Final Cut Reinstall Issue

Ok, so I have Final Cut Pro Studio, 2.0. It kept freezing on my computer, so I decided to reinstall. Now, after the reinstall, it keeps saying that I only have 512 MB or RAM on computer (I have 2 GB of RAM) and even though I press the button for the progam to run anyway, it just shuts down and won't work. Help!

Your RAM is either dead or incorrectly seated (loose). Let's hope it is the latter.
Shut the computer down, remove the power cord and open the side door. Pull each RAM chip, wipe the contacts gently with a dry cloth such as those used for cleaning spectacles. Use a soft brush like a camera lens cleaner to remove any dust. Run the brush gently through the RAM slots. Reinsert the chips until the grippers click into place. Restart the computer.

Final Cut Pro issues in Lab environment

Ok so this one has me completely buggered.
I manage about 6 Mac Pros in a small TV Studio/Editing lab at a university. The Mac Pros are managed with an Xserve running server 10.6.2, using Open Directory for account management. All network accounts use a network Home folder, so any machine can use the same account and settings. The same server also manages a 25 machine iMac lab environment.
Each semester, we wipe the Mac Pros clean an reinstall the OS and Final Cut Studio. Last semester, the Mac Pros were upgraded to 10.6, and Studio 3 and we had no issues. This semester, a fresh installation of 10.6 was installed, as well as fresh Studio 3.
Now this is the problem we are having. Final Cut Pro 7 will not correctly create .fcp project files when users are logged in with their network server accounts. If you save the project to the desktop, or anywhere else in the Home folder, it creates a .fcp file, seemingly normal. But after the project is closed, the .fcp will not open again. Further more, a quick file size check shows the .fcp files are zero KB. Opening with Textedit shows an empty document, not even a single bit of data shows up.
But, Final Cut Pro 7 will create .fcp files perfectly fine on the local disk, or firewire drives. Local accounts also work fine. This problem only happens on network homes.
This is severely hampering the workflow for students using these editing stations, as they can't use their network home folders to save any data in Final Cut.
The strangest part, is it worked fine last semester. The same machines were running 10.6 and Studio 3, and the server has not been changed at all.
Any clues?

I didn't checked before but i solved thanks to your post... for some strange reason, the French language that i don't use, appeared in my language preference pane. I just added the English, and moved/deleted the French after it and FCP became English again!

Leopord and final cut 2 issues

I bought a family pack of Leopord and we are curious as to whether there are any issues with it and some 3'rd party software. My son owns a MacPro Tower and is finishing film school. He is using Final Cut 2 suite which comes bundled with Motion and other programs. Should he wait to load it on his. I know I had issues with my intel 20 in . I got the blue screen of death and had to take it in to load it properly and then I still had issues with login using my original password etc. Are there fixes to these now?

Final Cut Exorting issues

I am having an issue with Final Cut lately. When I export a Quicktime movie file using Current Timeline settings, and then I bring it back in to Final Cut onto the same timeline, it requires rendering. This occurs regardless of if the Movie is self contained, or a reference Quicktime...
The specific problem it is causing me at the moment is this:
We shot a concert with HVX200s to P2 in 720 P HD. This means that every 10 minutes or so, I have a new clip from the same camera. The concert is split into two approx 45 minutes sections. To make a multi clip with just one track per camera, I was editing each camera onto a timeline, making each timeline all begin at the same point. Then I would export each camera's timeline to a NON-self contained Quicktime file. Bring these back in to Final Cut, and you have each camera in one clip, ready to make a multi-clip.
I have used this approach before (in previous point releases of Final Cut) with no problem. Now however, when I select the clips to make a multi-clip, Final Cut cheerily informs me that it cannot make these clips into a multi-clip because the frame sizes of the clips differ... ?!? I have triple checked everything and they do not differ in the Item settings view of Final Cut, nor do they differ if opened in Quicktime and compared via the Movie Properites viewer... Furthermore, when these clips are dropped on a timeline of the same settings, or even the timeline they were exported off of, some of them require rendering and some do not. It seems Final Cut believes with all it's might that these clips really do have differing frame sizes even though I can't find that they do!!!
I am having this problem in both 5.1.2, and 5.1.3...
If anyone has an answer to this perplexing problem it would be much appreciated.
O, and also if anyone has a better way to handle the multi-clip issue that would be great too (why can't we edit multi-clips in a similar fashion to a sequence? So if we have a need to span several clips in one track of a multi-clip like I need to, we could!)

