File.exists() vs. File.getAbsoluteFile().exists()

Is there a well known cause for File.exists() to have a different return value from File.getAbsoluteFile().exists()?
This thread: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=428403&messageID=2595075 says that this can be the result if you attempt to change your current working directory, but as far as I can tell I don't do anything like that, no System.setProperties or anything. I am running from JUnit, but it doesn't seem like that would make a difference. Any ideas of what I should look for?
Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. I have looked through the API, and I understand the difference between relative and absolute path if that's the difference you mean. My (incorrect, apparently) assumption was that relativeFile.exists() would always refer to the same location as relativeFile.getAbsoluteFile().exists()-- That is, at one point or another, you more or less concatenate the working directory and the relative path before checking to see if that exists
I'm sorry I cannot post any example code because I don't know what could cause this situation. I was hoping for a general possible cause or two that might give me an idea where to look in my application

  • Get the duration of all mp3 files inside a directory

    Hello everyone,
    I am working on a little project done with swing. Since I need an mp3 player inside my swing application, I found a really good solution with JavaFX 2. I have never worked with JavaFX before, therefor it seems to me a little bit strange on some parts.
    Anyway.
    I created a button on my application and as soon as somebody presses that button, the application should scan recursivly a unique directory for mp3 files and store the information of artist, title and track length into a database.
    The mp3 player I created is based on the example from this page:
    http://www.java2s.com/Code/Java/JavaFX/Mp3playerwithmetadataviewandcontrolpanel.htm
    I understand the source code for most parts, but some behaivors are not really clear to me. My thoughts about getting the complete length of the mp3 file was
    media.getDuration
    or
    mediaplayer.getTotalDuration
    but both results are NaN if I call .toMillis();
    Instead I need to create a listener (why?)
    private class TotalDurationListener implements InvalidationListener {
        @Override
        public void invalidated(Observable observable) {
          final MediaPlayer mediaPlayer = songModel.getMediaPlayer();
          final Duration totalDuration = mediaPlayer.getTotalDuration();
          totalDurationLabel.setText(formatDuration(totalDuration));
      }and register this listener on the mediaplayer
    mp.totalDurationProperty().addListener(new TotalDurationListener());I can image that the mediaplayer can "host" several media objects somewho and the listener is called as soon as a new media will be added to the mediaplayer in order
    the calculate the overall duration.
    When is this listener exactly called and is there no other ways to get the total length of the mp3 file?
    Here is a minimal example which should work without any external libs
    package de.hauke.schwimmbad.application.playground;
    import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
    import java.awt.event.ActionListener;

              System.out.println("---> " + media.durationProperty().get().toMillis());
              return media.getDuration();

              BorderPane root = new BorderPane();
              Scene scene = new Scene(root, Color.ALICEBLUE);
              fxPanel.setScene(scene);
    }The other question is why do I need a listener for the meta data to be changed in order to get the meta data?
    media.getMetadata().addListener(new MapChangeListener<String, Object>()Why can't I call something like
    media.getMetadata() --> returns a filled map?
    The metadata problem is not included inside the example from above.
    Sorry for my english but I hope everybody can understand the issue.
    Many greetings,
    Hauke

    The nature of the Media class is that it accesses it asynchronously. This means that when you create an instance of it, and then immediately query it, the data you want may not be available yet. This is all in the Javadoc, see the doc for Media:
    The media information is obtained asynchronously and so not necessarily available immediately after instantiation of the class. All information should however be available if the instance has been associated with a MediaPlayer and that player has transitioned to MediaPlayer.Status.READY statusSo you could associate the Media with a MediaPlayer, and then wait until it goes to the Status READY, and then read the length of the Media.
    As for your 2nd question, getMetadata() returns a Map. You can just loop through it:
      for(Map.Entry<String, Object> entry : media.getMetadata()) {
        // etc
      }However, the same restrictions apply as with Media -- you will probably need to wait before the information is available -- that's why the Listener approach works, because it will notify you as soon as the information is added to the map.

  • File problem in linux OS.

    hi,
    I am creating one jar file . In my program, when I click one survey menu in my GUI,it will collect information from remote device and store it in log file located LOG folder. In my case, I put one folder " Cal" and inside it I put myjar.jar file and that log (LOG) folder.
    In Windows, when I click survey menu in GUI, the log information automatically stored in log foder as survey.txt file. And also, i create one show dialog box to show where the log file located.
    my code is,
    String  ss=new String(" HIllo"+"loginfo" );
                     byte b[]=ss.getBytes ();
                           OutputStream f0=new FileOutputStream               ("LOG/survey.log",true);
                           f0.write(b);
                           f0.flush();
                           f0.close ();    the above code is file writing in txt file.
    for display dialog box,
    if(source==Survey)
                    File file = new File("LOG/Survey.log");
                    file = file.getAbsoluteFile();
                    javax.swing.JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(MainFrame, "The LOG FILE is stored at -- \t \t"+file);
                 }In windows, where can i install that Cal folder (inside it JAR file and LOG folder), and click that jar , all are working fine. The log file stored correctly inLOG folder and dialog box show the located path.
    eg. log file stored at D:/sbk/Cal/LOG/survey.log
    But my problem in linux.
    when i click survey menu, it will defaultly stored in root folder and log folder. Actually i am not creating LOG folder in root folder.
    I am changing file writer as , to store that JAR folder and want to store that log file in home directory.
    if(no_of_ssid!=null){
                    String  ss=new String(""HIllo"+"loginfo\n" );          May
                     byte b[]=ss.getBytes ();
                           OutputStream f0=new FileOutputStream ("/home/Cal/LOG/Survey.log",true);
                           f0.write(b);
                           f0.flush();
                           f0.close ();    but, now also that file stored in rot directory.
    what can I do.
    how can I store log file in home/Cal/Log folder in Linux.

