Fakeraid on Vaio Z21

Hi, so I have a Vaio Z21 that Im trying to get Arch installed and running on. The major hurdle Im facing so far is the fact that the Z21 comes with basically two SSD's in raid 0. So I checked the Arch wiki article on fakeraid and noticed the following.
Warning: Command "dmraid -ay" could fail after boot to Arch linux Release: 2011.08.19 as image file with initial ramdisk environment does not support dmraid. You could use an older Release: 2010.05. Note that you must correct your kernel name and initrd name in grubs menu.lst after installing as these releases use different naming
It seems this is still valid. Is there any way to solve this without using a 4 year old install image?
Cheers!

Yes, I have heard of this happening before, but I do not remember exactly what the solution was.  Something like deleting the user profile, then recreate it.

  • Dwm.exe starts consuming lots of CPU when machine is idle

    Since doing a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro RTM x64 English on my Sony Vaio Z21 laptop, I've been bothered by a sudden increase in fan noise whenever I leave the machine idle for a while and the displays are turned off. Finally decided to try and get to
    the bottom of it today, so I ran the Performance Recorder with the CPU usage profile enabled and brought up the relevant graphs in Performance Analyzer. See the below screen shot for the results.
    I started the trace and then left the machine alone for a while to trigger the idle behavior. It's pretty clear that Dwm.exe is the main culprit. As to why this process would find anything useful to do when all the displays are turned off is beyond me. Also
    Outlook.exe sees a significant increase of CPU usage during the same time period. Whether these two are somehow related, I have no clue. Please note that I've disabled all other processes in the graph for clarity; no other processes showed any visible increase
    during the trace.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    I'm seeing similar characteristics as some others in this thread:
    - The issue occurs when the system is idle AND the power management puts my displays on standby.
    - Modifying my power management settings so that the display is NEVER put on standby causes the issue to go away.  (The system will not show unusual CPU activity even after sitting idle for some time.)
    - When the issue occurs, dwm.exe shows some CPU activity.  dwm.exe's activity averages around 25%.  Several other applications show CPU activity as well.  Each individual application's activity averages less than 25% (so dwm.exe's activity
    is the most visible during this issue), but the total CPU activity adds up to around 60-75%.  The unusual CPU activity ceases when the monitor wakes up from standby.
    Do others participating in this thread observe that the issue goes away if they modify their power management settings so that their monitor is never allowed to go to standby?  I understand that this isn't a viable "solution" for most people,
    but I'd like to know if everyone else shares that same observation.
    I have a question (and appreciation!) for the persons genuinely contributing to this thread:  Do you see any unusual CPU activity occur in any other applications when this issue occurs?  For example, do you see a small amount of activity in explorer.exe?
    I ask this because I've watched the CPU graphs for several individual processes which happen to be running on my system.  (I've been leaving several process property windows open in Process Explorer to monitor individual process performance.  It's
    a kludgy method but it works.)  Processes such as skype.exe, steam.exe, procmon.exe (Process Monitor), and taskmgr.exe each nibble at the CPU when the problem occurs.  The effect is subtle but noticeable.  The CPU nibbling for these applications
    disappears when the monitor wakes-up from standby.
    I've also noticed that there is slightly less overall CPU consumption if all application windows are minimized when the issue occurs.  In the case of steam.exe, the unusual CPU consumption all but disappears when it is minimized.
    I believe Harri Kaimio's post has been the closest thing I've seen posted to a technical explanation for the issue.  It seems (?) that certain applications are attempting to draw something, but they are somehow blocked or otherwise unable to do so when
    the monitor is on standby.  dwm.exe plays a part in drawing, so it shows activity when this occurs.  However, instead of giving up, the applications seem to go nuts and attempt the (same?) thing frequently, thereby generating CPU activity.*
    *Please understand that these are guesses -- if someone can correct me with more technical details or procedures which would help disprove my guesses, please do show me where these guesses are wrong!  I'd love to work towards a solid explanation.
    A few more tidbits:
    - I do not run Logitech's SetPoint.exe.
    - I'm experiencing this on a desktop system.  My display adapters are:  AMD/Radeon HD 7800 series, and the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000.
    - Running Windows 7.
    - I am incredibly pleased that not a single person has suggested "defragmenting" in this entire thread.  :)

  • [SOLVED] VAIO brightness no longer working after upgrade

    Hi I used to set brightness on my VAIO VPCCAS1E, via...

