Failure of display hinge on ZV6201CL laptop

Noted several inquiries on this subject with no practical or easy solution because the units are mostly out of warranty and worse, the replacement part is no longer available.
The failure of the hinge relate to excessive friction in the true steel hinge, forcing the aluminum portion that is attach to it [holding it to the display/cover], to break due to excessive torque. The purpose of the friction is to allow the display to hold in different positions. But it seems that in time, perhaps through loss of "lubrication" [if any], it get very stiff.
I am in the second replacement of this pair of hinges for this particular unit. Lubrication has NOT helped much. It is still quite stiff. Should the steel cylinder around the pin need loosening up? I tried Teflon, which is the most slippery oil available.
Anybody had a similar experience or suggestions?
As to availability of the hinge, I got two in EBay and there are more offered at a reasonable price.  Dismantling the display is delicate but actually simple, The main unit only requires the removal of the piece behind the keyboard by taking of several screws. As always, first remove the battery. Good luck and do lt at your peril.

  • Loose Display Hinge - What to do

I've got a Rev B MBA. It is under Applecare Warranty for another 2 yrs. I've read comments about loose display hinges etc. Mine has a bit of play, I can move it back & forth maybe 1/2 inch or less. Now it may have been caused when I tripped on the power cable and the open MBA dropped to the carpeted floor (less than 2 ft) landing on one side (don't remember which side); but the magnetic power cable didn't separate, maybe because the MBA is much lighter than other laptops.
I just moved so I'm too far from an Apple Store to have someone look at it. Locally there is an Authorized Apple dealer, but they said they never worked on an MBA and maybe the hinge mechanism can be tightened if I leave it with them for a few days.
    1. Does anyone know if in an MBA something could be tightened/adjusted to fix the problem?
    2. Would Applecare cover the MBA if it was caused by that drop (even though the magnetic power cable should have separated from the MBA)?
    3. I'm always of the opinion if it isn't broke don't fix it. I've read here where others have sent their MBAs to be fixed but came back with other problems, therefore I'm hesitant to have it fixed.
4.Although I can live with this loose hinge problem, I've read somewhere if you don't have something fixed soon and it gets worse, the Applecare Warranty won't apply.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks to those who responded. I did send in my MacBook Air, and as others describe it was simple, fast (3 days), and free (with Applecare Coverage).
Here are a few lessons I learned about the process, others can correct me if my assumptions are off:
    1. Always backup your hard drive regardless of your repair issue. I had a backup that was 1 month old (because of my recent move), I should have backed it up before I mailed it.
    2. Remove your firmware password from your OS (used to prevent a clean install)
    3. Setup a Guest Account that does NOT require a password for access to the Mac OS (otherwise they will ask for your Master Password).
Number 2 is what I did NOT do. Although it was a loose hinge problem they REPLACED my 128 GB SSD (plus other things). I suspect they did this not because something was wrong with the drive but because they could NOT access it. My assumptions are that they go through a set of quality checks as part of the standard repair process; so that if something shows up as defective etc. they go ahead and repair it. Don't expect Apple to call you if they encounter a problem with your Mac; it would slow their quick turn around process.

  • How do I connect a mac cinema display to a dell laptop with VGA output?

I need to connect my coworkers Mac Cinema display to his Dell Laptop with VGA out, running Windows 7. We have a VGA to DVi adapter, but it doesn't work. Do we need a different adapter or a driver? Thanks.

DVI-I offered by most computers has support for up to a wider-than-1920 Digital display AND a complete set of VGA signals in it.
If you have an adapter from DVI [computer] to VGA [display] it has no conversion logic in it and should be called a VGA extractor. It will NOT work the other direction.
I think what you need is a better computer or a worser (VGA) display.

