Exposing internal wiring risking electric shock

I am outraged by the authorized service in my town.
I am owner of a Mac Book Pro (s / n: W8926Z3F66D), which had a problem with the original power supply and bought another new major, which before the warranty also had problems with the cable near the connector stripped, exposing internal wiring risking electric shock.
Observing that this is a problem that motivated a technical note (TS1713da apple including the launch of the this MagSafe 2, because of the previous problems as forums on the internet, looked for a support.
Occurs to me that direct the authorized DIGITAL UNIVERSE located in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, the attendant informed me that I had bought the charger in a store that was not authorized, when in fact the store DTECH Technology is an authorized reseller as stated on the website Apple. It should be noted that it was an original Apple product.
I found this absurd against the dealer, where the minimum was unethical in order to damage the image of Dtech Technology. I am a returning customer and have only compliments to this service resale.
With this response, I tried other technical assistance, call Tecnoagil, which were super courteous and helpful where there left to review and change the power supply, because of the risk of shocks and state of the cable.
Therefore, I thank providence right now a quick, because I work in the Home Office regime, and that this damaging me.

    The cause for electric shocks from the body/exposed metal like notebooks and other appliances can often be traced back to faulty wiring (lack of proper earth/ground) in the electric mains.
    It seems you have already ruled that out by plugging out from the mains, and then checked if the electric shocks persist.
    Try this again, If shocks persist, get to Lenovo service, otherwise a call to your electrician is in offing.

  • Electric Shock while charging IPad

    hello
    anybody having the same problem as me when i charge my Ipad from the wall socket and touch the back of the ipad i get an electric shock like when you get a shock from a nine volt battery is this normal or should i go to the apple shop near me

    Any class II (double insulated) device has a maximum allowed leakage current of 250uA and any class I (earthed) device has a maximum permitted leakage current of 3500uA. I measud my iPad charger and found about 30uA leakage.
    The general level of perception to electric current is about 500uA, but some can perceive lower currents. When a class II device is first touched there can be a larger current flowing for a short period (due to capacitive charge effects) but again these are limited to safe levels by the device safety standards (normally IEC 60950 series).
    No certified device on the open market will exceed these safe levels and normally will be well under the limits ( e.g a typical class II device will be about 120uA and a class I device about 1000uA).
    In countries with poor electrical supplies there is a bigger chance of of a fault with the wiring or installation causing a hazard than the class II charger of any Apple product.

  • Overheating and slight static electric shocks

    I first want to say that I am in no way technical!!
    I bought a Macbook Pro 15" late last year, so it is about 6 months old at this stage. I am concerned with 2 things. Firstly the heat that the machine is generating - I am not a gamer nor do I use many applications at the same time - usually all I have open are Finder, Firefox (maybe 3 tabs) and Skype. I did the iStat Nano app and the CPU is running at between 58 and 62 C. The heat is located on the top right side of the macbook (say from the bottom of the keyboard say the letter 'V' up and to the left edge of the machine). The rest of the device is about 10C cooler.
    Is this normal? Can it be reduced? I can't even hear the fans but the iStat says that they are going at just under 2000 rpm.
    The second issue is that on the edges of the computer I am getting mild (static) electric shocks. Is this normal(??)? I am not really generating much static myself so I assume it is coming from the device.
    I would appreciate your views.

    Hi adam, and a warm welcome to the forums.
    A temperature of 58 to 62º for the CPU is really not all that high for an MBP (or any notebook running on a Core2Duo chip. It is the sort of temperature that usually occurs with moderate CPU use.The maximum operating temperature for these processors is around 100ºC. The fans usually start to kick up a little in speed when the temps reach around 70ºC, but won't reach full speed until it is significantly hotter than this.
    Many people think that web browsers like Firefox or Safari are "low CPU" usage applications, but , depending on what sort of sites you are visiting, they can actually impose a substantial load. If you visit any sites that use Flash, for example, you will find that CPU usage by Firefox or Safari skyrocket.
    Open up "Activity Monitor" (in your utilities folder) and keep an eye on Firefox's CPU usage while you visit various websites.
    Head to http://www.cnn.com/video/ in Firefox and play the "lead" video , for example, and you will usually see CPU usage in Firefox increase to somewhere in the 60 to 80% range. Many, many sites use Flash for one purpose or another these days.
    (Skype usually doesn't use much CPU, unless you fire up its video mode, in which case it too can become a heavy load)
    So I wouldn't be worried about the temperatures you mention.
    The "mild shock" matter that you mention is a longstanding issue with notebook computers of many brands. I first experienced it myself when using a PB12 in a remote part of Queensland a few years ago. The power supply of the unit that I was staying in was not properly earthed (and may have even had the "neutral" and "active" wiring reversed). I received noticeable shocks from the body of the computer.
    Many people have also reported this issue when using the two pin "duckhead adaptor" in their MBPs, instead of the earthed three pin cord. It is also a common occurrence when using unearthed "two pin" power adaptors in a variety of PC notebooks.
    It also happens with Dells - see http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39029450,49295100,00.htm and, it would seem, reading the comments HERE to HPs , Compaqs, Sonys, Thinkpads etc etc. Seems , in fact to be a common feature of Notebook computers when using 2 pin power adaptors, though the amount of metal that is directly contactable may affect the extent which people noticing it! http://forums.reghardware.co.uk/forum/1/2008/01/18/dellm1530_electicshock/ provides more examples from a wide variety of makers.

