allowing a website to expand and shrink with a browser

I am working on a website and wanted to know how to let a
logo with butts right up to the left side of the screen but can
also shrink and strectch with the browser so it will always start
and end at the bottom and top of the browser.

Ask your boss, "How high is up?"
The notion that all the space on a page has to be filled is a
hallmark of a
rookie designer, whether on paper or screen. Your boss needs
to hire someone
with professional web design skills and then follow what he
or she suggests.
A boss who dictates things he or she has no knowledge of or
experience in is
going to end up with a disaster. The page you have created so
far is doomed
to failure. 20 layers?
(Please show this message to your boss & suggest he or
she log on here and
learn the realities of web design.)

• In iCal and Notifications on a notebook, is it possible to expand the notes window to make it easier to read and write notes?

In iCal and Notifications on a notebook, is it possible to expand the notes window to make it easier to read and write notes? In the past, I have used Outlook calendar and tasks and I was able to expand the windows which allowed me to put a great amount of details into either the notes section in events and tasks. It would be great to be able to do this in iCal and Notifications as well. I am using a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.8. Thank you very much for assistance with this.

Intel iMac; upgraded adobe flash; bluetooth keyboard no longer pairs but magic mouse still OK. With Bluetooth switched on the screen splits into 4 areas and open windows seperate and shrink. Switch off Bluetooth and problem disappears and iMac works OK with plug-in keyboard and mouse

Hi, Derek -
...the screen splits into 4 areas and open windows seperate and shrink.
Sounds like Spaces is being activated somehow. With the wired keyboard and mouse in use, select the Exposé & Spaces control pane in System Preferences, click the choice in that pane for Spaces. See what the settings are. There are some activation settings in that pane - by default, F8 activates it.
It could be that the bluetooth keyboard has some stuck keys and is activating Spaces; or that the activation command has somehow been reset to something that the bluetooth mouse, or bluetooth itself, is triggering.

• Are there hotkeys to maximize and shrink (not minimize) window/tab

Don't know whether this is a Safari question or a Mac OS question, but when I fire up Safari, the program opens up with roughly a 1/2 screen window. I've been mousing up to the upper r-h corner to maximize and shrink the window. Can't seem to find a hotkey combination that does the same thing. Is there one?
According to iTunes update, I'm using OS X 10.8.4 Don't know if that is 'Mountion Lion' or not. ??
As an aside, I'm a recovering PC user. Bought my first Mac (MacBook Air) a week ago, basically upon Rush's raving about them and the ease of use people tell me about them. I'm happily discovering all of what I've heard is true.

Aahhh, so THAT'S what the caret sign represents. The control key. I was playing twister on the kbd with shift-6, command f. Works better using the right keys. Thanks a bunch.

• Change the Colors of Expand, Minimize and Close Window Buttons

How do I change the colors of the Expand, Minimize and Close window buttons?
Red, green, and yellow are not conducive to red-green colorblind individuals, and the gray scheme in the Graphite appearance is too dull.

If the change in theme can do it, there must be an alternative.

• Expanding movieclip when mouse go out and shrinking it when mouse go in

Dear all friends,
I have movieclip called view_mc and button called btn_scale.
I want when the user click and drag the button btn_scale, he can scale the movieclip view_mc.
but when he goes out with the mouse, the movieclip is expanding.
and when he goes in, the movieclip is shrinking.
I have written the code, but it does the opposite: when he goes out, it shrinks. and when goes in, it expands:
var clickedX:Number;
var clickedY:Number;
var newScale:Number;
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, on_stage_down);
stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, on_stage_up);
function on_stage_down(e:MouseEvent):void
if(btn_scale.hitTestPoint(stage.mouseX, stage.mouseY))
clickedX = stage.mouseX - view_mc.x;
clickedY = stage.mouseY - view_mc.y;
newScale = view_mc.scaleX;
view_mc.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, on_enter_scale);
function on_enter_scale(e:Event):void
if(view_mc.width < restricted.width && view_mc.height < restrictedArr.height)
view_mc.scaleX = newScale * (clickedY / stage.mouseY);
view_mc.scaleY = view_mc.scaleX;
function on_stage_up(e:MouseEvent):void

Please help me to do the right scaling.