Hard Drive Failure on HP DV 6000 Pavilion laptop - Need Data Recovery Help
HP Pavilion DV 6108 NR, RG365UA, purchased in late 2006 at Best Buy, with Windows XP, upgraded to Service Pack 3. It has a Fujitsu hard disk, 60 gigabyte, partitioned into C: and a Recovery D:.
Windows tries to boot up, but goes to blue screen with the message: "Unmountable Boot Volume" for one second, then just keeps recycling until I force a shutdown.
BIOS Phoenix, hard drive test result: " #1-08 Fail "
I ran a disk analysis/recovery program on the Cdrive and it seemed to show the directory structure intact, and it was able to recover some files. I was using the free one from Seagate (which only recovers small files). The second pass didn't run so well, and during the third run the program said I should not proceed further, and I should contact a professional disk recovery company.
However, the D drive seems to be intact, so, I wonder if the disk is corrupted or just some aspect of the logical C drive is bad.
How can I get the D: to run the recovery software on it? The recovery disks, made by Best Buy, only proceed to the R / F / Q option screen, and when I press R, I get a blue screen every time.
Tapping the F10 key during startup gets me nowhere. Ditto the F11 key.
I dont care about the hard disk; it is the data (files, docs, images, etc)  that I want.

    Hi @goshenguy
Thank you for your inquiry, I am happy to help.
I grasp you tested the hard drive from the bios and it failed.  This tests the physical aspcects of the hard drive and when it fails it does require replacement.  You were able to retrieve some of your files using recovery software but not all.
Your recovery partition is still intact and when you try to do a recovery with the disks from Best Buy you do not get past these options R / F / Q  but will not proceed.
Here is a link to Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows XP, 2006 or Later) that may assist you in performing a recovery.
Here is a link to the Maintenance and Service Guide HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook PC. Please note chapter 3 page 42 for a replacement hard drive part number.
    HP Parts, HP Replacement Parts
If you are still unable to do the recovery, you could try contacting Best Buy for assistance with the recovery kit they provide.
I don't know if it is possible, but you may want to check cloning software to see if you could clone the D partion to the new drive or connect both drives and  try a drive to drive copy of the D partition.
If you were able to successfully put the D partition on a new hard drive you should be able to do a recovery from the  D partition  to take it back to factory.
If none of the above has allowed you to successfully do a recovery, I suggest contacting Best Buy to see it they have  options other then purchasing  a  third party recovery kit.
    Good Luck!

  • Original display properties on g7 laptop

Can anyone tell me the original display properties on g7 laptop? My gamma, contrast, and brightness are all off. The icons are very washed out and hard to see. I've tried adjusting them, but can't quite get them right. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    Hello r2dw,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I have read your post on how you are looking to restore the original display properties on your g7 laptop, and I would be happy to assist you! To begin, I will need to ask you a few questions:
What is the Product and Model Number of your notebook computer?
What version of Windows do you have installed on your computer?
Has your computer completed all of its important Windows Updates?
Have you updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant?
Is this an on-going, or recent issue?
In the meantime, I recommend removing and reinstalling the graphics driver for your notebook. This can be done by going into Programs and Features to remove the graphics driver for your computer. To re-install it, please follow this document on Downloading or Updating Software and Drivers for HP Computers. This should help you find the HP drivers for your graphics card. Upon re-installation, your display should be reset back to default properties.
If the issue persists, I also suggest following this document on How to perform a clean boot in Windows. This should help determine if your display will appear on default settings with minimal drivers and background programs.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

Is the thunderbolt display compatible with Dell laptop (Latitude 6430)?

Since the specs for the Dell laptop (Latitude 6430) do not list ThunderBolt as one of the supported bus structures that means it does not have a ThunderBolt port to connect the ThunderBolt display to. Hence is not compatible.

  • Loose 27" display hinge?

I just got my 27" iMac CTO last week and right out of the box I noticed the display hinge is loose enough to the point where if the table it's sitting on is bumped, the display will tilt fully downwards.
Is there any way to fix this without parting with it? I have projects that I'm currently working on so I can live with it for the meantime.
    Anyone else with this problem?
    Thanks!

