Find exact string using formula (excel)

I'm trying to use FIND statement to find multiple strings in the context of a larger formula. The original formula I'm basing it off of is as follows:
=IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("INC",A1))," ","Y")
Obviously, this yields a Y if it finds whatever text in " ". However, I have many strings for which I'd like to check and they need to be exact; ie when I search INC and inc, I do not want Inc to be counted. So, I tried the following formulas.
=IF(ISNUMBER(FIND(OR("INC",inc"),A1))," ","Y")
=IF(SUM(COUNTIF(A1,"* INC*","* inc*}))," ","Y")
The second one works best, but it also counts "Inc" as a match. Any suggestions?

bk284,
Well you've posted to the wrong forum as this forum is dedicated to questions/issues about customizing and programming Microsoft Project, a planning and scheduling application. However, your question is simple enough that I'll just take a shot at helping.
Try the LOWER function, it converts a text string to lower case so the upper case, lower case issue goes away.
If this answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

  • Finding exact matches using WITHIN clause or?

    We are storing documents in XML format in a CLOB. We need to find exact matches within an element through intermedia. Is there a way we can use the WITHIN clause or a different type of clause to get only exact matches for a phrase?
    e.g., a search on 'accord' would not bring back 'peace accord' etc.

    Hi,
    I recommend asking your question in an Excel forum:

    There's an Excel forum over on the MSDN side as well, but it focuses more on VBA:

  • Find Connection String used by SQL Server Management Studio

    I am having problems getting my VS C# .NET application to connect to a SQL Server Database, even though I can connect to it (on the same machine) using SQL Server Management Studio.
    Is there any way I can find the connection string that SQL Server Management Studio generates when it connects?

    Hi,
    As you have Visual Studio on your machine, I think we can also use the Visual Database Tools of Visual Studio to generate the connection string.
    Please:
    1. Create a new data connection to the SQL Server database in the
    Server Explorer of Visual Studio
    2. After the connection is established, right-click on the connection name and select
    Properties. There is an item called Connection String in the
    Properties window.

  • Number database field treated as String in formula when using 64bit runtime

    Hey just a quick shout out to those with the above problem or those following the now "closed but unanswered" thread by the same name - if you're getting "A string is required here" error messages after switching over to the 64-bit runtime, or other weird loss of formatting issues, then try turning off the "Verify on First Refresh" or "Verify Stored Procedures on First Refresh" options in File | Report Options... as the case may be.

  • Using Regex to find a string

    Is it viable to use regular expressions with Search "Specific Tag" (i.e.script) "With Attribute" (i.e. src) and "=" a regex string rather than an exact search term?  The Find / Replace tool seems to prevent a simple wildcard find (i.e. "searchter* for searchterm) Any insight would be appreciated.

    I'm trying to replace a script source value for all instances where the value contains the string "/bbcswebdav/xid-144702_1", where the string "xid-" is followed by a different numerical value in each instance.
    The regex for finding that string is:
    \/bbcswebdav\/xid\-[\d_]+
    The numerical value contains an underscore, so the final section ( [\d_]+ ) uses a range that selects one or more numbers and/or underscores.
    Perhaps as important as identifying what you want to find is specifying how you want to replace it. Regexes can have capturing groups that can be used in the Replace field to simplify matters.

  • In the new Numbers, can I find and replace within formulas like I used to in Numbers'09?

    I use Numbers with quite long formulas with reference to other tables. With Numbers'09, it was extremely useful to copy formulas and then use "find and replace" to change the terms within.
    Did they remove this option? I don't seem to be able to do that with the new Version.
    If it's still there, where do I find it?
    If it's not there.... why would they remove it.
    Thanks

    Basically, I use it for payroll, taxes, and so on... I have one sheet per employee (which compiles their weekly payroll). I have then different sheets which makes the quarterly taxes calculation (state and federal taxes - 941, 940, W2, disability,  UI, paystubs, tracks payments and deadlines, etc... ). It took me awhile to write all of the formulas, but now it does everything for me.
    When I add an employee. I have to add a sheet, but also add a line in the calculation sheets. Because all the employee sheets are the same format, all I need to do (or used to now) was to copy the line above, and just change the reference name of the employee sheet  within the formula (because there are several terms that are looked up, the reference name comes several time in the formula)... changing it manually is really annoying. What was taking me a minute or so, before, now takes me about 20 minutes. (between the different sheets, there are about between 75 to 100 changes in formulas per new employee - so the "find and replace" in formula only, was extremely useful).

