FCP keeps exporting progressive ProRes files as Interlaced

I have captured a clip from tape using 1920x1080 25i setting on Kona3 card with the ProRes HQ codec. The tape is progressive but there was no option to capture 1080 25psf so I was informed that 1080 25i would be fine.
FCP states the clip has Upper field dominance so I set it to 'None' and dropped it into a 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 25fps sequence.
The Sequence timeline settings were 'None' and the Prores Advanced codec options the Interlaced option was also unchecked. All fine, exported the clip based on Current Settings to render a new (progressive) Quicktime.
I then reimported the rendered clip it back into FCP and it stated that the rendered clip is still Upper Field dominant. Short of reencoding through Compressor (v slow and creates a second generation encoded file) I cannot seem to get FCP to export this material as progressive.
Is there a way I can just change the Field Dominance flag/tag of the clip within FCP or another application to "None" withut any rerenders/encodes?
Any help gladly appreciated as this is becoming a real mystery/headache!

Jerome Colas wrote:
If I manually change it for every source file to progressive (which should be done automaticallt by Compressor), I then get a progressive output.
But that defeats Compressor's purpose and is a source for error.
Jérôme.
I'm not sure what this means.
And I wonder whether it's a metadata thing and, and while disconcerting, whether it will have any practical effect on your project.
As a test try a single clip. Turn on frame controls with output fields set to progressive. See if it is now identified correctly. If it is bring that into FCP and compare against that against the one that is identified as interlaced.
If Frame Controls doesn't work, then I think I would use MPEG Streamclip. It's fast and has a very good batch feature.
Good luck.

  • T.V. Station and FCP bin export = native QT file?

I've got a few hundred short (15-20 second) bloopers on DVC-Pro that a local T.V. Station will be re-digitizing for me - into uncompressed QT - for me to work with at home.
I didn't want to have to throw ALL these clips into a time line just to have to export -each one- into an uncompressed QT movie.
The Tech said that we could export - right from the bins (after digitizing) and that the clips would all be in a NATIVE? QT format. I explained that my editing programs at home - are running QT 6.5 - and asked him if it would it accept this format . . . he said yes ???
Question: Is this correct? Can we export straight from the bin, and is this media type a QT file I will be able to open, or is it a FCP media type?????
I have to add a Title, and a Logo to each clip before I can display them on the internet - and since all of the programs I purchased (AE, etc.) are Mac OS 9 -
am I screwed - and have to purchase $1,000 new A.E. to be able to work with them?
I do own a new Mac Min, with Leopard - so I have the computer ability - but would just like to be able to use the clips - with the programs and OS that is currently working well.
Really appreciate any help or knowledge that you could share.
    Thank you
    Luke Wonderly
    at videodance-cm

I understand how to get them into their system now . .
Luke, I am glad that you understand because my head is spinning just trying to figure out what you want to do. How are you going to get them into their system? What program are they going to use?
There isn't going to be a problem if they export to a QT file - IS THERE?
I mean QT is QT weather made on windows or Mac - right????
Well there may be. Like I said earlier QT is just a wrapper, the codec is what you have to be concerned with. You keep throwing around the term uncompressed, but I don't think that you know what you mean by that. Uncompressed is for working with an analog format like Digibeta. DVCPro is a digital format that can be easily captured in its native form. In FCP you do this by setting your capture settings to DV/DVCPro. But you haven't said what they will use to capture this footage so it's hard to say if it will work.
I wish one of you guys knew a cool trick to get them to export as a 6.5 edition of QT - but they're currently at 7. something
Third time, being a QT file is not the issue, versions have nothing to do with it. Codec is king. I can export a QT file from FCP in 100 different ways and only a few of them can be transferred to another computer (w/o FCP on it) and play. You must know what codec you need them saved as. Think of QT as the foil wrapper on the candy bar. If you have 3 different candy bars and they all have gold foil wrappers are they the same, or is one milk chocolate, one dark chocolate and one with almonds? Yet they all look the same.
    Luke, here is your homework.
    1. Find out what the TV station is going to use to capture the tapes.
    2. Use Google and wikipedia to learn about codecs.
    3. Post your complete system specs, drives, and software versions.
Only after you do this can we help. (and even then I am thinking that it is hopeless.)
    Good Luck.

  • How can i export Apple ProRes files from AME CC running on Windows?

