Extended a class, getting a class cast error

Hi all,
I'm writing a program that uses a closed-source jar in its library (with permission, of course).
One of the classes in that jar wasn't working as I wanted it to, so I extended the class and overwrote one of its methods. So, when using the class, instead of callingThirdPartyClass obj = new ThirdPartyClass();I could useMyThirdPartyClass obj = new MyThirdPartyClass();This seems to work, until a certain line of their code throws a class cast exception:
java.lang.ClassCastException: org.thirdparty.ThirdPartyClass$2
     at org.thirdparty.Event.findTop(Event.java:279)
     at org.thirdparty.ThreadUtils$4.run(ThreadUtils.java:86
     at java.awt.event.InvocationEvent.dispatch(InvocationEvent.java:209)
     at java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEvent(EventQueue.java:461)
    ....Why does this occur? Surely, since MyThirdPartyClass is a child of ThirdPartyClass, anything that expects a ThirdPartyClass shouldn't have any problem, right? Or do I have that backwards? And if so, is there anything I can do to fix the problem?
Thanks!
Sam

Specifically, the ThirdPartyClass itself was an extension of a JApplet. Since I wanted to use it directly in my code, I couldn't set the applet's parameters, so I overwrote the getParameters(String) method to return strings of my choosing.Your approach makes little sense to me. Applets follow a well-defined lifecycle. If you wanted to embed the applet into your own application, all you have to do is use the applet following its lifecycle (that is, instantiate it, set the context, invoke init and start and stop and destroy). Overriding anything should not be necessary.That's exactly what I want to do. However, the applet requires one parameter to be set (DefaultModel = some url) -- if this isn't set I can't run the applet. As far as I can tell (and I have an as-yet unanswered question in the Applets forum asking about this), there is no way to set the parameters in an Applet in any way besides putting in in the 'param' tag in the Applet code in the HTML.
If I'm wrong about that, please let me know.
On the assumption that I was right, I decided to extend the getParameters(String) method, so that it would return the desired String when asked. Naturally, to do this, I had to extend the entire class.
This solved the problem of the program failing when it asked for the parameter, but then it failed when it checked the codebase. I overrode the getCodeBase() method, and the applet no longer had a problem there.
Then I got the exceptions I got above.
I'm fairly certain (but, naturally, not 100% certain of anything) that neither of my methods should have affected the inner-workings of LiteApplet -- I was overriding methods that were from Applet (and not overridden in LiteApplet, I checked) that are just supposed to pass back strings -- the same Strings that would be passed back if it were embedded in a web page -- and not affect the applet in any way.
Naturally, I'm wrong about one or more of my assumptions above, but I just can't work out how overriding those two methods could have created the error that I'm getting.
Sam
PS: Here is the entire exception, if you think it could help. I was scrubbing it merely so as not to confuse matters and make my posts overly long. The last exception below gets repeated indefinitely.

  • Having problems linking two java classes getting a "deprecated API" error??

    Hi,
    I am tryin to link one page to another in my program, however i get the followin msg:-
    Project\alphaSound.java uses or overrides a deprecated API.
    Note: Recompile with -deprecation for details.
    Process completed.
    this only happens when i add the bold piece of code to the class; even though the italic piece of code does take you to a new page?:-
    public class alphaSound extends JPanel implements ActionListener
    {static JFrame f = new JFrame("AlphaSound");
    public alphaSound() {
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent event) {
                 Object source = event.getSource();
    else if(source == vowel)
    { Vowelm vm = new Vowelm();
    vm.setSize(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize());
    vm.show();
    f.dispose();
    else if(source == back)
    { MainPage main = new MainPage();
    main.setSize(400,300);
    main.show();
    f.dispose();}

                public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e) {System.exit(0);}
            //JFrame f = new JFrame("AlphaSound");
            f.addWindowListener(l);
            f.getContentPane().add(new alphaSound());
            f.setSize(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize());
            f.show();
    }here is the class its tryin to call
    public class Vowelm extends JPanel implements ActionListener
    {static JFrame v = new JFrame("VowelSound");
       public Vowelm() {
                                                   ..etc...
    public static void main(String s[]) {
            WindowListener l = new WindowAdapter() {

            //JFrame f = new JFrame("VowelSound");
            v.addWindowListener(l);
            v.getContentPane().add(new VowelmSound());
            v.setSize(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize());
            v.show();
    }Im pretty sure ther is some conflict between the two classes due to the way they are called and designed?
    Hope you can help!
    Kind Regards
    Raj

    You may want to check your show() calls and see if
    they can be replaced with setVisible(). Forexample,
    in your Vowelm code, you have a static JFrame v.
    At
    the end of your main function, you use v.show().As
    of JDK1.1, this has been deprecated in favour of
    setVisible(boolean).hey show() in JFrame is from Window and in windowits
    not deprecated ..
    show is not decrecated thats for sure ... i dontknow
    y you said that ...
    you can look in docs as well..
    True - but this in turn overrides show() from
    java.awt.Component, which has been deprecated. My
    guess is that's where the problem comes from.
    Thanks for the Dukes!
    FlicAnd then again - perhaps not. After looking into this a bit more, I take back my last comment about the Component override. However, as I said in my original reply, compiling with -deprecation should tell you which show() call is flagging the error. There is definitely one somewhere that the JVM doesn't like - without seeing your complete code, it's hard to say exactly where. Based on what you've posted, my guess is that it is within the Vowelm class.
    Next time, I'll try to avoid 'shooting from the hip'.
    Again, thanks for the Dukes,
    Flic

  • Class with interface, extends Sprite, but get compile error accessing "visible"

