Firefox sync data is gone.

My computer broke so I transfered my appdata to a friends laptop, after a month passed my friend had to reset something on their computer (win8) so I created a sync account and figured my data was safe. Whatever he installed deleted firefox along with plenty of other apps. I was locked out of my sync account, mozilla didn't send me any emails for weeks and pretty much kept redirecting me to dinosaurs and errors. Against all odds I managed to access the account and here is the part I raged...NONE of my data got synced and while I originally syncced it I WATCHED it say "encrypting data". Are your servers malfunctioning or what? I've used firefox for years and have always been satisfied with your services but this is jersey clerk poor.
I'm not that upset with losing a months data ( still have original appdata ) but I spent long nights researching topics that I can no longer find due to not having those bookmarks or browsing history.

hello PuppetMaster, i don't know if it will be of any consolation to you, but mozilla is currently working to completely overhaul & simplify the sync service (the changes are currently scheduled to land in firefox 29).

  • Bookmarks of Firefox Sync lost & Request to restore Firefox Sync data

I'm using "Firefox Sync" to sync the bookmarks between a desktop and a tablet.
On the desktop, the bookmarks include 2 parts:
    # all bookmarks by "Firefox Sync" is updated to "Mobile device" folder;
    # another part is bookmarks that only add/change by desktop and is unchanged by "Firefox Sync".
Last night, "Mobile device" folder on the desktop lost, but other bookmarks exist. since I haven't used the tablet and synced with the tablet for a month, all new bookmarks in "Mobile device" folder lost and cannot find out from the tablet. The bookmarks includes my important research; thus, I really want to get it back.
I've tried the following methods, but it still doesn't see "Mobile device" folder:
    * sync bookmark with the server (I'm afraid that the blank already replaced the data on the sync server)
    * restore the autosaved bookmarks file *.json
    * move places.sqlite to another computer
Does Firefox backup their Firefox Sync Server everyday? Would I request Firefox Support to restore my Firefox Sync data on the server back to 3 days ago? Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. It's so sad to hear that it cannot restore data back to 3 days ago. I've checked the tablet and the desktop, it cannot find out the data. I only blamed myself that I didn't backup the bookmarks...and I need to do it from scratch.
But I haven't understood why the bookmarks disappeared in the desktop without any error. I've just updated Firefox from 8.0.1 to 15.0.1, I hope it'll not happen again.

  • All my firefox sync data has been deleted and I don't know why. Any way to restore it??

I had alot of bookmarks and passwords on my firefox sync. However, I rebooted my computer a few days ago and now when I clicked on "Merge sync data" my data still does not appear and it seems like everything has been deleted. Can I restore this data?

I have tried restoring it but it only shows dates for the last 5 days which doesn't help. I rebooted my computer (formatted hard drive and reinstalled windows) a few days ago so any backup files in my computer are gone. I thought that there are backup copies made on the Firefox server but obviously I was wrong!
I don't see the point of Firefox sync if you can't view your bookmarks etc online and if there aren't backups made on the server.

  • How do I use Firefox Sync data from my Android phone to restore data to my desktop browser?

I was attempting to cull some history, Firefox became non-responsive and had to be force closed. When it was re-opened, all my tabs which are typically restored were missing and I did not have the option to restore the session. According to sync on my Android, the last update there was about an hour ago, which would have been before issue with the desktop browser. How can I restore my info from my phone, ensuring it is not overwritten by the lack of data now on my desktop version?

    HI Snickers,
There is an option to sync tabs. About:sync-tabs works on the desktop and can see the tabs from that device however this feature is not available for the mobile device. However from an active sync the current sessions are visible from the desktop page.
In order to restore a session you may be able to restore the session if it crashed. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1026370#answer-644109 With these instructions]

  • I lost all my Firefox Sync data on my computer, but still have it on my phone. Is there any way to get my sync key off of my phone?

My Android phone has Firefox installed, and is connected to Sync. Somehow, I lost all of my Firefox data (I think I know how this happened, and I'm going to address that problem with my computer next). Is there any way to pull the sync key off of my phone, since in a house-keeping frenzy I apparently deleted the sync key from my computer?

    No, there is not.
    Sorry.

