Exporting Progressive Footage

Hi There.
I have a Sony Z5 and have played with the 25P HDV setting. I like the effect and wish to use it on shoots. When I started to edit the footage, it dawned on me that I had no real true idea of how to import it and then export it.
I bought into PP CS5 as HDV 1080 2p5 but not sure If I should be usuing this one (I am in the UK where PAL is used).
Once I had edited I wanted to export out and not sure which settings I should use. I have tested a few using "Match Source" and them playing around. The source would say 25fps Prog but the output shows as Upper with no room to change.
I may be causing myself more headaches than I should but wonder if it makes much difference and if someone with more experiince that I could offer a workflow?

Final destination of footage will be mixed, sometimes Blu-ray, other times (when less that 25mins) a regular DVD as AVCHD using Encore to build a Blu-ray image and ImgBurn to create the DVD.
Which preset would you suggest for the export? I noticed there are some HDTV ones... would one of these be best and if so which? I think chosing a preset would more than likely mean I would have to tweak something or other and therefor making a custom one. It would be useful to know though if a Preset would work for my needs and that i was getting the best output possible.
Just as a matter for the look of the film. I have heard a lot about the Programme 6 preset on the Sony Z5 and used this along with the 25P setting. I think the footage looks good but doesn't soften much or give the yellowish tint you kinda associate with Film. If anyone has a better experience with the presets within the camera, be good to know.

Progressive footage for DVDSP

I've been doing some experimental encodes from compressor as a result of 'white papers' on a few forums. I imported interlaced footage into compressor and using encoding options exported it as a 'progressive' mpeg2. Opened DVDSP and added a track. Never noticed it before but DVDSP reports the track as interlaced even without placing the footage on it. When I place the 'progressive' footage on the interlaced track DVDSP still reports the track as interlaced in the inspector?
There is no option in DVDSP to change the track from interlaced to progressive.
Whats's going on here?
Is 'interlaced' an unchangeable default format in DVDSP.
Is it therefore a waste of time DE-interlacing footage with compressor before importing it into DVDSP.
Is DVDSP RE-interlacing the footage?

Thanks for the response. Here's the whole story. I bought a Sony HVRV1 shooting Pal 25fps, as it boasted 'Progressive' but it also shoots Interlaced. The short story is that it turns out to be 'progressive segmented frames, laid to tape as interlaced' I had a load of problems finding this out. FCP treats it as interlaced, won't recognise it as progressive.
So I abandoned the 'Progressive segmented frames' and shot Interlaced.
As a result of 'authoritative' articles on a well known forum everyone was advised that we 'must' deinterlace. More red herrings. I took this advice at its word and I'm at this juncture now having wasted over a week encoding interlaced footage to progressive to find out from yourself that the DVD spec is by default, interlaced. I'm grateful for the heads up,thanks.

All computer media players that I use will deinterlace footage for viewing anyway so any encoding is pointless. Picture the process. The footage is interlaced, encoded as progressive by compressor, reinterlaced by DVDSP? I couldn't see how this would improve how it looks, seems it might be why I'm so disappointed in the quality of my DVDs.
I think you've solved my question and I'm one step closer to getting a 'clean' workflow.