  • How can I boot to a fakeRAID -Raid0 set drive from a non-raid hdd

    Hi all,
    First of all, my English is bad and I hope I can explain it what my problem is. Secondly, I need your expert help with my problem right now.
    I'll just layout some hardware information and some history before I start. Currently, my motherboard has 3 hdd controllers which are:
    1) Intel - 6 ports --> contains 2 sets of RAID drives = 2 x 60gb SSD (boot drive) and 2 x 500gb HDD (data drive) both in RAID 0
    2) Jmicron - 2 ports --> 1 port is used by the DVDROM
    3) Marvell - 2 ports --> I don't use these ports as they are slow and are so bad - currently disabled in BIOS
    HISTORY: Before, my 2 x 60gb SSDs (RAID 0) contained Arch 64 + Windows 7 64 with Grub as the main bootloader. I remembered having a hard time setting up intel fakeraid with Arch linux + Win7 dual boot before, but fortunately, with your help, I found the solution and I've been using it ever since until today.
    NOW is kind of a different issue. I bought a new 60gb SSD (just one). I totally reformatted everything with my 2 x 60gb SSD Raid 0 and I decided to just use that exclusively for windows, still in RAID 0. My brand new SSD will ONLY have Arch64 on it. So I installed Windows 7 first on my Raid SSD set. I plugged my new SSD to the Jmicron port so I can take advantage of AHCI. I don't want to mix my new SSD to the Intel Controllers since its not RAID anyway. Anyway, I installed Arch 64 on the new SSD in the JMicron Port fine.
    Now here comes the problem, I set the Jmicron port where the Arch is installed to be the primary boot in the BIOS (since GRUB is there) and I can't boot to Windows! It gives me an error that It can't find the target drive (Win7 in the Raid 0 - intel ports). I've tried modifying the menu.lst and trying so many combinations and It still fails. Of course, I can boot to Arch fine since the drive is independent. It looks like grub legacy can't boot to fakeRaid drives if its not installed on that same drive.
    Can you give me advice on how to fix this issue?
    Also, I was just thinking, is there a 3rd party Windows Bootloader, that can be installed in Raid 0, that can pick up Linux and boot from it. I was thinking of just making the Windows 7 as primary boot in BIOS, with a 3rd party bootloader, then just boot to Arch.
    Thank you!

    Yes, I have redirected my User folder to the D: drive.
    I know that some shared components must reside on the C: drive; that's fine. I just don't have room for the entire installation on there.
    The real issue here is that, when a drive other than C: is selected as the destination, the CS6 package installs into a broken state every time, out of the gate, on my system. Some components get installed to D: and some to C:, but the various components of the programs seem confused about what exists where, as shown below:
    I select a folder on D: as the destination folder for the install, and here is what I get:
    64-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the D: drive as specified, but attempting to start them results in a configuration error message stating that the program must be uninstalled and reinstalled, and lists "Error code: 1".
    32-bit versions of the package -- Program files are installed to the C: drive against what I specified. The shortcuts installed in the Start menu for the 32-bit versions point to the locations where these program files SHOULD be, on the D: drive. If the Adobe folder containing the program files is copied over to the correct location on D:, these programs function normally with no errors.
    I have the 32-bit versions working by copying the program files from C: to D:. I just want to get the 64-bit versions working as well.
    Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated; I'm really looking forward to testing the CS6 suite on my system!

