File Sharing Server Connection Gone

I am the designated tech person in my office. We just switched our ISP to Verizon FIOS from a DSL line. No one in the office is able to connect to the server remotely anymore. The addresses in the connect box are the same. It works at the office but not away from the office. Where do I begin to try to solve this problem?

Sorry, but Mark's solution isn't going to help here.
No one in the office is able to connect to the server remotely anymore
In what way are you trying to 'connect to the server'? Are you talking web service? VPN? file service? mail? something else?
When you changed from DSL to FiOS your public IP address changed. Did you change your public DNS records to reflect the new address? If not, external users are going to trying to connect to the old DNS address and not the new FiOS one. Even if you have changed it, DNS can sometimes take hours to propagate across the internet.
In addition to setting the DNS to point to the new address, you'll likely also need to configure port forwarding on the Verizon router to permit the protocol(s) you want to allow into your network. By default, most routers block all incoming traffic.
Beyond that, there isn't a lot of detail here to go on. If the above doesn't fix it you'll need to post more detail, including the domain name so that others can check the DNS resolution from an external perspective.

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

  • Problems establishing a Shared Server connection

I am trying to establish a connection to a shared server on a test database. The database is 10.2.0.4 and runs on Solaris 10. Here are some setting for my init file, and I think the last two do not need to be set.
    # Shared Server
    dispatchers="(PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=DBA10XDB)"
    shared_servers=5
    shared_server_sessions=20
I connect from my client which uses a tnsnames.ora file and does NOT specify a dedicated server. Here is the result of LSNRCTL SERVICES:

    The command completed successfully
V$SESSION shows the connections to be DEDICATED. Any suggestions as to what I may be doing incorrectly? Reading all I can find on this seems to indicate all I need to do is have DISPATCHERS and SHARED_SERVERS set and then connections will automatically be shared server connections.

Thanks. Your post helped me get things straightened out. After changing my tnsnames file I was getting an ORA-12520. Hmmm. I then noticed the (SERVICE=DBA10XDB) on my DISPATCHERS parameter, which was there by default when Oracle configured the init file initially. I removed that and it worked.
Then I was able to get connections to the shared server with and without the SERVER=SHARED setting. I knew I had read that Oracle will default to shared server if not specified, but your post indicated that a client connection can be forced to use the shared server, even when no dispatchers are registered. I think mine was not registered to my instance due to the (SERVICE=DBA10XDB) setting. If there are no registered dispatchers the connection request is rejected.

  • Dedicated Server Connection Vs Shared Server Connection

    Hi Gurus,
I have few doubts regarding Dedicated Server Connection Vs Shared Server Connection -
    1) How do I know which connection mechanism is configured in my system.
    2) Which connection faster and reliable.
    3) Is there any risk to using shared server connection?
    4) Which concept is new comparatively?
    5) It is possible to restrict specific user for Dedicated Server Connection and other for Shared Server Connection in a same database.
    Regards,

    2) It is possible to restrict specific user for Dedicated Server Connection and other for Shared Server Connection in a same database. You might be able to do something like this by using the RULE parameter with cman, limiting specific users (via local security setups) to specific client IP's and forcing them to particular service names. This is a net services issue, so does not conflict with what Billy said. It assumes you control whether your users will query the db appropriately, too. Many apps don't do that right.

  • Personal File Sharing: Lost Connection

I'm trying to use my new miniStack external HD attached via Firewire to my Mac mini as a pseudo network drive. In other words, I want that drive available to my mini and my two iBooks. If I can get that working, I'd like it available to my XP box as well.
I have wireless internet via an Airport Express and cable modem throughout the house. All four computers are attached via wireless cards.
I've turned on personal file sharing on the mini using my administrator log in. I've also activated AppleTalk via the Airport settings in the Network preference settings.
I've also activated AppleTalk on my iBook and turned on personal file sharing.
All my Macs are running the latest version of OS X (10.4.7).
I restarted both machines after making the above setting selections. I then used the Finder on my iBook to search for the mini. I clicked on the Network icon, found 'servers', 'library', and the following folders: "home" which has my XP box readily accessible, "My Network" and "Workgroup". Each of these last has an icon for my mini.
When I double click on my Mini, it shows me all volumes on it, including my miniStack. I select one to connect to and get a beach ball followed by an error message saying "Server Connection Interupted: miniStack" and a single button marked 'disconnect'.
After I press the disconnect button (my only choice) I notice that personal file sharing on my mini is now turned off.
This exact same thing happens when I try to access the native internal HD on my mini so it isn't just the external stack that's the problem.
I've searched high and low through the fora here and can't find anything addressing this.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks and take care,
    Jeff