I found the below on a different Mac forum. Perhaps some of these instructions can be used to remove its rear stand, expose its TORX screws and allow one to "tighten the hinge up" themselves.
If under 1 year warranty or under extended AppleCare support, I'd "call it in" and get them to tighten up the hinge screw. Assuming one can live without their computer for a few days.
    Good luck....
I found my VESA Mount Adapter manual, but it doesn't have instructions for removal, but perhaps reversing the installation instructions will do the trick. Here's the relevant parts:
Turn your iMac so that the back is facing you, then rotate the top forward until it won't go any further.
Release the latch by inserting the *access card* (thick plastic credit card ??) in the space directly above the top of the stand. The access card should go into the space at a slight upward angle for about 3/4 of an inch. If it goes further in, you've missed the latch, so try again.
Rotate your iMac forward until the 8 screws on top of the stand are visible and the stand is locked in place. Important: Keep your iMac upright until the stand is locked in place.
Hold the sides of your iMac and carefully lay it down so that the screen is resting on a soft towel or cloth on a flat surface and the stand hangs over the edge of your work surface.
Use the Torx tool to remove the 8 screws that attach the stand to the back of your iMac.
I'm surprised about two things: that there aren't explicit removal instructions in the manual, and that Apple doesn't have a pdf of this manual in their online support documentation. That is sloppy support on Apple's part.

Apple TV  light is flashing and displaying to connect to laptop to restore but I don't not own a laptop. can I restore with the remote ?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I assume when you say you do not own a laptop, that you do not own a computer of any kind.
If you don't have a friend that has a computer that runs iTunes, then you can always take it into the nearest Apple Store and they will restore it for you.

  • Display affected while moving laptop hinge

I have an HP Pavilion m4-1012tx Notebook PC. Off late, it is experiencing issues while opening and closing the lid. Some coloured vertical lines appear and disappear, flickering, on the left side of the screen, only while the lid is in movement. Once, a line appeared on the right side of the screen and stayed for about 30 minutes.
The laptop has suffered no physical damage that I know of. If it is relevant, I'll add that the laptop has been serviced by HP twice in the past year - the motherboard was replaced once due to a complete failure and the WiFi card was replaced later. The laptop is still under warranty.
What should I do to fix it? Is there anything I can do myself, or will I have to take it to an HP service center?

    Its most likely lcd cable.

  • New Macbook Air 11" 2014 Model Display Hinge Loose and exacerbated by extremely poor service

I have bought a new MacBook Air 11 from Ezone on the 3rd of October.  When I opened the product, I realised that the hinge seemed to be loose and would fall back on its own when tilted. That's when my troubles started.
I went to the Maple Apple Authorised Service Center at Santa Cruz, Mumbai and was told that the product was fine and that the screen tilt was 'normal'.
I then happened to visit some other stores and noticed that the MacBooks on display didn't swing back the same way.
I returned to the Service Center again and was told again that it was 'normal'. When I demanded to see the manager, I was told he had left for the day. I rang him and was told that I should come and see him the next day and he would provide a speedy resolution to the problem.
I rang the store that I'd purchased it from and they told me that they would be happy to replace the product provided the service center gave a certificate called DOA.
The next day was an even more harrowing experience. When I reached the manager's office, he tried telling me again that the product was 'normal'. When I explained to him that none of the in store models were like that, he said that to give the certificate, he would need at least 2 days as there was a 'process' to be followed. The 'process' is to merely record how the display flips back when tilted back.
I tried to call Apple Customer Care and spoke to Nishant and then Ravi (who told me that he usually never spoke to customers directly but as a special case was speaking to me since I'd had a bad experience!).
Ravi, assured me of a ideal resolution within 24 hours.
And so today, I received a call from Nishant, who informed me that because of the nature of the inconvenience, Apple had decided to offer 2 solutions: 1. They would ship a new machine from Singapore directly to my home address but that would take 4-5 business weeks. I was fine with that solution although I didn't understand the merit of sending a new laptop from Singapore. However, he then told me that I would FIRST have to submit the laptop and ONLY THEN would they ship it out to me. So essentially, I would be without a laptop for next month and a half! In short, a ridiculous solution. 2. The second solution was that I would have to give my BRAND NEW laptop (less than 2 weeks old!) to the service centre, they would repair it and return it in a few days. So we were back to square one. When I tried to understand the escalation process, I was curtly told that there was no escalation and this was Apple's response and resolution to my problem.
So, I, the unhappy customer, was given no choice except to turn  in my machine to the service centre whereas, GLOBALLY, Apple would have replaced the machine if it was less than 2 weeks old!
Absolutely pathetic experience with no keenness to help except have longwinded calls that provided no solution whatsoever.
And this to a customer who's just bought a brand new machine and is expecting a spectacular experience! Even Lenovo or Sony offer onsite support, so the Apple experience is a terrible, terrible letdown.
I feel cheated and downright stupid for having paid such a premium for a product with manufacturing defect followed with such extraordinarily poor service!

