Exporting a movie as an image sequence... cropped?

I've created a short sequence (4 seconds) in iMovie '09 that I am trying to export as an image sequence for insertion into a stop motion animation I'm creating with QuickTime Pro.  The movie segment has been created with an aspect ration of 3:2 from TIFF images that are 1620 x 1080.
I can export the short sequence as an H.264 movie at the proper aspect ratio, but when I export as an image sequence, the individual frames are cropped on export to an aspect ration of 16:9.  The images aren't stretched, they are cropped, and I can't figure out a way to get the QuickTime exporter in iMovie to export still images that are true to the dimensions and aspect ratio of the movie that appears in the iMovie project pane.
I'm not entirely sure, but it's as if iMove is picking up settings for the aspect ratio from previous project.
To workaround the problem I'm expoting an H.264 movie from iMovie, opening this movie in QuickTime Pro, then exporting the individual frames as an image sequence of TIFF files at the desired dimensions and aspect ratio.  Needless to say, the resulting frames are losing considerable image quality passing through each of these steps.  The sorry-can't-use-em cropped frames directly from iMove are adequately clear, but with the added step of making (and compressing) a movie, then exporting the frames from QT the image quality suffers.
As an aside, you'd think I could just paste the movie exported from iMovie into my animation sequence in QuickTime Pro, but I get a video glitch at the point that the iMovie originated sequence begins.
Any idea how to get iMove to not crop frames that have been imported at the same 2:3 aspect ratio as the project properties?
Thanks!
John

I would have them all unchecked, you could use Best, but I'm not too sure if that would slow up the export with unnecessary processing.
Also check your project settings match your original codec.
QT would do the job too.

  • How do you export a movie to an image sequence in iMovie 10.0.4?

    Hi,
    I'm trying to create an animated gif.  In order to do so I need to export my short two-second movie as a sequence of .jpg's or .png's.  This was possible in earlier versions, but I can't find it on this one.
    I'm using an iMac with OS 10.9.4 running iMovie 10.0.4
    If it isn't possible in iMovie 10.0.4, is there another way to create a sequence of images from a short movie using native tools?
    Thank you!

    I see.
    I know that QuickTime Pro can do it.
    https://www.apple.com/quicktime/extending/
    But that's a $29.99 purchase.
    Not sure about the regular QuickTime Player 7
    QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later
    There's also something called Movie2Picture in the Mac App store that I think will do it, but I have no experience with it.
    Lastly, check out MPEG Streamclip it's free and I bet it will export to an image sequence, though I haven't tried it.

  • Export problems multiple movieclips to image sequence

    For our customer we made several flash animations. My output has to be image sequences for Cinemascope format. The export function in Flash for image sequences does not work! All my images are the same frame. This is frame 0 on the timeline. So the embedded movieclips wont playback.
    When exporting a Quicktime movie, some frames are skipped and missing in the output! So the export options in Flash are totally not working for my situation. We bought an application SWF to image but also here are some frames missing in the export. I can not relay on Flash and this application.
    The project is built like this: we made several movieclips and scaled them and put them in position. Then we made one new movieclip with all the earlier made movieclips inside. Then scaled the entire movieclip to the Cinemascope stage size.
    Are we using Flash in a wrong way here?
    Why does the exports functions don't work on my project? (built in movieclips won't play, quicktime mov skips images)
    How can i solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Greetings Henk

    Ok this is workaround but should in principle do what you want:
    //create an instance of library object
    var mylibrary = fl.getDocumentDOM().library;
    var doc = fl.getDocumentDOM();
    var tl = fl.getDocumentDOM().getTimeline();
    //get items in library in an Array
    itemArray = mylibrary.items;
    totalCount = itemArray.length;
    for(var i=0;i<totalCount;i++){
        myItem = itemArray[i];
        myItemType = myItem.itemType;
        myItemName = myItem.name;
        mylibrary.editItem(myItemName);
        fcNum = tl.layers[0].frameCount;
        for (f=0; f<fcNum;f++){
                tl.setSelectedFrames(f, f)
                framenum = f + 1;
                //select your destination, on MAC use something like file:///Macintosh HD/Users/username/Desktop/
                doc.exportPNG("file:///C|/test/"+myItemName+ "_" + framenum +".png", true, true);
    1: open the fla file you want to convert to a movie and create a backup
    2: Create a new Flash Javascript file and insert the code above, Make sure you have enough hard disk space in your destination folder
    3: Press the play button and Flash will automatically parse through all items frame by frame in your library and save the images as png
    4: Take a break as it might take a long time

