File Browser always clears

When I pass a string to a File Browse item from one page to another, and then back, my file browse object is empty, even though the application appears to know its value.
In this example, I've shown how I'm debugging my code.

Hello Ken,
Scott is right. The HTML standard, and the way it's being implemented in the browsers, put some security restriction over this item type. This behavior has nothing to do with APEX. For example, you also can’t set a default value to this item, and the browser will always clear it upon submit.
Also, if you’ll look at the value of the item, as the system “see” it, you’ll see that it’s not exactly in a valid format for the File Browse item. The APEX engine prefixes the file name with an internal ID number, as part of the loading process. In this state, this value is useless as a file brows value.

Unable to Clear File Browse

Hi ,
In one of my page I have File Browse item and storage type is WWV_FLOW_FILES.
by using page process Clear Cache for all items on pages I am clearing all items on this pages. I assign this process to Clear button.
my requirement is After I chose the file to load and hit Clear button, the screen goes blank

I am using Apex 4.1

problem is in every browser.

as you click brows file and pick your file, and before you submit your page ... the file gets uploaded to Flow_files table.....

Select any Index type and from dates select just one day or any number of days. Click "Get Details" button. This will open tabular data on loaded page (with link CSV file link at bottom).
When I click this link, it opens CSV file in new tab (in Firefox browser) and does not open download window (just as in case of other file formats like *.zip, *.rar or *.xls).
Right-click of link does not give "save as" or "save file" option.
Firefox is my preferred and default browser.

How to drive bridge like a file browser

File browsers normally have an address bar, or box showing current address, and allowing user to type in addresses.
Why does bridge not have that feature?
With that missing, bridge, instead of being a file browser is really about half of a file browser.
Then even using the limited folders dialog, on windows 7 I sometimes see differences in what bridge is able to see, and what a real browser sees.
An example might be when bridge is started by way of being called to download pictures from a connected camera, C:\users\<USER>\My Pictures... is no where to be found when browsing with the `folders' dialog, although it is clearly visible to real browsers.
In fact if I drag an image from that directory to bridge preview pane, in the past, that would instantly show in the folders panel, and I would see the exact folder I just dropped the image from... Not so, on my new windows 7 installl with CS4 installed. At least it is not always the case.
Instead of the folder view snapping to the folder where the image came from it just snaps to the top level `computer' folder.
But if I close bridge and restart it, then the folder view starts to behave more normally.
This occurs regularly if bridge is opened by way of connecting my camera and choosing bridge as the tool to open the pictures.
Closing and reopening corrects the behavior.
But back to the lack of a navigation box: With that missing, I find it necessary to do a lot more traipsing through the filesystem than should be necessary. I have to clickety clack my way to foldes several layers deep in the filesystem rather than typing a quick address and going directly there.
Several versions back some kind soul wrote an add-on the created a navigation box... But far as I know, there isn't one for recent versions of bridge.
I'm really curious why something so basic and so obviously usefull would be left out in version after version of brigde.
Are there any add ons that add a navigation box to bridge?

Are you using bridge cs5? In cs5 you can use the path bar directly to type in an address. Click on the last item in the path bar to open bar for editing at that folder. Clicking on a higher level item/folder will open the path bar for editing at that folder. For example, navigate to <username/My Pictures>. In the address bar you should see Desktop > user > My Pictures. Clicking on My Pictures will change the address bar into one that you can type in: <C:\Users\username\Pictures.\ >. If you click on the username you should see <C:\Users\username\ >. Type away!

Why cache size doesnt increase beyond 63 MB(longer files browsing) & then disappear?

during larger files streaming/browsing, cache formed for the same files ( in my firefox cache folder) remain max 63 MB only. i want to increase their length to the length of the file i browse/stream. i increased the offline storage to 1024 MB from mozilla tools >network> offline storage. let me kno wt can i do??

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

Firefox hangs on browser history clearing...can I do anything about it?

