FCE or Academic Studio?

Hi
I bought Final Cut Express a few months ago. I've since signed up for some college classes and find I'm eligible to purchase the "Academic" version of Final Cut Studio 5.1 for $700 (as opposed to the normal $2000 or whatever it is). That's seems like such a good deal that I would probably go ahead and purchase it despite having shelled out for FCE, but I've just heard that the Academic version can't be upgraded when FCS 6, 7, etc. come down the pipe -- you're more or less just stuck with 5.1 in perpetuity. Is that still such a good deal that I should take advantage of it while I can? It seems like a strong program that perhaps I shouldn't be too concerned over the inability to upgrade. Or perhaps it isn't worth it. Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
Richard

I bought Academic FCP HD 4. It kind of ***** that you can't upgrade, but then again you get a full version of FCP, Motion, and all that other good stuff for a very low price. Just because they come out with a new version of FCP doesn't mean the one you have is any less valuable. I could never have afforded the full version, so I got the opportunity to learn FCP for 500$. Bottom line, I don't regret my purchase. Hope that helps.

  • Exporting from FCE for DVD Studio Pro

I'm wondering what the best way is to export a video (approx 90 mins) from Final Cut Express HD to use to make playable DVDs using DVD Studio Pro on a different computer. Dual-layer DVDs are an option if there's no way to do this under 4.7 GB, but I'm interested in all my options. Thanks!

What about an external hard drive to save your exported self contained movie?
Switch the drive to computer with DVDSP.

  • Academic vs. Retail versions of FCP Express

Can anyone tell me the differences between the Academic version of FCP Express, and the full function version from retail? I work at a university with Final Cut Studio, and was considering FCP Express for home use.

Functionally Final Cut Express retail and academic packages are identical.
The differences are in the licensing. With the Academic Version you cannot:
1 - upgrade to a new version (say, from FCE4 to a future FCE5) by purchasing a reduced-price Upgrade Package - you would have to purchase a whole new Academic Version
2 - use the software for any commercial purpose
But if your question is also the difference between Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Express, the Studio version has more capabiities (Color, Motion, etc). If you are planning to use FCS and FCE together, keep in mind that you can move an FCE Project to Studio but you cannot do the reverse.

  • Upgrading from FCE to FCP

Is there any way to upgrade from FCE to FC studio or do I have to buy the whole studio suite?
Im running Final Cut Express 2 btw.

    Hi
No as Ian R. Brown writes there are non. But sell Your FCE then You get something.
    Why FCP ?
There are most probably many individual reasons. Mine was
    • Ability to share a project with others haveing FCP
    • The Multi Camera editing is avesome - but only if You got more than one Camera recordings.
    • Color corrector - three ways with - white, black and mid tone drop tools
    I really like this one.
Then there are so much more in the bundle
    • DVD Studio Pro WITH HD
    • Motion
    • Color
    • Soundtravk Pro
    • Compressor
So much new to learn - AND STILL SO Familiar miljoe.

  • Studio 2 and choosing a new macbook pro-Moderators? Apple Advisors?

    Hi all,
Just wondering how much of a performance difference there would be using FC Studio 2 with the 15 inch 2.2GHz 128MB Video card MacBook Pro as opposed to the 15 inch 2.4GHz 256MB Video Card model. I realize the is a slight difference in processor speed, but I've read that Motion is a videoRAM hungry monster. I'd like to get adequate performance from the machine, but the $500 price difference between the two models would pay for a big chunk of my upgrade from FCE to FC Studio 2 if the 15" 2.2 would do for me. I mostly do independent video editing for local wedding videographers and motion graphics for a couple local studios and would like to be able to offer the higher end graphics without the outrageous render times with Live Type, FCE and Adobe AE on my current dual G4. Just tying to get an idea of my final cost so I can budget for it and make the most of those dollars.

  • Another academic of full commercial?

