FCP Freeze Frame for Menu Background

Forum,
I'm trying to use a freeze frame from FCP inside of DVDSP, but the image looks warped. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
Workflow:
Freeze Frame in FCP>Export Quicktime Movie>24p Pulldown Removal/Encoding for SD DVD (Best Quality) in Compressor>Import Asset into DVDSP>Warped image.
The Freeze Frame looks fine in FCP, but not in DVDSP.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Trey

Hey, I got it working. All I had to do was drag from my asset window to my canvas or whatever DVDSP calls it.
Don't ask me how I was putting on the canvas the first time - very new to DVDSP. Anyways, it's working now for some reason.
Oh, yeah thanks again for the Japan Loop. I haven't tried to use it yet but I'm going to try later tonight hopefully.

  • Why won't FCP X burn the menu background image when sharing directly to DVD?

At one point recently I was able to drop in a jpg file so that FCP X would display this image in the menu background when a disc is burned directly out of FCP X when sharing directly to DVD. It worked at first, and then I decided I needed a higher quality image, but this one won't burn. My DVD now just has a black menu background. I can't figure out why this is happening. Please help! I'm using a late 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz 15" with OS 10.8.4. FCP X is up to date as well. My harddrive is fairly full in case that might cause some errors. Are there any specs on what type and size an image FCP wants for this function? Thanks for any help!
    Gregg

Thank you, reducing the image size worked! I had used a low res file before, and with success decided to increase the resolution/size, and then it didn't work. the image did appear in small preview in the export panel, but wouldn't burn when all was said and done. the dimensions you gave worked fine. unfortunately, it makes the image a little bit fuzzy, but i dont think i can do anything about this. at least it burned it in there. thanks!

  • Build to Flash - won't support video for menu backgrounds?

I spent hours on a project that includes After Effects motion menu components included as a video background with a loop point. What looks great in preview and on DVD apparently falls a part in Flash. Flash doesn't show the video background in the main menu. Also - it sure would be nice if Encore included a "preload" progress bar for progressive downloads.
Anyone an expert with using Encore to build to Flash?  Are there any other do's and don't I should know about?

    Thanks for your response...
I can wait.  After all, it was by waiting for the release of the 10h version after the 10e version sabotaged my flash installation, that I was eventually able to at least get Firefox up and running flash again...
It's just frustrating to think that the folks at Adobe can't come up with a better product testing cycle so they are unleashing these problems on end users systems...
I recognize that there may be some sort of issue with my particular system registry.  If so, I wish I knew what it was...but flash releases are the only installations I ever have any difficulty with...All of the other software I run updates without failing....sad to say...
Perhaps I will try running a home edition version of secedit (See here)http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222 instead of the clean or repair install...I'll let you know what I decide and how it works out...
    Anyway, thanks for the input..

  • Imovie 11 freeze frame for picture in picture

Is it possible to capture a still image from a video clip and insert it as a picture in picture on a video clip.
Getting the still frame is straightforward. After its created in the main flow of video I tried dragging it over another clip for PIP but it appears that won't work.
In Previousl versions of iMovie it appears that there was a menu option to reveal a still frame in the finder but that option appears to have been removed for iMovie 11.
Is there a way to get a still frame into PIP preferably inside of iMovie 11.
    Thanks.

See this post for instructions for how to get a still frame. Once you have it, it is easy to use it as a PIP.

  • Unwanted freeze frames at end of clips

Hi! I use iMovie 08 v 7.1.1 (529). My project is in 16:9 format and the video I use is 1280x720px .avi files (mjpeg codec) taken with a Canon TX1 camera and imported into iPhoto's library.
I have done about ten small projects in iMovie now, some are just clips strung together with cross disolve and/or ripple transitions between them. Other projects also have a background audio track extracted from long clips.
Lately, for no apparent reason, the video in some clips in my projects freezes about 0.5 to one second before the end of the clip. The transition to the next clip goes ahead with the unwanted freeze frame, and the background audio keeps playing - thereby going out of sync. This problem is apparent both when previewing the project in iMovie before it is exported, and also in the exported videos. (I have exported using Quicktime and .mp4 format - both as .h264 and MPEG4 Improved.) The first time I noticed the problem was when I was exporting a project at 10000kbps video (which probably was a bit higher than needed). Now the problem happens all the time, regardless of bitrate.
The strange thing is, these projects exported perfectly a few days ago. Then, trying to export them again now, the freeze-frame problems occurs.
When control clicking clips in any of my projects and selecting "Reveal in event browser", I now get the message that "the event for this clip is no longer available". Asking iMovie to "Reveal in Finder" works like a charm though.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Cheers,

The following information is extracted from the FCP User Manual, and gave me an explanation to such black extra frame at the end of my edits that I used to fund too. I hope it helps you.
Learning About the Out Point Inclusive Rule
Before you begin to set In and Out points, it’s important to understand the “Out point inclusive” rule that Final Cut Pro follows, so you can avoid an unexpected extra frame at your Out point.
Out point inclusive means that when you set an Out point at the position of the playhead, the frame that the playhead is on is included in your edit. This rule means that whenever you set In and Out points, the minimum duration set is always one frame long. For example, if you place the playhead on a specific frame, and then set both an In point and an Out point, the In point is placed at the beginning of the frame and the Out point is placed at the end, resulting in a one-frame duration. If this rule did not exist, it would be
possible to create edits with zero duration, which would be useless.

