Failover SharePoint SQL Mirror steps?

Hi
I have a stretched SharePoint 2010 farm across 2 DCs.  We have a SQL server in each site (2008 R2) using asynchronous mirroring.  We use Power Pivot service application - its DB is also mirrored.  I set the failover server/database location
using PowerShell for all SP DBs.
We attempted a mirror failover last week using the following process:
1. Activated the mirrored DBs
2. Updated Power Pivot service application to point to the new failover server/db
Afterwards all SP services seemed ok - apart from Power Pivot.  We got an error about "unable to refresh data".  The reports would load but we could refresh data within those reports.
I just want to ask are we following the correct procedure in failing over?

Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the PowerPivot reports could not refresh data after changing the databases.
I recommend to make sure that the following services are running:
Excel Calculation Service; Secure Store Service;
Claims to Windows Token Service; PowerPivot Service.
And check the service account’s permission on the new database.
Please also try to point the PowerPivot service application to the former database to see if the issue still occurs.
Could you please provide more detailed error message in the ULS log?
Thanks,
Victoria

  • Project Server 2010 failover environment with Database SQL Mirroring

    Hello,
We have prod and failover environment. Failover environment created by using farm backup and restore of prod.
my question is : Can we do SQL Mirroring (from prod to failover) of 5 databases (4 PS databases and content db) to keep both the environment in sync. Will this process work in the case of Project
Server 2010. i am in doubt due to timestamp and GUID in config DB.
Also will this process is supportable.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello MOhit2020,
I haven't done this type of failover, but I think you would need to setup all your SharePoint  and project databases to use a SQL Alias to point to your production databases.  When and if your production databases failed, you would update
your SQL Alias to point to the mirror location.
The other nice feature about having SQL Alias setup in SharePoint, is that in the future, if you switch to another SQL Server, the SQL alias makes it easier to handle.

  • Simple SQL Mirror Failover Setup?

    Hello,
I would think this would be very simple however I can't find a single Adobe document with any information about it!
In ColdFusion 10 under the Data Sources / SQL Server there is a Connection String box...
From my hours of Google Searching it SEEMS like all you have to do is add: AlternateServers=(X.X.X.X:1433) to that box and SQL Mirroring failover should work and be automatic...is this correct?
If anyone has any documentation or experience with this I would greatly appreciate your input...it doesn't seem like this should be all that complicated...or unique...but all the info I find on this is either really old or not really pertaining to this simple setup.
FYI SQL Servers are Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 (I think SP2).
    Thanks!

    Seriously? Nothing? Bump!

  • RDS 2012 R2 Connection broker in HA mode SQL mirroring issue

    Hi,
I have an issue where our two brokers will not connect to the failover database when the database fails over.
    Our setup:
Database - 2 x SQL 2012 Standard with the RDCB database mirrored in high safety with automatic failover mode.
Brokers/Web gateways - 2 x server duel role servers in different subnets. They're configured in HA mode
I won't include the session hosts as it's out of scope for this issue.
So the RD database connection string has been set to:
DatabaseConnectionString : DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=server2\instance2,5555;Failover_Partner=server1\instance1,5555;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=RDCB
So when this was first set, the DB was failed over and it worked. It was then failed back to the correct principal but now when failed over to the Failover_Partner it will not connect.
I've confirmed the SQL permissions and custom port aren't an issue.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    Stephen Turner

    Hi Stephen,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Did you receive any specific error\Event ID for your issue?
Apart it seems there is some misconfiguration issue for failover cluster. If connections are empty, that means broker servers are not connecting to the mirror server database, most common problem is database security in mirror server. So check all brokers have
full access to the mirror database and mirror database saved folder.
For more information to recheck the steps you can go through following articles.

  • Lync 2013 SQL Mirroring

I have Lync server 2013 SQL mirroring in place.  My firm is looking to decrease our SQL server count. Can I collocate none Lync databases on the Mirror Lync SQL instance? Thanks.

    Hi TTMing,
It’s not recommend collocating Lync Server databases with other databases, this might affect availability and performance.
    Form https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398990%28v=ocs.15%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
“If you collocate Lync Server databases with other databases, we highly recommend assessing all factors that might affect availability and performance, as well as ensuring that, if one node fails, the remaining node can handle the load. To verify failover
capabilities, we recommend testing all failover scenarios. ”

  • Lync 2013 sql mirroring with different doamin sql server.

    Hi,
can I create lync BE sql mirroring with different domain sql server with one AD forest?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You can note the sentence “Using Topology Builder or cmdlets to set up and remove SQL mirroring is supported only when the primary, mirror, and witness (if desired) servers all belong to the same domain. If you want to set up SQL mirroring among servers
in different domains, see your SQL Server documentation.” In the link below:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204992.aspx
So I think in Lync server if you use Topology Builder or cmdlets to set up and remove SQL mirroring only if when the primary, mirror, and witness (if desired) servers all belong to the same domain. If you want to set up SQL mirroring among servers in different
domains you may do some steps on SQL server and you can also post a case on SQL forum, thank you for your understanding.