  • How secure is Firefox Sync on Android

First, let me summarize how I understand the current security concept of Firefox4Linux, as some of the documents I read may be old:
L1) During sync setup Firefox4Linux creates recovery key, encrypt all passwords, bookmarks, ... using this recovery key and upload them to the server[1].
L2) Passwords are encrypted only by using the recovery key, (not by master password)[2].
L3) When pairing J-PAKE (Password Authenticated Key Exchange by Juggling) is used to securely transfer the recovery key[3].
L4) On Firefox4Linux master password is used to encrypt the Recovery Key. Based on my own observation as it is not possible to view Recovery Key without entering the master password at least once.
This all seems to me reasonably secure and there should be no leakage of recovery key without compromising Master password. Now regarding my findings for Firefox4Android:
A1) Firefox4Android stops syncing passwords when master password is used[4].
A2) Based on my observations Firefox4Android continue to sync bookmarks, tabs, ... even when it is still asking for master password and I am not providing it.
A3) Based on A1 and A2 it looks like that, recovery key is not encrypted using master password.
A4) Based on A3 anybody who gets physical access to the Android device, can get recovery key, setup synchronization on PC and obtain all the passwords!
Please let me know, if I missed something. As it looks to me, using synchronization on Firefox4Android is not secure even if you use Master Password.
Currently I see possible workaround for this issue:
    1) Disable master password on Firefox4Android
    2) Setup synchronization
    3) Let passwords, bookmarks, synchronize
    4) Disable synchronization (deleting synchronization account should delete recovery key)
    5) Enable master password
Only security issue with this workaround may be, that recovery key may be readable from the NAND flash for a while, because of the wear-leveling techniques. Possible workaround for this, would be generating new recovery key, after performing each synchronization with Android.

I would need a help, how to use Firefox Sync safely on Android devices, without that crazy workaround. I believe I am not the only person having this problem and somebody has find out something more straight forward.

  • My Laptop with Synced Firefox crashed and i had to do a fresh install, how can i retrieve all the synced data from the Mozilla Servers

I had set up Firefox sync on my Windows 7 Laptop which crashed and I had to reinstall windows. I used to be able to share content with my Firefox synced Android too. Is there a way i can retrieve the synced data from the Mozilla servers? I tried to set up sync on my new installation on a Mac 10.6 but when i click on Set-up Sync it asks me:
    # Set-up new sync account (i already have one)
    # I already have a sync account
When i select the second option it tells me to Add a device. I went in the "Sync Options" and tried the replace all data on this computer with my sync data, but nothing happened. When i try to connect from my Android it also asks me to add a device with the 3 boxes with letters in them.
So in both the cases it is asking me to "Add a device" but i cannot connect to my sync account in either case to sync data from there

Please search the forums. This has been covered here extensively.

  • Firefox sync has wiped all my data!!!

My laptop's disk crashed, so I've just installed a new one, and thought "OK great, I have Firefox Sync, it'll have my passwords and bookmarks saved". Did it hell!? I used to use a plugin for syncing my passwords and bookmarks, which worked beautifully, but it stopped running after Sync came out. Now Firefox Sync has seemed to have deleted ALL of my bookmarks and passwords because I did not have a "sync key". How do I request my data to be restored? There was a LOT of information stored in there that I NEED! Please can somebody provide me with a solution, I'm happy to pay an admin fee or whatever it is just to restore this information.
    - Justin

    Hi JustinN,
I'm sorry to read that you had issues with your hard drive and that it caused a reset of your Sync account.
Unfortunately Sync is not a back-up system and it's main purpose is to synchronize your data across devices not to store it. To ensure this is done in a secure way the system uses a [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/where-can-i-find-my-firefox-sync-key#w_what-is-the-sync-key-used-for key] that you only know. It's vital that you keep a copy (i.e. a back up) of this key to ensure that you would have access if anything happens to your main device (i.e. your laptop).
Once you have reset your account you have literally deleted all the information under the previous key. This is performed for security reasons, to avoid anyone accessing your private date, and it can't be undone.
I'll encourage you to back up all your important information either in a cloud service or in a different physical device (i.e. dvds, portable hard-drives, etc).