  • Can I take a frame from my project and use it as a custom menu background with CS4 and its Encore

My project is edited in CS4.
I moved it to Encore CS4.
I don't want to use any of the supplied menu templates in CS4 Encore.
I was hoping CS4 would be all I needed to create custom menus using scenes from my project.
My question is: Can I take a frame from my project and use it as a custom menu background with CS4 and its built in Encore or do I need some other element from the Adobe catalog to make these custom chapter menus and sub-menus?
    Thanks Jim

OK, I'm back. Here are my steps for creating Custom Menus with PS, En and PrPro:
In PrPro, move the CTI (Current Time Indicator) to the desired Frame. Check Frames on either side, with the Program Monitor’s Magnification to 100%, or maybe even 200% (you’ll need to scroll, but get a really clear picture). You want the clearest Frame in that area. With AME, in CS4, you’ll want to Export that Frame as .TIFF, or .BMP. I use .TIFF for this.
Now, for a caveat. When you Import this Exported Frame into Photoshop, be sure to check the specs., especially the PAR. You may have to use Image>PAR to adjust this to match your Project’s specs. Or, all might be perfect - just check this out.
Now, at this point, I choose the Library Menu, Blank, so that everything is setup. One can create the Menu from scratch, but careful attention needs to be paid to the exact naming conventions. At the very least, unless you’ve done this dozens of times before, use that Blank Menu, or similar as a guide, so you get things done, as they must be done.
Using that Blank Menu, just drag the Layer from your Exported Frame to your Menu image. It will appear above the black Background.
Add, or manipulate your Button Layer Sets, as is required, keeping them together. Remember that Button #1 will be the Button Layer Set, that is lower down in the Layers Palette. This can play a roll with Button Routing, back in Encore. Lower Button Layer Sets will have lower Button numbers.
Now, I always rename my Button Layer Sets, keeping the required characters - just changing the name. I also do all of my Button text in PS, and make sure to turn OFF Sync Button Names.
When done, Save_As .PSD, and then Import_As_Menu into Encore. Note: if you start with the Blank Menu, you can choose Edit in Photoshop, and then when done in PS, you just need to Save, and it will update in Encore. This is a personal workflow choice. I do the Edit in Photoshop route, but it is not necessary. One just needs to Import the resulting .PSD into Encore with Import_As_Menu, so that Encore does all the things that it needs to and recognizes the .PSD as a Menu.
When deciding what to base your Menu on, remember that you can "populate" your Menu with Buttons from the Functional Content. I’d suggest studying these Assets, and picking the ones that work best for you. You can still alter/edit those back in PS, so you just need to "get close."
Pay special attention to the required naming conventions. You cannot deviate from those first characters in the Button Layer Sets. They MUST be followed.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Premiere Elements 9 - unable to select a "poster frame" for DVD Menu - Scene Selection

I've tried a number of different DVD menu themes and the problem is the same for all.  The Scene Selections don't seem to provide any way to include a graphic for the poster frame.  Have been able to provide a menu background with no problem.  Interestingly, the poster frame section of the menu edit fields appears to be somewhat truncated (the spot where you would expect the "drag media here" shows only the bottom portion of a box with no wording and the input is truncated at 00;00;0 with the fifth zero partially cut off.
Any one else seen this?  I know I've provided graphics for the scene buttons in the past but cannot seem to get past this situation this time.
    Thanks

In Adobe Encore (the authoring program, included with PrPro), one can set the Poster Frame for non-Motion Thumbnails.
For showing a different Clip, in Motion Thumbnails, one must create Menus, that have a Video background, that just looks like it has Motion Thumbnails - they are actually PiP in the Video background.
I do not know about the often touted Sony DVD Architect, regarding setting Poster Frames.
PrE's authoring control is a bit limited, and is designed to get the "average" Project authored, with few navigational bells and whistles.
    Good luck,

  • How do I create a freeze frame from footage and extend that for 5 seconds?