    Here is the situation:
    - Class MyLoader extends Sprite implements ILoader
    The class extends Sprite and works perfectly.
    var _loader:DisplayObject = new MyLoader();
    _loader.visible = true;
    Works perfectly.
    var _loader:ILoader = new MyLoader();
    _loader.visible = true;
    Casts a compiler error. Cannot access static property "visible" to a ILoader etc. etc.
    Doesn't make much sense to me, since the class extends a Sprite anyway...
    Am I missing something?
    thanks
    Filippo

    cast _loader as a Sprite (or DisplayObject);
    the flash compiler needs help remembering what's what.
    var _loader:ILoader=...
    Sprite(_loader).visible=true;

    I recently ported my project to a new PC. Everything seems to run fine uncompiled, and I am able to build an executable without issue. This application is for a Windows machine, and I am not using the Report Generation Toolkit. However, I shut down my computer last night and when I booted it up this morning my Build Specification now opens fine and I am able to edit it. My only thought as to why it occured in the first place is that I had added several files to user.lib and instr.lib and restarted LabVIEW, but it appears that it required my computer to be restarted as well.

  • How to get the .class file for the extended Controller .java file

    Hi,
    I did the below steps.
    1. Created New OAWorkspace
    2. Created New project
    3. Imported the page .xml file
    4. Added new .java file by extending the controller class
    5. Added code in the .java file.
    6. Ran the .xml file
    As I copied all the folders from Unix box, the page was opened.
    But My question was where can I see the .class file the extended controller. It's a .java file. How to compile and get the .class file for this .java file. If I get this .class file, I can go to the page and click the personlize page. and change the Controller name to the new path by ftp ing the new class to the cust.oracle.apps.pos.changeorder.webiui.
    Please let me know how to create the .class file.
    Thanks,
    HP

    All are Java files are stored in JDEV_INSTALL_DIR:\jdevhome\jdev\myprojects\
    In your case the path java would be
    JDEV_INSTALL_DIR:\jdevhome\jdev\ myprojects \cust\oracle\apps\pos\changeorder\webui\
    AND
    Once you compile the java file in Jdeveloper, Class files get generated @ below path
    In your case the path of class would be
    JDEV_INSTALL_DIR:\jdevhome\jdev\ myclasses \cust\oracle\apps\pos\changeorder\webui\

    Thank you in advance.
    Jeff

    Look at the javadoc for Hashtable. The get method returns an Object. You will need to cast it to a Class object.
    Class selected_object = (Class)ht.get( "my_class_name" );If you are using JDK5.0, then you should look up generics.

    According to the spec, cast conversion is allowed since the types are not
    probably distinct.
    I thus believe this is a bug in javac.

    You can get around this with a double cast.
    Class<A<B>> clazz2 = (Class<A<B>>) (Class) clazz1
    Ugly, but it compiles. :(Or simply:
    Class<A<B>> clazz2 = (Class) clazz1However, I suspect that the OP wasn't really looking
    for a work around ;-) I have noted the problem and
    will file a javac bug if it isn't a dupe.

  • Why can't I use Get LV Class Default Value in a dynamic VI?

    I am attempting to override a VI that uses "Get LV Class Default Value" and getting an error that I don't understand.  My parent class, "ANT Message Class", has two children - "ANT Command Class" and "ANT Response Class".  The children share a lot of data and functionality, including the factory pattern that the parent class' "Load Message Class" VI implements (see image).  I would like to override this VI with a Command version and a Response version, which would simply call the Message version with their respective classes overriding the dynamic input and output terminals.  However, I am getting the error "Front Panel Terminal 'ANT Message Class Out': Run-time type not propagated from dynamic input to dynamic output."
    Not sure how to get around this one.  Any ideas?

    The To More Specific node is dealing with compile-type inference. In this case, you are loading a default instance from disk and then attempting to cast to the base Message class. However the type you are casting to is going to a dynamic output - this gives the compiler no assurances that the input class at run-time on the dynamic input will be the same as the output type; only that it will be a type at the top of the hierarchy. Dyanmic dispatch inputs/outputs must be the same type to guarantee some form of type safety.
    You need the Preserve node there so that you can guarantee the class at both dynamic dispatch terminals will be the same type.
    However this is probably not the best mechanism for a factory method. Factory methods should ideally be static; their job is to provide an instance of the right type (e.g loaded by path as per your example) and you don't need an instance of a class to do that. The only reason I can think of to over-ride said functionailty in a dynamic dispatch method is to provide some form of custom construction for the creation of the type. If all you are creating is an instance with nothing but the default private data then there is no reason to over-ride in the child classes.

  • Class Inside MovieClip Giving Runtime Error

    Hey guys.
    I'm trying to place an instance of a movieclip (instance
    name: tehMovieClip) from the library within another movieclip
    (instance name: parentMovieClip) on the stage. tehMovieClip, the
    movieclip going inside another movieclip, belongs to a class called
    CollisonDetection (linkage properties, class:CollisonDetection,
    Base Class: flash.display.MovieClip). When I put tehMovieClip
    inside parentMovieClip, I get this runtime error:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of
    a null object reference.
    If I just place tehMovieClip on the stage by itself, it works
    fine but I need it to be inside parentMovieClip. So what should I
    do?
    Just for your information, CollisonDetection extends the
    project's DocumentClass which extends MovieClip.
    Thanks in advanced!

    Thanks for that buddy.

    The movieclip in question (the one I am placing inside
    another movieclip) is linked to a class.

    Well this is my current constructor:
    public function CollisonDetection() {
    playerRefFromCollisonDetection.x = 600;
    Now that you've said that, I deleted that middle line and it
    seemed to work

    And solution will be to update the class' constructor to have
    no parameters.
    Thanks buddy, but what if I need to have statements inside
    the constructor such as triggering methods/functions inside the
    class?
