FCE crashes during capturing/clips offline

I have a situation where i think FCE is crashing when i capture a specific part of footage. I tried twice and it froze when it got to the same exact point each time. However it did allow me to hit esc to stop the capturing process but then nothing happened after that. Would it be easier to capture only the footage i need as opposed to the entire tape?
Also, i encountered the 'clips are offline' error. How do i correct this?

Could this be the same problem encountered by people using FCE 3.0 and earlier who updated to OSX 10.4.9 recently ?
Try this:-
1. Open System Preferences and then Spotlight.
2. Select the Spotlight "Privacy" folder and drag your Capture Scratch file into it. (You haven't really moved your Capture Scratch folder, you have simply stopped Spotlight from messing with it).
Then try capturing again.

Crashing during capture

Lately I've been having trouble capturing HDV video from my Canon HV30....FCE keeps crashing during capture. This problem has just recently started, even though I haven't changed any settings or done anything differently from the past. I'm using a 2x2.8 quad core Mac Pro, 8GB ram, OS10.6.2, FCE 4.01 and I'm capturing to a dedicated Western Digital scratch drive (640 gb, about 200 gb free). I'm capturing via Firewire, and I don't have any other firewire devices attached during capture. Any ideas why FCE has suddenly started crashing, and any ideas for troubleshooting? Thanks.

I have had the same problems attempting to capture from a Canon HV40: whether I shoot at 60i or 30P, the result is the same: Capture will open a window without any playback controls and start to play the footage (that is, it starts the camera playing) but if (a) I stop playback from the camera, or (b) the shot ends and the tape is now blank, or (c) I press ESC to end the capture as per the instruction at the bottom of the capture screen, in all instances FCE 4.01 crashes. And when i restart it, there is NO list of shots captured, nothing. But if I go into the scratch disc, they are there. I cannot get these files to open in QT, either!

File manager crash during capture

Using the latest version, I am getting consistent crash during capture of the file manager. Using an IBM T61P that has a 7200rpm drive. If I do frequent saves during capture I don't loose the work before the next crash. I hope I don't have to use an external drive to make this problem go away.
Any ideas out there?

Dennis already said it, but a single disk is not enough. Minimum requirements are a DEDICATED 7200 RPM (e)SATA disk for capturing. Add to that the fact that your system is dead slow (at least 50 times slower than a fast system) and that one should not do anything else during capturing, and that the system may not be tuned at all for editing and disaster is waiting to strike.
Have a look here: Adobe Forums: Guide for installing and tuning a Vista... which also applies to Win7, for a band-aid. It will not solve the issue of an extremely slow CPU, possibly integrated Intel graphics, which should be avoided at all times, shared memory, which is another no-go and the lacking disk setup.

FCE crashes during Quicktime Export

FCE consistently crashes when exporting clip as Quicktime Movie. I am new to FCE.
When performing this Workflow (below), if I do NOT add the Zoom keyframes the clip exports fine.
This is the Workflow that causes the consistent crash of FCE.
Workflow
1. Set up as DV-NTSC
2. Import DV clip
3. double click clip in browser to add to Viewer
4. Click motion tab on Viewer
5. Add two KeyFrames
6. Set first Keyframe to 100% Zoom - set second Keyframe to 300% Zoom
7. Scrub Zoom profile in Viewer - looks fine
8, Drag dv clip from Viewer to Canvas
9. Scrub clip in timeline - looks good - zooms correctly
10. Select clip in timeline & select Sequence > "Render All" (it only comments on the audio)
11. File > Export > Quicktime Movie (self Contained or not - still crashes)
12. FCE crashes every time
I've added all Updates (though I cannot find an update for 3.5.1)
I've used StreamClip to alter the compression settings of the dv clip - no success.
I've deleted prefs & User Data folder.
Is there something more that I should be doing prior to attempting to export?

Crash during capture with Kona

I have an odd problem with video capture. During the capture, if I click onto another app or even just the Finder, Final Cut crashes. It actually looks perfectly fine: video continues to be displayed in the capture screen and disk activity continues. However, FCP doesn't come back to being the front application and I have to force quit it.
If I don't click on another app during capture, everthing is fine.
Yeah, yeah: if it hurts, don't do it, right? However, I don't think FCP should crash just because I've switched into another app (particularly when it's just the Finder & no other "real" app is running). I just added a Kona LHe card and I think this crash has started since then.
Details:
* Quad G5
* Kona LHe
* OS X 10.4.6
* FCP 5.1.1
* external SATA array
* latest Aja drivers
Has anyone else seen this?