I have a quicktime screen grab movie I've imported, and I want to hold on a certain frame that's at the very beginning of the clip, and then proceed with the movie when the voiceover (separate soundtrack) gets to a certain point.
    iMovie 11.
    Thanks
    doug

    Hi Doug,
Position the playhead/skimmer (vertical red line) at the very beginning of the clip. The playhead should snap to the first frame, provided you have this turned on in the menu item View > Snap to Ends.
Without moving the playhead, right-click (or Control-click) and select Add Freeze Frame from the pop-up menu. The default duration is 4 seconds (although this setting can be changed for individual projects in File > Project Properties). To adjust the duration in the timeline, double-click on the freeze frame to open the Inspector. In the Clip tab you can change the duration by typing in a new time.

  • HELP! Why does FCP Crash when Batch Exporting Freeze Frames?

I have been Batch Exporting a lot of freeze frames recently but just last week FCP just started to crash when I tried exporting. It will let me export one single freeze frame but no batches. Also, when I open FCP now some of the freeze frames I have made looks what appear to be like green digital hits on them. I thought it was a space issue but I have plenty of room and I've taken out my FCP Preferences and nothing seems like it's working. I have final cut version 5.1.4 and the Error Message Reads: "The Batch Export failed for some items. Please review the status column to identify which items had errors." When I check the status it says "File Error: Unknown Folder" which I don't understand at all.
    Any ideas?
    Power Mac 10.4.10
    Power Mac

Well it seems like it might be an OS or hardware problem rather than a FCP problem, however...
Have you installed Diskwarrior on your startup drive? If not, do it, and try launching it from your startup drive and then try running it on all other drives.
Describe your hardware configuration (you should really post all your system specs in your profile here). Can you change the batch export destination to another drive? Describe what your source material is, your sequence settings and the export settings. You might try changing your export settings.
This is not normal behavior and I'm sure we can solve this.

  • Help. sending fcp timeline to color changes some clips to freeze frames

I was finishing a project in FCP that was shot on the RED. I had a number of deliverables. I cut in FCP with REDs M-res proxy QT files then uprezed (replaced the footage) to H-res for my conform.
I then "sent to color" a number of different timelines. Everything was on one layer and there were no effects or speed ramps on any of the clips.
About half the time, the timelines would be fine. The other half of the time some of the shots came in as freeze frames from earlier in the clip. This was very problematic in that I couldn't color the same scene fully. I needed to get it done in a day so I had to match what color was doing in FCP with the clips that would not come across.
I moved the clips in the timeline but they would only come in as freezes.
    Anyone heard of this before?
It compromised the quality of my job and ended up being very costly.

    Let me get this straight.
You were editing with the proxy container Quicktimes in Final Cut?
If that is true, then I'm sort of surprised that COLOR opened at all.
You should have actually "down-rezzed" the QT containers to the "P" proxy. That will cause COLOR to open up and link to the original R3D raw 4K files (if that's what you were working with). That also raises the spectre of 3K... tell me that's not so, or that is Strike Two.
There is an associated utility with the "Clipfinder" software called ColorFixer (doesn't have anything to do with film processing) that will take away the so-called and well-documented "looping bug" that afflicts large-ish spanned RED files.
That's a couple of things that occur to me right away...

  • Settings for best quality freeze frame export?

Hi. I've done some reading in the search for this topic here, but I'm finding a lot of how-to's for exporting freeze frame, but not proper settings.
Using DV NTSC 29.97fps, I know it's far from ideal to get great quality still frames, but, I have a client who was disappointed with her photographer at her wedding and really liked my work and she is willing to pay me to go through and pull off stills from her wedding video.
I do this for virtually every wedding but I just use basic settings because the still frames are used for not more than dvd menu or perhaps a small image on the back of the jewel case.
But if she wants to print these then I'm wondering if someone here can offer suggestions on the proper settings to make them not only the best quality, but the proper dimensions.
    Thank you,
    Eric
    (soon-to-be-proud-new-owner-of-a-macpro-!)

From DV NTSC, your exported still frame will be just 720x480 pixels. Use any image editor to resize that to 720x534 (if it is NOT widescreen) or 864x480 (if it IS widescreen).
( Looks horrible doesn't it? You can't get any better quality than that, just because you - or she - wants to.)

  • FCP X / Motion 5 Drop Zone Video Freeze Frames Only!

Hmmm, well, I've followed the other discussions here regarding what appears to be an on-going issue with videos not playing (freeze frame only - usually the first frame of the clip) in a Drop Zone.  I'm using the latest versions of both FCP X (10.1.1) and Motion 5 (5.1).  I created a video generator in Motion with 15 drop zones for use in an open for a project I just started on.  These drop zones are sliding left and right in three bands across the canvas.  I can't get any of them to display moving video.  I've used drop zones before and had some success with getting video clips to play in them, but in this case I'm batting zero.
Has anyone found a way around this problem?  I may just import the videos into Motion and render them there since this open more than likely won't ever be used for any other project; nevertheless, I'd like to be able to use the Motion 5 template as it was designed to be used.
    Thanks.

