Exporting to .idml from CS6

I need to give indesign files to a colleague that only has CS4, but when i send them .idml files, they can open them fine but all the pictures are missing. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a fix. Apologies if this has already been discussed, i'm new to the forum.
Thanks
Jonny

The images are linked, so if they need to output the file you'll need to send them the images, too. As for the previews being missing, that's normal with .idml and missing links. The export strips out the previews, which is one of the main reasons the file size gets reduced, and ID cannot rebuild them when the .idml is opened if the links are missing.
One way to deal with this would be to Package the file, export the .idml, and send that along with the package.

  • Can't view some images or export them to PDF from CS6 InDesign

I recently reimaged my Win7 PC hard drive and I was told by Adobe that I needed to reinstall CS6.
I was editing a document I've been working on for months and when I went to export it to PDF, like I've done many times in the past (pre-reimaged hard drive), I got an error message during the PDF export. Now when I view the document in ID, many of the graphics on other pages display as grey boxes and I can't export to PDF(or print to PDF) anything but grey boxes or no images for many of the images/graphics. Or, I may get a PDF without the graphics, but a dark area for the drop shadow only in place of the graphic. When I try to relink the graphics I get an error message that says "You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the file owner or an administrator to obtain permission." I am the file owner and admin. These files gave me no problems before this reinstall.
I also found that if I try to open an offending AI or EPS files in AI CS6, I get a similar message that says, "Can't open the illustration. The file may be read only, or the files is in use by another application, or you do not have the required permissions. Please save the document with a different name, or in a different folder or directory. -54"
I uninstalled and reinstalled CS6 again (as administrator), and did the appropriate updates. Same results.
I also opened another client's file and had a similar issue when I exported to PDF.
I tried to save the first file to IDML so I could open it in CS5, which (CS5) has been working perfectly since the reinstall. When I created the IDML from CS6, it did some really strange things when opening it in CS5, including while opening the IDML file, it would "call" an ID CS6-based file, which of course, CS5 didn't like at all. It then goes into an endless loop which requires Windows Task Manager to get out of the program.
Any ideas as to what's going on here? Do I need to change some settings in ID? Acrobat?
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

  • CS5 cannot open .idml file exported from CS6

I've seen this question before from people having problems with other versions of InDesign. I, too, am having an issue with plug-ins that do not allow me to open an idml file. I downloaded the script that verifies the version used to create the idml to be sure it really was made from CS6, not CS5.5. It's not an empty file as it is 3.3mb Interestingly, when the customer packaged the file it came up with no links. It's a 32-page document with lots of photos, graphics, etc. How it is possible that it would not have any links? Any suggestions short of having to upgrade to CS6 would be helpful. Thank you.

    Hi Peter,
I'm guessing it might have been a network corruption problem. She brought in her laptop, we made another .idml file and loaded it to a USB stick, then transferred it to my computer. The file opened just fine. And yes, she had pasted all her images, so we have her collecting the bits and pieces for me to review and relink everything. I believe I have the patch, but will double-check. Thanks!

  • I can't open idml file exported from CS6 in Indesign 4 or 6.

I created an InDesign document in CS6 and saved it as an idml file to be able open it on another machine with CS4. Unfortunately I did not save a copy in indd copy in 6. I get a message "Adobe may not support this format, a plug in might be missing." any ideas welcome, otherwise I start over Thanks.

No luck? Did you get any message?
"Adobe may not support this format, a plug in might be missing." is normally opening if you try to open an INDD in a previous version. That's why I supposed that it might be an INDD file with the wrong extension.
If the file is not corrupted you should be able to open any IDML in CS6 but also in CS4.
If you have saved it with the wrong extension, you could try to replace the wrong extension with a correct one.
You write also HDML? Are you sure that it is also not a HTML file?

  • InDesign CS6 crashes when exporting to IDML (OSX 10.8)

I have a MacBook Pro Retina with OS X 10.8 and InDesign CS6.
As soon as I try to save as InDesign CS4 or export to IDML InDesign crashes.
    What to do?

    Jerobers wrote:
Okay, that may be it. I also opened your idml file and it gave me a prompt: "This command would create a large number of page items and would severely degrade performance. Data will be placed as embedded EPS."
That's a typical message when trying to paste complex vector paths. And yes, that can wreak havok if you have too many pasted vctors or comlex native ones (I had a file a year or so a go that had about 60 pages of pasted illustrations from another user -- took two hours to open and two hours to export).
If you are pasting from Illustrator, don't. Place the illustrations.

  • Idml from cc cannot be opened or rather is broken in cs6

    Hi there,
i saved an idml from an indesign cc document and tried to open it in indesign cs6. First cs6 crashes down, than after trying again, it opens indeed, but the textboxes are broken..they are displaced and to small for their content. (don't know, if there was any other problem..just saw that one for the moment)
Please help me! I'm really desperate, becaus i need this document for my client..:(
    Thanks a lot!
    Hanna_999

I'm notr sure I understand the question, or maybe you didn't understand me. I'm sugesting you not use the existing files, which seem to be damaged. You can probably recover the text from those files using InDesign Tagged Text, story by story, but that's all you will be using from what you have now. You need to make new files the same size, import the tagged text, then re-import any placed art.
The easy method for cleaning a damaged file is to export to .idml, but you've already found that isn't working.