  • Harddrive died, need to get my sync data from old firefox to new

So far all methods of getting data off the drive as failed, otherwise I'd just rip the app data out of it....
The real issue here is that I had about 30 tabs open, and a ton of important bookmarks I added recently that i didnt get a chance to backup manually. I figured firefox sync would work but so far it hasnt done anything. I must be doing something wrong. I think it might've actually overwritten my sync data with my blank one..which would be freaking terrible, years of important data is on that account. This whole process was really confusing and none of the tech support topics on here have helped.

I know it's not meant for backup, but then there should definitely be a warning added in the situation I described above. When you click "I dont have access to the other device" " It should give a warning saying "Your sync data will be overwritten" or something like that. The instructions and such were not written well for this situation.
Is there absolutely no way to extract the data from my android? I've been looking for 3rd party solutions to no avail so far. And since you didn't answer it before, I'm guessing a rollback to Dec.24th on my sync-data is no-go. I still have the original sync key if that would make a difference at all on your end.

I have a sync account and used to keep sync with Firefox server. Now computer got re-installed(OS) and want to sync data from Firefox sync server. But I am unable to setup as i don't have sync key.

hello, for the old sync system in firefox 28 and below you also had to sign up with a mail address and password originally - to connect firefox to the old account you would need to have all those three pieces (mail, password & recovery key) available to you unfortunately...

  • Firefox sync not syncing data between device

Although Firefox sync syncing, data does not advice.

It worked!! Thank you so much! Now, may I ask what happened? I feel like if this sort of thing happens again in the future I will have a better understanding of exactly what '''services.sync.clusterURL''' is and why resetting it resolves syncing issues. FYI I deleted some empty folders that were created when this whole issue started and forced an immediate sync and the problem device was no longer a problem. I performed this action on my laptop i.e. the problem device and on my desktop PC so I could thoroughly test the two-way communication and after syncing on either device the changes were reflected on the other.

  • How can I restore all of my synced data from Firefox 4 (Win) to Firefox 5 (Mac)

Because of a computer problem, I can no longer access the data on my previous installation of Firefox 4 on a windows computer. I've recently started using a new mac computer, and I can't seem to restore the data using Firefox sync. I'm certain that sync was enabled on the previous installation as I've had it syncing with my mobile phone. How can I fix this issue?

  • How often does Firefox Sync back-up data? I see there is no preference selection allowing you to change the pre-set frequency (whatever that interval may be).

How often does Firefox Sync back-up data? I see there is no preference selection allowing you to change the pre-set frequency (whatever that interval may be).

However, the sync action only triggers every 60-minute and there is no user-configurable option provided. Although one can put a Sync icon onto the toolbar for easier access, it is still far from practical needs.
To unlock this limitation, do the following:
    1) Type “about:config” at the address bar
    2) Search for “services.sync.syncInterval”
    3) Change the value from 3600000 (milliseconds = 3600 seconds = 60 minutes) to any value (in millisecond) of your choice
    4) Close and restart Firefox
The Sync action will now trigger at the interval you just set.

  • Deleted my navigation data on a browser using Firefox Sync

Yesterday I started using a private tab in Firefox for Android, but I accidently switched to a regular tab. And an unwanted site got registered in my history and as auto-complete sugestion... I didn't find any way to remove these individual entries, I got desperate so I deleted the whole navigation data in Firefox for Android. I use Firefox Sync and I still have my old data in my laptop (it uses Ubuntu), but I tried and I can't get the old data back in Android.
    I have 3 questions:
    - Is is possible to delete indivual entries of history and auto-complete suggestion in Firefox for Android?
    - Is it possible to get the old navigation data back in my Android device?

    HI,
    Yes and Yes.
    # you can open a new tab and see the history list. Tap and hold the unwanted history and select "Remove"
    # You would have to sync the device to the account. Also you can swipe to history on a new tab and swipe between history and history from today after is syncs to confirm if it is there.

  • Can I sync my data from x marks to Firefox sync?

x marks is not working with my fire fox so can I import that data from x marks to firefox sync?

No, not directly. Firefox Sync works with the data that is '''''in''''' Firefox, it can't import data from another application or from another service like Xmarks.