• Adding a link to expand and collapse all DHTML drop downs

Hi, can anyone help me adapt the "Skinny on Skins" example "Add a Toolbar button to expand and collapse all DHTML drop downs" so that it will work with just a simple HTML link in RH8, instead of being attached to a custom skin button?
The example looks like this:
Step 1. Open the Skins Editor for the skin where you want to add the button.
Step 2. After the preview loads into the window, ensure that the Toolbar tab has focus, then click the plus symbol. The Custom Toolbar Item dialog should display.
Step 3. Type the Item Name (This is simply an internal reference for the button).
Step 4. Type the Text (This is the text that will be seen by the end user. The field must contain something. So if you don't want any verbiage to display for your toolbar item, simply type a space.)
Step 5. Choose your Image Options, then click the Action tab.
Step 6. Click the JavaScript option button.
Step 7. Enter the following code in the OnClick field:
javascript:toggle()
Step 8. In the JavaScript area, ensure the Inline JavaScript option button is selected, then click the edit (Pencil) icon located to the right.
Step 9. Enter the following code in the Inline JavaScript dialog
var show = "false";
function toggle() {
parent.frames[1].bsscright.focus();
var arrayofDivs = parent.frames[1].bsscright.document.all.tags('DIV');
if (show == "false") {
for (x=0;x<arrayofDivs.length;x++) { arrayofDivs[x].style.display = "block";}
show = "true";}
else {
for (x=0;x<arrayofDivs.length;x++) { arrayofDivs[x].style.display = "none"; }
show = "false"; }
Step 10. Click the OK button to close the Inline JavaScript dialog.
Step 11. Click the OK button to close the Custom Toolbar Item dialog.
Step 12. Click the OK button to close the Skin Editor.
Step 13. Generate WebHelp via File > Generate > WebHelp and ensure that you have the new button selected with a check mark. This will probably require stepping through some screens to see the place where you can select it.
Many thanks
Jonathan

Hi again
I want to use it in the header of one of my Master Pages, so it will only be created/maintained once. Not all my pages have drop downs in so rather than have a toolbar button available for every page, I was trying to be a bit cuter by having two Master Pages - one for normal pages and one for pages with drop downs in.
I'm no javascript expert so I'll see if one of my developers can help.
Thanks anyway

• Fitting an SSD to the T420, and moving Windows to it WITHOUT a reinstall

Hi there,
I'd seen some threads around about the T420's suitability for an SSD in the WWAN slot. Well I've just received my T420, and had ordered one of the Intel 80GB mSATA SSDs. I spent this evening moving the Windows install from the 500GB hard drive to the SSD, and didn't need to reinstall. I don't know why Lenovo don't offer the SSD as an option!
So I bought the 80GB Intel mSATA SSD from Ingram Micro; you can just fit it into the wireless WAN (i.e. 3G slot) in the T420 - took about 5 minutes, and you just have to tuck the aerial leads out of the way when you put the bottom back on. The BIOS detects the SSD without a problem.
M'colleague Pete suggested the trick to avoid a reinstall of Windows 7. In brief, we shrank the HDD's Windows partition down to 50GB, created a mirror of it on the SSD, then rebooted off the SSD and removed the mirror.
In some detail:
1) make a recovery disc before you start (I didn't but I know this stuff!);
2) defragment your C drive (right click under My Computer, go to Properties->Tools and choose defragment). Took about 45 minutes to finish on mine;
3) go to Computer Management -> Storage -> Disc Management;
4) right-click both the SSD, and the internal hard drive, and convert both of them to Dynamic Disks
5) right-click the larger of the two windows partitions on your hard disc, and shrink them to the size of your SSD (i.e. 74GB if you want to use the whole SSD for Windows) - wait for that to complete;
6) create a mirror of the first two partitions on the hard drive, mirroring them to the SSD (i.e. right-click each partition, click Add Mirror, and choose Disk 1 as the destination);
7) wait for the mirrors to complete (i.e. the Rebuilding... message will go away).
8) start an administrator-mode command prompt (go to Start, type "command" and click the "Command Prompt" option while holding ctlr+shift);
9) type "bcdedit /enum" and note the long number associated with the SECOND boot option. Then type "bcdedit /default {xxx}" where xxx is the number. For good measure type "bcdedit /timeout 2" to make sure you see the menu and can fix a mistake manually;
10) reboot the system - before it comes back you'll see the windows boot loader menu - choose the second option (should be the default), which is to boot off your SSD
11) when windows comes back up, you can go back to the Disk Manager and choose "Remove mirror" for disk 0, and you can reclaim the space. Hooray!
That is about the minimum that you need to do to move the partition and get it to boot.
I wasn't sure how to tell windows to install a bootloader on the SSD, and completely disengage the hard drive from the boot process, but I'm sure someone will fill me in.
NB I've not tested the above sequence PRECISELY, as I had some further fiddling to get my Linux installation to work, which isn't relevant to the above trick. I'd be interested to know if it works for someone else - as I said, please make sure you have your recovery DVDs and backups handy just in case.