After much trial and error, I finally resorted to doing a Archive and Install on my mini. After doing so, everything works great. I still have no clue what the problem was but I now have no interest in finding out since it's working great.
Of note, the lost connection problem was unidirectional. I had no difficulties logging onto and accessing anything on either of my iBooks from my mini. Just the other way around.
    Take care,
    Jeff

  • File sharing server across campuses

Hi I am looking into setting up file sharing between college campuses for sports videos. However, instead of setting file permission levels that stay pretty constant, users will constantly be uploading new research and determining which users can access the files. So a user from campus A would upload a file and allow access to user B, but not user C. The next file may be allowed to be shared to user C but not B. These permissions will be changing on a regular basis--what would be the best way to manage this to allow users to manage who can access their specific content?
Crudely I was thinking this could be managed by creating a folder/drop box for each user and then the other users could all submit content to the individual drop boxes. However, my problem with this is that especially for video content this will create a lot of copies of the same files and thus take up unnecessary space. There should be a more efficient way to do this in my thinking. Thoughts?

I'm guessing you're thinking of setting up a youtube-ish service for multiple sites and multiple clients here, and, well, start thinking of the access control permutations when you hit ten or a hundred or a thousand clients, and start thinking about what sorts of network bandwidth you'll need to stream all that video. Hundreds and thousands of clients and tens of sites work rather differently than a dozen users in the same room with gigabit pipes. You should be designing your web-facing interfaces and your database and your data distribution models, and not thinking about individual files and directories.
You're basically going to be setting up your own access control and distribution model here, and once the clients are authenticated to the database, geographically local copies of the videos are then streamed to the clients. If there's any particular likelihood of scaling here, you should probably be looking at, for instance, hadoop or voldemort, or other choices.
Then there are discussions around whether you're going to be doing transcoding (probably yes), and the computes needed to run that.
You've got a learning curve ahead of you. Consider bringing in some help, if you can't find an existing package that gets you close to where you're going.
If, on the other hand, you're just doing something small, then I might look to use something akin to Drupal to control access to the files and to manage the general front-end "fun" that a web site has, though I don't know if there's a connection from that over to the Quicktime Streaming Server, or however you're storing video. That might require some custom coding.

  • I cant get a shared server connection

Hello, I configured the shared server option on my computer, but every time I connect, I get 'DEDICATED' for the server column in v$session. Can anyone tell me how to establish shared server connex from your own machine please?
I am connecting like sqlplus scott/[email protected]
and it connects back to my machine (I think) with no error msg, but still I am getting DEDICATED for server in v$session, it is driving me nuts.
    Thanks.

So when you're in an area with public and open wifi networks, you cannot go to settings/wifi/choose a network?

  • Airport Extreme - File Sharing with Connected Computers

    Hello
I have an Airport Extreme with a G5 and a MacBook Pro both connected to it via Cat5 cables. How can I use the Airtport as a liason to share files between the two?
    Thank you,
    Ryan

NEVERMIND. I figured it out very simply.
You just got to System Preferences > Sharing. Then you just turn on the file sharing service - even better the remote management.
This is great and INCREDIBLY easy.

