Faces Duplicate file deletion

I am migrating from iPhoto to Aperture 3 & will be using a Referenced Library.
I notice in my finder directory of photo's that I have 1000's of duplicate images mainly having extended file names like:
__,__, Joy & ___face5.jpg
__,__, Joy & ___face5 (3).jpg
__,__, Joy & ___face4.jpg
that were created by iPhoto.
If I delete these files containing the word "face" in finder BEFORE importing to a new library will my new library recognise the Face without re-creating new face references?
Any other tips on cleaning up my Finder tree of photo's before creating my library would be great
Thanks

The duplicates you are asking about are thumbnails to be used in the Faces View. Aperture will not import these thumbnails if you import your iPhoto Library properly from Aperture. There is no need to weed out and corrupt your iPhoto Library before you import the images to Aperture. It is better to keep the iPhoto Library in working conditition until all images are safely imported to Aperture. Otherwise you will not be able to use the iPhoto Browser from Aperture.
It seems to me that you want to give up iPhoto entirely, but to reference the iPhoto images from Aperture inside the iPhoto Library? If you do not need iPhoto any longer, it would be safer and cleaner to relocate the masters to a folder outside iPhoto after the import to Aperture.
I'd suggest to import your iPhoto Library to Aperture like this:
Back up your iPhoto Library, if you do not have a working backup
In Aperture select
File -> Import -> iPhoto Library      if you want to import the entire library
or
File -> Import -> Show iPhoto Browser          if you only want to import a part of your library
then relocate the master files to a folder outside iPhoto: select the newly imported iPhoto images and do
     File -> relocate masters
Now you should have all your iPhoto images safely stored as referenced masters in a folder of your choice, and you can delete your iPhoto Library, after you convinced yourself that all is well.

  • How can I easily delete duplicate files in old Time Machine archives?

I have multiple older Time Machine archives from different Macs that I have been going through manually and picking files out and copying them to another drive file by file. I'm running into massive quantities of duplicate files and the biggest problem is muliple iphoto pictures including the same picture in different sizes.
I wanted to give up and just throw the whole Time Machine archive onto another disk so I could format the one it was on and use it for something else. But I got a message reading, "The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled." So I went to manually copy each "Macintosh HD" folder for each date into it's their own respective folders. It worked but required my password for each folder and each of the 19 folders were all ~75GB. Which is impossible because all of that data was on a 500GB drive.
What should I do? This has become a two month long nightmare.

I really don't know exactly, but since no one else has a answer I'll give it a shot.
I don't know much about TimeMachine at all, however I did assist someone that their TM was corrupted and they needed to salvage what they could off the drive, so I'll start with that.
There is software called Data Rescue and it's designed to read the 1's and 0's of any data on the drive, deleted or not, regardless of the file structure, and output the results to another drive.
TimeMachine tries to save space, so it uses what appears to be duplicate files, but contain no data as they are placemarks for files in later states that went unchanged from the previous states.
If Data Rescue has the option of recovering files independently of the file/folder structure this would result in all your files from the recoved TM drive being on all one level on the second drive.
From that second drive one could run software called DeCloner, which would flag the actual duplicate files of content, not just by name.
The next stage perhaps would be to eliminate files with no data, the placeholders, using the Finder "size" as a sorting option.
Saving all this remaining content to another drive to work on further, perhaps all the remaining image files can be seperated, sorted according to largest size, the largest ones (usually the ones you want to keep as they contain more quality)  and opened into iPhoto or Aperture for further refinement as you add a small batches of smaller image sizes in to compare with the larger versions for duplicates/unwanted sizes.

PS CS4 64-bit (in Web Premium CS4) on Win 7 PC.  I did a duplicate file check on my hdd and deleted dup files. Now when I try to run PS 64-bit I get "Some of the application components are missing from the Application directory, Please reinstall the application." When I do this, it seems to install correctly until the very end, then it says "Installation Complete With Errors", and when I try to run I get the same 'component missing message'. What can I do? PS 32 bit runs fine. Some of the other applications ib Web Premium say the shortcut has been changed or removed. I appreciate your help...Thank you

Best advice I can think of is to uninstall and run the Clean Script from here.

  • How can I compare and delete duplicate files?

I have nearly two terabytes of images stored in my image archives and I'm sure that there are many duplicates.  Is there an easy way to compare and delete duplicate files to save space on my drives?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
The's no "easy" way, even if they're the same size, name, etc., they can be different qualities or even contents, so they really have to be compaed byte by byte, but...

