Exporting 3:2 aspect ratio ntsc avi

Hey can anyone tell me how I can export 3:2 avi from FCP 5? It seems it will only let me export 4:3 in ntsc

more info needed, what codec are you outputting to? what is the frame size? what is the pixel aspect ratio? how is it being delivered?
needless to say 3:2 is not a typical "pro" broadcast aspect ratio ... rather, 4:3 is a typical for SD, 16:9 for HD
if you're a self-help 'explore my options' kind of guy, then have a look at the Export > Using Quicktime Conversion >> Format: AVI >> Options and/or Export > Using Compressor

  • Exporting 1080i, Pixel Aspect Ratio Problems

    Hello everyone,
I've been dealing with a lot of different format projects recently: SD, HDV 720-24P, and HDV 108050i.
For now, these projects are intended for internet delivery. I've not had too much problem exporting the SD and HDV 720-24P projects, but the HDV 108050i has been very frustrating.
When I export SD and HDV 720 in compressor, I set the pixel aspect ratios to NTSC and square, respectively. But when I try to set the pixel aspect ratio for the 1080i to "1080i 16:9" (which I believe is 1.333:1), it rejects my choice, choosing "default" instead. When compressor finishes exporting, my 1080i movie looks very squished horizontally.
The only success I have had is in exporting via Quicktime conversion, where I duplicate my compressor settings, but do nothing to the pixel aspect ratio (since there is no option to change it in quicktime, it seems). The movies I have exported with Quicktime have been fine. I don't know if it makes a difference, but when I try to export these 1080i clips, I am in the proper 1080i "easy setup."
I know almost nothing about this pixel aspect ratio business, but I believe it is the cause of my problems (since I am using the proper 16:9 aspect ratio for movie width x height).
    My Questions:
    1. If I am understanding the problem correctly, how do I get compressor to acknowledge the right pixel aspect ratio for my 1080i footage, rather than the incorrect "default"?
    2. If am not understanding the problem correctly, what might be going on?
    3. Can anyone point me to a useful resource about pixel aspect ratios? I've been searching the forums and online, and I thought I was getting a grip on things but it seems I am still way over my head. For example, what is the significance in Final Cut Pro of changing your viewer or canvas to not show square pixels? Do you need to format for square vs. non-square depending on the final delivery destination (not the source format)?
    Thanks!

Sorry to bump, but any ideas?

  • Why when I export does my aspect ratio change?

My camcorder is a Canon HDV 30 and any time I export a Quicktime movie using either current setting, compressor native or 1920/1080, the aspect ratio gets messed up...typically going 4:3.
Does anyone know what export setting you use so that the exact resolution and aspect ratio the camera shoots in...gets exported as that.

Ok, that makes sense. In fact I just did an export using 1440x1080 and it worked out perfectly. Thanks very much for all the information.
Just as a side note, what does it mean to display it as 1920x1080 when it's shot in 1440x1080? Why doesn't it display it as 1440x1080?
    Thanks Tom,

  • Exporting to WMV: Aspect Ratio Issue

I am working with .mts files on Final Cut Pro 5 that need to be exported as WMV files. The original files are 1440 x 1080 and I convert them to .mov using Voltaic. Everything works fine in FCP, but then when I export them using Quicktime Conversion, the aspect ratio gets funky. I set it to Custom: 1440 x 1080, yet when I play it back in either Finder or Quicktime, it plays in the wrong aspect ratio, at 4:3.
Is this something that I'm doing wrong - a wrong setting or wrong aspect ratio? Or is that just how it plays back in Quicktime?
Also, any recommendations for settings to get the best quality? I've been doing two pass VBR; what's the best bit rate to use?
    Thank you in advance!

I copied the images into PS and layered them with transparency. All of the images are stretched on what appears to be their long dimension.
I'm guessing it is an incompatibility between "Matt's Multi Photo Grid" template and LR 3.5, but the template works fine on my Windows Vista 64bit system with LR 3.5.

  • Export Frame - Pixel Aspect Ratio

The video in my timeline is 720 by 480 (1.2121). When I clip on "Export Frame" in the program window it exports a jpg that is 720 by 480 (0.9091)
I know I can right click on it and "modify - Interpret footage" and correct the pixel aspect ratio.
My question is "Why is it doing this and how can I correct it"?
Is their a setting I'm missing? Why does it change the pixel aspect ratio?

The jpeg is not square. The pixel aspect ratio would be 1 and not .9091, if it were.
I have two computers. On one the "Export Frame" exports the jpeg with the same pixel aspect ratio.
The other machine changes the pixel aspect ratio from 1.2121 to .9091.
I can't find any differences in my settings.