Exporting HD footage

As some of you may know from a previous post, I am currently working on my Senior Capstone film project. My classes have all been FCP based, and I was really getting into risky waters by using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for my edit - due to potential compatability issues.
My last post discussed issues with some rippling in my footage, which a friend recommended deinterlacing the footage.
Now, I am trying to export my footage and have strict guidelines for my file format, some of which are not a codec available for the PC (Apple ProRes 422). I have exported an MPEG-2 Blu-ray of my project (so far the only setting that produced a quality product for some reason) and have been trying (and failing) to convert the footage.
Here is my workflow (my required export settings will follow):
My footage was recorded on 3 different Canon HV20's. All of my footage is stored on an external harddrive connected via FireWire 400 (with FireWire 800 adapter).
The project file is HDV 1080i/60i (30fps).
I exported the footage directly onto my external harddrive (not a large enough internal HD) as MPEG-2 Blu-ray leaving the default settings (Maximum Render Quality and Frame Blending I believe were both checked).
The final result looks fine.
I downloaded software called MPEG Streamclip, as recommended for my fellow FCP classmates to use when converting their Apple ProRes files into H.264 .mp4 files. I chose the exact same settings as they were required. The result?: The first 10 seconds or so plays normally. Then, once the first visually chaotic scene (actors running all over the place on screen), the video cannot keep up and it appears to be playing in slow motion until it speeds up and slows back down.
I decided to try the H.264 Codec in PP. My Source Settings reads: 1440x1080 (1.3333), 29.97 fps, Upper, 00;14;41;22, 48000 Hz, Stereo
The Output settings chosen: NTSC, 1920x1080, 29.97 fps, De-interlaced AAC, 160 kbps, 48 kHz, Stereo VBR, 1 Pass, Target 30.00, Max 30.00 Mbps
Now, I understand the 1440x1080 doesn't match up with the 1920x1080 and I wondered if I should have approached this differently. I am required to either use 1280x720 or 1920x1080 for my output. 1440x1080 is NOT an option, even though this was the only setting I could use for my source footage which was captured from HDV tapes. Supposedly the Canon HV20 is 1920x1080 data compressed into 1440x1080, but I know nothing more than this as I wasn't familiar with the cameras before this project.
But for the official screening of our films, I'm required to provide the H.264 .mp4 file which will be placed onto a FCP timeline alongside my classmates' projects.
Any advice or recommendations to test out, please let me know. Here are the requirements for the output file which I've been adhering to but without successful results:
Drag the QuickTime file (.mov) youʼve just created into the center square (it has 5
blue dots) on MPEG Steamclip.
• Go to File > Export to MPEG-4
• Under Compression, H.264 should be automatically selected. Be sure that it is.
• Make sure the Quality bar is at 100%.
• Check Limit Data Rate and type in 30; then make sure you have mbps selected
next to it in the drop down menu, NOT kbps.
• Sound should set automatically.
• Frame Size should remain (unscaled), as you selected this during the creation of
your master file.
• Make sure that Interlaced Scaling is unchecked if your film is ProRes 422 (most of
your films will be). If your file is DV NTSC, leave Interlaced Scaling checked, and
check De-interlace Video as well.
• Click Make MP4 to export.
• Name the file and select where to save it on
your hard drive.
• Click Save.
I have played around with the Interlaced Scaling, trying both checked and unchecked as my original file is not ProRes 422. But the same video lag problem happens each time.

You can edit and produce HD footage just fine on your machine -- I thought you were only having trouble playing back the final result. There will be jerky playback when you're previewing the timeline, and some exports might take longer, but there is nothing preventing you from editing the full result on the hardware you have now. You just have to have realistic expectations on how smoothly the editing and previewing will go. Your hardware is perfectly capable of producing a broadcast-quality H.264 output file. You just can't play it smoothly on that machine, is all.
As for your next machine, Adobe lists minimum and recommended hardware requirements on their website for all their products.

Exporting HD footage from AVID Adrenaline

I have some raw HD footage (1080P) that I want to export from AVID Adrenaline and import into FCP 6.0.2. I'd like to keep the loss of quality to a minimum. Which AVID Codec should I use to export the footage?

What are available that are consistent with the FCP Easy set ups?

Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.

I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)

Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

Export progress bar shows, but no SWF appears

Hello all,
i've been through tech support and about 100 different sites with this issue but nothing seems to help. I'm using windows Vista 64 bit (work machine, not personal) with Adobe CS5 production premium. I have this training I created in flash and it used to export just fine. I was able to test and everything, but lately, it stopped doing that. I hit CTRL+enter, and it won't give me a SWF file. I hit debug it says it can't find the swf. I looked in the folder where everything is for the training, and sure enough, there is no SWF file there. I tried hitting CTRL + enter and watching the folder. The SWF file appears while the export progress bar is going, but the second the bar is done, the file vanishes. For a while, if I went into File and hit Export Movie, it worked, but even that's stopped working. Can anyone help me figure this out?
FYI - I put the file on my Mac and it works fine there. I can export, make changes, debug, anything I like. It's just on my windows work machine.

Exporting HDV footage to web streaming

I'm trying to Export HDV footage to web streaming format but it always ends up stretched to fit the streaming format. any suggestions

i'm with andy. i've been shooting hdv1080i60 for the past few months for web distribution, but a bunch of the sites/video players that i use don't support 16:9, and if i uploaded the video like that, it would get all stretched. my workaround has been to export>QT movie after i'm done editing, and then make a new 4:3 sequence and drop the previously exported quicktime file in it, and then export>using QT conversion at 320x240 with my normal web settings. it makes the video "letterboxed" but it plays undistorted when uploaded to youtube, google video, etc.

Field dominance setting for progressive footage?

I'm still not sure about this subject.
I film with a Canon HF100. This is shooting progressive footage. I use a Imac, therefor the footage will be imported from a achvd to .mov files.
When I import it in FCE it will give automatically a fielddominance of upper odd. I heard I had to change it to fielddominace none. By mistake I edited a project without changing from Upper odd to none and there was nothing wrong with the project.
1. Is this true?
2. And why do I have to change it? What's the (technical) reason (try to understand it) and why doens't this go automatically?