There's about 7 months worth of browsing history in my Firefox profile. Trying to clear it "entirely" is giving me trouble, even in safe mode. Cache, cookies, and everything '''else''' clears fine in a small amount of time. I'm writing this question in Chrome as we speak because Firefox is currently unusable.
The problem is with clearing browser history (only on time setting "everything") specifically because Firefox will hang (and entirely freeze the GUI) until I decide to manually kill it in the task manager. The firefox.exe process shows a curious, steady 13% cpu utilization during this task on a core i7-920 cpu. Same result in safe mode. Same result if I try to set the browser history clearing settings "when I close Firefox" -- Firefox will indeed close but still be listed in the task manager taking up a 13% cpu utilization and refuses to open again until I manually kill it. So far I've waited for around an hour for the process to complete but honestly though, the task of "deleting 7 months worth of browsing history" should only takes seconds...possibly "minutes" maximum on a mid-range PC, no?
Some additional info on my machine: it's custom built from 2009 but it still performs strongly. Not too long ago I upgraded to a Samsung 840 Pro SSD and this is where the Firefox profile is on. Even though I only have 6GB of RAM, I still enable "Rapid Mode" in Samsung Magician. That process will chew through 5-6GB fairly easily, but it's still a noticeable speed increase over my native SATA II chipset limitation on my motherboard. Intel's ICH10R raid controller is a bit dated, but it works (mostly) and gives me a cheap raid1 solution for a couple of existing storage drives in my system (they're not related to the OS drive anyway.) I have set the recommended amount of 10% over-provisioning on the SSD. I keep a very close eye on the software I chose to execute so I'm fairly confident that there isn't anything else (hardware '''or''' software related) "slowing down" the system. Drivers/Win7 x64/Firefox 33 are all up to date (even running on "legacy" status now with my GPU drivers.) I do have a probably "more than average" number of extensions and custom scripting via Greasemonkey...I also have quite a bit of customization on Reddit from the "Reddit Enhancement Suite" tool -- so I wouldn't be surprised if "more than average" customization somehow corrupted the '''places.sqlite''' file and this is the explanation for my current troubles. I get rid of unnecessary plugins like Java but there's some you can't really mess with like Google's "update" plugin that's automatically installed if you have Chrome installed on your system for example.
So, after talking about all of that, let's talk about some realistic options. I could "reset" back to a factory Firefox installation but I would need to backup all of my extension data so I'm hoping that's a "last resort." What do you think about these options:
1. Letting the task run all night and see if it actually finishes in the morning, even if it's only using 13% cpu.
2. Following this option: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1004992#answer-587688 where you simply manually delete the places.sqlite file (and then hope all your extensions are still intact -- considering that was posted for Firefox 29.) Backing up bookmarks is no issue but I would really feel worried that "other settings" would go with this file.
3. I '''could''' temporarily take my storage raid1 offline as Intel's raid controller and its limited bios memory is likely the biggest bottleneck in my system. However I would probably risk blue-screening on Windows startup as I don't know how the OS would react to such a traumatic change in SATA configuration type from "RAID" to "AHCI"...plus the Intel Matrix Storage Console is (I believe) no longer in development so it would probably break too and I would probably somehow end up losing the raid volume, something I'd rather avoid than "experiment with." I wish Samsung Magician was able to do more with the SSD SATA connection and not let it revert to a legacy "perhaps IDE-like" mode (it doesn't detect bios raid modes) but I guess there's only so many things a 2009 motherboard can do.
4. Your suggestions?
I think the main thing I learned from all this is to be sure to clean your history/cache on a regular basis and don't let it build up like I did. I had operated for some time knowing that it would be nice to keep a history of every site I visited because I could go back and look at specific times for when I visited associated sites as sort of "online diary" to see how I spend my time throughout the months. Turns out I paid the price for this assumption.