  • Can't find file when use the main(String[] args) method

    I put a file under the DefaultDomain directory of Weblogic 11.1.1.5 on my local machine. Below is how I look up this file
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream("input.xml");
    I started up the IntegratedWeblogicServer instance and I tested using the below 2 approaches.
    1) When I test a web service program using the below approach, it CAN'T find the input.xml file
    public static void main(String[] args)
    2) When I package it into an EAR file and deploy it onto the server then log into the admin console and use the test client approach then it's able to find the file
    How do I make it so it can find the file using #1 approach?
    Thanks

    That's how relative paths work, and it's nothing particular to Java.
    When you type ls input.xml or dir input.xml does it list the file, or give an error? If it lists the file, then it's in your current directory, and it will work if you run Java from that directory. If it gives an error, then that file is not in your current working directory, and Java won't be able to find it either.

  • How can I modify column width in a spreadsheet report without using an Excel template

    I currently use the LabVIEW Report Generation toolkit in LabVIEW 2011SP1 to create simple spreadsheet reports that I can build/print without having Microsoft Office products installed.  I really like being able to do this, and it allows me to generate nice on-demand data reports - I'm also not tied to having Office installed on the system I'm using, so this works on just about any test fixture I can install the software on.
    I recently have a requirement that I must have variable-length columns in my report.  I currently use the VI "Append Text Table to Report" in order to create a text table, but the column width requirement is that all columns must be equal width UNLESS I use an Excel Template file to define my column widths.
    My questions are:
    Is it possible to create a text table and define per-column widths without using an Excel Template?  If so, how?  My report mainly has a lot of small numerical values for the columns, but some columns contain system names or status messages - I really hate the longer text blocks wrapping and taking up so much real-estate when if I could control the column widths I can get all my data on a single line.
    I'll admit I haven't tried this myself yet, but if I use an Excel Template will that require me to have Excel installed on the PC in order to print/generate reports?
    Is there a recommended way (with an example) of generating a text table in a report with or without using the "Append Text Table to Report" VI that allows me to have custom column widths that doesn't require me to manually build a custom print page?  If I do have to create a custom print page, what would be the most straightforward approach?
    Thanks!
    -Danny

    Sure, I'll provide a pared down example that demonstrates my use-case:
    I have a control to the VI that takes in a 2D array of strings representing the data I want printed in a table.  I am generating a standard report, adding a table to the report, and printing it.  The first VI is "New Report.vi", the second VI is "Append Table to Report.vi", and the third is "Print Report.vi", all found standard in the Report Generation palette.
    Note that the "Append Table to Report.vi" has an input parameter "Column Width" with a default value of (1).  This input parameter is a single input parameter, which defines the column widths of ALL the columns in my table - hence, with the VI the way it is, all my columns will be 1 inch wide.
    I find myself needing to be able to define per-column widths, not just a single global column width parameter.
    The only way I have found to do this is by using an Excel template file.  The "New Report.vi" takes in a "template" parameter, and if used, the report generation toolkit can be set to ignore the "Column Width" input parameter on the "Append Table to Report.vi" by setting the width value to -1.  Instead it will launch Excel, open the template file provided, build the table using the template, will close Excel, and will attach the generated table to the report.  However, I have a strict requirement that Microsoft Office NOT be required to be installed on the computer.
    So, without using Excel, is there a way to generate a table in a report and define the width of each column individually?

  • How can I search for an exact string match in my emails?

    I was looking for an old email that I had about Re-Animator The Musical. So, in the search bar in the upper right corner of the Thunderbird window, I typed "re-animator". I got 59 hits, and the message that actually contained the string "re-animator" was 27th, when sorted by relevance. All of the other hits were emails which contained the word "animal" or "animals", which to me has nothing to do with "re-animator". I'm surprised that those were considered hits at all, much less that they were considered more relevant than the one message which actually contained the desired string.
    I actually tried three different searches:
    reanimator
    re-animator
    "re-animator"
    (i. e. the first two were without quotes and the third was with quotes). All three of these variations had the same problem, though, that messages containing "animal" were ranked before the message containing "re-animator".
    The desired message contained the word "Re-Animator" (with that capitalization and hyphenation), and also contained "reanimatorthemusical" as part of a URL that was mentioned in the message. So, I would have expected both the search with the hyphen and the search without the hyphen to have been good hits for this message.
    My question is: How can I tell Thunderbird to search for messages that literally contain the string I ask for, and not get "creative" with the matches, as it seems to be doing for some reason?
    (I'm using Thunderbird 31.3.0 on Mac OS X 10.9.5.)