  • Why am I getting "Can't write file"? from jsp

    I have the following code:
    public String OpenRAF(String fileName) {
    try {
    file = new File("http://www.domain/filename.prn");
    } catch (java.lang.NullPointerException npe) {

    try {
    raf = new java.io.RandomAccessFile(file, "rw");
    } catch (java.io.FileNotFoundException fnfe) {
    rtn = false;
    Why am I getting the "Can't write file http://www.domain/filename" from this jsp?
    I would like to open this file read,write and update it with the RandomAccessFile api, but I can't seem to get write permissions. I have granted 777 permissions on the file.
    Is this a Tomcat file permission issue or something?
    Thanks.

    Thanks,
    But I want to read,write to a file in the application Server. How do I get the path correct?
    I want to use something like java.io.RandomAccessFile("somepath", "rw");
    I should be able to access the filesystem somehow? The only way I could find the file was using the URL. Whenever I used a relative or absolute path, I could not access the file.
    How do I know what the filesystem path is on an application server (Tomcat 4.1) from a Jsp 1.4?
    Thanks again

  • File storing problem.

    hi,
    i create one project using netbeans and also, i create one jar file for it(Car.jar)
    In my project, i retrive information from remote device using snmp and store it in text file and show the path using dialog box as follows,
    File file = new File("LOGFILE/Survey.log");
                    file = file.getAbsoluteFile();
                    javax.swing.JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(CarFile.CarMain.CarMain, "The LOG FILE is stored at => \t \t"+file);In windows, where we put the project and LOGFILE folder, the log file stored and show the path in dialog box.
    But, in linux, when i try to get the information from remote device and store it in log file,
    it automatically stored in root.
    it doen't stored where i put the project jar and log file (i put jar and log ile in make folder).
    So, when i click survey, the function doen't retrive information.
    but, if i put the log file in root folder (i.e root/LOGFILE), the program correctly works.
    my need is, where i put the Car.jar and LOGFILE folder, the program must works and store the detail in log file proferly.
    what cani do.

    ok,Thanks
    It is working now.

  • Report Generation tool kit for MS office (Opening an existing excel file and appending to the bottom)

    I don't have any problems creating and filling an excel sheet with data. I use the New Report.vi, Easy Title.vi, and Easy Text.vi to create the file. I then save and dispose properly.
    What I don't seem to be able to do is open the exsting file and append data to the end of the sheet.
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    todd

    Hi Todd,
    You can do this by creating a new Excel report with the existing excel file path wired to the "template" input. Then use "Excel Get Last Row.vi" (located under Report Generation\Excel Specific\Excel General) to obtain the location of the last row. Then use that location to input new data into the file.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan

    Where do you suggest setting the temp directory:

    or in the xdo.cfg:

  • File does not exist on remote site, yet it does

    I have been trying to understand how Dreamweaver handles remote files in CS5.
    My server is setup as a remote server and a test server.
    I open the remote file, it offers to get dependencies, so I click yes.
    I click on Live view, then it tries to show me the following url
    http://my_site.com/public_html/path/to/my/file/file.php
    It should not put public_html in the path, and I did not specify this in my site setup. My root setting is /.
    Anyway, If I change the url manually, then it shows correctly. Then it offers to discover dunamically linked files, which I agree to.
    Now it tells me that 'Dynamically-related files could not be resolved because the site definition is not correct for this server'
    If I try to open one of the files that it has discovered, I am told that it is not on the disk, so would I like to 'get it', so I agree.
    Finally, I am told that 'Get operation failed since linked-file.php does not exist on remote site'
    I suspect that this is all to do with my site definition, but I fiddled with the settings and can't resolve this. I think that the whole problem goes back to Dreamweaver's insistance on putting public_html in the path, but I can't stop it doing so.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    ian

    Hi,
    Well, yes I did manage to fix the dynamically linked resources issue. As mentioned above, I did need to mention public_html in my Root Directory setting in server setup (silly of me).
    I had tried this at first, but it didn't work, as I had the server set as a test server and not a remote server, anyway, i now have it set as both and all is well.
    Except that, the first issue that mentioned is still with me: namely, dreamweaver mentions the public_html in the url path when on live view, which is not correct and I don't know where it is inferring this from. I can change it manually, but this doesn't seem right to me. Am I still missing a setting?
    In anwer to the questions:
    1) My setting (now) in the Root Directory setting in DW is: /public_html/
    2) My actual path on the server (that i mention in php scripts) is: /home/login_name/public_html//path/to/my/file/file.php
    [In the advanced settings of DW site setup on the Local Info page I have set Links relative to Document option, although it does not seem to make a difference when I change it to Site Root.]
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ian