I finally got around to calling AJA on this. They said it's to be expected. I should have realized but the problem is caused by the switching of control of the Kona card. There's a whole bunch of information about this in the Kona manual and it sounds insanely complicated, so now that I think about it, it's no surprise that switching during a capture might be bad.
AJA tech support (Rudi, I think) was, as always, fantastic. I love that company.

Fcp6 + XL-H1 + basic firewire = crash during capture ?

I'm trying to capture 1080i50 footage and fcp has crashed a few times during capture.
Anybody else having this problems?
Any workarounds?
Trashing prefs? Anything else?
Or are 10.5 + fcp6 + XL-H1 just incompatible to each other?

Sounds like a similar problem as mine .. it captures just fine with basic NTSC. but crashes with any HDV setup .. I'm using Sony FX1 .. I went so far as to reformat my macpro' .. tried to install Tiger, but it wouldn't allow it. Apparently it is not compatible with the new Intel processor's. Tried capture without any updates .. still crashed.

Crashed during conform clip, now won't open compound clips!

I have a project where I went inside a compound clip to conform the clip speed (it was previously retimed but shouldn't have been).
At this point FCP X crashed. After restarting now I cannot open any compound clips in a timeline.
This is deadly. I assume the project file got broken during the crash somehow.
Is there any kind of autosave vault so I can rescue a previous version before it crashed?

Create a new project. Drag the compound clip in question into it from your event browser. Break the compound apart and you should be ok. This will incur crashes at each step, but if you're patient you'll get it back.
Did you start this project in 10.0.7 and update the project a few weeks back? Sometimes little quirks like this happen when you update when you're in the middle of a project. It's no consolation, I know, but I think that is where it's coming from.

FCE Crashes during Mixdown Audio

Hello!
I'm a relatively new Mac user having serious issues with FCE 1.0.1. I've done a few projects in it already, but it seems like every time I start a new one it gets more and more contrary. I'm running it on a 1.66GH Intel Core Duo Mini with 512 Megs of RAM.
Basically, I'm importing my .dv files that I captured in iMovie HD and when I use sequence> mixdown audio it will just spontaneously shut down the program, usually when it gets to about 95%, but once it allowed me to save the project before shutting down, and that time it dropped all but seven minutes of audio out of 45 minutes of footage.
I've also tried "render all" and "render start to end", but those options did the same thing. It doesn't even give me any error messages. It just quits without warning.
I would really appreciate any guidance that anyone can offer me on this because I'm at a total loss. It's driving me completely insane . . . PLEASE HELP!!

Problem #1: You're running a non-universal application on an Intel Mac. upgrade to the newest version
Problem #2: Final Cut & iMovie deal with video in completely different ways. Don't use iMovie. Log & Capture in FCE.
Fix those two things. Report back and let us know if you're still having Mixdown Audio issues. I'm guessing you won't.

FCE skipping during capture?

I'm running the newest version of Final Cut Express, and my OS is Leopard.
I've captured my movie (from my canon camcorder) and when i put it in my movie or preview it it skips!!!! The Camcorder is kinda old but it still works. Does anyone have an answer or a tip for my problem? Any comments welcome. Thanks

Okay I've figured out what the prob was...
Make sure you have the right camera settings AND make sure your HD if fast enough. I had selected my Scratch disk as and external HD and it was just NOT working. I switched it back the the Internal and it works now.

FCE crashes when attempting capture

Can anyone help me? I have no communication. I use FCE 2.0.3 and a firewire directly to a Canon Optura 10. It has worked well for 2 years, capturing great, now after installing OS 10.4.6 the camera is not recognized. I've trashed preferences, trashed Quicktime pref and installed the latest Quicktime. Still no change. The capture window will not even open, in fact FCE crashes when "capture" is attempted. In addition the view video is stuck on "real time," grayed out not allowing "firewire." What else can I try?

You say you have trashed the preferences but have you trashed ALL of them as detailed in this article:-

Have you checked that iMovie can capture just to verify that your FireWire connections are not defective - also disconnect and reconnect all the cables.