  • Imported Image sequence cropped and stretched

    When I import a .tif image sequence that is 720x480 into my motion project, which is also 720x480, the result is images that are both cropped and stretched. This is evident in the "media" tab thumbnail as well as the main movie window if I add the sequence to the timeline.
    If I "open in viewer" or preview from the thumb the resulting preview is the right size, aspect ratio, and no stretching.
    If I export a movie it exports the cropped and stretched images.
    Thoughts? HELP?!?!?

    I wonder if Maya produces outsized alpha channels or something that is fooling Motion?
    When you go to the inspector for the clip, does it show that it is sized at 100%?

  • How can i create a .mov file from image sequence with different durations

    how do u create an image sequence with different durations? image one stays for 10 seconds and image two may stay for 30 and so on. each one has a custom duration. can this be done with an apple script or a text file saved as an mov file?

    Hello Omar,
    The example code Programmatic Printing of TestStand Reports - Modular contains a sequence that will convert an XML file to an HTML file given the XML file's path and the path to the stylesheet.  It may need to be altered to fit with the modifications you have already made to the report generation routines, but I think it should definitely get you off on the right foot.  Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Applescript Quicktime export movie to image sequence

    I am having troubles with Quicktime 7.1 and Tiger using Applescript.
    Ultimately I want to export a movie as image sequence as tiff at a certain fps.
    I've downloaded the Applescript/Quicktime script collection. When I try to run the "Export to DV Stream.scpt" script, it gives me "an unknown error occurred"
    Looking at the event log, the problem with their file is on the line
    "export movie 1 to new_file as DV stream using settings preset "NTSC 44.1 kHz"
    If I truncate the options at the end to say "export movie 1 to new_file as DV stream"
    it works fine, but then I can't select presets.
    I don't want to export as DV, rather as image sequence, I thought I could just modify script to read
    export movie 1 to new_file as image sequence using settings {Format:"TIFF", fps:15}
    It compiles fine, but saves images as .png at 30 fps,
    I've studied the dictionary, but didn't get anywhere.
    Thanks in advance

    Something definitely got hosed in QT 7.1's scriptable interface. A script I had running perfectly in 7 broke on 7.1. I basically just shuffled objects and commands around like you did until I it finally worked. :/ If you have a copy of the last version handy (perhaps on one of your other macs) then I suggest loading and using that for now.
    Edit: Oh yeah, and you can't specify settings the way you have it as a record ({Format:"TIFF", fps:15}) even though that compiles, the dictionary states that the 'using settings' parameter is a file containing settings. You would create such a settings file using another script with the 'save export settings' command (note this only saves the most recently successfully manually-attempted export settings)

  • Exporting animated symbol to image sequence

    Hi guys!
    I'm unable to export an animated symbol to image sequence properly because the symbol does not animate.
    I created the tweens in multiple layers, then cut-pasted all layers to a new symbol. I did this so I could then just do some tween motions on the symbol.
    The tweening is perfect, but when I export the image sequence, the images do not animate the way it does on the Flash player. All I get is an image sequence with the tweened symbol, but the symbol itself does not animate.
    I'd really appreciate if you guys could give me a tip on how to get the symbol to animate when exporting the image sequence.
    Alternatively, is there a way to motion-tween multiple layers simoultaneously? (Layers which are themselves tweened)
    Thank you guys!
    Any additional info, I'll be checking regularly so I can provide as much description as possible to get this to work.

    Ok, I figured it out!
    I changed the symbol type to "Graphic," and I was able to see the animation in the timeline. Easy!
    Now I just exported the movie to png sequence, and bam! Magic!
    If anyone has this problem, don't hesitate to ask me and I'll ellaborate on what I did.
    Thanks!