    As long as the place where you are using your computer has a proper earth you should be able to overcome the problem altogether by using the power cord with the three pin , earthed, plug, rather than the two pin plug that lets you connect the power block itself directly into a powerpoint.
    In summary, I wouldn't be unduly worried about either of your issues, though the "shock" issue can be unpleasant and annoying. I avoid it myself by always using the power cord with the earthed three pin plug, which resolves it completely as long as the wiring in your building is properly hooked up!

  • Electric shocks from Macbook

    I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, and what you did about it. My macbook when charging gives small electric shocks through the body of the mac. I'v been on the phone to Apple and they have suggested using a 3 pronged plug, which i do. using a serge protector, which i shouldn't have to use. They told me the magsafe adapter is not earthed if not using the extension lead, which seems mad to me. Please post comments if you have experienced similar problems and what you did to sort it out.

    Without the low current leakage, Apple's products could not be sold. The design compromise is an INTERNATIONAL concern, not just Apple's.

    That's because a plastic case does not conduct electricity.

    "Rights"? I'm not following your thoughts. Too, you are not following mine. Expensive or cheap, the same design considerations are necessary.
    Even in today's economic climate, Apple, all of its competitors, and all of their strategic manufacturing partners are looking for brilliant engineering talent. If you can solve this design compromise with an intelligent, economically-viable solution (they're looking for something better than "make everything plastic"), there's a job waiting for you.

  • Yet Macbook Electrical Shock

    Hello All,
    I know.. Is a well knew problem.. But let me explain..
    I bought a Refurbished Macbook Pro 15" (not Unibody) last week, yesterday is arrived (WOOOW)!
    First thing that I do, is to connect Macbook to power plug (I have a brand new house with a new electric plugs and new wires etc etc) and when I touch the case I feel a little vibrating shock, continuosly, without stop ! But excited from my "new" mac I continued to use it, when my forearm touched it I receive a big electrical shock!
    What I should do?
    Send it back to apple or try to repair or somewhat else??
    I'd like to receive your recommendations !

    I have had the same problem,. I have found that using the plug with the grounded end (the 3 pronged plug) usually solves the problem (this is the only plug I know of sold by Apple that is grounded). I have worked for an electrical contractor for 12 years and used what I know to trouble shoot the problem and it usually is a loose connection on the neutral wiring somewhere in the house (a common problem in new homes). Because the neutral and the ground are tied together at the meter and because the casing of the MacBook is bonded, when there is a poor quality neutral in the electrical system, your body becomes the path of least resistance for the electric.
    Solution - use the three pronged grounded plug and have an electrician check the neutral for a loose connection.

    My sister is using a Macbook that she got in June. Her room is pretty dry. Unfortunately, whenever she's using her computer and there's an electric shock, it freezes her computer. One time I figured it was a fluke. But she told me this has happened numerous times. Any suggestions on this?

    The idea of the grounding line thingy is interesting, although I am of the opinion that it shouldn't be necessary.     Not really because static electricity is known to fry motherboards, even on desktops. Any type of static shock to the system is really bad for it.