Thanks, this is not an ideal answer but probably the most sensible one in my case.
I will try it unless someone has a better suggestion, but I'll wait a bit as it will take me a few days anyway (I had actually tried to create a new smaller playlist or download by album, but at this stage the music app is not letting me queue a list of songs for download - I think I will have to disable and re-enable iTunes match which will probably delete all the songs).
I have to say I am not very impressed with Apple here - having an online backup of all your data and beeing able to restore it to a new device easily was a strong selling point of iCloud. For music, they are Definitly not delivering at the stage.

  • Find and delete duplicate files on my macbook pro?

How can I find and delete duplicate files on my macbook pro. Just that i have so many and i think it is wasting a lot of memory etc on my mac! is there a simple and easy way to do so. Like i know in itunes you can just go to one of the opitions and show duplicates, is there anything like that with finder for my whole macbook?
    Thanks in advance!:)

Decloner will compare the files themselves, not just by name or size.
For the latest version and faster updates, also to give the developer a extra 30%, choose the developers site version, simply hold control or option key to temporarily turn off Mountain Lion's annoying Gatekeeper to run the app.

  • Finding and deleting duplicate files

I apologize in advance if I didn't search effectively enough, but having found no discussion of my problem, here it is:
Is there a way to find, select and delete duplicate files on my hard drive? I know they exist, and would like to see them listed so I can delete This would be text, photo and movie files. Thanks in advance.
    Peace,
    SredniVashtar
P.S. I'm using ilife 08 which has produced a lot of occult duplicate clip files. If anyone knows why mac eliminated the "create a still frame" option, I'd love to hear it...

Go to http://macupdate.com/ and search "duplicates". There are some different utilities for photos, movies and tunes. Although Spring Cleaning will do all, I would stay away from that one or be VERY careful what you delete. Make sure they are only user files in your Home, not system files or Library files.

    Hello WGT52,
It sounds like this error message is preventing you from syncing your content to the iPod. I would recommend the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

  • Help: there is a way to delete duplicate files in itune?

every time when im importing music on my itunes is storing the files in the itunes music folder. now i have to backup this folder and the size is more than 80GB. i found that there are many duplications of songs. is there any easy way to delete duplicate files and songs that are unchecked from itunes playlist?
    thank you

Robert Jacobson has written a duplicate removal script which you can download here:
    http://mysite.verizon.net/teridon/itunesscripts/
You imply that your duplicates are unchecked. You can create a playlist containing unchecked tracks. This would allow easy manual deletion.
    You need two playlists.
First create a smart playlist called "checked" containing checked items:
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
    Check "Match only checked items"
    Live updating checked
Next create a playlist with the following rule:
    Playlist is not checked.
Match only checked items not checked.
    Live updating checked
This second playlist should have all your unchecked tracks in it.
Then you can use shift del to delete the tracks from you library.

I opened iCal back up, all the dates were blank, so i started to type events into a date.
As soon as I started to double click a date to type an event, magically all the events in all the months reappeared.
I'm still puzzled why it acted this way and if I did delete something that caused it to act this way.

  • Deleting hundreds of duplicate files in Itune Library

how do I delete HUNDREDS of duplicate files that show up in my ITunes library? I guess I (or my teenagers) keep importing or adding the same files and folders back in somehow, and now I have 5 or 6 files of each song, hundreds in all. I can't delete these individually..... and the 'consolidate' thing seems to want to erase my mp3 library, I don't want that because I have an old Samsung/Napster that uses those. I just need to delete duplicate files in my Itunes library with one click. Any way to do that?

I had the same problem. I found many duplicates on my pc after moving files to an external hard drive. Some duplicates existed before this move but I did not worry about them. So, after a while my children were running out of space on their ipods so I used the "Show Duplicates" feature and deleted "the .....ing duplicates". Now my children tell me a great deal of their purchased music is missing and they are very annoyed. I told them that I thought Apple/iTunes spoke English and that Duplicate means just that, A Duplicate. This is extremely annoying. It seems like such a common sense fubar thing which is contrary to the awesome quality of the itunes/ipod in general. How do I get the songs we already *payed for* back on our computer? Or, are we screwed and in a spot where we must repurchase this music? Honestly, this is something I expect from microsoft, not Apple.

I notice there are several times this question is posed on the support group. In my google mail folder, I have notes that sometimes are duplicated up to 20 times. I've hunted for any support and can't find any. It would be great to have a clear explanation of how notes, sycning, use over mail and everything works.