Hi the titles says it all really - i can't find any apple prores settings in Adobe Media Encoder CC and i need to export to this format. I thought that Adobe Premier Pro CC handled these files natively - is that niot the case?
    Any advice
    Thanks
    Fabio

Yes, you can import and edit ProRes media on Windows or Mac OS.
You can only export to ProRes on Mac OS.

  • FCP keeps dumping my render files

    I can't understand this. I am using FCP 5.1.2 on a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5
When I render video in my sequence everything is fine. The sequence plays, the red line above the timeline disappears as it should. Then when I quit FCP and then either immediately restart FCP or even some days later start FCP, everything is unrendered, the red lines are back and I get the media offline prompt to reconnect media. When I locate the media, the files are always in the trash. It seems to happen when I shutdown the computer, because when I boot up my trash shows content, and even before I launch FCP I can check the trash and it always contains FCP render files.
Anyone any idea what is going on?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello and thank you to all that have replied to my troubles. Very big apologies for the delay in my response. Other work issues forced me to move on from this problem. Needless to say, this one hasn't gone away!
Here is a bit more info:
I have used FCP Rescue. I have deleted my FCP prefs folder. The root to my scratch disk is HD2/Final Cut Pro/Capture Scratch. This drive has between 60 and 100GB free most of the time. This drive is not my startup volume.
Just for reference, I am not sure if the folder heirarchy is correct for FCP. My Final Cut Pro folder on this drive contains the following folders in its' root:
    Audio Capture Scratch
    Audio Render Files
    Autosave Vault
    Capture Scratch
    Render Files
    Thumbnail Cache Files
    Waveform Cache Files
Should all these folders be in the root of my Final Cut Pro folder? The reason I ask is that when I look into my Render Files folder the most recent projects I have worked on do not have project folders within this folder. In fact they do not seem to exist anywhere, apart from in the trash!!!
I hope you can pick back up on this issue for me. I am really only just getting to grips with FCP having been an AVID Media Composer person in a previous life. The software seemed fine for me when I didn't need to know what it did behind the scenes. Now I do and as you can tell, I'm struggling.
    Thanks again.

  • What is the best seeting to export as smaller file size AVI from FCP?

Hi, I know the topic sounds very similar to many of AVI post it had been up, however, somehow, I do not find the right answer that I'm looking for.
I have a couple animation created from QT as "image sequence".
I simply want to export as avi file.
Here is the question I have.
    1. If I choose DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, and choose scan mode as Progressive, I get interlacing looking quality video.
    2. If I choose compressor type as "NONE" then even I set as "least" quality, the file size will be over 1G..although, that's the quality I'm trying to archive.
Is there any other setting I can choose to get good quality with lower file size avi? I have seen or download avi file on the net with very good quality and still download-able file size...

What is the QT method? (Export from QT Player?)
Yes, 10 hour plus is ridiculous. I'm guessing that there was either something wrong with your Internet connection and/or at the You Tube end of the uploasd/compression process.
Innocentius and Hugh are right; using Compressor (or MPEG Streamclip) and using YT's  uploader is the most reliable workflow.(Since Google changed the account verification process, there have been reports of upload problems using Share>You Tube.)  In addition, you have more control over the quality of your movie. You can create multiple custom settings in Compressor and then Share > Compressor custom settings. It will go faster if you export out of FCP as a Pro Res 422 file; should take 3-4 minutes top. The Web encode for a 3 minute video in Compressor might take 15 minutes, depending on your system. MPEG Streamclip is probably a little faster.

  • How do I export when FCP keeps crashing for large QuickTime exports?

    Forum,
I have a 108-minute finished Final Cut Pro project. Ultimately, I'd like to burn it on a DVD so that it can be watched by any Joe-Schmoe using an ordinary DVD player. I'll be using DVD Studio Pro to do the burning. And before this, I plan to compress using Apple Compressor.
    But...
I can't export this file to QuickTime! FCP keeps CRASHING about halfway through the process. I'm preserving the Current Settings, which, by the way, are XDCAM EX 1080p24 VBR.
I have four internal hard drives used as follows:
    D1 OSX and FCP
    D2 audio media
    D3 visual media
D4 location of FCP files and scratch disk
I also have a MyBook USB2.0 external drive available should this be of use.
Any suggestions for a viable workflow here? Should I be exporting to QuickTime first? Is my configuration doomed? Should I export straight to Compressor?
    thanks,
    Shanked