The good news, Russ, is that I've made some progress!  To say that using Drop Zones can be a bit quirky is an understatement!  Nevertheless, your Pro Res hint seems to have fixed my issue.  I've been recutting the clips from the master archived files and saving them as Pro Res 422.  The file size is considerably larger that the H.264 files, but since it works I guess I won't argue that point!  :-)
I need to do a bit more investigation of this next point, but it also seems as if I need to move a frame or three into the clip before inserting it into the drop zone.  I had just been taking the clip and dumping it in as is.  When doing that I noticed that in some cases the clip either didn't play (freeze frame) or it started at some random (or at least what seemed to be random) location within the clip.  However, since I moved the start point in 2 or 3 frames (end point doesn't seem to matter) so far, at least, the clip plays every time and starts from the proper point.
I don't know if this mattered or not, but I completely deleted the library with the project and event that I was originally trying to edit to.  Since it wasn't working anyway there is nothing lost and I felt it was worth starting the project "fresh", so to speak.
So far I've only re-clipped and inserted 5 of the 15 drop zone videos but for now, at least, they are all working!
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.

  • Ideas for HELP sizing a photo to display as a menu background

Hey gang. I'm authoring in iDVD and have a photo with DVD credits that I want to display as a menu background. There won't be any buttons on the page. Just this image of DVD credits. The iDVD manual tells you to size photos for an NTSC 4:3 display at 720 x 540 pixels. However, when I drop it onto the menu, it automatically enlarges the image so that there's only a partial view of the image. The only adjustment that can be made is vertically. I've even tried shrinking the image with text and mounting it on a matte so that it appears in the TV safe viewing area, but no luck there. Same thing happens. Any ideas? If someone want to mess around with the image, let me know and i'll email it to you. Thanks!

hey there koshercuts, welcome to Discussions.
have you tried to edit your pic in iPhoto before dropping it into the iDVD menu? this is where you edit your pix, not in iDVD. also see this: http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/, Dan's site has a lot of great info, especially "Tips & Tricks".

  • Menu Background Images - distorted for some reason...??

    Hi again,
posted this problem a while ago, thought i had discovered a fix, but haven't had time to work on it in a few weeks. i have a high quality .tif image file 720x576 in size to use for my background image on a menu, but when it is placed in, the diagonal lines become jagged as if DVDSP was stretching the image in some way. i have tried a number of different dimensions (going by what i found in the help files) and nothing seems to work. the 720x576 .tif seems to be the closest so far...
any ideas why this is happening? the aspect ratio is set to 16:9 anamorphic and the image is the exact size of the canvas, so i don't understand why it is distorting.
    any help much appreciated.
    thanks
    Harry

    Glad you got it sorted...
But that actually makes no sense based on the information you gave.
If you are creating PAL menus then you can either use the latest versions of Photoshop which use Pixel ration Compensation (or something like that) to show you in Photoshop what a 16x9 menu would look like at 1024x576 when the actual file is really 720x576. If it's a 4x3 menu it will appear as 768x576 when it's actually 720x576
The other alternative is to create your menu at 1024x576 (as you said you had it as 16x9) then save out the menu from Photoshop as a 720x576 file and bring it into DVD-SP and flag it as 16x9 - which is what you said you had done...
So I am intrigued how you have now fixed it... when you started with a 720x576 file

  • Using LT for motion menu background – problems

I’m trying to use a LT texture (Canvas>Sinopia) as a motion menu background. I exported 30 secs of the rendered texture direct from LT. The QT file size is 1.09 GB. Couldn’t get it to work in DVDSP. Took that file into FCP and re-exported it using custom settings. File size now 108.7 MB. Still doesn’t work in DVDSP.
Should I be putting the 30 second file through Compressor? Is it the large file size that is causing the problems?
Importing the .lpr file into DVDSP also doesn’t work (although I prefer to pre-render all assets, otherwise DVDSP slows to a crawl).
I’ve now tried the texture as a 5 sec version (20 MB file) – works fine, but there’s an annoying jump in the loop every 5 secs. If I could fix that, the menu would probably be OK.
    Any advice appreciated.
    Regards. Robert.

Both solutions worked. Wish I could award 2 solved stars.
Compressor produced an m2v file of 21.9 MB. I'm going with that because the workflow is quicker and simpler on my old setup.
Exporting as DV from FCP produced a file size of 103.2 MB. My DVDSP slows down with large file sizes, so I'll give it a miss. Or could still be me doing something incorrectly.
I'm working in SD PAL 16:9.
    Help was much appreciated.
    Regards. Robert.
