Finder freezing on folder display (icon draw issue)

I've got a weird issue with one computer. MacPro totally loaded (12-core, 16GB RAM, RAID card w/three drives as RAID5). Fast as anything as you might expect.
Problem is with the Finder freezing when opening folders. It can happen with any folder, but it's inconsistent. Computer is used by a photographer so most images are image files (jpeg, tiff, Canon raw). I suspect the issue is with icon drawing and/or some cache related to that. I have, however, seen this happen with folders that contain nothing but other folders.
Specifically, the user will open a folder. The Finder will begin to draw its icon previews. Most of the time no problem. Some of the time the Finder will freeze midway through the drawing (some icons remain as generic icons at time of freeze). Activity Monitor says Finder is at 2400%, which is a bit startling unto itself. Only way out is to restart the Finder.
To test, I wrote an AppleScript which opens and closes a large series of folders (roughly 50 different folders). I'm able to duplicate the problem using this script. It's a different folder each time, and one interesting thing is if the script makes it through all 50 folders fine once, it'll do it fine forever until the next reboot (I stopped it at 2000 runs on two occasions). I can post the script if anyone is curious.
The system is pretty clean, Photoshop and a few other regular apps, nothing tricky. I cleaned all the caches with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner. I repeated the test with a freshly created user on the same system, with the same results. Repaired permissions, ran DiskWarrior, etc. Ran the extended hardware test from the OS DVD, no trouble.
I thought it might be a Quicklook think, but I don't see any third-party plugins at all.
I have not done an OS reinstall, as I'd like to actually solve this problem. If I run out of ideas I'll do that.
Looking for any thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks,
Mitch

I believe I've solved this problem. Disabling the processor's hyperthreading was the solution.
To do this, I issued this command in the Terminal:
sudo nvram SMT=0
then immediate rebooted.
Finder hasn't frozen since. I've rebooted and run my test script several times.
Looks like Hyperthreading is an issue in many circumstances, including specifically the preview of large TIFF files. There's a developer tool called Processor.prefpane (installed with XCode) which can temporarily disable it. That's how I determined it was the cause. The above terminal command is permanent (the prefpane's settings reset to default after reboot).
I'll update here if I run across additional information.

  • Simple Finder issue displaying icons

    Hi,
I've installed the Opera browser with the admin account, then created a normal user.
I then enable Parental Control on that normal account, select simple finder and only allow Opera from loading (and go into the list and make sure it's selected).
When I load with the user, Opera is not in the "My applications" folder, what's wrong?
If I disable use simple finder the icon shows up and runs fine.
    Help please!

Sometimes people want to use "Parental Controls" to limit what a user can do, but with a three year old, you probably don't have to worry too much about that. In that sort situation, try removing "Parental Controls" from the account (or you can use "Some Limits" if you wish).
Then log into the account and arrange the "Dock" the way you want. Next, open "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and enter the commands below, which turn on the Finder's simplified interface (big icons; one-click access), and lock the "Dock" to prevent items from being removed:<pre>
    defaults write com.apple.finder InterfaceLevel simple
    defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool true</pre>
Then log out and back in. This doesn't fully reproduce the "Simple Finder" interface, but it covers a couple of the most obvious aspects. If necessary, futher settings can be introduced, à la carte as it were...

  • Finder Strange behaviour: folder and file icons not showing, then they disa

Yesterday I was trying to install the postgresql package from (http://web.mac.com/dru_satori/iWeb/PostgreSQLforMac/Welcome.html). Actually I had an older version of their package, i uninstalled it, tried installing the new package, but kept receiving errors that the installation was not correct.
Now the point of this question, as I was doing the above, i started to notice that some files (either on my desktop or in a folder window) are not showing the icon. Only the label is showing! when I click on such a file, the file disappear (i mean even the label is gone).
I have completed permission repairs, disk repairs. I also noticed that this is only happening in my account, but not that of other accounts on this computer, which indicates that this is a problem in my home directory. I have also re-lunched the finder using the force quit window. I have also trashed the com.apple.finder.plist and logged out and then logged in again. I have just noticed that (pages) is asking for the serial number! I have this program installed months ago! It seems that some other files are also getting damaged!
Is there something that I am missing? Is this a bug? is there any solution, because this is very annoying and it might indicate a bigger problem that I am not aware of.
    thank you for your help

