Final Cut Server: Mime Type missing from Asset`s info pane

Hello,
this is just too strange that could be something very silly.
A didn`t change any advanced configuration on FCSrv and my Myme Type (lower left) information has gone. All assets that I open don`t have the information below the Thumbnail.

Ok, nothing until now, that`s probably a tough one.
More news:
1- Recover don`t do anything, any point in time doesn`t change this problem.
2- Installing FCSrv from DVD doesn`t do anything as well the 1.1.1 update.
3- installed fresh FCSrv on another machine for tests and of course those fields are there in this new install. Compared thoroughly each ASSET_SEARCH, PAGRPASSET, ASSETTILESVIEW, ASSETINFOVIEW, ASSETTHUMBNAILVIEW, Metadata Groups between two FCsrv (the good one -fresh - and the old one) with no difference.
4- Just to clarify: I had lots of .mov files WITH all ok (with this fields appearing) on the old FCSrv, suddenly it vanished and the only thing that appears is the title (just the title not the "title:"). It doesn`t matter if upload, scan or anything. It doesn`t matter if it`s a photo (.jpeg) or .mov or anything. It doesn`t matter if it`s inside a production.
5- Just to rule out the possibility of FCSrv ruining Mime Type from the original files, I`ve uploaded from OLD-FCSRV MEDIA device to the new one and all it`s ok like the second image (that I`ve found on the FCSrv online manual).
I`ll nonetheless install FCSrv fresh on this machine anyway, but I just want to know what triggered this strange, odd and bizarre behavior if it happens again in the future.

What a news!
I am wondering how many FCSvr deployments are out there and what would be our Plan B.
IMHO, Final Cut Server is still the best asset management system in production space, and it would be hard to replace it.

Yes, I too would like to start this discussion. We have a highly customized distribution, and have come to rely on FCSvr for our workflow. As people find other solutions, or stick with FCSvr, it would be great to know their thinking and how they'll implement the new or the old. If Apple open sources it, there are a number of people who would love to start developing it more I'm sure.

Backup Final Cut Server Asset Library

Hi,
I like to find out the correct procedure to backup and restore the Final Cut Server Asset Library, and able to link up the catalog correctly.
There are instructions to backup and restore the FC Server catalog, proxies, etc, but I'm unable to find instructions for the asset library.
It's possible that the FC Server hardware goes down or Mac OS X gets corrupted, with the instructions available, it's possible to get the FC Server back working.
It's also possible that the storage hardware of asset library will fail, so I like to find out the procedure so the FC Server catalog " does not" to see the restored asset as "new".

Creating a Simple Excel Report from Final Cut Server

1. Modify the following Metadata Group (ASSETLISTVIEW) to contain the field you want to output in your report
2. Create Ruby file. In this example I named mine searchallassets.rb
Be sure to make the file executable, using the following command at the terminal sudo chmod 755 [file]

Finally. Edit the searchallassets.rb to include the path that you wish to save the output file.
In FCSvr, setup a Script Response to call this.
Then either trigger the Script Response via a Subscription or Schedule.

Final Cut Server (FCSvr) missing the Edit Proxies Device in the Advanced Administration Pane.

Final Cut Server (FCSvr) missing the Edit Proxies Device in the Advanced Administration Pane.
If for any reason an Admin has mistakenly or purposely deleted the Edit Proxies device
from the FCSvr Java Admin, and you'd like to restore connective to it following the instructions below.
Note verify these symptoms, open the FCSvr Java Admin, Go to Preferences and the Proxies Pane and inspect
If the field and drop down for Edit Proxies is missing please backup your FCSvr DB manually and following the steps below to restore connectivity.
1. From the Terminal from the following command
          cd /Library/Application\ Support/Final\ Cut\ Server/Final\ Cut\ Server.bundle/Contents/MacOS/
2. Next run the following command
           ./fcsvr_client getmd --xml /prefs/0 > ~/Desktop/prefs0.xml
This will output a XML file containing the Final Cut Server Global Preferences to the Desktop folder of the currently logged in user.
3. Using for favorite XML Text Editor (mine is TextMate) open the file that was output
4. Notice the XML element and attribute values between lines 29 and 31

5. From the command line run the following command to determine the Device ID for you Edit Proxies device
./fcsvr_client search /dev
You should get an output similar to what's below.