    Platforms Affected
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the
    Sun JRE
    and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT,
    Windows 2000
    and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
    Description
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    When installing Oracle Products with the Oracle Universal
    Installer (8.1.x)
    on machines that use the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT, the
    installer hangs.
    Specifically for the Windows platform, the following version
    of the Symmantec
    JIT or earlier will encounter the failure:
    Symantec Java! JustInTime Compiler Version 3.10.107 for JDK
    1.2.
    Details regarding this issue can be found at:
    http://developer.intel.com/design/processor/future/manuals/knowni ssue.htm
    How to determine if you have Symmantec Java for JDK 1.2:
    1. Select the file "symcjit.dll" and right click on it.
    2. Select Properties, then the Version tab.
    3. Under Microsoft Windows*, the properties of the DLL are:
    "Symantec Java! JustInTime Compiler Version 3.10.107 for
    JDK 1.2 Copyright (C)
    1996-99 Symantec Corporation Dynamic Link Library file".
    DLLs older than this will also not work. "
    Likelihood of Occurrence
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the
    Sun JRE
    and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT,
    Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be
    affected.
    Possible Symptoms
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The failure typically is that the affected application simply
    terminates.
    Workaround
    ~~~~~~~~~~
    Not only will OUI be affected by this bug, most of the
    post-install
    configuration tools will also be affected. Running these
    tools with "-nojit"
    specified will avoid the hang, but it is not simple to specify
    "-nojit" for
    some of the products.
    The following workaround works for the Windows operating
    system:
    a. Copy only the install directory from the CD to the hard
    disk ,say, e:\temp.
    b. Open oraparam.ini and make the following modifications
    (Assuming CD
    drive is f:)
    * Change the "SOURCE=" line to use the full path to the CD
    instead of a
    relative path. (i.e., SOURCE=f:\stage\products.jar)
    * Change the "JRE_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the
    CD instead of a
    relative path. (i.e.,
    JRE_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\jre\1.1.7\1\DataFiles
    \Expanded)
    * Change the "OUI_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the
    CD instead of a
    relative path. (i.e.,
    OUI_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\oui\1.6.0.9.0\1\DataF
    iles\Expanded
    * Change the "JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS" line to add "-nojit" as the
    first argument.
    (i.e., JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit -ms16m -mx32m)
    ^^^^^^
    * Other entries should remain the same
    c. Launch setup.exe from the temporary location on your hard
    drive (i.e.
    e:\temp\install\win32\setup.exe). This will use the
    modified
    oraparam.ini and pick up the information from the CD since
    the absolute
    locations are specified.
    Choose a Custom install and choose not to create a database
    during the
    install. This way, the Database Configuration Assistant will
    not be launched
    during installation.
    The Net8 Configuration Assistant will still be launched, and
    there is no way
    to suppress it. You will need to kill the Net8 Configuration
    Assistant if it
    hangs due to the bug. The installation still will have been
    successful, and
    you can run the DBCA and NetCA after installation.
    To kill NetCA if it hangs during installation:
    In the "Configuration Tools" window, highlight the "Net8
    Configuration
    Assistant" and click "Stop". If that does not work, look for
    the most recent
    JRE process using the Task Manager, and kill it manually.
    NOTE: the OUI
    itself will also have a jre process. Be sure to kill the one
    with the most
    recent date, which should be the jre process being used for
    Net8CA, not the
    one for OUI itself.
    After killing the configuration tools and continuing through
    the installation
    to the "End of Installation" screen, you should modify the
    configuration tools
    to use "-nojit", then call the appropriate tools from the
    Start Menu.
    Once installation is complete, each of the following files in
    the ORACLE_HOME
    needs to be modified:
    assistants\dbca\dbassist.cl
    assistants\dbma\dbmig.cl
    assistants\ifa\ifa.cl
    bin\elogin.cl
    bin\owm.cl
    ldap\oidamdin\oidadmin.cl
    network\tools\netasst.cl
    network\tools\netca.cl
    owm\install\instelogin.cl
    owm\install\instowm.cl
    Edit the contents of the above files to add "-nojit" as shown
    below:
    Command=("C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.7\BIN\JREW" -nojit
    -classpath ....
    this is the only thing you need to add --> ^^^^^^
    Then, launch the necessary tools, like Net8CA and DBCA from
    the Start Menu.
    Patches
    ~~~~~~~
    Currently there is not a patched installer available to deal
    with this
    problem, the workaround listed above must be used.

    The solution of making a local copy of the installation CD on
    the hard disk and renameing symcjit.dll to symcjit.old does
    work to allow installation of Oracle Client 8.1.7 on a Pentium 4
    This function is useful and you can find two file to rename

    Windows ME
    Solution to the installation of Oraclei8.1.7 PE in Windows Millennium
    Oracle does not support installing version 8.1.7 PE into
    Windows Millennium.
    As an unsupported workaround, you may add the following line
    to the [compatibility95] section of win.ini prior to
    installation:
    Jrew=0x00080000
    After setup is complete, Oracle will recommend a reboot.
    There is one additional step necessary prior to reboot;
    Oracle may add a non-standard path statement to the
    autoexec.bat file. Please modify this SET PATH
    statement to use short-filenames if you find a quoted
    LFN string represented as part of the path. You can
    confirm that the path was merged successfully into the
    registry after reboot by examining the PATH variable
    in the registry at
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Environment
    Symptoms of a missing Oracle path statement in the registry are that Net8 Easy Config will not launch.
    Please note that Oracle does not support the use of this
    product in Windows ME, but have authorized these workarounds
    for testing purposes only.

