Files arranged by date added, but changing file name changes date added

I've got my Downloads folder set to view (in the Finder) by "date added", a very useful feature. However, if I change a file name, the "date added" changes to that new time, and "date modified" stays the same as it was. This doesn't make sense to me... isn't date added just that, when it was added to the folder? Why would this happen? Any workarounds or suggestions?

You should use the 'File/Directory Info' functionality.
This will return the last modificatoin of the file.

  • Need to add date/time stamp to file name without time change creating new files

We have setup our application to save data once a trigger event occurs. We also need the date/time stamp as part of the file name. We used Format Date/Time String and concatenated it into the file name. It all works good, but as the time changes (seconds, minutes, etc.) it causes the Write to File to create a new file with the new filename. Is there a way to create the file and save/latch/buffer the time in the file name so that it doesn't create a new file for every second?
I've attached a shot of the relevant part of our VI. It's all in a big while loop. The data save is in a case/switch so that when it is triggered it starts saving. (The for loop is to split the data up
into 4 different files). Like I said, it all works except new files are created every second as the time changes instead of just putting it all in one file with the initial time in the file name.

I need a loop in order to use a shift register. I cannot stop the outer while loop (because it would stop the hardware from collecting data), and I cannot add loops inside which bogs down the processor to where the app stops. I've attached a simpler version of my VI which illustrates the problem. While the button is pressed (the trigger) it should save the data (in this case just cycle numbers) into one file with the initial date/time. But, you can see that it creates 1 file/second. I tried using shift registers, but without adding extra loops I can't see how to do it. Thanks

  • Export copy changed original file name & date

    Photoshop Elements 10.
I received a digital frame for Christmas.  In order to populate the card, I used the Export as new file, but to copy, not to move.  To fit the files, I had the pictures resized, and to simplify the copies, I had the copies renamed.  the card ended up with what I wanted, but I was left with a big surprise.  The originals had also been renamed.  I can live with that, but I'm not happy.  However, the renaming of the files also touched the file dates, so now I have nearly 5,000 pictures from over 12 years all with toady timestamps.
I notice that the EXIF dates (picture taken on) are all still there.  Is there a way to set the file dates to the EXIF dates?
Okay - added notes after my shock.    First of all, files names of the originals were not modified; I just choose a poor folder to look at, and those files names happened to start at xxx0001.  My bad.
And, while all the pictures I exported/copied were touched and their file dates changed, most of them are still correctly dated in the Elements organizer.  It appears that only those real early files, taken with my first digital camera, which did not have a an EXIF date to begin with, have all been shifted in the organizer to the date/time when the export/copy was made.
So, while nearly 5,000 files have had their dates changed, in the organizer it is only a couple of hundred that have shifted.
    A) why in the world did these shifts happen?
    B) for those with EXIF dates, any suggestion on correction?

While a script would probably be best, photoshop 7 requires
you download a scripting plugin which may or may not install
in photoshop 7 depending on your version.
You can probably do what you want with actions. The file naming part
is not hard, but i have a couple of questions about the cropping.
Are all the images the same size and are the crops in the same position for each?
In other words on the P crop (200x250), is the crop in the same position on each
    image or different for each?

    DECLARE @dt AS VARCHAR(26)

Have this appended to a filename like: log_01-15-2015.  Don't know what to add to SQL code to get the get the time and append time in hours, min, sec. like:  log_01-15-2015_10:01:33

    EXEC master..xp_cmdshell @bcpCommand
I am trying to append to the file created with the date a time stamp but when appending the time part for the filename results aren't creating the file.  If it's just doing the date part then it is working. Any idea what is wrong?

Since you added ":" to the file name, the file name is not valid. You can change ":" to "-".

  • I can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name

can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name. My original external has an error and needs to be reformatted but I dont want to lose this informations its my entire Itunes library.

Sounds like the source drive is formatted as case sensitive and the destination drive is not. The preferred format for OS X is case insensitive unless there is a compelling reason to go case sensitive.
Why can't you change the filename? Is it because the source drive is having problems?  If so is this happening with only one or two or a few files? If so the best thing would be to copy those over individually and then rename them on the destination drive.
If it is more then you can do manually and you can't change the name on the source you will have to reformat the destination as case sensitive.