  • Export book / document from InDesign CC to CS6

Is there any way to export an entire book (indb) file and import it in version CS6?
The only way we found is to export each document as IDML, which should in theory allow us to open it in CC. But that doesn't help us for the book. Maybe there's a plugin or something?
Also, exporting as IDML doesn't work for the document we need it for, it gets stuck at 65 %. I tried opening an older version (that opens in CS6) and exporting it from CS6, but that doesn't work either.
So is there another way to move the file to CS6 while keeping the format and layout intact?

There is no interchange format for .indb files, nor would it help since the .indb would continue to point to the original .indd component files. You must export each .indd to .idml, then open those in the earlier version and save as new .indd files and add to a new .indb Book file. You can use Peter Kahrel's batch conversion tool to make the .idml files: Free script Batch convert/export InDesign documents | Peter Kahrel

  • I am new to EPUB fomat and I am facing a lot of difficulties in exporting my work from InDesign CS6

Hi..I am new to EPUB fomat and I am facing a lot of difficulties in exporting my work from InDesign CS6. The problem is that I have got a financial report of about 100pages to export as EPUB, with lots of graphs etc..and when I export it, to EPUB 2.0, the following happens:
    1. The image quality is quite low (even if the original images are of high quality, and during export, i put the image to max quality)
    2. The graphs do not appear where they should be! All the imags in fact appear after the long paragraphs of text..meaning everything appear quite messy and in an unordered manner.
I have read that images should be anchored, and doing so, the result is quite better, but still, some images appear at the end of the text!!d
That is, the end result, in terms of pagination and graphics, is no way like it should have been, compared to the indesign file (page 5 is displayed after page 10, image on page 4 appears on page 9 etc..)
    PLEASE HELP..
    P.S :
I am using Adobe digital edition to view my EPUB..I have also tried CALIBRE and SIGIL!! But I am not too sharp in eiting CSS codes etc...

    Hi Akshay,
If you want your images to appear standalone with no other page item on the page, then you can insert Page break on an image.
This is how you can specify a page break:
    1. Select the image
    2. Goto Object->Object Export Options
    3. Select EPUB and HTML tab
    4. Select Custom Layout check box and then check Insert Page break. You can select from the option in the dropdown-Before Image, After Image, Before and After Image as per your requirement.
    Regarding your question about images:
You export your graphs as JPEG but are those JPEGs of good resolution? If they are, then InDesign is doing something wrong during export but if the JPEGs are not of good quality then it is not an export issue. Please provide some more details here.
    Regards,
    Pooja

  • How to save down from InDesign Creative Cloud version to CS5? Have exported as .idml file but still get messages that plug-ins are missing although CS5 confirms it is fully updated.

How to save down from InDesign Creative Cloud version to CS5? Have exported as .idml file but still get messages that plug-ins are missing although CS5 confirms it is fully updated.

Yes. Thanks. I misled myself based on another post. Successfully did this by selecting "File," "Save a copy ..." then choosing "for CS4 or later (IDML)"
It required some patience and several tries, but I think that was due to hardware (memory) being overloaded by CC Cloud version or something. It was a 50 MB, 500-page file and took 17 minutes to convert/save,
Re-capping: from CCloud to CS5, don't use "Export" (to IDML); use "Save as" or "Save a copy" and select "for CS4 or later (IDML)".
    Advice much appreciated.

  • Can you export an Image Trace from CS6 to ArcMap 10.0 and then convert it to a shapefile?

I am new to AI CS6 and I hope that Image Traces can be exported as files that are usable in ArcMap 10.0. I ultimately need a shapefile in ArcMap.

You export a DWG from AI and import it into ArcGIS. Read the ArcGIS help and forums for instructions and tips on how to avoid problems.

  • Not able to export quicktime movie from Flash CS5 or CS6.

Hi! I am not able to export quicktime movie from Flash CS5 or CS6. When I export it the progress bar is showing and says Recording Flash content and nothing happens

I havent exported any videos in the past from Flash. The movie is around 45 seconds and the size is 470KB.
I tried both, the memory and the hard drive.
In the attached image you can see the settings and in the other image you can see the progress bar that remains without something to happen.
I dont mind what type of video to export it can be also .avi but again I have troubles there. It is very large and the animation is distorted.
The animation consist from two scenes. The first one can be exported without any problem but the second one cannot be exported. May be because it has some masks layers and guide layers?

Thanks for trying to help. Some how I managed to do it-but I did it some kind of meatball way. I kept clicking into the image until everything was selected...then I grouped it all and exported as fxg because I do not have the eps option. Somehow it worked, But I have 20 of these to do and this is def not the right way to do it. Hope someone else can wise me up. Thank-you for your help.
You did not have to group it you could have exported the image or the selection only or the movie in the FXG format (Flash Exchange Graphic) and what is wrong with doing it a newer and better way. FXG is supported in Flash Catalyst as is Illustrator and Photoshop FXG can be exported from Illustrator so you use the file in Flash more readily and though Photoshop does not support FXG that might change.
I am leased they finally came up with a rational method of exporting to and from Illustrator and Flash.
Eps was never the right way since Flash is not a postscript application.
You found the right way and format you just went about it in an unusual and unneccessary way.
Next time if you want all the art choose image instead of selection if you only need some elements of the art select them export choosing selection only that art will be exported no need to group.
if you want the whole movie then again choose the whole movie of course that will be a motion type format not FXG.
Anyway you sort of did it the right way.
