Files and apps not opening by 2x click in Finder window?

Folks:
No situation on my older G4 iBook running 10.4.11: I can't get files or applications to open or launch from a finder window by clicking on them; they do open by highlighting and then command + o. And any apps I have in the Dock launch by single click. I t seemed to begin when I tried to "Save as" a Appleworks file into a .doc format which caused AW to crash--I did that several times. When I re-launched AW it said, "your settings have been changed, do you want to keep the new settings or the old?" I clicked on "new" . . . still couldn't get the AW file into a Word format so I went to PDF. Seems like after that the inability to open all files or launch apps from the Finder windows. Ran ONyx Maintenance . . . re-starte, didn't seem to help. Any ideas appreciated--is this a "known item"?

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
If that doesn't do it try this.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
Reset Launch Services...

Sounds like OS X has lost the association between Pages and its files.
Start by quitting Pages, then going to Finder.
In Finder, locate a .pages file. Click on it (once), then press command-I (eye, not one) to Get Info.
In the Info window that opens, expand the Open With section.
In this section, click on the pop-up menu and choose Pages (even if Pages is already shown).
Click the Change All button to associate all files with the .pages extension with Pages.
Close the info window.
Double click any .pages file to check that Pages will now launch and open the file.

Interesting. This sort of thing is more common on Windows systems. Taken at face value, one of the iTunes program files (one of the Japanese language resources) is damaged.
I'd try running your Disk Utility over your startup disk. Does it find/repair any damage? If so can you empty your trash and reinstall your iTunes successfully now?

What do you mean by "all files", surely only one category of files got their default open program changed.
Choose the affected files, right click on an individual file, and "open with",...change to default program.
For a group, right click > show info > open with > change ALL
If more than one group of files has had its default opening program changed, a time machine roll-back would be the easy option. Do you have a TM backup?

Final cut trial is stuck reading a file and will not open

I just had the trial version loaded today and it worked jusst once. On my second attemt it was stuck opeing a movie filethat was over 30 minutes. The other movie files that were successfuly opened were less than 2 minutes long. Please help. I would like to buy the fullversion but I want to experiment with the trial first. Any ideas on how to go forward. Apple Care does not support the trial version.

here is the screenshot when i launch fcpx. it says "reading new event" at the bottom of the screenshot ( this is my original imovie event). the startup screen just hangs forever and i need to force quit. i have tried launching several times and the same thing happens. the original file was imported into imovie with no problems from a panasonic gh2 and when i launched the trial fcpx i imported the imovie event library and this is where i am stuck. i hope this info helps and you can advise what may be going on here. thanks

When trying to download a pdf, it only shows up as a 20kb file and will not open.

When I try and download a pdf file or open it from a site, it only shows the file as 20Kbs, I know it is larger than that, and I can open other pdfs that are already on my computer. Just not new ones.

I don't think there is an "official" maximum file size to be able to use on the iPad, but I can tell you from personal experience that Excel files that are 6 or 7 MB in size have crashed my iPad original version. If all other PowerPoint files have opened successfully for you, the file may be too large - or the file could be corrupt as well.

Icons disappearing and apps not opening

FCP, Motion, Soundtrack, Pages, Keynote, Numbers won't open but other apps will like Word, Live Type etc. Also, clicked on Pages and Keynote in dock and they disappeared but the pop up of their name still is there and click again and the icon comes back. Did disk utility and reinstalled iWork 08. Still same problems. Tried to do software update but it keeps quitting on me. Says it's downloading but eventually stops and doesn't complete task. PSCS6 no longer recognizes my CR2 files and will not open. Using Canon 5DMark III with updated Camera Raw . It has worked before but now won't open files from this camera.

I have been able to open files from this camera before but still checked for latest Camera Raw download. Still won't open files from this camera. Opens files from my 60D just fine. I downloaded the latest and it has worked before. What the heck is going on?

Glad to be of help. But I'm curious (not critical of what you are doing) to know why so many people like to use Nikon Transfer to transfer their files to the computer. It is still necessary to import them into Lightroom. And, from my perspective, it seems simpler and maybe even a little quicker to use the Lightroom import dialog. I have Nikon cameras, and have never even installed the Nikon Transfer utility. What is so unique about it?

How do I migrate my extensive ipad files and apps from my old iMac to my new windows machine?

I had to go to a windows machine. All of my stuff, apps, books, music, pictures, etc. is on my iMac. Is there any way to gracefully move the information from the iMac to the windows machine? It's about 60 GB.

If all your data is on your iTunes library, follow the steps of this site to transfer your library to a PC with an external disk > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751 You have to do the "Restoring your iTunes Library backup" step on your PC.
Apart from that, if you have got more data you want to transfer, you can put it in the external disk, too. You must do this because there isn't an app to migrate files from a Mac to the PC

I've never used this feature to ask a question. Pardon not knowing etiquette and such. When I click on Creative Cloud logo/icon on my desktop, the indicator for time passing goes for a few seconds and stops, but CC app not opening.
CC app used to work on this same computer a few months ago. No changes to operating system. Photoshop is still working. Just wanted to download Lightroom and perhaps begin learning it, but to no avail.
Tried to look for a way to reinstall Adobe CC, but it says I already have it.
Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Double-click in Files panel will not open a file. Instead
alert message appears (I will translate from Czech): "Design notes
are not allowed for this file. If you want to use Design notes...".
I do not want use Design notes, I want to open a file from File
Panel.
The same issue is when opening by right-click/Open. The only
(and unconfortable) way to open a file from Files panel is to
right-click/Open in program/Dreamweaver, this works.

I have clean installation of up to date CS3 Design Premium
(Version 9.0 build 41) on WinXP SP2. Previous version of DW (v8)
worked fine in this way. Associations in system are set OK, I
think, because double-clicking in my file manager really opens for
examle PHP files in DW.

Also Drag & Drop from Files panel is not functioning.
Sometimes neither alert appears, simply nothing happen.
Note: I am trying usual files like PHP or HTML files, but

Can not open JPEG files and can not create JPEG files from other software (For example from Solidworks).
When I try to right click on a JPEG, a notice window appears written: "Windows Explorer has stopped working - Windows is
checking for a solution to the problem" and then the notice box disapears, the desktop appears and I can continue working.
From the other side - If I try to save as JPEG a screen of Solidworks (like a view of a part) the Solidworks falls but the JPEG
is created (I can see its name in the directory I created it).
I can open the JPEGS with the Paint software if I want but not with the Windows Photo Viewer.
I have the feeling that the Windows Photo Viewer disapeared from my computer - just a feeling.
I will appreciate your assistance.