  • Movie Creation from an Image Sequence

    Hi, my question is about how to use iMovie to create a movie from an image sequence.
    I have much experience doing this in Quicktime Pro. I just import the image sequence and select the time interval for each frame.
    I want to use iMovie 4 nstead of Quicktime Pro to do this because I'd like the frames to span variable time lengths and be synced to audio. I'm sure this is easy, but as someone new to iMovie I have no idea how to do it.
    thanks
    Powerbook G4 15 aluminum   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Another way is to import the sequence directly into iMovie, automatically importing with the duration you want. iMovie lets you set a duration from 1 frame up.
    • iMovie lets you select any number of images to import at the same time, so you can select one image to import or a sequence of images in a folder. (Use the Import command so the numbered sequence arrives in the proper order.)
    (To import all the images in a folder, press Command-A after navigating to that folder. Otherwise use Command-clicking and Shift-clicking to select the images.)
    • Imported images always conform to your current Ken Burns settings. So if KB is set to import as 5 seconds with no zoom, that's how the images arrive.
    But you're not limited to <n> seconds. You can force KB to import as 1 frame, 10 frames or whatever. The trick is to first configure KB to import with that duration.
    Trouble is, the KB duration textbox is buggy so you can't type your desired duration there. But KB can be set another way, by clicking on any previously-imported image. So the trick is to create a clip with the duration you want, then use it as a "template" for importing other images.
    To create a clip with the duration you want, double-click on a previously-imported clip and set its duration to <n> frames. (Type 00:00:01 for one frame.) Before importing the sequence, click on that clip, which sets KB to apply its settings for the next import(s).
    One can create a series of "template" clips, one for each duration commonly used. Before importing each new set of images, click on the clip you want to control the next import.
    Unfortunately, once images are imported there is no way to simultaneously Update all to a new duration using a textbox. It may be easiest to simply re-import the images with a new duration.

  • Problem exporting image sequence

    Hello,
    Somehow the rendering of my fileout node fales.
    I want to export my composition as an image sequence (tiff). When I render the fileout node, the flipbook is working, but the exported images contain only the foreground image of my composition and the background image is missing.
    What do I do wrong?
    I just connected a foreground image sequence to a background image, using the over node. Then I attached the fileout to the over node.
    Maybe it has something to do with the imagename of the fileout?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Wypke

    sorry,

  • What are the best image sequence settings (fps)

    Hi all,
    I have a video that I'm wanting to loop and as it's only six seconds I've made an image sequence out of it and can loop it nicely. The problem is it's a bit jerky so I was wondering what other people use for the frame rate etc.
    I've made the movie in photoshop, it is a 3D model which I've animated on the timeline (360 degree revolve). I can specify any frame rate for the timeline, any for the export and any for the image sequence overlay.
    I imagine that I would match all three but what is going to give me the smoothest result?
    Also I'm exporting as png's, they seem to give lower file size is this the best format?
    Cheers
    G.

    Ok. Thanks for the pointers, I've gone and tried a couple of options.
    I've did manage to crop the file down so it's now 696x953px. I then did a few other tests and found that if I took the Photoshop timline down to one second and adjusted the frame rate this way it was easier to get the final amount of frames (maybe just easier to work it out in my head, I am still fairly new to this).
    I've then adjusted the timing in the image sequence settings to give me the speed and length of loop I'm after.
    My final settings that have given me a good result and very small file size are:
    Photoshop
    48fps (1 second timeline)
    Export as PNG
    InDesign
    Speed 12fps
    This gives me a 4 second loop which is shorter than I orignally planned but looks quite good.

  • FCP "Export - QuickTime Movie" gamma shift

    Above is an example of what happens when I do a direct export in Final Cut Pro, using the Export -> QuickTime Movie function.  As you can see, the image is significantly brighter and the colors are a little more washed out (this image isn't particularly colorful, but trust me, it washes them out).  I always thought the Export -> QuickTime Movie meant the image would not be compressed--that it was a straight export using the sequence settings.
    The image you see above was shot natively in ProRes 422 (HQ) using an Arriflex Alexa.  It has never been transcoded.  The bottom image is what it looks like using Export -> QuickTime Movie.  Totally unacceptable for a piece of professional software, if you ask me.
    I can't express how infuriating this is, to have everything looking perfect in FCP and then exporting only to have it look like garbage.  I've been able to play with gamma correction a bit and have gotten it PRETTY close to the original look, but this seems like a horrible workaround.
    Anyone else know why this is happening?  Is there a fix for this?
    I'm working with FCP 6.0.6 and QuickTime 10.1.