You could have used Intel's Clone tools. My experience is that you are better off following the prescribed method of using the rescue disks to do a reinstall. The system seems to boot faster that way.

• Firefox restores (expands) all reduced windows from the Taskbar everytime I select "Open In A New Window" for a link.

• How to stretch and shrink with browser resize

Is there a simple way to force stretch and shrink all
components and text as the browser window resizes? I tried 100%
width and height in the application tag but that only resizes the
main container. I want to also resize eveything inside the main
container and all the subcontainers including all text and all
graphic objects. With SVG this was simple. I also tried the
"Resize" effect but again that just resized the container and not
the elements inside the container. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

Each child container is based on it's parent container. So if
you set a child height and width to 100%, it will stick to the
height and width constraints of the parent container. In other
words, you have to set the constraints from the top most parent
container, down to the bottom container and components. See this
slight modification of your example below. Setting both panels to
height/width = 100%, both panels resize accordingly as the window
is resized.
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
creationComplete="onResize();" resize="onResize();">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
[Bindable] public var thisWidth:Number;
private function onResize():void{
thisWidth = this.width;
if (this.width >= 1020){
pnl1.setStyle("fontSize", 10);
if (this.width < 1020 && this.width >= 500){
pnl1.setStyle("fontSize", 8);
if (this.width < 500){
pnl1.setStyle("fontSize", 5);
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:Panel title="Panel 1" width="100%" height="100%"
id="pnl1" fontSize="10">
<mx:Panel title="Panel 2" width="100%" height="100%">
<mx:Canvas width="100%" height="100%">
<mx:Button label="Submit" horizontalCenter="0"
verticalCenter="0"/>
<mx:Label text="{thisWidth}" right="10" bottom="10"/>
</mx:Canvas>
</mx:Panel>
</mx:Panel>
</mx:Application>
Changing the font size is not as easy. All I can think of is
setting the font size based on the current size of the window, as
in my example above.

• Panel isn't expanding with the window

Hey,
I am writing a Sudoku program, and well I haven't really done anything yet. All it does is draw the board (9x9 grid) on a Panel, then the panel is added to the Applet. Thing is, the Applet is set to a 550x550 size, but the Panel doesn't expand with it. It's stuck at the default(?) size. The TextFields (the grid) expand with the window, so only a few are shown on the screen. A screenshot can be found here -> http://i46.tinypic.com/2wnzqtu.png
Here's the code:

• [VHD] Expandable VHDX Disk Remains Expanded and Cannot Be Compacted

Hello,
I've noticed that one of my VHDX virtual disks storing Windows Server 2008 R2 and attached to a virtual machine remains expanded and consumes maximum space assigned on creation even when this virtual machine is turned off.
The diskpart confirms disk is expandable:
Notice, the VDisk 1 pointing to the win2008r2dc.vhdx file is expandable.
However, looking at the disk size in Windows Explorer shows that the disk remains expanded to its maximum capacity even though it's not in use (I've detached the disk before viewing the disk files in Windows Explorer):
The disk highlighted in blue allocates all 100 Gbytes! You may see here that there's another one 100 Gbyte VHD disk (not VHDX one) --- the win8rp.vhd storing Windows 8 Release Preview, which is also used in a virtual machine,--- is allocated to roughly
67 Gbytes although it's an expandable virtual hard disk drive with a limit of 100 Gbyte.
Why does the win2008r2dc.vhdx allocate all its size and does not collapse to its actual size? I've checked the drive with scandisk and it does not show any errors.
Thank you.

Thank you.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...
I found that large VHDX files (64TB allocated) will grow but I use smaller ones for VDI VMs.
if you need to run with lots of VHDX files, you are advised to get lots of storage, lots of it

In Mail, the spelling and grammar window that pops up for correction when an email is sent is the size of the entire screen. How do I shrink it to allow the drafted email to show as corrections are proposed?
