EXTERNAL APPS TIER REDIRECTING ME FROM APPSLOGIN TO APPSLOCALLOGIN. R12

Question

My internal node works fine. I setup my external node to come in through a reverse proxy. Everything appears to be setup correctly according to Note 380490.1 I am able to come in from the external web address and view a static page like https://reverseproxyserver/OA_HTML/zoneReadme.htm but as soon as I try to hit the login page
https://reverseproxyserver/ or https://reverseproxyserver/OA_HTML/AppsLogin
I get redirected to http://reverseproxyserver/OA_HTML/AppsLocalLogin.jsp
this is a r12 instance thk

My topology is similar to Figure F9 I have 1 middle tier app server that is acting as both an internal and external node running on different ports.
Internal processes are on port pool 3 and external process are on port pool 4.
I basically followed the instructions which are right there under Figure F9. These instructions basically say you can run 2 sets of services from the same shared code tree.
however later in the note I find this:
Known Restrictions
Sharing file systems between the external web tiers and the internal middle tiers is not supported in any deployment option. However, sharing applications file systems such as APPL_TOP among external web tiers or among internal middle tiers is supported.
So which is correct?