  • Can I script the changing of creation date, using the file name?

Normally people are doing this in reverse, but let me paint the picture.
I pulled 204 video files from an old HDD based JVC camera.  JVC records in .MOD format which iPhoto won't import.  I imported them into iMovie just fine, and iMovie even set the file name to clip-2007-11-04 04;42;29.mov which is great, but it now has a new creation date of whatever date I imported it.  Which then causes problem when I want the videos stored in iPhoto and sorted appropriately by creation date.
I've used the application "A Better Finder Attributes 5" to individually edit the creation and modify, but I'm sure I don't want to do this 203 more times, as you can't just type in the date and time, you have to type in each part of the date/time, or select it on a calendar.
I've used the application "Name Changer" to batch convert the file names to the format YYYYMMDDhhmm which would be helpful if I were going to use the terminal command touch -t, but again I don't want to have to type it in 203 more times, plus drag and drop the file into finder to populate the location.
Now, if I were more handy with automator, or maybe some (any) scripting language this would be easy peasy.  I'd batch rename all the files to the YYYYMMDDhhmm.mov and then have a script that just took the file name, passed that to touch -t along with the file location, and a few seconds later, they would all be done!
Anybody have any suggestions to how I can do this, and tips to what commands to use or ANY advice?  I'm more than happy to RTFM, but I have no idea which manual to read!
    Thanks

If your file names are precisely as you have written, this script will do what you want.
Copy the script into an AppleScript Editor document, select one or more files in a Finder window, return to the AS Editor and press Run.  Note: you will need to provide your password when the script runs.
Make sure you have a backup of any files you are working on (try using duplicates first, perhaps). The script has no error handling.

  • Changing File Names w/o Reading Data?

    Hi All,
I'm trying to get Labview to change the name of files in a directory,
without having to read the data.
I'll have a variety of data sets (text, binary, PDF files, etc), and
    would like to rename them.
Any hints? I tried using the "open/create/replace file.vi" by opening
the file, read the file, close it, create a new file, write it, close
it, but it doesn't work. I've also tried "copy" primitive under the
advanced file functions, but only get new directories created with
files in them. The following is what I got when I used it:
For example, the directory “c:\stuff” , will have files
    "file1.aaa, file2.BBB and file3.ccc", if I want to rename
“file1.aaa” into the file named "1file.AAA" by using the
"copy" primitive (in the Advanced File Functions), then I get a folder
called "1file.AAA" with the three files, "file1.aaa, file2.BBB and
    file3.ccc", in them.
I can manipulate directories, copy files into new ones, but not rename
    files.
    Kind regards,

Yes... I figured out what I was doing wrong. Using the "Copy"
primitive, I was including the file name AND path, which was read as a
new folder with the name of the file. If I remove the path, it will
copy the files to the same directory, with the name I wanted.

  • Scripting a file name change as a data merge element.

My goal of the work being done with InDesign is to utilize the Data Merge functionality of InDesign and the, already available, ability to create a new document per record in your data source where the docuement name is changed based on data contained in the data source.
A very simple example of this would be the following:
    EXAMPLE
    ======================
Given the following data source in excel:
    First_Name
    Last_Name
    ResultingFileName
    George
    Smith
    c:\A45.pdf
    Mary
    Lopez
    c:\C99.pdf
    Steve
    Barns
    c:\tmp\XM96TR.pdf
Along with a simple two text box InDesign documents, I would perform a standard data merge with First_Name linked to one text box and Last_Name linked to another.  By setting the “Record Limits Per Document” to 1, I would end up with three different documents.  By default, the documents would be named Untiltled-1, Untiltled-2 and Untitled-3.
Untitled-1 would contain George and Smith.  Untitled-2 would contain Mary and Lopez and Untitled-3 would contain Steve and Barns.
At this point in time, I would run the new created script, which would do the following:
                Rename Untitled-1 to A45 and/or save Untitled-1 as C:\A45.pdf
                Rename Untitled-2 to C99 and/or save Untitled-2 as C:\C99.pdf
                Rename Untitled-3 to XM96TR and/or save Untitled-3 as c:\tmp\XM96TR.pdf
I am open to modifying the manner in which the data merge source is created.  For example, separating the path and the file name into separate columns.  In addition, I am flexible in putting preset information and/or file save types into the data merge document.
Please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
I think it’s better to use an XML-based approach for your task.
I’ve never scripted Data Merge process, but I don’t see a straightforward way of doing it. May be you can create the 3rd textbox on pasteboard or a non-printing layer, which will contain the file path from ‘ResultingFileName’ field, and the contents from which can be used for naming & saving the current file and exporting it to pdf-file. But this approach is so clumsy.
Instead, you’d better to keep your data in excel file, or even better Access or some other database program.
Export the data from it in XML-format.
Then import it to an InDesign file and process it by script. XML support is very powerful in InDesign: you can process your data by xml-rules. I once made a script for a newspaper, which processed data for classified ads. The script applied all formatting, changed colors for different headings and placed images.