IMovie shared drive events - Final Cut Pro Issue

I've been trying to import my imovie events into Final Cut Pro X - couple of problems so far.
1. My events on the mounted shared drives don't get imported
2. When I look to save new events I only have the mac HD as the save location - doesn't show the external drive
Oddly enough on both of the above, the events show up in iMovie as events on the shared drive, and I am allowed to share new events onto the external shared drive.
Any advice on what I can do?

Color to Final Cut Pro issue

Hello all,
I've had an odd issue with color and Final cut today.
I just finished editing a multi-cam project which I sent over to color. I made all my adjustments and sent it back to FCP without any problems. However, some of the clips are now 'black' or 'void' of footage.
Looking at it closer it appears that the particular multi-cam angles is now void of content. The odd thing is I don't know why some clips are affected and other not, plus, when it goes black, it does so for exactly 13 frames every time at the start of the clip!

Sounds like you are having issues with your renders. Did you render (from queue) as Uncompressed 10 bit or ProRes?
I just finished the cert. course for Color today, and after a few days of delving into the software, it seems a tad "buggy". As a professional editor for 14 years, I certainly wouldn't trust taking a multi-cam edited seq into Color at this point. The less complicated the timeline in FCP, the less work and potential issues enter into the Color scenario. I don't think, at this point w regards to this version of Color, I would venture the risk in sending a multi-cam seq to it.
We discovered several small issues and bugs in the software and also their corresponding work-arounds over the last few days.
Altogether, however, this software is amazing and was originally a SGI program with a steep price tag. The fine tuned grading, color keying and tracking functions are amazing. I'm looking forward to a more streamlined osx like interface.

Animated gifs in final cut - transparency issue

does anyone have experience importing transparent gifs into final cut?? i used to be able to do it fine in final cut 5, but now in version 7, instead of converting the transparency to one solid color, it converts it keeps changing colors, so i can't chroma-key it away... the main problem is that i have a session which is comprised of a bunch of animated gifs... it all looked fine in version 5 cause the transparent parts were converted to a solid color, which i chroma-keyed away. now it looks like crap and i don't want to have to re-do all of that work. any idea would be much appreciated. thanks!

You'd want to make some careful tests and examine your settings even more carefully because FCP shouldn't be converting anything to anything else unless you tell it to.

Capturing Footage from Canon HV40 to Final Cut Express Issue

I own a Canon HV40 camcorder and shot a short film using the 24p HDV 24F Cine Mode feature (for film look). I've captured the footage into Final Cut Express, but the footage is running at a faster speed. I know this may have something to do with frames per second in the user preferences section.
Does anyone have the concrete solution to this problem and will I have to recapture my footage under a different setting?
Please advise.

Hi Eric,
FCE only supports frame rates of 60i, 30p, 50i, and 25p. To edit 24p footage you'd need Final Cut Pro.

Sequence compressor settings XDCAM EX 720p in final cut = render issues

sequence compressor settings set to XDCAM EX 720p in final cut renders a clip and gives an unwanted speedup of clip. I am using XDCAM EX 720p footage. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Try this; duplicate your sequence, select all and delete. Try editing one of your clips into the sequence. Does fcp tell you that your sequence settings do not match your clip settings?
If not, I don't have a clue (not the first time).

Final Cut / Flash issue

Hi,
I am converting a .mov file in to an .flv. I created the .mov in final cut. When I convert it in Flash , I am getting a movie that many of the moving images have static lines. It's not a smooth conversion. I know it's possible to make this conversion with a clean exact replica of a .mov file but I am not getting it. Any help would be much appreciated Thanks

Export it as and H.264 mp4.. and just change the file extension to .FLV - Flash reads those perfectly fine.
Or if you have Flash CS4 it gives you the option to export an FLV right out of FCP.

Final Cut Export Issue

I recently cut together a video on final cut x (version 10.0). When I select the Export Video option under the share tab, absolutely nothing happens. Any suggestions?

Version 10.0 of FCPX is not compatible with Mavericks. You need to upgrade FCPX to version 10.1.1 which is the latest.