  • FCP exporting 4.3 aspect ratio to compressor

I am exporting a project in 16.9 aspect ratio to compressor and it is outputting a file that looks like 4.3.  In the inspector it reads project as 16.9, any suggestions?
    Catherine

I know it is displaying 4:3 video correctly, however I'd prefer if there was some stretching (non-linear) so that it fills the entire screen. Having 2 big black bars on either side gets very annoying. There doesnt seem to be an option to fill the entire screen when streaming from the apple tv. There are options when streaming from Samsung's own software (I don't want to use samsungs pc share manager as the apple tv's user interface is much better).
Are my options restricted because the signal is transmitted through an hdmi cable? Seems to be what other websites might be suggesting.

  • Export from Motion/Aspect ratio in Quicktime

I have created my first HDV (1080i60) graphic in M3. When I export as a quicktime movie, the preview that M3 generates at the end of the export looks perfect - when I open that movie in Quicktime, the whole thing is squished together. I assume this has to do with pixel aspect ratio - I just can't figure out where the fix is here because the pixel aspect is obviously set correctly in my Motion project (1.33) Is there a setting in quicktime that I am missing that is causing the playback of my Motion animation to appear squeezed?

Yeah, sorry, I should've included that the inspector in Quicktime says that both the "Normal" and "Current" sizes are 1440x1080. This is no huuuuggggeee deal, I just wanted to show some people the graphic using just quicktime. I eventually am going to import this into an FCP sequence, but I would like to have this portable version to show on quicktime.
+Quicktime maybe doesnt see this and is showing it at the correct pixel size without adjustment+
Not sure what that comment means - the correct pixel aspect is the one coming from Motion (1.33) Is there really no way to just bring this project into quicktime and play it properly - without looking squeezed? I feel like I should be able to find some preference in quicktime that lets me switch from viewing square pixels to viewing anamorphic pixels.
    Thanks a bunch Adam.

  • How do you export a Pixel Aspect Ratio Corrected Image? (CS5)

I have a still pulled from Premiere Pro CS5, but it's in DVCPRO HD Pixel Aspect (960x720) I pulled it up in photoshop, which corrects it for preview purposes, but I want to export the corrected (1280x720) Image... The only way I've found so far is to create a new document with the corrected Aspect and drag the image to it, then export it... BUT I have a bunch of images to pull from these videos, is there a simpler way?
    Thanks,
    Aza

    Aza,
There are two "Aspect Ratios" with many Video Images.
First, one has the Aspect Ratio of the Image - what you listedwith the 960 x 720. That is the width (in pixels) and the height (in pixels).
Then, there is the Pixel Aspect Ratio. Many Video Images do not use Square Pixels (PAR = 1.0), but instead a Pixel Aspect Ratio. This will be something like PAR = 1.212 (SD Widescreen), PAR = 0.9 (SD Standard), etc..
With a non-Square PAR, PS will display the Image with Square Pixels, as the computer uses Square Pixels. It will then warn you, that the display is in Square Pixels.
What is the PAR, that you wish to use? This can be altered via Image>Pixel Aspect Ratio, and PS will honor that, if you Save_As PSD, TGA, and several other formats, that support non-Square Pixels. What format do you need?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Does export size alter aspect ratio?

Hi, I asked a smilar question in the imovie community but thought it would be better here.  Though the nuance of this question is a bit different...
I created a montage of old pictures and video clips in iMovie '11 and need to eventually create a DVD in 4:3 aspect ratio.  I exported the movie in 1080p (1920X1080).
    a few questions:
    1. Does the HD export size matter and will iDVD try to sqeeze the widescreen format into a 4:3 ratio?
    2.  Should I instead export it as large 960X540 to prevent problems when I make the DVD?
    3. How does export size affect the ultimate aspect ratio? ( saw some similar posts but not really what I need to know)
    thanks

Since you're using iMovie 11 use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option and, yes, select the Large size.
Do not use the Share ➙ iDVD option since that throws away every other line of the movie resulting in a greatly reduced image quality.
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • FCP export to iPhone aspect ratio changes 16:9 to 4:3 Help!!!

I have been having this problem a lot lately I need the 16:9 aspect ration for iPhone but exporting through quicktime like I have for the last year now gives me 4:3 i don't know when this happened, obviously from a software update but I haven't done an iPhone export for a bit.
Old way of exporting to iPhone
    File>export>Quicktime conversion>iPhone = iPhone.h264 file in 16:9
New way to get the same thing
    File>export>Quicktime Convesion>Quicktime Movie
Then Open the Quicktime movie outside of FCS in the stand alone Quicktime Program and re-export
    File>Export>Movie to iPhone
extra work where there used to be none any help with this???? Very Annoying!