FCP crashes when i take clips offline

Using FCP 5.1.2 and AfterEffects 6
At first it would happen when i was trying to replace a clip created in AfterEffects. i'd need to make an adjustment or whatever and rather than making a new clip, i named it the same as the clip already online in FCP and told AfterEffects to replace it. When i tab back to FCP, i'd get the spinning beachball of death and FCP would stop responding.
Deciding to change my tactics, i decided i would take the clip offline in FCP FIRST and avoid the whole missing media thing. Well, when i asked FCP to take the clip offline (deleting of the disk), it got stuck in the making a video preview loop, with the bar at 100%, but never stopping. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong here (or at least the main thing i'm doing wrong)?

I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).
The workaround is to download Quicktime manually, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:
1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).
2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.
3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.
4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.

No sound captured during Capture Now

First time in many moons using FCP. I'm capturing from a mini DV (Canon Eulura 70) using the Capture Now function. The problem is that it appears that no sound is being captured. I've read other posts about not hearing sound during capture... at the moment I'm using headphones connected to the camera and the sound is fine. I'd prefer to use the computer to monitor the sound but I cannot locate a checkbox anywhere to turn this feature on.
When I drop the captured clips onto the canvas no corresponding audio file appears in the timeline, and no audio plays during playback. I've checked the clip setting in log/capture and it's set to capture both video and audio. I've checked System Settings, and under Scratch disks it's set to capture video and audio separately. Audio playback in FCP is set to built-in audio. Sound is working fine in all other applications.
I've tried trashing the preference files but no effect. Also I tried to just capture audio, and as soon as I hit esc, FCP crashes... this is totally repeatable. I also noticed that on the clip setting tab there is a section with a bunch of sliders (7 in all)... don't know what they do, but they are all greyed out.
Camera works fine in iMovie...

There are no check boxes on that tab, only a pull down list entitled "Capture". The choices are Video and Audio, Video only, Audio only. I have it set to Video and Audio. Perhaps there are checkboxes in another version?

FCE crashes after validating audio data

I have just started using FCE and I'm having a problem with it craahing. I am capturing from a DV tape that was recorded in 12bit audio. I got the audio synch warning message a few times and, after reading the manual, realized that I needed to change the NTSC setting in Easy Setup to NTSC 32kHz for 12 bit audio, which I did.
I used the Capture Now button and pressd the Esc key to stop the capture. If the clip I capture is several minutes long I get a small window titled "Analyzing DV Audio" and the text in the window says "Validating Audio Data". This window remains in view for a minute or more and then FCE crashes. I have tried this several times and get the same result. I tried repairing permissions and rebooting and still it crashes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion. I trashed all the prefs and tried capturing the same footage again and experienced another crash. I then moved to another section of the tape and tried again and it worked without crashing. I also captured footage from another tape without a problem. I suspect that particular section of tape is somehow corrupted and was causing the crash. I was able to take this section of tape into iMovie without a problem. I guess I'll bring it into FCE from iMovie.

Premiere Pro is crashing (spinning pinwheel forever... go for lunch...45-60min, come back, force quite, "PPro has encountered a serious error") during simple tasks such as "nudging" a clip in the timeline or clicking with the "razor" tool. This is destroying my productivity, any help appreciated. This is hapening on 2 different machines linking to the same set of media. Full system details below.
All Media is ProRes422(LT) stored on a AFP share drive. Both systems are setup with media cache files on the local drive, Murcury Playback Engine (CUDA).
System 1:
System is running a fresh install of OS X 10.9.2 (as of Monday)

Project files contain approx 13,000 assets and take upwards of 8 min to load all media.

Hi Scott. The reason I made those suggestions was because I had the same problem once. Nudging certain clips or moving audio keyframes resulted in an instant repeatable crash. This was because I imported the XML with audio automation from an FCP7 project. Stripping the audio keyframes cleared up the crashing issue. I just had to remix the whole short film. And Adobe also volunteered that they were seeing the same problems with stabilzation data.
I haven't seen much corruption on ProRes. My experience has mostly been with JPEGs and Long-GOP video.
I haven't done much cutting off a network; mostly just transcoding or exporting. But, no crashing ensued. However, you could rule that out by copying some of your footage locally, and see if you get the same crashing.
Before Corrupt Clip Finder, I had a "search and destroy" method for finding clip corruption. This goes back to my Avid days. The routine in the same: start isolating or taking half your media off line, and see if it still crashes. Keep taking footage off until the crashing stops. That tells you the corruption was in the last batch you took offline.
You can use the "Make Offline" feature in Pr without having to physically move anything. So, another thing you could try is to take all your media off line, and see if you get crashes by nudging clips. If so, that would implicate the project, and not the media.