  • [Solved] Error : The file or folder path /Probl?me 1 does not exist

    Hello,
    I encountered this error
    The file or folder <path>/Probl?me 2 does not exist
    while I was trying to open a directory already extracted from a zip file containing directories with special characters. In this case, it is a "è" that was misinterpreted as a "?".
    I searched the forums and on google, the solutions proposed do not work for me. Although, I have to deal with these files written in french, I would like to have my locale in english (US), with a system wide support for special characters.
    Attempt 1: Adding the option : iocharset=utf8 into the fstab, like this :
    fstab :
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
    none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
    /dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/24ba75ac-e52d-40eb-a599-83b394b500b2 /boot ext2 defaults 0 2
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/c797f409-00bc-479a-b4d6-ab49943f644b / ext4 defaults 0 1
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/668427a8-5f51-42bd-a316-fc7984bf5f4f /var ext4 defaults 0 2
    /dev/sda7 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/417cd1b7-8f06-414b-84d5-e8714d9646ab /home ext4 defaults 0 2
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/ef9aa00e-0515-4d7b-aa23-8096e787250d /usr ext4 defaults 0 2
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/17d401b7-2fc7-4d9f-8e17-657d86926d2e /tmp ext4 defaults,iocharset=utf8 0 0 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    /dev/disk/by-uuid/71e543b6-e06c-4b0e-b1e3-3b491ff1fefe /var/cache/pacman/repos ext4 defaults 0 2
    #/dev/sda12 /mnt/archive ext4 defaults 0 2
    #.host:/ /mnt/hgfs vmhgfs defaults 0 0
    This solution does not work, because after adding iocharset=utf8, in front or after a "defaults", after a reboot, while mounting the filesystem, there is the following error message:
    Mounting Locale Filesystem :
    mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,

    Attempt 2: Changing all the locale features in KDE and in /etc/rc.conf as well.
    $ vim /etc/rc.conf
    LOCALE="fr_CA.utf8"
    HARDWARECLOCK=""
    TIMEZONE="America/Montreal"
    KEYMAP="us"
    CONSOLEFONT=
    CONSOLEMAP=
    USECOLOR="yes"
    It is complicated to remove these directories. I had to use the inum to get precisely these directories before removing them.
    $ ls -il
    total 8
    1577566 drwxr-xr-x 2 [username] [username] 4096 28 jan 07:09 Probl?me 1
    1577573 drwxr-xr-x 2 [username] [username] 4096 28 jan 07:09 Probl?me 2
    $ find . -inum 1577566 -exec rm -i {} \;
    rm: impossible de supprimer « ./Probl\212me 1 »: est un dossier
    Note that the hypothetical character 'è' is represented has a '\212', a 'È' if seen as a extended ASCII character.
    These directories cannot be deleted this way :
    $ rm -r Problème\ 1
    rm: cannot remove `Problème 1': No such file or directory
    or
    $ rm -r ProblÈme\ 1
    rm: cannot remove `ProblÈme 1': No such file or directory
    What should I do to be make the operating system recognize those special character, and interpret them correctly ?

    I found a working solution, but better solution are also welcome
    I had to have fr_CA not only in utf8 but also in iso88591. I had to modify the /etc/rc.conf this way :
    LOCALE="fr_CA" <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
    HARDWARECLOCK=""
    TIMEZONE="America/Montreal"
    KEYMAP="us"
    CONSOLEFONT=
    CONSOLEMAP=
    USECOLOR="yes"
    To preserve the english US language system wide, I had to add the following line in the /etc/profile :
    # Allow french special character while in en_US
    export LANG=en_US
    The character misinterpreted by a "?" is now seen :
    as a "è" in dolphin
    as a "?" in the console
    It is now possible to access the folders.

  • TS3249 How can I delete an iMovie file reference to a server that no longer exists?

    I am using iMovie 11 and used to have a NAS that I've removed. Whenever I open iMovie, i get a prompt stating that the NAS server (name) no longer exists.  I thought I had moved all my project files to an external hard drive but I must have missed one.  I've tried deleting the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist file but this didn't stop the prompt.  The prompt happens every 5 seconds or so until I close iMovie.
    Is there a way to reassociate the missing file to my iMovie project?  When I clip on the "missing source clip" in the preview window, I cannot change the properties of the clip to reassociate it to the correct location.
    I am running OS X lion v 10.7.4, iMovie 9.0.8.

    Yeah, this is quite late. Here's how I think you can do it. Run Show Package Contents on the .rcproject file. Find the file simply called "Project". Make a backup copy, and then open it with TextWrangler or similar program*. Search for the path in the file, fix it, and save. Try it in iMovie again. (The version I have is 9.0.4).
    * TextWrangler allows you to edit binary XML files, which is what Project is. I'm sure there are other programs that can do the same. This one is free.