Open the file in QuickTime Player. Press command and J keys together.
In the pane that opens, click on the "Presentation" button then on the "Conform Aperture to:" checkbox.
It should automatically select "Clean" and your movie will change to widescreen format (you can always choose this manually if it doesn't happen automatically).
Save your movie -or "Save As.." if you prefer to make a copy, as opposed to overwriting the original.

  • ASPECT ratio of AVI files

I have AVI files shot on a widescreen camcorder as 16:9. They show OK in WMP, but Photoshop Elements 6 Organizer shows then as squashed 4:3, in both thumbnail and when played. This is driving me nuts - is there a solution? I have widescreen Quicktime files from a 'stills' camera that show OK.
Premier elements shows the files OK.

  • FCS2 export to iDVD aspect ratio problems...

Hi all. Usually would use DVD studio but just wanted a quick test from iDVD. Pretty recent version but can't get 16:9 exports from FCS2 to show in a 16:9 iDVD project. When you play the film it is always 4:3. Any suggestions?

I use a program (script actually) called anamorphisizer.

Drop your file onto that scrip and then take the resulting file into iDVD.

  • What Sequence Setting for 4:3 Aspect Ratio?

Just moved up from FCE to FCS2. Do commercials for small market cable and broadcast in SD 4:3 in FCE. Now in FCP I see a sequence setting for Frame Size Aspect Ratio NTSC DV that shows 3:2 aspect. Not really clear on what this is and after pouring through the manuals and searching this forum, still don't get it.
In the end, I want normal SD 4:3 TV commercials. In FCE, it was a simple NTSC setting. Does my sequence in FCP need to be 4:3 or 3:2? Need a little education on this and can't find any explanation anywhere.
    Thanks for the help.

What format is your source? I would never export out of FCP in that manner to achieve a frame rate conversion.
There are a couple of ways to change your footage from 23.98 to 29.97. The easiest I feel, is to select all the clips in your 23.98 sequence using CMD+A. Then copy (CMD+C),create a new 29.97 sequence and paste (CMD+V) those clips into your new sequence. Render and export a Quicktime Movie, Self-Contained.
However, I'm curious if you're shooting in HD based on your 23.98 frame rate. If you are, then you should be using a better SD sequence than DV which is 4:1:1 color sub-sampling. You may be throwing away half of your color information by working in that format.
    Andy
    Andy:
Using your method of copy/paste to a new 29.98 sequence solved the problem. Thanks.
What I had done to try out the new features in FCP vs. FCE was to create a 23.98 timeline (since I am shooting in SD 24pa with a DVX100A), add a Motion Master Template, add a few jpg's to the drop zones, add 3 NTSC-formatted jpg's to the end for the logos, add a Soundtrack music bed.
For future commercials, will likely be shooting 24pa footage, so wanted to figure out working in a 23.98 sequence. Just had not understood how to get it back to 29.98 for the cable company and broadcast stations. Your advice (copy to new sequence) makes it simple. Hopefully based on this info, I am still on the right track to accomplish my goal. I want to get the 24p look for some clients, but deliver the finished spots via upload to the stations' servers in a QT MOV.
If you have any other advice that would improve things, ready, willing and able to listen. Been Mac-ing since Mac Plus days, but new to FCP. Made the switch from Express with the access to 24p shooting. Thanks.

  • Getting my aspect ratio right

This is an extremely basic question but I've been researching and trying various settings and haven't found the perfect solution.
I am making DVDs for film festivals and I want them to play back on any television. (If this is at all possible?)
I am editing in FCP. The footage is SD, frame size 720X480, anamorphic is checked off.The footage was shot with a Panasonic 100B in 24PA. The film is 52 minutes long.
My first step is to export a quicktime movie of my project -- I realize I can go directly into Compressor from my FCP timeline but I like to keep a full res QT of all my cuts. (Could this step be creating any problems?)
Then I import the QT movie into Compressor.  I have tried 2 different settings. The first is this one:
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
        Usage:SD DVD
    Video Encoder
        Format: M2V
        Width and Height: Automatic
            Selected: 720 x 480
Pixel aspect ratio: NTSC CCIR 601/DV (16:9)
        Crop: None
        Padding: None
        Frame rate: (100% of source)
        Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
        Start timecode from source
        Aspect ratio: 4:3
        Field dominance: Automatic:
             Selected Bottom first
        Average bit rate: 6.6 (Mbps)
        2 Pass VBR enabled
            Maximum bit rate: 7.8 (Mbps)
        High quality
        Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
        DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
I import the file into DVD Studio Pro, put it on a track, and burn the disc.
The ensuing disc plays back perfectly on my computer but is horizontally stretched on my widescreen TV.  (People look fat). The quality of the disc is not as high as I would like (footage looks much better in FCP) but I don't want to risk it not playing back correctly if I increase the bit rates.
So, I tried another set of settings, which was exactly the same as above, except I changed the Aspect Ratio to 16:9.  This made sense to me since my film is 16:9
The simulator on DVDSP plays the movie back stretched.  When I play it on my computer it is stretched.  On my TV it is also stretched.
I'm wondering if there is any way to ensure that the film is going to play back properly on any TV?  Thanks very much in advance for your help.