So two years ago I bought the Academic Studio 1 not knowing that it wasn't upgradable. Now I'm in a jam as far as what I should do to go to Studio 2. I got the SN from a friend of mine who used to be an editor but is now a teacher, so I was going to get the $700 Full commercial upgrade, but I stopped by my college campus Apple Store and looked at what they had as far as Studio 2 went. They obviously only have the academic version, but for only $150!! I'm only a sophomore, so I've still got some time before going totally commercial and leaving education behind, so do you think I should go for the $150 Education or the $700 Commercial? The only qualm that's keeping me from going out right now and getting the Education Studio is the "upgrade from any FCP version to Studio 2" offer. If when studio 3 comes out in most likely 2009 and they don't have that same upgrade from FCP offer, I'm then going to need to plop down the full $1300 or whatever it will be at that time instead of just the $700. Another possible point of contention is that my friend's dad mentioned in passing something about getting his copy from someone else, and while that was many years ago, I want to make sure I'm fully legit here and not illegally using someone else's old SN to obtain an upgrade.
What's you all's professional opinions on what I should get?
    Thanks,
    -Brian

That serial number your buddy gave you, if you don't have the original full-feautre disks, it's not your software! All you have right now is a stolen serial number. Get the academic for now and plop down $1300 or whatever for the full version when you can afford it.

  • What imac for me? Recommendations please!!!

I am thinking of getting one of the new imac i7 3.4GHz. I am using FCE and Logic Studio with tons of plugins like BFD2 and Amplitube etc. Will these new machines handle the programs properly unlike my current 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo with 3 GB RAM. And if so then any ideas what kind of memory I need to have with that?
    Appreciate any help...
    Mogger.

The new Mac's will handle those programs and plugins with ease.  I would recommend that you double the RAM to 8GB, at the minimum.

  • Camcorder Help Please

Over the past few months I have graduated from Windows Movie Maker, to FCE to FCP Studio 2. As an edge of desk job I make DVDs for my employer. These have gone down so well that he paid for me to upgrade to FCP. Adding a bit of basic Motion etc to the DVDs has convinced him to pay to upgrade my camcorder. I currently use a Panasonic NV-GS75.
I have been given a budget of £1000 ($1800). I've search the forums and read the threads but am no wiser! Should I move to HDV? Any suggestions gratefully received.

  • Final Cut Express v3.5 HD - Setup/Config. Tips

    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for some assistance regarding the setup of Final Cut Express HD v3.5. on my system I have downloaded the Apple "on-line" FCE documentation, but I thought I would try gaining some "real-life" insight about installing and cofiguring FCE from this discussion board, as I'm new to Final Cut Express. I have used other NLEs (Pinnacle, Avid, etc.) so I'm familiar with a few editors, in general.
My system is: iMac 2.8 Ghz Extreme with 4GB memory and a 500GB internal disk. I have (1) LaCie 250GB External drive via 1394 Firewire (my video ingest drive) and (1) Western Digital 500GB USB External Disk used for content (video, images, graphics, Digital Juice, etc.). Lastly, I have an old MovieBox Deluxe (Video Capture/Convertor) via 1394 port. I doubt it will work with the iMac, as it is proprietary Avid/Pinnacle hardware.
I was going to use my 500GB external drive as my "scratch" drive and leave everything else alone for now. The iMac will be a standalone video editing system...no other software loaded on it, except what comes loaded as the standard (OS X 10.4.10, iLife, Safari, etc.)
My hope is to leave the internal drive (loaded with FCE) alone. Should I save my FCE projects to the internal drive? or save to an external?
Is this how I should setup the drives, etc.? Or do something different?
I really appreciate your advice and help, as I'm a "newby" to the discussions boards. I finally got tired of doing everything with a WinTel box. I saw the light!
    Thanks for your assistance!

    Hi Everyone!
Regarding setup and config of FCE, I've been reading several discussions about scratch drives. While I plan to use one of my external drives as the scratch drive and the other as my video ingest drive, should I SAVE my projects to the internal 300GB drive which FCE resides? or should I SAVE projects to a different drive?
I'm trying my best to setup my iMac so FCE and the drive it resides on is the LEAST disturbed (with other content or files) to prevent fragmentation. So my media content (i.e. Digital Juice) is on a seperate drive, video ingest, yet, on another seperate drive, etc., etc. Without beating the horse, what is the BEST way to setup my iMac? I guess I've been reading too many horror-stories about scratch drives, conflicts, etc.
After reading several messges, I notice many discussions about still photo images (with/without transitions) becoming "jittery" upon render completion in FCE and FCP/Studio? Are still images a problem for FCE 3.5? or are these sporadic, based on a mac users configuration and what is being accomplished?
Lastly, what are the necessary utilities (convertors, etc.) to purchase in support of editing with FCE? I see lots of utilities recommended for various things and I want to make sure I get the best utilities.
    Thanks!