    Windows XP Home Edition
    Oracle 8i is not certified on windows XP. Even if yes, it must be Windows XP Professional.
    You can install Oracle8i on windows XP Home Edition, try like this:
    1 - Copy your Oracle CD into hard disk in your
    machine. For example Copy from oracle8i CD into C:\Oracle\ ...
    2 - Search the two files named Symcjit.dll on the D drive (where you have copied Oracle8i. You can found them in (example):
    C:\Oracle\stage\Components\oracle.swd.jre\1.1.7.30\1
    \DataFiles\Expanded\jre\win32\bin\symcjit.dll
    3 - Rename this file (Example): symcjit_back.dll (make sure to find two files and rename them)
    4 - Execute the Oracle setup.exe from C:\Oracle\setup.exe
    ===============================================================
    When Oracle 8i dies on the install or the installer hangs, here is the fix for this, make sure that you have Service Pack 2 installed.
    1. \JRE\1.3.1\ From Sun. (You can download java program at http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/jre/download-jre-windows.html)
    2. Install the java file.
    There is also a problem in the installation disk.
    3. Make a copy of the Oracle 8i disk on the local hard disk.
    4. Do a search for the two files called symcjit.dll and rename them for example: symcjit.old.
    5. Install Oracle from the win32 directory.

  • TS3212 cant download itunes on sony vaio windows 8

    I need help please
    I purchased a sony vaio a few weeks ago with windows 8 now i cant seem to get my itunes to either download or to work
    I initially installed itunes before i activated my norton internet security and i was able to get itunes to download and play music no bother but then when i plugged my iPhone 5 in to sync to the new computer it ended up having a few problems
    1. it either said that it couldnt sync due to an error code 0xE8004002
    2. it said it couldnt read my iphone and to restore to factory settings
    on the first problem i just ejected the iphone and did a reboot and i reboot the computer also but then when i connected again i then got the second error
    so i backed everything up on icloud that i could and then  tried to restore to factory settings but then another error came up saying that due to an unknown error i could not restore the iphone
    i looked at forums and i saw that i should just manually restore from the iphone itself which i did but then icloud lost have my notes that i had but itunes recognised the phone and sync did start but then half way through said that songs could not be snyc'd due to an error and then all my music was greyed out and i couldnt play it
    Then i had to begin again with all the errors of not connecting
    i then read more forums and was advised to delete itunes then reinstall again.  I uninstalled but now i cant get it to reinstall again.  Internet explorer keeps saying download interupted when i get to 99% and it will not go any further and google chrome says pc doesnt allow download check internet settings
    please help because im about going barmy with this
    thanks

    got it to download thanks very much

    I upgraded my Sony Vaio Gate software to 2.4.0.06210 on Wednesday night. Afterwards, my mail functionality is not working with Firefox. It will work with Internet Explorer, but not with Firefox when I try to do the following such as clicking on check mail, open inbox or trying to open any views or documents.
    It will not open, but only states trying to load and indicates the following:unknown property text flow - declaration dropped and it is referencing my mail server in trying to read data from it. However, if I right click and clikd on a new tab it will read in the data and then if i open a new tab again it will open the document. It's not able to stack the data and hold it properly now for some reason. What do I need to do to get it to work with Firefox? Thanks. edit

    Hi Rick,
    do you mean I could get a direct download link to After Effects 11.0.4? So I don't have to run this patch that never seems to work?
    Hard to believe all the Adobe tech support guys I've spoken to wouldn't have mentioned that, I've spent hours and hours on the phone already....
    I will try!
    thank you