I also noticed that this is only happening in my account, but not that of other accounts on this computer, which indicates that this is a problem in my home directory.
    Good first troubleshooting step!
Now log back into your normal user account: (In your case I would try preferences first)
    1. Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    • Navigate to ~(yourhome/library/preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
       • Navigate to yourhome/library.
       • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
       • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
       • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
       • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
    Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
If the issue persists navigate to yourhome/library/caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

My macbook pro freezes and then displays a blue screen with black stripes... do you know what's wrong with it?
I have a two and half year mac book pro... I've had some issues with the screen looking scrambled when I quit certain applications, but now it's turned into something worse.  I'll be working on my computer and the thing will freeze.  When I force restart, the first screen, the apple logo, will be a blue tint and won't boot up normally.  Then I try safe mood and it will then boot just fine.  But there are blue stripes on my screen.  The screen alternates from a blue tint to normal and if the computer freezes again the screen will become completely blue with black stripes.  I haven't tried reinstalling my software because I don't have the startup discs that came with my computer.  If I was sure that would fix it I would purchase them, but if it's a hardware issue I'm afraid that I'm screwed.  I've been able to successfully get the blue off my screen by putting it to sleep and then waking it up, but that's not working well anymore either.
Does anyone else have experience with this?  Is it the firmware or what?  I have a MacBook Pro from early 2011 and I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    Please help... Thanks!

I just experienced this exact same issue with my early 2011 15" macbook pro. Since like a month after purchasing it I had issues with the screen randomly going dark on me. I sent it in for repair inder waranty they replaced the gpu and logic board but I continued to have the same issues with the screen randomly going black sometimes I would need to reboot it in order to get the screen to go back on but it happened so infrequently and I used the computer for school so disnt find the time to resend it in to apple. Just last night the screen started to display the blue screen with black verticle lines on it. I called apple and explained to them  the issues that had been ongoing since I purchased the laptop but they said because I was now outside of warantee that any repairs at thia point wouldn't be covered. Fml so glad I spent 2200 on this future proof macbook pro what a joke my sister purchased a toshiba laptop for 300 4 years ago and it still running like a champ. I loved my macbook but at the price I paid I expect it to last longer than 2 years before leaving me high and dry. *** apple??

  • Display icons in Network ui element

    Hello everybody!
Im trying to display some hierarchies in a Network ui element. Generally, this works fine, but I'm not able to display icons with the elements inside the applet. The examples in the JNet/JGantt Developer Documentation use <icon/>-tags with the path to a gif file in the Type Repository section like this
    <type name="SomeTypeName" inherits="SomeBaseTypeName">
         <icon space="5">apps/orgchart/chief.gif</icon>
    </type>
and the Type Repository documentation tells me to
Specify the relative address of the URL in relation to the code base of JNet.jar
(a file in your own JAR. file: apps/slm/icon.gif, for example). If
the relative path starts with apps, JNet automatically adds the
missing com/sap/jnet. We recommend that you use the relative path
wherever possible, because you can store the icon graphics in the same directory
in Perforce as the type repository.
But how would I determine the relative address of my icon files stored in my web dynpros src/mimes/components/<component name>-folder inside my WebDynpro jar/ear/whatever in relation to the code base of the JNet.jar which - I guess - would reside inside the WebDynpro runtime or somewhere else on the server, but not inside my own jar ? Or am I wrong about this ?
    Thanks a lot
    Michael

    Hi Christian!
That's what I tried in the first place. The result is something like
    /usr/sap/XXX/J02/j2ee/cluster/apps/myCompany.com/my~webdynproapp/servlet_jsp/webdynpro/resources/myCompany.com/my~webdynproapp/root/Components/package.path.to.my.component/imagename.gif
but the applet does not find the image files. Since the JNet documentation says to specify the relative path from the JNet.jar code base, I'd have to find out where that is and calculate the relative path, but possibly this will only work inside a single jar (which I don't have since the JNet.jar is somewhere among the portal WebDynpro runtime components, I guess).
Preferrably, I'd like to have a look at a working example using the Network ui component with external icons inside a java WebDynpro. Propably someone has done that before...
    Thanks

  • Finder freeze when opening folders of my Western Digital external hard disks

I'm facing a big issue. I'm runnin' Mac Os Lion, I realized a clean install a few days ago. Everything is going fine, but every time I plug an external hard disk on my MBP, I can see the disk appearing on my desktop or in the finder, and when I open it, the finder freezes, I have to reboot manually, or wait to relaunch the finder. My disks are in HFS format, used to work great on Snow Leopard no longer than a week ago... What is weird is that my time machine (external hard disk usb) works fine... Moreover, I can see the disks in the Disk Utility, I can't click on "verify permissions" but on "verify disk" and it says that the disks are fine... Any idea ?
PS : I could have erase everything on them and reformat, but I need the files inside...
    Thanks

    Hi!
    Here's a suggestion from BDAqua:
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra number on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a number, and reboot.