  • Mild electric shocks touching cover of Satellite L855-12N

    I bought a Satellite L855-12n (ice blue) two days ago. it kept stinging my skin like mild electric shocks when I touched the bottom left and right corners of the touchpad. It happened only when it is plugged in and I'm barefoot that led me to the conclusion that is an earthing problem.
    I complained to the store but they didnt have a clue and nor did the Toshiba technical support..I tried it in different places and happened also to some friends of mine that checked it, so it's not a problem of my house's sockets.
    The store at last e replaced it with another one but *the same thing happened*!!!!
    even the model they have for display in the store did the same thing (i actually had to take my shoes off among all the customers to prove my point)
    I'm very dissapointed and even thinking about a lawsuit if necessary for a refund . I asked a 3-pin adaptor from toshiba but they said I need to send it to their technical support offices and when that is done I'cant take a refund or exchange it with a new model so I'm taking a big risk here if it turns out that the changing of the adapter doesnt solve the problem.

  • Little electrical shock/vibration from the bottom of keyboard

    hi.
    I just bought MacBook Pro around 3 months ago. Since the first time I bought it, if I plug to electricity, i always get little electrical shock/vibration on my hand. The electrical shock comes from the bottom of the keyboard (along the edge of keyboard, below the trackpad). It often hurt my hand; thus, I usually use some fabric to cover it if i use electricity power.
    Is it normal or not? I previously used iBook and no kind of this problem occured.
    Need your advise.

    It's not "normal" to feel a small electrical tingle from the laptop's metal case, but it's not that unusual, either. You don't say where you are. I had this much of the time I lived in London, mostly due to poor electrical systems. I have sometimes connected an alligator clip lead from the case to my metal desk or even to my wrist watch band to make sure the potential difference between me and the case was zero.
    A good ground is supposed to be provided by one of the two prongs on the plug, but in some homes/offices the wiring just doesn't do a good job. It helps to use the three-prong plug to provide a separate (and routinely redundant) ground. But this also depends on the quality of the house wiring, and may not fix the problem. If using a 3-prong plug doesn't solve your problem, then you may want to have the wiring checked. (You can buy a little thing from Radio Shack that has lights on it that help diagnose wiring problems.) There could be problems for other sensitive electronics you have.
    The tingling is uncomfortable, but it's not dangerous.
    I have had to re-wire some rooms in our house. Nonetheless, if I plug into one outlet and connect to a TV or modem connected to another outlet (one on a separate circuit) I sometimes get the tingling effect.

    i have recently received a toshiba portege m200 tablet however i have realised that when the ac adaptor is connected a small electric shock is given to anyone touching the metal case, i have heard from someone that it could be my ac adaptor which is causing the issue however i wonder if anyone on this site has any idea of the problem. thanks

    Likewise, I bought my Toshiba M200 laptop off of ebay as Factory Refurbished, so is without official warranty. The extended warranty provider only covered the United States and not Australia, where I live, leaving me only with the 90 day warranty of the ebay seller.
    The shocks were immediate. Holding the case, my forearms would get a nasty little tingle seemingly at random. The current has been demonstrated to be going through me the entire time I use it, as by my girlfriend who sits besides me and complains of how touching my skin the sensation can be felt - a numbing tingle, where a finger dragged along the skin 'bounces' rather than slides (sliding gently when the laptop is unplugged).
    The problem is only present when the AC adaptor is plugged in.
    Support has been entirely useless thus far - I tried calling Toshiba in Australia, but they claimed to have never heard of the problem. I called them a few days later, and they STILL claimed to have never heard of the problem despite my having only recently told them all about it! They tried to make me pay over a hundred dollars for a new adaptor - despite the fact that the only part that would actually be 'new' would be the three pin powerpoint plug, which I already have several of!
    I went to an Authorized Repair Centre near here in Adelaide (Commander, I think they're called) who told me they'd charge enough to effectively kill any savings I'd made on buying the laptop factory refurbished, and would have no guarantee of finding the problem. I got on to a nice tech guy there who said if it only took a few minutes he wouldn't charge. I brought the laptop in and he checked the adaptor against another adaptor and tried to detect the electrical shock, only to have difficulty finding if the issue I was on about was real.
    He figured if it was there, it'd have to be the adaptor. My ebay seller then sent me a second power adapter for free, which was kind of him. Unfortunately that didn't resolve it. I've tried using the laptop in other homes as well, in case it was the electrical wiring at my place. That didn't fix it either.
    *sigh*
    I can't afford hundreds of dollars spent testing a Toshiba model when I could have just bought it brand new and with a guarantee for all that cost. The ebay seller has never had this problem before and has been helpful - and it is now past the 90 day warranty period, so I can hardly send it back (all up I'd have lost at least $150 AUS on shipping then, as well!)

    I am using the supplied/genuine charger. The MBP is less than a week old and never dropped or abused.
    When I run my fingers over any part of the body I can feel tingling electric shocks. Surely this isn't acceptable or safe?