  • Applescript to take a file name element to change Date Created

This so beyond me but I have been led to believe is can be done. Can anyone help me please?
I have thousands of archive files. ALL of these files' names start with the date in dd-mm-yy format. eg. 31-01-11 File Name.pdf or 25-12-09 Filename-02.pdf
I would like to be able to drag a folder onto an application and for that app to search through the folder and all sub-folders, for these files and change the files' Date Created to the date at the start of the filename.
This feels so easy to type but I fear much more complicated to do however I do thank you very much in anticipation for your help.
    Best wishes
    John

    Hello
Here's something you might try if the problem is still open.
It uses SetFile(1) command in Developer Tools, which you need to have intalled.
    cf.
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/m an1/SetFile.1.html
It can set creation date to any date between 1970-01-01 to 2038-01-18 inclusive.
Simple check for date in file name is implemented so that error log is written to a log file on desktop when given date is considered invalid or SetFile raises error.
    One thing to note.
It will process both files and directories under given directory tree in order to process package file. But it is not smart enough to leave the package contents alone, which means if a package contains a file or directory with name matching the pattern, it's creation date will be also changed.
Minimally tested under OSX 10.2.8 at hand.
But NO WARRANTIES of any kind. Please use it on test folder first.
    Good luck,
    H

  • How can I have uploaded pictures to iPhone or iPad be sorted by file name. Used to be able to based on their folders, but it no longer works and puts pictures in random order, I guess by date, which doesn't work for me. Need them by file name.

Using windows. In the past I was able to have the picutres sorted in files and by file name and that is how they showed in the phone or pad. Not long ago one of the itune updates changed so it sorted by date and the the another update changed so it went by file name. Well when I got a new computer and updated itunes it won't load pictures in correct order. Is there an option I'm missing or is this an option that Apple should have for how you want pictures sorted?

  • A script for adding the current date to file name?

I am working in Indesign CS3. I frequently save file as PDFs into a designated folder. I was hoping for help in writing a script that would apply the current date to the end of the file name, when saved into this folder. Some days, I save the same file several times, into this folder. I was also hoping there was a way to add a date and version, for example "filename_2.25.11(1).pdf" Is this possible? Can someone help me?

ok, I ended up with this test routine:
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
    tell application "Finder"
    repeat with this in added_items
    my checkifopened(this)
display dialog (name of this) as text

    end tell
    end adding folder items to

    end if
    end repeat
    end checkifopened
this is a folder action that tests if the added file is still opened by an application... there is no delay between each test-loop since lsof takes some time to execute...
And after adding a timeout (just in case) to this function the final script looks like this:
on adding folder items to thefolder after receiving added_items

  • When I download files, firefox is adding " .part " to the file name and the file won't open, but if i back the .part out, it opens fine.

Firefox seems to be adding " .part " to the file names of files I downoad. Here's an example:
    YuT9iNv8.pdf.part
I cannot open this file because it can't find an application.
If I back out the .part, I get a box asking if I want to change the extension to .pdf I check yes, and everything works fine. It doesn't happen with other browsers (Safai).

I get the error message saying the file could not be downloaded due because there is no enough disk space.
How large is your HD and how much space do you have left?