  • [SOLVED]Custom DSDT not loading - OEM battery doesn't work - Sony Vaio

    EDITING ORIGINAL POST TO POST SOLUTION so I don't do a massive bump
    Installed windows and ran the BIOS flasher that came with the battery. Didn't work until I changed a line in the plaintext configuration file (config.ini or something) it comes with. Changed "Capacity: 20" to "Capacity: -10". This changed the battery charge requirement from 20% to negative ten percent (any negative number will do), allowing the program to run and flash the BIOS. Didn't realize I could do that, but it fixed  the problem 100%.
    #### BEGIN ORIGINAL POST: ################################
    Hey guys,
    I'm a bit of a linux noob, but I've spent many hours this week trying to fix this issue on my own and have learned a lot about making custom kernels, hardware stuff, ACPI, and ABS. However, nothing I've done has worked and I've hit a wall. For reference, I'm on a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ4000 with linux-3.0 base kernel, gnome3/gdm. The battery is made in china and doesn't list a manufacturer, just model number BPS8, 52000mAh.
    [Backstory]
    So I recently got an OEM battery to replace the broken original, which hasn't worked since before I installed arch (though it worked with an Arch install I did a couple years ago). When I first plugged it in, the gnome battery symbol popped up listing the battery at 0% with an exclamation icon. I unplugged from AC power and the laptop still ran, but the battery monitor just said it was at 0% and 'Estimating' remaining time. I figured this was a glitch with gnome or just because it was this battery's first cycle so I let it run down until it hard-crashed. Then I plugged back into AC and tried to turn on the computer, but it wouldn't do anything until I removed the battery.
    Looking into the problem I discovered this was due to the ACPI firmware table DSDT being compiled for Windows, which has, shall we say, fewer restrictions on sanity than the Intel ASL compiler used for UNIX systems. Sure enough I extracted /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT to find that its section about the battery contained the entry 'Zero' for Battery Technology, which translates to "non-rechargeable", rather than 'One', which makes it chargeable. acpitool confirmed this; my system thought the battery was non-rechargeable and was constantly discharging it. Needless to say I've only been putting it in temporarily to test solutions since.
    [/backstory]
    [tl;dr] DSDT firmware contains malformed battery description, now I can't get my system to run with a custom DSDT. [/tl;dr]
    Attempted solutions:
    [1]
    Extract, modify, recompile DSDT and include it with the kernel compilation .config options
    CONIFG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT=y
    CONFIG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_FILE="/usr/src/custom_dsdt.hex
    CONIFG_STANDALONE=n
    as suggested here, a page linked to by the arch wiki page on DSDT.
    I followed the instructions but no matter what this has generated errors during the kernel compilation, sometimes due to every line containing unexpected \231 (or other numbers) characters, sometimes finding some error in the DSDT file and then claiming that the driver it was compiling (ol.c somewhere in the drivers/acpi section I believe) had references to undefined functions all over the place. I CANNOT compile with a custom DSDT specified.
    [2]
    Place recompiled DSDT in /lib/initcpio/custom.dsdt and add 'dsdt' to the HOOKS in mkinitcpio (and rebuild the initramfs-linux-*.img, of course). Another version of this included recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_STANDALONE disabled.
    In neither of these situations has the running DSDT ever been anything but the BIOS-supplied one and not once has the battery shown any different behavior.
    acpitool and $ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info have consistently claimed the information specified in the BIOS-supplied DSDT; the battery is non-rechargeable and is discharging at an unknown rate. Sometimes acpi will even report that the battery has zero capacity.
    The arch wiki does say mkinitcpio doesn't support the dsdt hook as of 2.6.30, but [1] didn't work either and mkinitcpio -H dsdt still told me to try this so I did.
    [3]
    The final solution I have tried has been to do [2] but to recompile the kernel with the legacy support for battery and ac adapter stuff disabled. I tried this because it was suggested in the kernel.log;
    Sep  13 11:51:03 localhost kernel: [   11.740059] ACPI: Deprecated procfs I/F for AC is loaded, please retry with CONFIG_ACPI_PROCFS_POWER cleared
    Sep  13 11:51:03 localhost kernel: [   11.753434] ACPI: AC Adapter [ADP1] (on-line)
    The corresponding line now reads
    ACPI: AC Adapter [ADP1] (on-line)
    (The same goes for the battery BAT0)
    but all this does is remove the battery/ and adp1/ folders from /proc/acpi/ and break acpitool functionality. The log still doesn't mention the dsdt hook, either.
    [4]
    The old way to do this was to use the acpi-dsdt-initrd-patch-* patch, but that hasn't been updated for modern kernels, presumably because of the new "functionality" from mkiniticpio. The current kernel .config doesn't include any options for ACPI initrd/initramfs support or reading a DSDT from initramfs, which is the functionality provided by this patch.
    This covers all the methods I've been able to find on the internet and I'm at a loss for what to do. Am I doing something wrong in [1]? Under what conditions will the compiler fail/succeed with a CONFIG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_FILE?
    When I recompile I fix the 'Zero' definition and a couple compiler errors and warnings. The errors come from section length definitions, which read as 0x00000000 rather than the appropriate max-min value so I fix those, and the warnings come from _T_* methods belonging to the compiler, so I refactor the code to remove the initial underscores. The last warning comes from an isolated And statement that's within brackets (compiler complains it doesn't do anything), but if I remove that the compiler fails hard.
    Thanks to anyone who's read this far.  Please let me know if you have any ideas how to get my system to use a customized DSDT.