    No, searching for:
    "Animator" musical
    still has the exact same problem: it still wants to find "animal" instead of "animator". Why?
    Yes, I had already read the support article you linked to, but I hadn't found anything in it about why Thunderbird would prefer "animal" over "animator", or how to disable this misfeature. Is there no better documentation for the search bar than that?
    (And the search for "Animator The Musical" didn't find my message, simply because my message didn't contain that exact string. It contained "I am on a waiting list for some musical tickets for Sunday, but I haven't heard back yet. It is a preview of The Re-Animator. ( http://www.reanimatorthemusical.com/ )." The search for "Animator The Musical" only had a single hit, your message in which you suggest searching for that.)

  • PowerShell script to find a string of characters in office documents in Doc Libraries and List Item attachments?

    Hi there,
    For SharePoint 2010 site - Does someone have the PowerShell script to find a string of characters in Office/Word/Excel/PDF documents in document libraries or the ones attached to List Items?
    Thanks so much in advance.

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to find some specific string character in list items using PowerShell Command.
    $w = Get-SPWeb "http://devmy131"
    $l = $w.GetList("http://devmy131/lists/fieldslist");
    $i = $l.Items[0]["Title"].ToString();
    if ($i -like '*document*')
    Write-Host "Title contains document character" $i;
    More information:
    PowerShell -contains -like
    Thanks

  • Forcing an exact string match in searches

    Is there a way of using the Case Exact String and Case Ignore String plugins so I can ensure that the iPlanet directory server only returns exact matches to an LDAP client.
    e.g.the difference in
    ldapsearch "cn=Abc"
    ldapsearch "cn=ABC"
    I want to find only "ABC" and NOT Abc or abc or aBc and so on..

    You can accomplish this using extensible matching rules.
    By default, the cn attribute is not case-sensitive. You can search for a case-sensitive cn value with a search filter like:
    cn:2.5.3.15:=ABC
    This will use the 2.5.3.15 (Case Exact Match) matching rule on the cn attribute. Note that this search will not be indexed, however, and will take longer than a normal cn search for an exact value.
    You can find more information on extensible matching in RFC 2254 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2254.txt).

  • Find a string within a field

    This may be easy but I am new to this so here it goes.  I am trying to find if a string can be found in a mysql database field.
    The following will only find exactly match
        <CFQUERY DATASOURCE="databasename">
        SELECT mycontact, userid
        FROM mytable
        WHERE email = #form.email#'
        </CFQUERY>
    The following will return result if the field email is contain in the form.email
        <CFQUERY DATASOURCE="databasename">
         SELECT mycontact, userid
         FROM mytable
         WHERE email like '%#form.email#%'
        </CFQUERY>
    But these will not give what I want.  I want the reverse of the above.  The email fied can contain MORE than one email addresses.  I want to be able to enter a value i.e. form.email and search the table and find any record in the "email" field that contain form.emal.  Help is appreciated.  I am using MYSQL database.  Thanks.

    FIRST OF ALL
    Everybody is right, fix the darn database.
    SECOND OF ALL
    Problem 2 is why you have the four cases.
    WHERE
    email = '#form.email#'
    this finds the case where there is one email in the field
    OR email like '%,#form.email#,%'
    this finds emails in the middle of a list.  By putting the comma's in your search prevents [email protected] from matching [email protected] because you are searching for ,[email protected],
    OR email like '%,#form.email#'
    This finds the email if it is at the end of a list, including the comma in the search for the same reason as the previous case.
    OR email like '#form.email#,%'
    And finally find the email if it at the beginning of a list.
    Message was edited by: ilssac Hopefully you can understand this with the stupid forum making all the 'emails' into links including the silly envelope icon.