Safari 5.1.7 local storage not always clearing upon reset

There are several threads through out this forum regarding cookies being accepted regardless of settings, but much of those seem to be fixed by one of the recent security updates (seperate from an actual Safari update), including fixed for me. But, have noticed that "local storage" items do not always clear out upon a reset of safari (all boxes checked). In fact, sometimes, it takes two or three resets to completely clear them out. I have verified this behavior on several mac's running SL each yeilding the same. I just wondered if anyone else has seen this, or has found a solution (or if this is expected behavoiur). Does this indicate a security threat within the browser? I have used the feedback to Apple to report this.

Nope. It's very erratic. For example, just now I cycled several times between the inbox and the smart mailbox and even closed and re-opened. The inbox showed messages. Then I quit mail and re-opened, the inbox was empty. It took a couple more cycles of quit and re-open to get an inbox display. But as soon as I got it back on, and then closed or changed mailboxes, it disappeared when I went back to the inbox.

And just for reference, when I first had this issue last week under 10.6.8, I read several posts on this forum wherein other users had problems with the inbox display. Other than the smart mailbox "fix", I never did find a definitive solution or explanation as to why it is occuring.

Possible to set the Created_by column value for File Browse?

I'm using database account authentication and then a user gets to upload a file. Then my stored procedure reads the file. I was investigating a problem, happened to search the apex_workspace_files view and noticed the created_by column is always set to APEX_PUBLIC_USER for the files my users upload. Is there some way I can set that value when they log in, so I can track who actually did the upload?

I was just using the standard File Browse item, so getting the blob from the workspace view. Though I've seen notes here about loading to your own table, what I had seemed to work (and was done) fairly well. There were just these little features I wanted to use...

Dave, I'm not sure which stored procedure you're suggesting I add the apex_custom_auth.get_username value to? I hoped that the internal File Browse routine would pick up the get_username value automatically instead of the application definition Public User value.

IPad/iPhone file browser (iPhone Explorer) no longer working after iTunes update

iTunes freezes up on me a lot when I connect my iPad, so I prefer to add files to apps using a file browser like iPhone Explorer. However, after this most recent iTunes/Quicktime update, this and other programs like it don't work.
My computer is running Windows XP (yeah, I know it's old, but I'm not made of money!). I have an iPad 2 with the most recent iOS version installed.
Here's the error message iPhone Explorer gives me:
"iPhone Explorer is unable to load the app directories because the version of CoreFoundation.dll installed on your system doesn't work properly. This sucky DLL likely got on to your computer because of a recent update in the Safari web browser. Because this sucky DLL is shared between many other Apple programs, reverting back to the non-sucky version is more complicated than just uninstalling and reinstalling a couple programs. We recommend waiting a couple months for the next Safari update and hopefully Apple will have this stuff fixed then."
I don't have Safari installed on my computer. Just iTunes (and Quicktime).
As a result, you can't browse the app directories, so you can't add any files to apps. I tried uninstalling iTunes and replacing it with an older version, but it wouldn't open because it said the library file was created by a "newer version." I'm also having some trouble even getting iTunes to show the files in my apps (under iPad -> Apps -> scroll to bottom of the screen), but that might just be a symptom of my old iTunes-freezing problems.
I'm kind of stuck. Anyone else experience this problem or have any suggestions? Thanks!!

That's XP SP3 I hope? iPhone Explorer support is shown at the bottom of the page you linked above or at [email protected] and it's them you should be asking really.
You should be keeping iTunes and the iPad software always up to date for security reasons. If that breaks external software then they are the ones to ask.
If you are having problems with the iPad then try resetting it by clicking the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. You wont lose anything.

File browse : How to keep the file path in the file browse field?

1) file browse field called P2_FILE_PATH.
2) a select list with submit : P2_REGION
If i upload some file d:\abc.gif , then select some region in the P2_REGION,
P2_FILE_PATH will become empty. But in the session, i can find the blob value. but not the "d:\abc.gif "
Using the following script I could capture the value of P2_FILE_PATH in a field
P2_TEST.