Is there a way to do this WITHOUT your suggested software?
Sure, but its very manual and the Corrupt Clip Finder really just automates that for you ... but I get your point about keeping things clean and can't fault that philosophy.
First, you can use the Tools > Render Manager to delete all the sequence's render files and references. Then just play through the entire sequence (in the sequence RT menu you can enable the option to Play Base Layer Only). If the corruption was in one of the render files then you should now be able to play through without issue. If the corruption is in one of the clips then you should discover that FCP will crash or throw up an error when it tries to play though that clip ... keep a note of where this error occurs as thats your corrupt clip. Similarly, after trashing renders you can re-render, keep an eye on the render progress ... the error will be thrown proportionate to the area of the timeline where the corrupt source clip is contained. Additionally, yes, you can use the Reconnect Media function to selectively reconnect your source media to your masterclips, clip by clip ... the one that won't reconnect is going to be the problem child. That's the one you need to recapture/reimport from source.
    Hope it helps

  • I am trying to export an Ai file as a dxf - but keep getting a PARM error. What can i do?

I am trying to export an Ai file as a dxf - but keep getting a PARM error. What can i do?

You can't import MPEG-2 files directly to FCP X.
Can you play this file in Quicktime Player? If so, then you can use the free program MPEG Streamclip to convert this to Quicktime. Use the ProRes codec.

  • FCP/Compressor keep exporting horizontal green lines near the top and bottom mattes. What do I do?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to export a:
    1920x1080
    29.97
    Interlaced
    ProRes 422 HQ
    to:
DVD Best Quality (90 minutes) in Compressor
    Quality all the way high
    Mpeg-2
in Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor (both so far export with the green lines) and so far it has been to no avail. They show up right on the edge near the mattes. Most forums talk about a vertical green line but I am having problems with horizontal lines near the top and bottom.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

If you are sending your file via share to Compressor I would try this instead:
Export a QT reference(not self-contained or using QT conversion) file of your sequence to your desktop.
    Then:
Turn on frame controls in the MPG-2 setting and set all to best. Changing all settings to best will increase your render time greatly. You may want to do a :30 or 1min test.
In my experience Compressor can be inconsistent with HD to SD DVD MPG-2 conversion. Sometimes it works wonderfully and others times it does not.
I have had success with having FC do the SD conversion first.
Create a new 16x9 SD sequence
Add HD seq to SD and render
Export SD and then compress for DVD.

  • Scan mode when exporting - progressive or interlaced?

This may be a dumb question but I did a search and couldn't find anything definitive.
I have large uncompressed quicktime files that I need to export with the DVCPRO codec down to a file I can then use.
What's better to use as far as the scan mode? Progressive or Interlaced? And what's the difference between the two?
Any insight into this matter would be really helpful.

    In layman's terms...
    Film is Progressive.
    TV is Interlaced.
Computer monitors do not show interlaced material in its true form... that is with a 'gun' zooming down the screen showing one field and back up the screen showing the other 60 times a second, as in a TV.
If you really want to see what progressive material will look like you need a progressive monitor. If you really want to see what interlaced will look like you need an interlacing monitor (broad generalization, but kind of true... I mean, you can get a good idea what progressive will 'look' like on an interlacing monitor, but you won't get a good idea what interlaced will look like on a PROGRESSIVE monitor).
    SO...
What YOU really need to decide is 1) what type of LOOK you are going for... smooth 'reality' look of interlaced, or film-ish look of progressive, and 2) where you will be presenting this work... if it is for the web, realize that 90% of the monitors will be progressive in nature.
Don't be AFRAID of interlaced material... just use it for what it was intended for use with... er... in which it was intended to be used... er... well, you should get my point by now.
    Good luck,
    CaptM

  • Exporting prores files from adobe premiere on a windows 7 PC

Does anyone know if Media encoder can be set up to encode to Prores files.
If not how can I save edited prores files on my Adobe premiere timeline to a prores file for distribution.

AFAIK, You can only export to Proress if you are on a Mac.
On Windows you have to export to a lossless format and then use a converter.

  • How ro export small (compressed) files (.mpg) with sound from FCP or compr.