  • HD video to MPEG2, poor results

I have a some 1080i PAL material I need to make DVD's from. Gave it the best settings in Compressor and the result is dire, blockiness, jagged edges and banding. Compared to the pristine HD it is awful. The problem is I have seen PAL SD results from HD material that is 10x better quality. What am I doing wrong? Should I be using Squeeze 6 for best results? I did make some changes to 'frame controls' but the encode went out to 80 hours for a 30 minute episode....!!!

Klaus - you are absolutely about locking audio at the playhead - i learned that lesson several years ago and I always do that. It is a must.
I am quite sure that I am not using DRM protected tunes. But, that is a possibility.
My feelings is that the synchronization problem is linked to the number of clip modifications, as well as the number of sound modifictions. I usually discard about 40% of my original video. This means that just about every clip has one or more cut. In addition, I usually import a large number of pictures from Iphoto, and do several clip transitions. My videos are travel reports, and I also add text to many of the clips. I add even more to the system overload by keeping some original sounds. This means that whenever I switch from one sound to another I do a manual sound transition by lowering the volume of both the ending sound and also that of the new starting sound (this causes more splitting and locking at playhead).
I have noticed that Imovies with few changes have few synchronization problems, and that Imovies with many changes start to become unmanageable at around one hour of playtime. I suppose that I should be using FCE and IDVD studio pro. I do have both and have never used them. I only edit movies every few months and found it too hard to understand and remember the intricacies of these advanced program.
The only reason for my original post was share my experience in converting HD to DV. But, thanks for your interest and support.

  • HD video to DV  IDVD - feeback

for anyone interested, I have just completed my first HD to DV conversion. Here are the results:
    G5 1.8 Ghz, OSX 10.3.9, 2GB of Ram
    Imovie HD 5.0.2
    IDVD 5.01
    Imovie lenght 58 minutes
    Imovie file size 50 GB
    IDVD file size 1.9GB
IDVD processing time 15 hours and 45 minutes (WOW!! - i was worried that the system would automatically shut itself down - It did not and all is well)
Comments : Everything worked pretty much as it does with the normal DV format. Problems with hesitations, stop/start motion started when I erased the original soundtrack and replaced it with music from Itunes (just as it does on long DV Imovies). But, everything worked just fine on finished DVD.
I did find that dragging an Itune causes more synchronizing problems than selecting the option "apply at playhead".
I wish Apple would fix this problem. My Imovies usually last close to two hours, and my DVDs will accept 4.7GB of data. But, because of this problem I end up making two half full DVDS.

  • Final Cut Express HD and OS Mavericks

I've upgraded to OS Mavericks, now allmost everytime i put in a clip in the timeline Final Cut Express crashes. I don't want to give this program up yet.
    Is there a solution ?

the App Store app would replace an older trial version of Aperture with the current regular releas
That's because when Apple announced that iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand & iWork are now free, they silently included Aperture.  If you already have any of them installed (including  unlicensed trial versions) then under Mavericks the AppStore updates them to the current release.  This was intentional and made easy by the facts that they are all currently supported releases and available in the AppStore.
The situation with Final Cut Express is different.  FCE was never available in the AppStore to begin with.  It was end-of-lifed back in in June 2011.  Apple only ever offered upgrades from one version of FCE to the next.  To my knowledge, they never offered upgrades from FCE to the former Final Cut Pro/Studio.  Their approach with Final Cut Studio was similar - upgrades only from one version to another.  There have never been any upgrades offered from FCE or FCP/Studio to FCP-X.  In this case Apple is following its longstanding approach to selling the Final Cut family of products.