2) ... field-dominance is a matter with interlaced footage ... in the older days, the many lines of a frame were splitted into two fields: even and odd lines. and funny as engineers often like to be, the odd lines (1,3,5,7,9, ... = don't neccessarily have to be the first (=dominant) field (.dv for instance: 'first' field is the even one 2,4,6,...)
progessive has no fields = no field dominance
but ..
some cams read out the chip progressive, but record the p frame as two identically i-fields! ... phewwww
summary:
if it works, don't change it ...

CS4 Adobe Media Encore crashes when exporting HD footage

I've got adobe premiere pro CS4 and everything has been going well when working on Mini DV imported footage - exporting AVI's etc, it's all good. But now I've started shooting on a Sony EX3 so I've been importing that footage as MP4s. While not amazing, the editing has been going well, it just goes horribly wrong when I try to export any footage.
For example, I've got a 3 minute video which I've tried to export as an mp4, AVI, mov or H.264 - Adobe Encore will open up quickly enough and then I'll press "Start" and nothing will happen, it will sit and eventually crash.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Trying to export .MTS footage filmed in 1080i

Hi, I recently bought a sony HDR-XR150 camcorder and am filming in HD FX 1080i and the quality is amazinggg when I hook it up to the TV via HDMI. but when I export the footage from iMovie '11 the image quality isn't nearly as good. I've tried exporting with multiple different settings and I cannot figure out how to keep the quality of the footage once it's exported. Can somebody give me some tips?

I bought recently a SONY HDR-XR550VE camcorder with 1080i resolution. I wanted to work with iMovie in HD.
What was my surprise that when I imported videos in HD from the camcorder (verified that the clips was in HD 1080i playing these clips directly from the camera to the HD TV) the films are imported in iMovie '11 in standard definition!!. It was impossible to import in HD. I tried everything without results. The clips are imported in STD (standard definition).
I investigated a little bit in Google and the answer to import videos in HD to iMovie'11 from the SONY HDR-XR550VE is:
- Install Turbo.264 HD Video Converter from ELGATO (not very expensive).
- Import videos in 1080p to my Mac from the camera.
- Place the import clips in a local folder of my Mac.
- Rename the files and make them sort (f.e.: clip1.mov)
- Open iMovie and choose "Import from file"
- Select the desired files to import
- And.. thats it!.
With these steps I have HD1080p clips to work in iMovie '11

Export progress initialising

I have just upgraded to QT Pro for the purpose of exporting .avi video to my iPod. Whenever I start the export, it opens a a progress box and then appears to do nothing else. The progress bar remains blank and the text underneath says 'initialising'. I've left it running for several hours, and tried various file sizes, but nothing seems to work. Can someone please give me a clue what to do next, or advise on what the problem might be....

Can't Render Video Hangs on the Initializing Video Export Progress bar

When rendering a video I never get past the Initializing Video Export Progress bar.
Running windows 8 64bit, Photoshop CC.
I have Windows CS4, Lightroom 4, LIghtroom 5 and Premier Elements installed. I have no problem exporting video from lightroom or Premier Elements

I am trying to process a move clip of various types. I don’t even get to the dialogue that presents the parameter entry. I’ve tried .mp4,mts,3gp,f4v & m2t. I don't even have any changes applied to the clip.

Any Way To Export DV Footage At 768x576?

So you can edit DV footage in iMovie '08 imported from a MiniDV camcorder. But is there a way to export that footage at it's original resolution of 768x576 pixels?
If I go to Export using QuickTime... and then choose Movie to Apple TV, it drops the resolution down to 640x480, even though the Apple TV supports up to 1280x720! Why's that?
On the plus side, it automatically deinterlaces the footage, which iMovie HD didn't used to do.

If you re-render frames from a 4:3 PAL clip to square pixels by keeping the number of vertical pixels fixed, you end up with 768x576.

Actually you should end up with 788x576 (although 768x576 is almost always incorrectly mentioned in this context).

What does DVDSP do with progressive footage.

Just curious if anyone actually knows. We already know that DVDSP does not do progressvie DVDs and we are expected to feed it interlaced footage so knowing that a lot of work comes to us in various codecs with a load of it all progressive in one flavour or another what is happening in DVDSP to this progressive footage before DVDSP writes the DVD. Does it actually introduce interlacing in some way ? If so how does this affect the quality of the post interlaced progressive footage.

Hi Peter - are you using DVDSP to encode video? The encode settings in DVDSP preferences are rudimentary to say the least and do not give you access to all of the controls that you need to get the job done well. The encoding is there to cope with menus more than video, and although DVDSP will encode anything not already converted to MPEG2 you really shouldn't use it if you want to control anything in the process. It's the old adage "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"...
The video really needs encoding using Compressor (or any other suitable encoder) to get your video and audio files to import into DVDSP. If you do this you shouldn't get any interlacing (provided you didn't add it as part of the encode in Compressor).
DVDSP won't re-encode your MPEG2 file... thus you should get progressive output from DVDSP if that's what you gave it.