I just read this (posted one year ago) and am wondering if people agree:
There is an actual issue with DVDStudio Pro that is documented on Apple's support site. However, they do      not provide a solution that works for me. It sounds like exactly the issue your having. The issue is that      some DVD players don't actually play DVD's properly ... IF: They have 16x9 content and are created with      DVDStudio Pro or iDVD. They don't list which ones.
I found this looking to resolve my problem, which was a little different. I made sure every setting in DVD      Studio Pro (and there are lots of them) was set to display as 16:9. I encoded the actual file via Compressor      and made sure it was set to 16:9 as well. When I play the files on my Mac, they all look good and on a PC      it looks good (properly displayed as 16:9). When I play it on my Sony DVD Player through my Samsung      16:9 TV, No luck. It squishes the image. I get letterboxed content, but squished. I play the same      DVD on my Samsung DVD/Blu-Ray Player, looks good (properly displayed at 16:9). When I play      it on my Panasonic DVD player on a Sony 4:3 TV it looks good (I get letterbox and it's not squished). I      didn't even think to try the others because the Sony DVD player was the one I normally use and wouldn't      have thought it would be an issue.
So the problem for me is that I don't feel that I can confidently produce DVDs out of DVD Studio      Pro that will play on all DVD players (or at least as reliable as major manufactured DVDs).
If this is true and there is no way to get my DVDs to play right on all dvd players, I'm going to continue to compress in Compressor under the settings I posted above, because that's what allowed me to play the DVD back correctly on my computer, and just hope for the best when programmers play the dvd back.

  • Problem with 16:9 aspect ratio!

I recently shot a film in 16:9 using a Canon XL2, DV NTSC, 720x480, 23.98 fps. Now, after editing my whole project in FCP I am ready to make a DVD. So, I export it using compressor and when I go to view the video file it is all stretched sideways.
The ONLY way I have come up with of making it not look stretched is by compressing it in 4:3. This, of course, does not help me in making a DVD because the moment I put it in DVD pro it is stretched out again to be 16:9.
    This is baffling me.
Somebody please help me. I have a deadline to finish this film TOMORROW and I'm at a complete loss. I'm sure it's something very simple that I just haven't thought of yet, but I've spent hours on this problem and I'm tearing my hair out!

The resolution of the output file is definitely 720x480. Also, as far as it not being true Anamorphic 16:9, that was the first thing that crossed my mind. As I had remembered, the XL2 does indeed shoot in Anamorphic 16:9 rather than just letterboxing a 4:3 image.
One interesting thing that I noticed is that if I go into the Sequence settings and check the box that says anamorphic 16:9 then it will do the exact same thing in the canvas as it does when I export (it stretches it out).
Here are all of my settings, if that will help you folks out:
    Capture preset:
    Using DV for video input
    DCR-TRV900 using NTSC
    23.98 frames per second
DV - NTSC at Best quality
    24 bits per pixel
    720 by 480
    Sequence settings:
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Aspect Ratio: NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel aspect ratio: NTSC CCIR 601 / DV(720x480)
    Field Dominance: Lower (Even)
    Editing Timebase: 23.98
    Quicktime Video Settings:
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Quality: 100%
    Clip settings:
    Format:
    Vid Rate: 23.98 fps
    Frame Size: 720x480
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Data Rate: 3.6 MB/sec
    Pixel Aspect: NTSC CCIR 601
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
    Alpha: None/Ignore
    Composite: Normal
I've tried multiple different settings in Compressor and no matter what I change it gives me the same unfavorable result. At this point, I'm not sure where the problem lies (Compressor? DVDSP? FCP?). I've done the same with DVDSP, switching settings around and nothing has helped.
Any more input you folks can give me will be very much appreciated. If you need any more specs from me I'm more than happy to provide them. Thanks!