  • Poor image quality -slideshow iDVD-need help asap

    Hello
does anybody know how to create a better quality slideshow???? It sim,ply does look totally unprofessional .. when the dvd is burned.
We have supersharp images .. but once the DVD is burned and you pop it back in the unit .. the images look fuzzy .. and not as crisp as when you actually run them in iPhoto, or iDVD...
this is really urgent .. I'd appreciate if somebody give us a hint ... what to do .. or is there an alternative to created 100% quality slideshows on a dvd.
We need to play the burned DVD's on a computer (to show to clients) as well as on a TV .. in case the client wants to view the DVD at home.
    please respond to
    [email protected]
    Thank you!
I understand that it might look fuzzy on a TV screen .. but why does it look so bad on a computer screen? That is not a good way to present work/images .. please help!

Don't count on FCE or DVD Studio Pro to be better. I think your issue is with MPEG-2 compression.
I build my slideshows within iDVD, not iPhoto or iMovie HD. Here's an example:
    Ireland 2004 iDVD Project
Nearly 800 images dragged into iDVD as organized folders from the hard drive. Transitions on each image, and menus, sub-menus, and sub-sub menus. The sub-menus are created by clicking on the Folder icon on the iDVD interface.
Main Menu has 6 buttons: Downpatrick, Antrim Coast, Letterkenny, Sligo, Trim, and Extras. Behind each button are additional buttons ranging from 3 to 6 buttons. The Extras button goes fairly deep. When you click on Extras, it gives you 3 choices on a new menu. The "B&Bs" button opens a new menu with 5 buttons. The "Movies" button opens a new menu with 4 buttons. If you click on the "Irish Music" button, you open a new menu with 2 buttons. At that point, you are at a "sub-sub-sub menu."
Music was on 95% of the slideshows. Some movies converted to QT DV from Canon S400 digicam .AVI files (iDVD 4). Now convert to H.264 with QuickTime 7. Images are original 4MP (2MB) JPEG images from the same digicam. This DVD project is around 4GB with all pictures as DVD-ROM content.

  • What DVD authoring application do i use from FC Express???

    Greetings,
I am considering upgrading from iMovie HD to Final Cut Exp. HD. I am curious if when i purchase and use FCExpress to create and edit video, i still have to use iDVD 6 to author my final project to disk. Is there something included with FCE? perhaps a DVD studio express? any info is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

There is no DVD creation program packaged with FCE. iDVD (which you already have) works very nicely with it.
You can use Quicktime movies created in FCE in DVD Studio Pro but that is not a stand alone program, you have to buy FCP Studio .. which would kind of make buying FCE first, rather pointless
Your other option would be to use Roxio Toast to create your DVDs; another separate program but not terribly expensive. It also works nicely with FCE

  • How should I handle a file too large for DVD?

I've created a 2-1/2 video of a play in FCE HD, utilizing two video tracks and three audio tracks in various spots, as well as some text transitions. With the title screens and scene index in iDVD, the movie comes in at about 8.5GB unless I switch to "Best Quality," in which case it's still 4.9GB (and doesn't look nearly as good as it should). So:
    1. Is there way to end up with a more managable file size from FCE without losing quality?
    2. If not, what's the best way to export a single FCE file to two movies (Acts I and II) to burn onto two DVDs?
    Thanks

    1) One way you could export content longer than 2 hours to DVD would be to go the dual layer route .. but you need a dual layer burner, and dual layer media. iDVD6 will handle this
If you are limited to single layer, another option would be Compressor but that is not available with FCE, only DVD Studio Pro, part of the FCP Studio suite
You could go the route of Toast 7 with Popcorn, but you would not get the fancy iDVD menus, themes, etc.
Personally, I am not impressed with the quality of DVD content (single layer) over two hours by any method
    2) To split your project into two movies, create two new sequences and call them something like Part One and Part Two (gee, aren't I clever?) In you orginal sequence (Timeline) use In and Out points to define what the two parts will be ... so for Part One, set the In Point at the beginning of the timeline and find an appropriate point and hour or 90 minutes in and set an Out point.
Open the Part One Sequence (the new one) From the Browser, drag your original Sequence (My Movie, whatever you called it) into Part One. Only the In to Out will go. You may want to put a Cross Dissolve at the end to fade to black. Maybe create a Part One Ends title there. Render everything. Set your chapter Markers. Export it and create an iDVD project from that movie
Do the similar for Part Two
