Firefox 35.01 custom search engines

So, I just upgraded to FF 35.01 (yeah, I'm late) from FF 33-ish and I can't figure out how to use custom search engines in this version. In my old version I would just click the search tool at the top right of the browser and the list of search engines I'd added would be displayed and I could search directly on Amazon, Youtube, Wikipedia, or what have instead of having to do a Google search first. Am I missing something or is that feature gone and Google the only option now? If so, is downgrading to FF 33 a bad idea as far as performance and/or security issue go?

I use OmniBar to get rid of the search box entirely and incorporate it into my location bar. I can then choose whatever search engine I want as well as add one.
The search options in Firefox 35 have been moved into the Options.

So, I have been trying for some time to get my own, favorite search engines into the Firefox Mobile search bar. I finally found a rather complicated workaround:
Get a free account at www.shortmarks.com - use your spam-only Gmail address or similar.
Manually create a search plugin for Shortmarks.com and place it in the "searchplugins" folder of Firefox Mobile. On my Android phone, the folder is in
/mnt/sdcard/Android/data/org.mozilla.firefox/files/mozilla/XXXXXXXX.default/

The search plugins from addons.mozilla.com can be installed directly in Firefox mobile, but - to my knowledge - not the ones from Mycroft. The advantage of using the self-made Shortmark search plugin it that it allows adding any search engine - not only the ones from addons.mozilla.com. Furthermore, you can import all custom search engines from an existing Desktop Firefox version to Shortmark, and access them directly by using the familiar abbreviations in the Firefox Mobile search bar - e.g., gb for Google Book search.
The process of creating this very useful function would be far easier if www.shortmarks.com was added as a downloadable search plugin from addons.mozilla.com. As said, search plugins cannot be imported to Mobile Firefox directly from Mycroft.

How to add Custom Search Engines to Search Bar

In the past I managed to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' (Windows Version) by just right-clicking that site's own 'search bar' and choosing 'Add to search bar'. I had no third party plugin installed to do this. It was provided by Firefox itself.
Or am I mixing up this feature with Google's 'Add Custom Search Button' ?
Anyhow, is there a way to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' from any website, WITHOUT having to:
* install an add-on (like: Add to Search Bar 2.0)
* acquire search engines on 'mycroft.mozdev.org'
* acquire search engines from 'Manage/Add Search Engines' from the drop-down menu in the search bar ?

Safari and Firefox do not open search engines

I have an IMac 8.1, with OS 10.5.8. Recently, our internet browser programs (safari and firefox) will not open any search engine (google, bing or yahoo). However, I am able to navigate to web-sites that I manually type in (e.g., www.cnn.com). Does anyone know what the cause, and fix, to this issue? Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated.

Maybe not. Most, if not almost all, anti-virus software interferes with OS X and is not required.

Everytime I open Firefox 8 my default search engine (in the upper right) changes to Yahoo. I want it to stay on google. I have even removed Yahoo as a search option but it keeps showing up on restart. How can I stop this?

When I installed a new program yesterday, it also without my knowledge installed a customised Yahoo toolbar at the same time setting default search to Yahoo.
Even though I removed the toolbar from Firefox, nothing I did would stop Yahoo from being the default search. Changing it in "manage search engines" or about:config didn't help as it was immediately reset. I wasted hours searching the web looking for a solution.
Eventually I started task manager and noticed an application called '''searchsettings.exe''' this is '''malware''' supplied by completely completely unethical company called '''Spigot Inc''' this runs in the background forcing search back to Yahoo contrary to the computer owner's settings.
It may be uninstalled via the Windows Control Panel. One just needs to find the toolbar to uninstall. In my case I found and removed an application called "pdfForge Toolbar" which also removed searchsettings.exe.
I am absolutely galled at the audacity of '''Spigot Inc''' installing a program surreptitiously that prevented me from changing the settings on my own computer is completely dishonest. I refuse to use any software that installs a Spigot Inc Toolbar, it is about time that Spigot was shut down!

Firefox 23, home screen search engine.

Apparently, Firefox 23 comes with a new feature that somewhat annoys me. It seems that home page search (in the middle of the screen) now always uses currently selected search engine from the search bar (top right).
How do I rever this? I want my home page to always search via Google, while having Wikipedia as my selected search engine in the search bar.
I am observing this on two of my computers, on the first one I did a fresh install of Firefox 23. When I noticed the strange behavior, I went to another one and ran an update from Firefox 22 to 23 - and now it behaves exactly the same. Annoying!

I have the same problem. This new feature is pretty annoying.
There is anything in about:config we can change to prevent the default engine to switch every time I change the selected engine?

Googles custom search engine

I purchased Google's Business Search Engine and have spent all day trying to get it to search over my 2 sites. It will search the one site fine but I cant find out why it wont include the 2nd one. Google's support is not much help. Thought someone over here might be able to shed some light. Both sites are created in iweb 08 and hosted on 2 diff .mac accounts.

We have a requirement to speedup search functionality in our system. In our system we have few table where we are maintaining customer and product relationship(Customer is eligible to use product). we need to speedup searching like Google search.Currently we are using TREX where we first pass user search string to TREX and get relevant product list and then perform filter with customer and product combination in our Ztables which take too much time.
Our requirement is to publish customer and Product relationship table(it has around 10 millions record) in TREX (Z solution). or any other possible approach .

My requirement is to publish this Z table in TREX but i don't know how do i achieve this. I know TREX has lots of option like Fuzzy search that I cannot do in Select query.

I did what you said but when I got to searchplugins the only extension I found was .xml.
I did see yahoo.xml and deleted it. I'll have to restart Firefox to see if that did anything. And you must be right. My browser was recently hijacked and I only recently got it back to where I want it and then Yahoo started showing up. Would uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling do any good?

For example, what should I do add a custom search engine? It is not available via add-ons. When I go to the search page, Firefox doesn't detect it and it doesn't prompt me or allow me to add it as a search provider. I am looking for options similar to that in Chromium browser.

Am using Firefox 5.0.1, any new tabs open with a search engine for imvu and when I go to about:config there is no entry for browser.newtab.url that I can modify

I am using Firefox 5.0.1.4205 with Windows 7 Home Premium Service pack1. My new tabs in Firefox open with a search engine for imvu rather than google as I would prefer. I can't find an answer to my problem so far because when I try the recommended use of about:config and finding browser.newtab.url; it is not listed. Is this version of firefox to old to have that, or is it just missing? What can I do to get my new tabs to open with a Google search engine. This is on my 80 year old father's computer so he is not likely to upgrade browsers as I would on my home computer. Thank you for any help with this.

The new tab page (about:newtab) wasn't introduced until a later version of Firefox (iirc, ''Firefox 10'') , which is why that pref can't be found.

I tried to use Duck Duck Go as my default search engine for Firefox. I had google set as my default search engine. How do I fix it. Cant use about:config.

Duck Duck go won't even let me access About:config. It's like I am locked into Duck Duck go. I checked my add on manager and found nothing about Duck Duck Go there. What do you mean that it won't let you access the about:config page?
Can't you open the about:config page via the location bar or can't you modify prefs?
You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

Current Firefox versions use the search engine that is selected in the search bar (click the search engine icon to open the drop down list) on the Navigation Toolbar for searching via the location bar and for the search engine on the about:home page.