  • 10.9.2 Finder Freezes when resizing and changing directories

I just updated to 10.9.2 to find that when the Finder is open, and I resize the Finder, for instance to stack two windows side by side ... the Finder freezes when I simply drag the corner of the window around.

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?

  • Overlapping icons in Applications Folder Dock icon

I recently upgraded to a MBP Retina running 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.
Deciding to re-install apps and cleanup old unused stuff, I didn't use the Migration Assistant.
I opened Finder and dragged the Applications folder to the Dock.  When I did so, the preference was to display as Stack.  At first, it was showing the Mac App Store icon as it was the first app listed in the folder.  When I installed Adium.app, Adium became the first app listed in the folder and now I have the Adium "duck" icon overlapping the blue Mac App Store icon.
If I rename Adium.app to Badium.app, the Mac App Store is the icon displayed on the Dock. If I rename Adium.app to anything alphabetically before App Store, they overlap.  I've tried dragging the Applications folder off the Dock and re-adding it, running the command "killall Dock" from Terminal, logging out and back in, and even rebooting.  Deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist doesn't fix it.
How do I get the folder to display the first app instead of overlapping or having to have the folder displayed as a "Folder"?

Ok - I may not have phrased my question correctly.
I have right-clicked on the icon and toggled between Stack and Folder.  Folder displays an ugly blue folder w/ the App Icon.  Stack displays Adium overlapping the Mac App Store.  Maybe the other apps icons are present but just obscured by the blue circular App Store icon.
I don't want overlapping, or "stacked" icons.  I want the old Lion (10.7.x) style of showing the first icon in your Applications folder without "stacking" all the other apps behind it.

  • Create folder / file icon with automator

    Guys,
I know very little about using Automator.
I was wondering if there is a way to create folder / file icons using automator to take an image of the contents of the file (maybe an image file / autodesk or sketchup drawing etc). The process would be similar to the way image files such as jpeg etc display the image as the file icon automatically.
    Hope this makes sense.
    Cheers....Scotty

Have you considered using rsync?  This has the benefit of only copying only changed files on subsequent backups.
    Here's rsync wrapped in Applescript:
set SrcDir to (choose folder with prompt "Please select Source directory")
set DestDir to (choose folder with prompt "Please select Destination directory")
set SrcDir to text items 1 thru -2 of POSIX path of SrcDir
do shell script "/usr/bin/rsync -aHE --delete --exclude=\"*.mpg\" " & space & SrcDir & space & POSIX path of DestDir
For a list of rsync options, in Terminal, enter: man rsync.

I'm thinking I need to delete a plist somewhere, but I'm not sure which one and don't want to take a big risk.
    Cany you help?

"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. It's worse than the imaginary "viruses" you were worried about when you installed it. Not only does it fail to protect you, it destabilizes and slows down your computer, and it sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.
Back up all data, then remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions:
    avast! Support Center
    Reboot.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and follow the instructions linked above.
If you still have problems after following those instructions, post again.

  • Finder freezes after multiple file copy

Hi!  I recently bought an external hard disk drive (1TB) and had it formatted for use of the Mac.   I copied all the files in my All Images folder to the HDD by selecting all the files and dragging to the HDD.   However, it seems to have copied/duplicated the files in the same folder.   Now Finder freezes (the rainbow pinwheel keeps appearing).   I am still able to do some keyboard shortcut functions -- to shut down and restart only.   I tried to open in safe mode and go to Finder's Go tab but couldn't find the Libraries folder so that I could delete com.apple.finder.plist (I googled this solution).   Help please.

I figured it out, it's so bizzare. I realized that for all of the problems I was having, the hang up occured right before the computer was supposed to play a sound. Anyway, I looked through my sound preferences and discovered my alerts were set to go to my jawbone headset, which I only connected to my computer a couple of times, but that was months ago. Anyway, I changed that and all seems well now. All I can assume is that the OS sees the sound is supposed to go to the headset, sees the headset isn't active (or connected), so it tries to connect and activate (which it hangs the app for), and that times out, at which point it routes the sound through the system speakers. This issue is probably uncommon, but doesn't seem to be anything unfixable.