    Sure thing, Meg.
    Here's a source clip with "approximate" gamma correction:
    "Approximate" gamma correction makes the image look flatter within Final Cut Pro than it actually is.
    Now, the very same clip and frame, but with gamma set to "Accurate" :
    Now, things are switched.  The exported image looks flatter than the source clip within FCP.
    Here's another tidbit of info--the frame from my first post was professionally color graded and exported as a self-contained movie--so there were no filters, FCP or otherwise, being applied there.  But the difference is just night-and-day to me.

  • Raw Image Sequence Workflow For Stop Animation

    Hi There,
    I'm making a music video using a bunch of stop animation stills shot using a DSLR. I'm trying to improve the speed of my current workflow so I can use the color correction features of Raw Processing to adjust and re-adjust shots.
    The current workflow:
    - Use Adobe Bridge to Process the Raw files and save out JPEGs
    - Import JPEGs into Motion as an Image sequence
    - Crop and resize the sequence to suit the shot
    - Import the Motion file directly into FCP
    - Render the the Motion file and edit to music
    The main issues I'm having:
    - When the JPEG image sequence is imported into Motion, it looks very desaturated
    - Tweaking the colour using RAW processing requires going back to Bridge and starting again
    Is there any kind of plug-in for Motion or FCP that will allow me to use Raw files and the color correction tools directly in either program?
    Any suggestions or workflow tweaks would be most welcome.
    Cheers

    Hi There,
    Thanks for all the replies. As you can tell I'm not a video guy so I guess it's time to embrace the video side as you say Adam!
    Every shot was processed into JPEGs weeks ago, so time-wise it's not really an option to re-process everything - the deadline is today! A local editor/DOP I've talked to has said that by the time things go from 3072px wide to 1920px to 768px (local PAL TV) we won't notice any JPEG artifacts.
    He agrees that JPEGs are not ideal but has said it will be OK - especially as it's a grungy stop animation rockin ' roll video created by the band. We want the highest quality possible but there is definitely a cut-off point as we're not professionals and the budget is literally $0.00, hence the limited equipment.
    I've done some tests with TIFF files but motion won't display the size correctly for some reason - same with a PSD sequence. I like the PICT suggestion Mark. but I'd have to re-process the raw files in Photoshop as I can't save them directly from Bridge which is quicker.
    Thanks for your reply Patrick, I got the size wrong. The files are between 3072px wide or 3888px wide depending on the camera used.
    As it stands, all the shots have been processed in Motion and imported into FCP - and I can adjust cropping etc very easily back in Motion (thanks Adam). The only issue is that FCP won't render out a final movie (keeps crashing) so I think I'm going to render movies from Motion and re-import into FCP unless there is a better way to do it?
    Thanks for all your help and suggestions, most appreciated.
    Cheers

  • Greenscreen issue - eporting as an image sequence?

    Hi folks!
    I have this greenscreen shot whith VERY bad lighting. So in order to get decent keying, I decided to export my footage as an image sequence after using the primatte keyer for further correction in photoshop. (I have also tried the demo of DV matte blast). What happens is this:
    When I import the the images into photoshop even those areas which were transparent in Motion are black in Photoshop which makes it almost impossible to do any retouching (the subject in questions wears black).
    So what's my mistake and what settings do I have to chose when exporting from Motion?

    Thanx for your quick reply!
    But actually it helped and created another problem:
    I switched on the alpha layer in photoshop so I could see what was transparent in Motion, did some retouching and saved the image...
    When I re-import the image sequence into Motion, then THERE is a lot of black where it was transparent originally... I tried messing with the interpret alpha function in Motion, but that didn't help either...
    I still think I tick the wrong option somewhere either in Motion or in photoshop.