I have some dv pal footage that I need to store in in very small files. Then I need to convert it back to dv, for editing.
The quality (regarding artefacts and all that) is not important. The stuff was ripped from DVDs originally and are only to be used as reference.
Can I export an .mpg file with sound muxed into it from FCP or Compressor?
    H.264 produces to big files.
    Thanks for any replyes:)

    Hm, what a weird workflow.
I presume you are trying to edit with this stuff in FCP, so my question is, If you are grabbing media off DVDs, and converting with MPEG Streamclip or some such thing, and then trying to down-rez to edit with proxy footage, how do you plan to use timecode to reconnect to the high-res media when your cut is done?
h.264 can produce to big files or small files, depending on the settings of the file you tell it to produce to.
Consider that the amount of time you would spend converting media back and forth to low-res formats of lousy quality could be much more valuable than the cost of a firewire drive which you could use to convert your DVDs directly to DV, which you will find much easier to work with.
Hope this is helpful to U

  • Modding the Export Layers to Files script to preserve .jpg quality

Please forgive me if I am posting this incorrectly, but as the thread I initially replied to is marked as Answered I started to wonder whether my question would be seen or not so I started this new thread.  My original question is located in the thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/2795719#2795719 because Kari was having a similar issue to mine, but with a different file format.  My original text:
I am having a similar issue, except that I need to save each layer as a .jpg, and the Export Layers to Files script is compressing the images in some fashion so that a previously seamlessly tiling layer now has a border that ruins the tile.  If I save each layer individually using either the Save As command or Save for Web and Devices with the proper settings (Maximum Quality, Progressive, and Baseline Standard), the resulting images don't acquire this border, so I feel pretty certain it is something in the script that is messing up (changing the compression of) the layers, but I honestly don't know what.  I have tried modifiying the jpeg portion of the script this way, hoping to prevent it from deviating from the usual Save As options:
            case jpegIndex:
                docRef.bitsPerChannel = BitsPerChannelType.EIGHT;
                var saveFile = new File(exportInfo.destination + "/" + fileNameBody + ".jpg");
                jpgSaveOptions = new JPEGSaveOptions();
                jpgSaveOptions.embedColorProfile = true;
                jpgSaveOptions.formatOptions = FormatOptions.STANDARDBASELINE;
                jpgSaveOptions.matte = MatteType.NONE;
                jpgSaveOptions.quality = jpegQuality; // 12
                docRef.saveAs(saveFile, jpgSaveOptions, true, Extension.LOWERCASE);
                break;
but this doesn't seem to affect whatever setting is being changed.  Layers saved to .jpg this way still acquire the border.  I don't see what line might control whether the image is saved as progressive or not, nor anything to affect the text setting "Maximum" that I use when I successfully save each layer individually.
I am a complete novice at scripting, so please excuse/explain the obvious mistakes I may be making here.
I have since installed the script listener plug in and isolated a bit of script for saving the intended way, and hope to insert this snippet into the Export Layers as Files script, but I can tell that some of the lines are extraneous (like where it points to the file path I took), but I don't know what is safe to trim out.  I sincerely appreciate any assistance with this!

Here is the script that uses scriptlistner to do the jpeg save. Note I changed the name by adding '_mod' to the end to remind you that it has been edited. You can remove the origianl version by moving the file to another folder outside the scripts folder or by adding ~ at the start of the filename.
I recommend saving this as Export Layers to Files_mod.jsx. If this doesn't work for you we can try using the scriptlistener saveForWeb.

  • How does FCP handle 23.98 DV Files?

    Hi All,
Has anyone Edited using the DV-NTSC 24P (23.98fps) Easy Setup?
    1) How does FCP handle this video connected to a DV Converter Box like the Canopus ADVC-110?
    2) Does it actually play at 23.98fps on a monitor connected to the DV Converter Box?
    3) Does it get converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it gets displayed?
    4) is it displayed at 29.97fps or is it really being displayed at 23.98fps?
these are things that I am not sure of.
sorry if I posted this message a couple of times. I didn't know that hitting the "Tab" Button posts the message, I thought it would just function like the Tab in a normal Text editor and indent a line. But here it doesn't.
    thanks