    Thanks for the offer, Radioactive man However, I'm actually compiling a customized kernel with the linux-ck and -sony patches, so your packages won't help. (The custom kernel works fine and I've tested this battery behavior on the the regular, -ck, and -sony kernels as well)
    Anyway, so I tried another compile with
    CONFIG_PREVENT_FIRMWARE_BUILD=n in addition to the options listed in [1] and that time it compiled.
    Unfortunately it still didn't load the DSDT!
    I did catch a quick little error message that turned up in kernel.log though;
    /var/log/kernel.log:Sep 15 11:50:24 localhost kernel: [    0.925780] acerhdf: unknown (unsupported) BIOS version Sony Corporation/VGN-FZ4000E/R2110J7, please report, aborting!
    acerhdf is a fan controller module for the Aspire One, and perhaps I left that in the kernel config and it's preventing the custom DSDT from loading, even though the acerhdf module never gets loaded itself, nor is it in my rc.conf or anything else... If that was the cause of all this, I'm gonna be angry...
    Anyway, this message does not appear with my latest kernel build because I took off the custom DSDT option, hoping to be able to use ACPI_CUSTOM_METHOD=y, which supposedly allows one to inject a custom AML method into a debug fs. It wouldn't have worked anyway, as it doesn't let you modify Device sections, but even with a dummy method insertion it didn't give my root modification privileges as it was supposed to...
    Will try recompiling AGAIN with this CONFIG_ACERHDF=n (it's simply 'not set' in my current .config), while also enabling the custom kernel etc. If this doesn't work I have no idea what I'll do.
    Anyway, thanks for your help and time:

  • Hi, I just got an Apple Thunderbolt Display. How can I connect it to my sony vaio pc? Thanks

    Hi, I just got an Apple Thunderbolt Display. How can I connect it to my sony vaio pc? At Apple Store they gave me a Mini Display Port to VGA Adapter, but monitor doesnt display any image. Thanks for your help!

    no, your computer needs to have thunderbolt technology. does it?
    if not, no adapter can make a thunderbolt display work on a non-thunderbolt computer.
    someone was likely confused since miniDP will FIT into a TB socket but is only compatible one way, ie a mDP display can work on a TB machine, but a TB display cannot work on a mDP machine

  • How do i download my itunes to my new sony vaio. My original laptop no longer works so am unable to switch it on which is where my original itunes account was setup. i have downloaded my itunes to my iphone and ipad with no problem

    Why wont me itunes downlaod to my new sony vaio?
    i follow all of the steps and have managed to get my itunes onto my ipad  and iphone but for some reason nothing appears on the vaio. My original laptop is broken and will no longer switch on which is where my account was originally set up. I dont really understand icloud. i thought everything was stored there so dont understand why this is happening Can anyone help please?

    What exactly is the problem that you are having ? Is it with downloading the iTunes program itself, or redownloading your purchases ?
    If iTunes itself then you can download it from here : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    If it doesn't download then have you tried a different browser, and/or tried changing the settings on the browser that you are using e.g. turn off 'pop-up blocker' ?
    If you've installed iTunes and want to download your past purchases, then what you can redownload depends upon what country that you are in, and whether the items are still in your country's store. What you can redownload will show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage :
    But ideally you'd have your own backup copy of all your downloads/library (and not relying on redownloading), a song/album etc could be removed from the store at any time.
    If you will be syncing your iPad and iPhone to that computer then you may also find this page useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • Vaio E series - Cooling Fan noise