/dev/1         Proxies                       contentbase

Record the new Device id for the Edit Proxies device.
6. Open up the file /Desktop/prefs0.xml and XML attribute in line 29
   <address>/dev/20</address>
to the value of the Edit Proxies from step 6.
7. Save the /Desktop/prefs0.xml
8. From the command line run the following command
sudo ./fcsvr_client setmd /prefs/0 --xml ~/Desktop/prefs0.xml
enter you admin password if prompted.
9. Close and reopen the FCSvr Java Admin, Go to Preferences and Proxies and inspect
The field and dropdown should reappear.

H.264 is a puzzling choice of codec for edit proxies. H.264 is not an edit-friendly codec since it is a complex long-GOP structure and will require a ton of rendering just to play back the timeline. ProRES 422 Proxy would be a much better choice for editing. I'm afraid I can't account for the differences between Compressor and FCServer in this case, but my gut tells me the non-I-frame codec you are trying to use for edit proxies might have something to do with it. Maybe for an edit-proxy workflow to operate properly on the server-side the codec must be I-frame? Is there any reason you do not want to use ProRES 422 Proxy? They are about 1/3 the footprint of 720p24 DVCPRO-HD, which is already very efficient. For that frame rate and frame size they would be roughly half the heft of good ol' DV25.
So my answer to all three questions would be to try ProRES 422 Proxy for your edit proxies and see if everything lines up.

Total assets in Final Cut Server

is there a way to display how many assets are in a FCSvr database? I'm in the process of uploading over 10,000 assets to my server and want to be sure the server database asset quantity matches my storage disk quantity of original clips.

Paste this into a terminal and run it:
/Library/Application\ Support/Final\ Cut\ Server/Final\ Cut\ Server.bundle/Contents/Resources/sbin/fcsvr_run psql px pxdb -c "select count(*) from pxentity where parententityid = (select entityid from pxentity where address = '/asset');"
It will give you a count, which is the number of assets.

Importing Metadata to Final Cut Server from Excel

I'm getting ready to implement Final Cut Sever on an extremely asset-heavy media project, and I'm in need of a way to batch-import custom metadata from an excel spreadsheet.
Does anyone know if Final Cut Server has way to do this out of the box?
Specifically, if I have a an excel doc where column A = file name (of all media files) and columns b-??? = custom metadata, how can bring that information into FCS so that I can search my assets by the custom metadata?

Yes it can be done but with the help of scripts.
If I have to do it today I would try to save those excel into a comma separated plain text files. Then I would build an script to read those columns of data from the text file (easy with awk command) and then write those fields to the FCS metadata. The tricky part is to link the file to the right asset inside final (you need to get the asset ID from the asset to be able to "setmd") The best way for me to do this (without accesing the database itself) is to have the name of the file (the plain text file) to be the same as the filename of the asset. This way you can then perform a "Write XML" from Final and you get an filename.xml where the Asset ID is located. After this is easy to build a custom XML file to fill with the excel metadata and perform a "setmd" to write back to FCS.