P2_TEST contains d:\abc.gif .
How to retain the file path, though some other field is selected and submitted?

Hello Archana,
You can't do what you want because of some HTML security restrictions – nothing to do with APEX. As you found out, You can capture the value of this item. You can't set it. After submitting the page, the browser is the one to clear the item.
The only workaround is to work with AJAX and not submit the page until the end of the user input phase.

File Browse is emptied after failed validation

Why does the file browse text box get emptied after a failed validation? Is there any way to prevent this?
To further explain, create a form on a page with two page items, a text box and a file browse item, then put a not null validation on the text box. When you submit the page with a null text box, but with a file selected for the browse button, then validation catches and throws the error message back to the user when the page refreshes. However, the file browse text box is emptied, and the user has to reselect the file before resubmitting the page.
Is this a bug, or just the way it is supposed to work? Any way around it?

This is not a bug. Actually, it has nothing to do with APEX. The behavior of the file browse item is controlled by the HTML standard, which clears the field for security reasons.
If you pay close attention to Denes example, you’ll see that even when the validation error page is displayed, the file browse item itself is being cleared. The JavaScript generated file path is the one that retain its value. I don’t have access to Denes code, but I’m assuming that in his uploading procedure he’s using the JavaScript generated path.

Where the file browse item is concern, no workaround.
In your specific case, where the validation you need is “not null”, you can create a JavaScript validation, and fire it before submitting the page (as part of the submit button). That way, the browser will not clear the file browse item, because the page will not be submitted without proper values in your items.

There's not much you can do about the first issue other than change the way the select works. You're having it submit the page for something - why not make that an Ajax process? Then no submit would be needed so no value would be cleared out.

Modifying File Browse item through Javascript

I would like to modify the value of a File Browse item with javascript in my Submit button under certain circumstances. I would like to remove the file name (and path) from the File Browse field, so that the file is not automatically uploaded when the Submit button is pressed. It would seem I could "null" out the filename within the javascript function and then follow that with doSubmit ('SUBMIT'). The rest of the page values would be posted to the database, but the file would not get loaded. However, I cannot figure out how to access and modify the filename in the File Browse field with javascript. I've tried using ".value" and ".src" but to no avail. Saw a thread that says there is a bug with File Browse items in versions earlier that 2.2 (I'm using 2.0), and that you needed to fall back on the "p_t xx" notation, but I can't find any information on what that is. Appreciate any help.

I apologize for the multiple threads. The response to my initial inquiry on thread Inserting/uploading data without inserting/uploading a document was that "others" would be better equipped to help me than the initial responder, so I didn't think I was supposed to continue with that thread. (Haven't used this forum much.) I found a second thread (the one with the "p_tXX" notation, and responded to it, but wasn't sure if all older threads were still active, so I also iniitiated a thread on my own.
In response to the inquiry about why not using an after submit computation to null out the File Browse item, what I am trying to prevent is the uploading of a file to the WWV_FLOW_FILE_OBJECT$ table, if there is an entry in my File Browse item, when all the user really wants to do is update some data items on the main portion of the page. I have a Apply Changes button on the main data entry form, and then I also have (at my user's request) a separate form and Submit button on the page where the user may enter a file name to upload. The trouble exists when the user is only trying to modify data in the main form, but has also left an entry in the File Browse item. When the page is submitted, the data is uploaded OK, but the file is also uploaded via HTMLDB_APPLICATION_FILES, since there is an entry in the File Browse item. What I'm trying to do, is clear that File Browse item out when the user presses the main form Apply Changes button, so that the file does not get uploaded. The users want the ability to upload a file, but only when that is their direct intent. Obviously, I do not want to clear out the File Browse item under those circumstances. Hope this is clear; sometimes difficult to satisfy the users needs (whims?). Appreciate any help.