  • Shared server connections.

we are running a third party application with an 11g database shared server configuration and OAS 10gR2. Dispatchers set to 10 and shared servers set to 100. When the database instance is started, the 100 shared server and 10 dispatcher sessions start up and I can see these processes with ps -ef. They show as ora_s0* processes and ora_d0* respectively.
At some point after the startup of the application, it establishes a connection pool of 100 sessions (10 per dispacher). The process Id of these sessions correspond to the pids of the dispatcher processes not the shared server processes.
The 100 sessions in the connection pool remain idle until a user logs on to the system. When a successful login is made, I see that about 8 of the idle sessions become active and remain so until the user finishes with the application and logs out.
    Questions :
    1. Is there a query I can do to show me the shared sherver sessions i.e. ora_s0* being used?
    3. Are the 100 sessions (in the connection pool) really the shared server sessions even though they show up with the pid of the parent dispatcher?
    2. I need to record the number of connections being made to the system over a period and how long each user is connected for, could you suggest the best method (including queries) of going about this task?
    Thank you.

I see only ash the option for you, else you need to have your own scheduled script/procedure that would gather that information.
    Thank you.

  • Data Guard Primary having shared server connections

    Hi fellows,
I am configuring dataguard from RAC primary to RAC standby. The RAC primary is using shared server mode. The primary server tnsnames.ora looks like this:
    HWPR =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = hwpr-vip1)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = hwpr-vip2)(PORT = 1521))
    (LOAD_BALANCE = yes)
    (CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = SHARED) <<<<< this is my concern
    (SERVICE_NAME = hwpr)
while documentation says that for dataguard dedicated server is required. so what changes do i need to do. Is it only required to changed the tnsnames.ora from shared to dedicated or any other init parameter is also required to be changed.

  • Shared Server Connection Problem On Rac

    Hii All
I configured dispatcher parameter in Rac environment as
    "alter system set dispatchers='(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=node1-vip.domain.com))(dispatchers=10) (session=75)' scope=both sid='RAC1';
but when I run lsnrctl services I see vip ip address instead of node1-vip.domain.com so I have connection problems because Client trying to access to server via internet through Nat ip address and listener replies requests vip ip address so client can not connect the server.
I can acces to server on DEDICATED connection.
    Have you idea ?

In document lsnrctl ouput shows host=node-vip But I cant see nor node1-vip.domain.com neither node2.domain.com just see node vip address That does not really matter - as the hostname is an alias for an IP address and as long as the hostname resolves to the correct IP address.
The issue (as I mentioned above) is that the external client needs to resolve these names to the NAT addresses. So what happens if you ping node1-vip.domain.com and node1-vip from the client? What happens when you telnet on the client to port 1521 and hosts node1-vip.domain.com or node1-vip ?
If this works and the client's Oracle connection does not, enable SQL*Net tracing on the client and look in the trace file for failed calls.
Also keep in mind that you would (by default) only have port 1521 NAT'ed. So should the client be redirected for a connection using a different port, it is unlikely that this port is NAT'ed - unless you're basically blindly NAT'ing all ports which would be unusual and risky.

  • Oracle shared server default connection

We are currently trying to use shared server on an Oracle 11.1.0.7 standard edition database.
We don't have any problem regarding parameters or performance yet. We can connect either with dedicated or shared connection.
Our problem or issue is with tnsnames.ora.
    trdb =
    (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = X.X.X.X)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = orcl)
We do not specify if this connection is shared neither dedicated. Connection defaults to dedicated and we would like to force that users connect to a shared server connection.
It would be really usefull to avoid having to go client by client on remote sites. We do no have any centralized management tool to change the file (not on remote sites).
We could, of course make the application to distribute a new file, but since every client is unique, it could be risky.

Try to use SERVICE_NAME instead of SID in tnsnames.ora and make sure this service is mapped to a dispatcher in database init. file.
    Example with 11.2.0.1:
    1. DISPATCHERS parameter
    SQL> show parameter dispatchers
    NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
    dispatchers                          string      (PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=DB112XDB)
    max_dispatchers                      integer2. TNSNAMES.ORA:
    $cat tnsnames.ora
    DB112 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
       (ADDRESS_LIST =
         (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = lx01.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
       (SERVICE_NAME = DB112XDB)
    )3. Test with SQL*Plus:

  • ORA-03113 end-of-file on communication channel with shared server config

    Hello,
I've got a very strange problem.
We have a new installed 10.2.0.3 RAC database with 2 instances on Win 2003 R2. IIS is running some very simple and small web-sites with OO4O Connection Pooling. When I set the pool to use shared server connection sometimes the connection fails with ORA-03113. This error is reproducible sometimes when I connect through SQL*PLUS or with Quest Toad.
When I connect through dedicated server this error never occurs and everything works as expected.
    I set up ASMM (sga_target=1500M), so this shouldn't be a large_pool issue.
    Other parameters are shared_servers=2, max_shared_servers=8 and dispatchers=2.
alert.log doesn't show any error, no instance is dying.
Anny issue on how to resolve this? I did not want to switch back to dedicated config.
    Sven

you need to narrow your problem domain
Does it happen with single node?
Is it a RAC issue or is it a DB / hardware architecture issue?

  • Originating File Sharing Mini with Leopard G3 Beige and Vice Verse.

I guess a sub-heading of this would be connecting to the newest Mac from an older one.
Here is a problem: I can set up the G3 Beige (running Jaguar) as a file sharing server and very easily connect to it from the a Mac Mini by using top menu Go>Connect to server.
Where i run into what seems to be impossible is to do the same thing from the G3. Nothing seems to establish a connection. It is always rejected with a no connection error message.
Both machines are wirelessly connecting through a router. The mini with internal airport and the G3 beige using an external D-link bridge. Both work fine accessing the internet.
Main reason i wanted to do this is that my Shared Printer is on the Mini and i wanted to print something from the Beige to it.
Can anybody help, or am i attempting the impossible.

DEAR Grant Bennet-Adler: Thank you for your last reply. I'm not sure exactly what i did but I was able to connect. To answer your questions:
IP Addresses are similar. One is ...101 and the other is ...102.
    My router uses DHCP.
What seemed to fix the problem was going to security>firewall on the MINI and checking
    o Allow all incoming messages.
Not sure what ODS Agent.app is but it is highlighted as allow incoming vs blocked.
Both computers "allow personal file sharing"
On the G3 i was able to connect after a bit of trial and error: On the G3, when i "Connect to Server" i am presented with three choices of servers, one of which is the G3 itself--I wish the system wouldn't remember irrelevance.
One of the choices is OK and when i checkit i get the ID and Password Dialog--again for ID i am presented with the MINI's name and not my user (Admin) name.
Change that, type in the password and i am given a list of drives on the folder. That includes any opened from a .img.
After i open one i then see it on my desktop and can get into it.
One slight problem: Once into one, i can;t go back to "go to server" to open more. I get timeouts, error messages and other stuff. I have to start over. That also appears to be to include disconnecting the connection to the G3 server that gets set up on the MINI.
    Regards:
p.s I hven't gotten into Shared Printer although i saw it did show up in the Firewall dialog.I think i have the Canon MP470 Software on the G3 as well as the Mini but i will have to check on it.

  • Sutdown of a Database in Shared Server Modus

    Hi,
I have set up today a database called "db03" in Shared Server Mode. After the installation everything looked fine beside that there was no entry in the listener.ora file for the Database. Anyways I added the entry to the listener.ora and was able to connect to it via the command
    sqlplus "sys@db03 as sysdba".
But when I tried to shut it down it gave me the error message
ORA-00106: cannot startup/shutdown database when connected to a dispatcher
    back.
So I have checked in several forums and someone said the solution would be to connect to the Database via dedicated connection and there for a entry in the tnsnames.ora file must be added.
    (server=dedicated)
I added the line to connection descriptor and if I connect back to the database it really works and I am able to shutdown the database.
But is that really the best and Oracle recommended what to shutdown a Database running in shared server mode ????
    Thanks Marcus

There is a note in the administrator's guide that you have to have a dedicated connection to be able to shut down the database...
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96521/start.htm#7871
When a database is running in shared server mode, that just means that connections can be made to a shared server, not that all connections should connect to a shared server. When you are doing certain types of tasks, such as reporting, you are frequently better off requesting a dedicated connection. When you are shutting down the database, you have to request a dedicated session.
If you expect some of the sessions started from a particular machine to need dedicated connections and other sessions to require shared server connections, there are options other than modifying the TNS entry, but 99 times out of 100, anyone who will be shutting down a database will always want a dedicated connection.