    Hi,
Thanks for the feed back. I guess I should fill in the caps a little.
    *DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE:*
One of our main Clients Disney, is migrating to a Tapeless Workflow based on ProRes HQ 422 @ 23.98fps. From here on out, they will only send us ProRes HQ 422 1920x1080 files @ 23.98fps and they want us to Edit every project we work on for them @ 23.98fps. At the moment, it doesn't sound like they care if we Edit our projects in ProRes HD or some SD format, but the important thing to them is that we edit @ 23.98fps.
    PROBLEM:
Our facility doesn't have the infrastructure to support 25 machines accessing ProRes HQ 422 files. Our facility was built to support DV NTSC @ 29.97fps and we have been working this way fairly well, for a number of years.
    SOLUTION:
I am trying to find a way to continue to us our current equipment and satisfy Disney's request to work on all their projects at 23.98fps, starting from 1920x1080 ProRes HQ 422 files @ 23.98fps. So, it was my hope to be able to take the 23.98fps ProRes files and export them to 23.98fps DV NTSC. This way we wouldn't have to reconfigure our entire Facility (which would cost a couple hundred Thousand dollars).
    My approach was to:
    1) Use Media Manager to render a new DV NTSC file at 23.98fps, which it does pretty well for the most part. It keeps the Timecode consistent between the two files (very important), but doesn't allow you to Letterbox the 16x9 video in the 4x3 frame, it just stretches it to fill the entire 4x3 frame (not so good).
    2) Then import the newly created DV NTSC 23.98fps file into a FCP Project based on the DV NTSC 24(p) 23.98fps EASY SETUP. Which works well. No problems there.
    3) Then Play the file in FCP out through a Firewire based Canopus ADVC-110 DV Converter connected to a SD Sony Monitor. This seemed to worked fine also.
The fact that it plays is great!!!! But, that brings up the question, is it really playing a 23.98fps?
My understanding of Standard Definition and specifically DV NTSC, is that it can only be displayed at 29.97fps, it doesn't support 23.98fps natively. So the fact that it played when I tested it got me thinking that I may be missing something here and DV NTSC and other SD equipment (like the Sony SD Monitor) can playback/support 23.98fps SD video. But that goes against everything I know up to this point!!!
Have I been wrong all this time?
    1) Can SD Video and DV NTSC Video be displayed at 23.98fps?
    2) Or is it getting converted to 29.97fps somewhere in the process before it is getting displayed?
    3) If it is getting converted back to 29.97fps, then where is it getting converted, FCP or in the DV Converter Box?
I am sorry I went a little long on this email, but it is a problem that will have great influence on they way we work for a couple of years to come!!
    Thanks for your input!!

  • How do I export detached audio files as separate files, for Pro Tools processing?

My project is a live band performance. I have every song as a separate Event with associated audio. I have detachd all the audio from all the video Events. I now want to Export the audio files to Pro Tools for editing, then Import the edited audio back into FCP X and snap the edited audio to the associated video Events.
My problem is this: FCP X keeps exporting the audio as a single large WAV file, rather than as separate WAV files. In fact, the video events are separate, and so the audio associated with the video Events are separate.
I first renamed the Role of every audio file as "Music", then did a Share --> Export Media of all "Music" audio Roles. After exporting, I found it was one large WAV file, rather than separate files of different sizes.
As a 2nd try, I created Sub-Roles for each audio clip, and named each one with a distinct Sub-Role name. I then Exported all these Sub-Roles (yes, tedious). The result was that every exported WAV file was the same size, the same as the file size in my first try. The only audio that could be heard in each file was the audio in that particular song, but FCP X still created the very large file with silence in all the rest of the file. Since the file lengths don't match the original audio fil lengths, there will be a problem when I Import the edited files back into FCP X and want to Snap them into place.
    Question:
How can I export the individual detached audio clips as separate files, the length of each file equaling the length of the original audio file in FCP X?
Do I need to separate the detached audio into separate Layers visually in the Project Timeline, so they are not touching? Or does this matter?
    Help!!

    No.
You need to explore Compound Clips. This workflow may or may not be of help.
Select an Event with clips in it and press Option+G to make a (blank) compound clip.
Select the Event Browser, create a new Event and call it 'Effects'.
Drag the Compound Clip into this Event.
Right-click the clip and select 'Open in Timeline'.
Select the timeline and press Option+W. This will add a Gap Clip to the timeline.
Select the gap clip and press Ctrl+D then type in the duration you want the clip to be.
Now open a project and select and copy one of the clips with effects etc.
Open the Compound Clip in the Timeline again, select the gap clip and press Option+Cmd+V to paste the effects into your Compound Clip.
This clip is now saved in your Browser and will remain there for you to copy and then paste the effects into any clip in any project.
It's a bit clunky, but it works - and once you learn about Compound Clips, you can work wonders with them. As an example, if you want to add more effects without overwriting the effects in the Compound Clip, simply make the Compound Clip into a Compound Clip (again) and add the effects. They will be added to the original effects.
    Andy.