    Hello, 2 weeks ago I bought Vaio E series.  I was very excited that I will have Vaio laptop. It was like my dream wish. According to our standard, we are poor country and the Vaio laptops are extremely expensive. But, Vaio laptops are know for high quallity laptops and great support from Sony. So, I bought it. I am very satisfied with the quality. But I have one problem. The cooling fan is making a lot of noise even the CPU usage its 10 %. I have the latest BIOS version. So, Sony I am expecting from you to release a new BIOS update fixing this issue.. I dont want to start thinking that I pay a lot of money only for the name. With that money I could buy a more powerful machine but I put my trust in Sony. The model number is Model # SVE17122CXB. PS. Don't say that I should go to service center because they can do nothing. I am an IT student and I know how this stuff works. And I dont  want the fact that the new laptop will be repaired. So the only solution is BIOS update. Sony, do not make me regret that I have chosen you before other brands.
    I am expecting a positive feedback.

    t0n1,
    Engineering came back saying that fan speed control is not supported on the SVE17 hardware so there is no way on this model to control the fan speed manually.  I apologize for suggesting this initially, at the time I did not have your exact model at my desk but instead I had a very similar one (SVE14A)
    I also received two SVE17 notebooks and both have extremely quiet fan (especially if CPU usage is very low).  Loud fan noise is not a characteristic of this model.
    If you feel that the fan on your SVE17 is abnormally loud, then you have two options at this point:
    1) You can make a audio/video recording of this fan noise and post it for me to review; after that i can try to give you more suggestions or let you know if this is in fact normal or not.  At this time you do not mention that your computer is shutting off, so the unit is not overheating.
    2) Or you can consider service.  (I realize you initially refused service in your original post, but sometimes some new thermal sheets or re-seating of the heat-sink can address these issues.

  • ITunes deletes Library File on startup (Sony VAIO, Windows 7)

    Help needed. My mother has a 1 yr VAIO with Windows 7 and has a consistent problem with iTunes in that the Library file keeps disappearing and hence iTunes shows no music / TV files available to play.
    Scenario is:
    Latest iTunes version installed.
    Music / TV files are on C drive
    Library build happens correctly first time.
    Shut down iTunes
    Re-launch iTunes
    When the program re-launches it places Library file in the 'Waste bin' and creates new temp files in the location (itunes.tmp). It also sometimes creates a new library file which is empty.
    These temp files seem to be created on every launch and shut down. I deleted over 500 of them! At present the only solution seems to be to rebuild the file every time.
    I never had this on any real issues on other Windows XP machines or my Mac. Have tried re-install. Can't think of any other options.
    thanks.

    There is a problem with media management software Vaio xml library Manager, the Vaio content manager and the Vaio Music Box software
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8537277#8537277
    Work around:
    In Control Panel, turn off Vaio Content Folder Watcher and VAIO Content Metadata Intelligent Analyzing Manager.

    Sony has issued upgrades for some models, check you Sony download site to see if there is one available.

  • NVIDIA brightness and suspend issues on VAIO

    Hello,
    I have problems with NVIDIA driver (assuming) and I searched similar topics on forum but still couldn't solved. I'm on ARCH 3.1.5 Xfce, installed nvidia-290 proprietary driver and nvidiabl from AUR. No swap partition and using lightdm. Laptop model is VAIO VPCF132FX, resolution at 1600x900.
    blank screen when switching to tty1 - tty6 but I can run commands in virtual consoles (tried log in and reboot from tty1 not seeing just typed). I added vga=xxx in grub kernel line and it's changing resolution while booting but switch to ttys still gives blank screen. I think it's happening after started X. If I doesn't start Xfce I can switch.
    can't resume from suspend. I think it suspends successfully and when try to back it freezes, no inputs from keyboard (tried some shorcuts, numlock, password etc) and blank screen. After few seconds fan reaches at it's loudest and I ended up with 5sec turn off. Is it hardware related issue or kernel (or X lightdm Xfce). Should I use laptop-mode-tools to get suspend work or missing something?
    if I added
    Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
    to "Device" section in xorg.conf, keyboard shortcut of brightness and brightness-applet are working. It has 8 level of brightness and only top 3 of them works properly, if it gets lower from there screen blinks few seconds and back to highest brightness. I removed that line from xorg.conf, installed nvidiabl it works great except keyboard shortcut and brightness applet. How do I get shortcut and applet work on Xfce with nvidiabl? Also shortcut is working when numlock is off, is there any chance to work either numlock on or off?

    Hi Dave, see if this might be of use...
    Go to System Preferences > Universal Access and down in the Display: section make sure that the Enhance contrast: slider is all the way to left to Normal, or more to the right for less Contrast.