Send to Apple TV From Final Cut Server

This was pretty simple, but clients really seem to appreciate having the functionality. Basically all you have to do is follow these steps to create a checkbox that can send any asset to your Apple TV for client viewing.
1. Create the field "Send to Apple TV".
2. Add that field to your Asset Search MD group and the MD goup that you wish people to access it in.
3. Create a Final Cut Server Playlist in iTunes
4. Open Automator in OSX. Create a Folder Action using the "Add Songs to Playlist" action from iTunes.
- Choose your Final Cut Server Playlist
5. Assign the folder action to a folder of your choice.
6. Create a Device "Apple TV" in Final Cut Server that points to that folder.
7. Create a transcode setting for "Apple TV H.264" and import to Final Cut Server
- Assign this transcode setting to your Apple TV Device
8. Create a "Send to Apple TV" Copy Response
- The destination device is "Apple TV"
- Transcode Setting is "Apple TV H.264"
9. Open Itunes on the Final Cut Server
- Setup your Apple TV
- Have the Apple TV automatically get the latest files from your Final Cut Server Playlist and send them to your Apple TV.

How do I migrate metadata from Final Cut Server for use in Premiere?

We're one of many companies looking to move to Premiere Pro from Final Cut.
We have thousands of tagged clips in Final Cut Server and I'm trying to find a way to export all that metadata so it can be used, and searched for, within Premiere Pro.
Does anyone know if/how this could be achieved?
The only thing I've found online that seems to be relevant is this:

This seems to explain how to export the metadata (although I don't fully understand it) but not how to make it useful for Premiere.

Well... I'm a librarian by training so I use Cat-DV a little differently.
I use it to make a searchable archive of proxy files for entire hard drives. I hook up a hard drive (say an old external) and point Cat-DV at it. It makes a catalog (locally) that has all the metadata (most importantly "date created") and a small proxy or thumbnail if it's a still. Then I unplug the drive, label it and put it on a shelf. When I need to find something all I have to do is consult the local catalog. I can search it (if I included any metadata) or, most likely, I'll just scrub around for date created. Cat-DV will display the exact path to where the asset is. I can search across multiple catalogs of drives without ever having to plug one in, Once I find the file I want, I just plug in that drive to retreive the file.
I use it mostly for stills and some b-roll that gets used over and over. For a variety of reasons, we never opted to make it a full replacement for FC Server.
And another thing... you can do a heck of a lot with the $99 or $300 version. You don't need to go the full enterprise server route (though you do have to do that to use the server functions).
You might also want to try Adobe Bridge for searching and editing metadata. In my experience, it's always been slow with video but that may well have changed. I haven't played with it in a while

Final Cut Server for audio assets?

Hi all,
Anyone have thoughts on using Final Cut Server for managing audio projects? I can see games programmers also needing it big time but can't see much info on how FC Studio handles audio assets. As for managing all material for an album...
If anyone has any info, I'd be pleased to hear it.

We are currently using it as a Photo/Video database.
I've only put about 3000 images/clips in there so far
but it seems to be working well.
We are running it on a old Quad G5 and have some
custom conversions set up for adding images and
videos.
Our Web team can take our videos and in two clicks
have a WMV and FLV video for their sites and then
select a few images and do a quick convert to web
sized imges..all within FCS
It would be nice to see a open architecture with plugin support
and more file compatibility, but for now it works great
as a database for images and video.

Active Directory logins from Windows to Final Cut Server

While I did manage to solve my main problem with Integrating AD with Final Cut Server at this one site.... It turns out that there a typo in the kerberos config file. Ooops. Now logins in from Mac OS using AD credentials works well. Unfortunately, I am still seeing some minor issues, like certain groups in AD not being able to login, and for some reason the Windows users can't login (only the Macs using AD credentials). Any seeing anything like this? Of course I enabled certain groups in Final Cut Server pref pane to match certain AD groups, but in the end only the BuiltIn groups worked, not the Domain Users, Domain Admin groups. Strange. And not sure why Windows users can't login. Same domain. Fun times.

It seems like I read the inital Kb article wrong. The Windows clients get the krb5.ini file, not the Domain Controller. LOL. Thanks to drew for pointing that out to me.

In order for Active Directory bound Windows Final Cut Server client systems to successfully authenticate to Final Cut Server, you must create a custom Kerberos configuration file on the Windows client system.