Final Cut Express issues: Video and no audio

Ok.. sorry about before. I posted in someone elses message, for that I'm sorry.
My name is Justin Smith. I'm a freelance videographer out in Kansas. I have a brand new Macbook Pro. I'm shooting with a Dvx-100. I took my camera and tried to import video into Final Cut Express. When the short video clip was finished capturing, I tried putting it to the timeline, but only the video was added. So I have video, no audio and a bunch of questions. How do I get my orginal audio from the tape onto the timeline? Also, I have a question about importing audio from say Itunes. I can import the song fine, But when I lay the track down on the timeline, I'm getting a continuous beep noise. I read the FAQ and it told me I have to convert the track to AIFF? How do I do this?

As for importing audio from iTunes, yes, you must convert it to AIFF first. iTunes can do this unless you purchased the songs from the iTunes Music Store. If you did, they are protected AAC files and won't convert. There are ways to do it but since it most likely violates the copyright, no one on this forum can legally tell you how to do it.
If they are not protected, then go to iTunes preferences, select the Advanced icon at the top and click the Importing tab. Select AIFF encoder from the "Import Using" popup menu and make sure the settings are 48khz. Then select the song from the library and choose (from the menu bar) Advanced->Convert Selection To AIFF. A new music file in AIFF format will appear in your library.
Another way is to use Quicktime Pro (the paid version of Quicktime). Open the music file in Quicktime, choose Export and select AIFF, 48Khz, 16bit for the format. Again, this won't work if its an iTunes protected file.

Final Cut Key issues

I just bought a new mac book pro and i had installed my two final cut express CD keys on my moms home computer and my old laptop last year. Am i going to have to buy a whole new final cut express or can i get a single key for cheaper or what's the deal with that does anyone know?

Final Cut playback issues...help please!

I've been running FCP7 on my Mac Pro for over a year now with no issues.
Recently I purchased a pair of Dell U2410 Monitors to work on, and this is when I really began to notice playback issues in FCP. Although I just started noticing it with the new monitors, I have a feeling it is related to my FCP or my graphics card. The issue ONLY happens within FCP, video plays fine once exported.
Specs on the machine:
Mac Pro 3,1
2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
10gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 - less than 6 months old.
Here is a link to the video playback compared to the exported QT. As you can see there is some crazy horizontal issues with the video playback. It happens with all formats and resolutions of video.
I've tried trashing prefs and reinstalling FCP with no luck. It happens all over the area of the video, not just top or bottom. Sorry I had to film it because it's not visible any other way. This happens with files playing off my main HD and external drives.
Any help is greatly appreciated, it's really a pain to edit when the playback is like this. And no, I don't have Apple Care and am too late to get it:(

Are you using one of these computer monitors in a Desktop Cinema Display mode?
If so, this is not the way to monitor your material for any QC. You need a qualified device to export a video signal to a proper monitor.
You could use one the 2410s to see what things look like if fed through a Matrox MXO2 mini.

Final Cut Pro issues with 10.5!

I realize this is a FCP issue but it's attributed directly to Leopard v10.5. We're not getting any answers over at the FCP Discussion pages. There is much more to these issues than I have written up. Wanted to keep it vague so as not to clutter this Discussion with un-necessary banter. Hopefully someone at Apple will notice this???
These issues are costing a lot of editors a ton of money!
When importing video/audio from P2 cards the clips will load but not import to internal/external drive. There is an error ! that gives no reason for the error. The only way to ingest video/audio is through a long and tedious method that completely takes away the reason the P2 workflow exists. When ctrl clicking a dissolve on the end of a clip that goes to black, the actual effect does not appear on the main monitor. The only way to make the dissolve work is to individually render it (even though you don't have to it's a real time effect). You can do a manual dissolve with the pen tool.
Both these breaks/bugs/issues cost post production a ton of time which translates into a ton of our livelihood. Can anyone at Apple help? When is the next software update coming and will it have the FCP Studio 2 fixes?

What do you mean the interface crashes but the program carries on running? Do the windows just disappear?
Also, if it happens on a lot of programs, it is an indication that something is screwed up on your whole system and I know people hate hearing this but it is at this point that you should consider doing an Erase and Install of your operating system.