  • PB display hinge busted :(

Ok..owning this power beast for now 4 yrs. the hinge on the rt.side of the

When it cracked the wires to the display became exposed and my screen
went black! Uhh.. I thought it was a goner but carefully aligned where the
display slipped and it seems to be ok..only with a busted hinge.
Does anyone know how much this may cost to repair or is it something

Sorry in the delay to respond but wanted to wait until I received my PB
    back from repairs.
Yes.. I DID have it fixed via Mac ResQ! Thanks for the recommendation Chris
I got my PB yesterday and BOTH hinges was repaired/replaced.
MRQ has done these MANY times over for our titanium PBs.
    They did a great job!
Nice customer service, 90 day warranty for parts & labor..
out the door cost?? under $350.
I had to get some work done to the inverter cable where the insulation
got damaged. Got pinched where the hinge broke.
Call them if you have any ??'s it saved me from possibly buying a new PB
(McBook Pro?) which I will do at some point soon.
If you see your cables (pink/wht.) showing through the more you open/close
the screen the cables will wear & get damaged.
If you love you TiBook (I sure DO as it's been a GREAT workhorse!!) it may
    be worth to fix this.
I think any damage over $450-$500 to a laptop or any computer may be
due consideration in getting an updated system. Of course based on one's
    situation.
I thought I was able to get insurance coverage for this, but I couldn't.
Also looked to Apple about the hinge issue as this seems to be a common
issue with these TiBooks. No luck there
I really pushed this one on to Apple..but they declared it wasn't poor design
    or a structural defect.. growl
Alot of hair pulling and grumblings, but ultimately the PB is still kicking
    strong!
Wondering if you were successful in fixing this
problem? The same thing happened to my Titanium
Powerbook G4 667Mhz last weekend. (My hinge broke off
where it connects to the display itself.) Been
looking at hinges on ebay, but not sure I have the
correct tools or instructions to handle the job?
As with your issue, when I open/close the laptop, I
have to be careful not to pinch the display cables
that show where the hinge mis-aligns. Once I open, if
I am really careful, the cables stay in place, out of
site - but this morning at least one of the smaller
(blue) wires has broken - but amazingly, the display
    is still working.
Appreciate insights from anyone who has successfully
    solved this problem by themself.

  • Yoga 2 Pro display/screen wobble in laptop or stand mode

Been looking around but can't find anyone mentioning the screen/display wobble when using the yoga 2 pro in laptop or stand mode.  That baffles me.  I tried normal touching on the screen on the Yoga 2 Pro at Best Buy in laptop and stand modes and the display bounces back and forth horribly.  I can't believe this wouldn't be a deal breaker for many people unless most people just aren't using the touch screen (in those modes) that much.  And if they aren't, what's the point of having the touch screen (other than tablet mode).  Windows 8 is meant to be used with a touch screen in ANY mode.
So, can anyone comment on their experiences with a wobbling/bouncing screen/display?

Hmmm.  Wonder if you've actually used the Yoga 2 Pro.  Or maybe you're trying a little too hard to defend your expensive purchase.  Either way, calm down, buddy.  This system seems nice, just not for me with that wobble when *BARELY* touching the screen.  The Surface Pro 2 solves the issue with a backstand.  The Samsung Ativ series doesn't seem to have this issue.  And, yes, both of those are comparable systems.
I actually searched a little longer and DID find others complaining about it on the Yoga 2 Pro.  It may not be a dealbreaker for you, but it is for some.  Its irrelevant if it "comes with the territory...for this form factor" if it distracts *enough* from its usefulness (and thats putting it nicely).