Final Cut Server 1.5: G5 clients won't launch from icon

So I upgraded my client from FCServer 1.1.1 to 1.5. They have a mix of G5 and Mac Pro stations. The 4 Mac Pros are all working fine after some fiddling and Java cache deleting. The G5s, however, won't run the client launched from the saved icon.
Scenario:
Access the client download from (IP address)/finalcutserver in a web browser - this works.
The applet downloads and saves - this works.
SOMETIMES it asks where to save the app - sometimes works.
The client app runs, logs in, all working fine - great.
BUT...if you quit and try to relaunch from that icon, it doesn't work. Purged Java caches, emptied the cache in the client, etc. - nothing. Updated from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8, same problem.
The Intel boxes all work, none of the G5s do - seems entirely platform specific.

Heh... I solved this... in a manner of speaking. I really appreciate the input from Nicholas, Andy, RadUS, and everyone else, but nothing worked.
Weird. May be actually a Java problem, not a FCSvr problem, maybe something in the Java implementation of 10.5.7 and later. But who knows? No word on this from Apple. There's a surprise.
Here's the solution I ended up with. It's a cop-out I know, but it works!
My solution was to put the Final Cut Server.jnlp file on my desktop and just launch it from there. You can even make it look like the desktop app if you want. Here's how:
First you have to get the Final Cut Server.jnlp file on your desktop. It's not easy to find, because it's located in some weird temp directory somewhere buried in the recesses of the OS. If you don't know where it is, look through your browser's download history and find it. You can always redownload it by going to your server (yourserver.com/finalcutserver) and redownloading it. When you find it, move it to your desktop. Then do a Get Info on both the desktop app and jnlp file. Click on the icon for the app (the tray with the balls) and press Command C to copy the icon. Then click on the jnlp icon (the document with the cup of java) and press Command V to paste the FCSvr desktop app icon to the jnlp. Then check "hide extension" in the jnlp's get info window. Voila. You now have a "fake" desktop app. Yes, it's fake. Get over it! You won't be able to tell a difference. This is the only solution I came up with and I reinstalled Leopard twice.

QT Error -8961 generated when exporting from Final Cut Server

Not sure about this one. We have a user that is trying to export a clip through quick time via Final Cut Server, but they are getting error -8961.
Has any one heard of this error before?

Yes, go into the Admin window in the Java client (as opposed to the System Preferences pane) and go to Transcode Settings. FInd the setting you wish to be able to export with, double click to open it, and add the "Export" device to its list of destination devices. Save and close. You may need to log out and back into FCSvr to see the changes reflected in your Export window.

Final Cut Server Info Window - Which Group Controls the information?

I have been searching the forums and have found similar postings but none that solve what i am seeing and wondering if it is my database (been configuring quite a bit and may have messed something up) or just an oversight of the wrong metadata group. I did notice that it happened when shortly after i needed to recover from a backed up version of the database.
Here is my issue. When you look at the main assets pane of final cut server you see all of the thumbnails which is great. Double clicking an asset bring up what i refer to as the info window for that asset. in configuration i have inadvertently removed the thumbnail representation of the asset and all of the data underneath from there, except for one custom metadata field. the productions still have the thumbnail, but have also lost a significant amount of data under the thumbnail.
I would like to put some of the info back but do not know which group to modify. I have looked inside the metadata groups from this post to see if it would help but no luck:

thought it was the AssetTilesView that affected that window's info on that pane. I looked inside that group but many fields in are listed in that configuration list when brought up. like i mentioned above, only one is listed when viewed outside the configuration window what the client app would see.
The only group that i have been modifying as per my knowledge was the asset_search group to add custom fields i made to the search criteria.
hope this is clear. i am tired and a little exhausted from racking my brain. thanks in advance.

i figured it out. it was an error between the chair and the keybord..
for those that stumble on this...
aside from the order the groups show up in the list Asset, P2.. ect.
the display priority affects the layout of the variables on the info page. so if the window layout looks odd (no thumbnail, or missing metadata) check the display priority.