  • Remove Corrupted Sharepoint SQL Reporting Services

    Hi,
I had my sharepoint 2013 foundation with sharepoint-SQL reporting services integrated removed from my server 2012. And I removed my sharepoint folders and regedit files for sharepoint manually to ensure complete uninstallation of sharepoint from my server.
But now I did a reisntall of sharepoint and it works completely fine, but when I tried to install the reporting services again I cant as it says it is already installed but the service is not listed in my sharepoint Services list and when i tried removing
the reporting service using the SQL installer from control panel it exits with an error

Install the sharepoint reporting services add-in to the exact same drive where you installed it before using the MSSQL installation file, now uninstall the add-in and the reporting service feature from the control panel. This will remove the corrupted
files completely and now do a fresh installation

  • Sharepoint SQL Reporting Services Add-In

    Hi,
I have installed the Sharepoint SQL reporting services Add-in in one of my application servers and when I call the sites created from the application server itself they show the add-in feature in them in the "site features "list. But when I call
the same site from a WFE in the farm with no add-in installed the the site doesn't show the add-in feature in the "site Feature" list.
This is not supposed to happen as I have tried the same in another farm and the add-in was needed to be installed only in the application server and it would automatically be shown in sites even when they are called from a WFE or anywhere.

SSRS in SharePoint Integrated mode requires the installation of two components.  SSRS in SharePoint Integrated mode only needs to be installed on one App server.  But the SSRS SharePoint Add-in needs to be installed on all the WFEs and the app
server where SSRS in SharePoint Integrated mode is installed.  Not sure how you got it to work in the other farm.  Take a look at the following article:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh479775.aspx
You will note in the diagram that the Add-in is installed on each WFE.

  • Activate Reporting Services on My Sharepoint SQL SERVER Databse ?

    Hi,
I have small sharepoint farm (1 FW and 1 SQL).
I can't find if it's recommended or not to activate and use Reporting Services on the SHAREPOINT SQL SERVER Instance ?
I wouldn't want to decrease my global farm performance.
    Thank you for helping.
    Regards

SSRS integrated must run on a server that has SharePoint installed and joined to the farm. That will have a significant impact on the SQL Database Engine server from a memory contention and CPU utilization perspective.

  • SSRT + SQL-mirror

I have an SQL-mirror (SRV1.example.com, SRV2.example.com) added into DPM 2010. I'm trying to allow some users to restore some databases from that mirror. I created a new DPM role and added SRV1.example.com as SQL Server Instance at the "Specify Recovery
Items" page. I also added one of the databases, users have to restore, just as 'DB1'. Next, when I try to restore this DB through SSRT, it says me I have no databases available to recovery.
I ensure my account is in group assigned to DPM role and affected databases have valid recovery points. The datasource's DisplayPath and LogicalName look like 'SRV1\DB1' but when I try to add this string as database name, I get an error "SQL
Server database with name, SRV1\DB1 and SQL Server instance name, srv1.example.com could not be found". If I leave Database Name blank, I can restore any DB from that SQL-mirror with SSRT.
How can I restrict users with only some databases to restore at my SQL-mirror?

As we found out, there are some inconsistencies happened in our DPMDB, preventing filter from correctly works. We rebuilt our DPM server.

    Hi,
Quick question. Whilst I understand that the high availability options for back end services need to be the same for both sets of paired pools, can we deploy

I am not sure on the MS best practice answer, although I suspect it will be something about them being identical :) But it does work. I've done it before for a short period, whilst waiting for an additional SQL Server license and it seemed to work without
    any obvious issues.

  • SQL mirroring or SQL mirroring?

    Hi,
Lync Topology builder is able to build the SQL mirroring between the hosts. But what about if SQL team like to avoid that to use that? I mean is there big differences if the mirroring is built by topology team, or by SQL own tools?
    And how is the supporting?
    Technet says about
mirroring "You use Topology Builder to deploy SQL mirroring
". But it does not clarify if there are any differences if the mirroring is built by built in tools of SQL.
    Petri

you still can build the Mirror using SQL Management Studio. as long as you have configured all Lync server host names in SQL Security with correct permission,
Lync should be able to manage the mirror. I had to do this on one of the sites and it's functioning without any issues.
When you say, Lync should be able to manage the mirroring, what do you exactly mean by that? How much Lync actually care about the mirroring? Especially in case when witness is not deployed.
Also if there is a fail over on the SQL site which is initialized by the SQL itself (e.g. SQL team member does the fail over). How much that affect for the Lync?