    The thing I find suspicious is that if it is a known problem, and there has been an official assessment that it poses no danger to the consumer, then I believe the documentation stating such would have to be made available upon request.  When a car maker issues an internal dealer alert about an maintenance issue that is not dangerous and which does not justify a recall, they are still required under consumer laws to make that information available to owners in writing if requested.  The same thing holds for most consumer products - you are not expected to merely take the word of an employee that it has been determined to be "acceptable and not dangerous" - the company is required to provide the documentation that supports that claim for a supposedly known issue.
    I've owned several Apple laptops since the introduction of the first all metal cased Titanium powerbooks up to my current MBP (the first unibody model), and NONE have ever done what you describe.  Regardless of what plug  connector I have used on the charger, or where I have plugged them in (at home, at work, hotels, airports, other peoples homes).
    If it is a known and documented problem, I would go back to the manager of that store and demand to see the internal documentation saying you "just have to live with it".  That sort of response just does not seem legitimate to me.

  • Static electric shock when hooked up to TV via VGA

    I have a 2007 MacBook Pro and have been hooking it up to a new Samsung HDTV via the display output to VGA, as well as the audio out port. I have been streaming video off of Hulu or Netflix and after about 20 minutes of me sitting on the couch away from the computer and TV, I get up to cue the next TV show or change something with the computer and I get an electric shock when I touch the computer.
    Any thoughts on what may be causing this? Its not the biggest deal but I don't look forward to it every time that is for sure.

    Not sure if either one of us would call that a solution, but if it is static, the problem should get less and less as winter wanes and humidity rises (depending on what climate you're in, of course). I can't recall seeing any in the recent past, but there used to be products available claiming to lower static in households. I've never looked into them. I do try to be careful and touch something else grounded before touching my MBP as electronics and stray electrical charges are not a particularly good combination.

    This is a user forum and is not Apple.  I would definitely recommend that you stop using your iPhone and take it to be checked.

  • Electric shocks in iPhone 4 and Macbook Pro

    When I first started using my white 32GB iphone 4 a month ago, I felt very slight electric shocks and static-like feeling and a kind of pins and needles feeling in my hands. I soon either forgot about it or got used to it.
    Then 2 weeks ago, I got a new 15" 2011 macbook pro (from Smart Deals on Amazon). When I was using the trackpad, I felt even more electric shocks and pins and needles in my hands and my hair has even started standing on end. When I used the laptop on my lap, it got boiling hot and the pins and needles, electric shocks and static in my body got even worse. Now, when I use my old macbook on my lap I'm even getting the same problem.
    I have a carpeted 2nd floor flat and lots of electric devices. As far as I know all of my plug sockets are earthed.
    I'm now not sure if the problem is psychological. My cousin held the phone outdoors and agreed that it was giving him shocks.
    Could I have developed a static sensitivity since using the phone and the macbook pro?
    Maybe I need an electrician to come to the flat or see a doctor.
    But seriously, is there likely to be a fault with the macbook pro as this is by far the worst of the causes of the shocks and probably what started all of this? I need to get to the bottom of this quickly so I can decide whether to take back my macbook pro and/or iphone.

    Someone suggested carpal tunnel syndrome to me as well. But I was able to see an orthopedic surgeon a few weeks ago who ruled that out. I'll see my regular doctor in a week for a yearly checkup. It may be worth getting yourself checked out.
    When you went to the Apple store, were you able to test other phones to see whether they would give you shocks? That is one of my next steps. I've entertained the idea that it is mainly me--acute sensitivity to electricity but a recenlty acquired sensitivity. It did not begin until I started using the iphone in June. Before that electronic devices did not give me shocks, and I did not feel pinpricks or burning. My habits have not changed. Someone joked that regular yoga may be making my less blocked nerves more sensitive. That I take with a big grain of salt.
    I'll call the nearest store to see if they will let me test other phones out.

    Although it is a minor shocks, but it happens frequently.
    I go crazy about that.
    My parents touch me while I am using it,
    they can feel that there is current flow into my body.

    I've found this is most common a problem if you don't use the grounding outlet that came with your power cord. That means you need to use a three prong connector to the wall, instead of a two.
    The next most common issue is if you walk across a carpet or wet floor, you will pick up static electricity. It is a good idea to discharge your static electricity before touching the computer by touching a desk or other object connected to the floor.
    One time I walked across a wet carpet because of a flood, touched a computer keyboard, and fried the computer with my static electricity.
