Firefox unusable; reset, uninstall & reinstall fail; I am at a loss.

About a month and a half ago, my Firefox started freezing. I soon gave up as it became unusable, but I only did so after changing some settings for running Adobe Flash and also running a reset on Firefox (retaining my profile information).
I would like to reuse Firefox, so I trawled through the various support forums, gave up and decided to reinstall Firefox completely, after having exported my bookmarks. I followed instructions and also deleted any Firefox folders (including in AppData for all users); I then deleted all 'folders' that I could find in the Registry. Then I rebooted.
When I opened Firefox, it immediately crashed again. Looking at the forums, I checked my plugins using 'plugincheck'. The only vulnerable ones were Java (which is apparently the latest) and "Shockwave FlashShockwave Flash 12.0 r0 ". I tried to update Flash, but Firefox crashed as I tried to do it.
I then went to a new page (ft.com), and immediately got the now common error, 'Plugin container for Firefox has stopped working', and Firefox completely freezes. Generally I have to use the Task Manager to close it.
It's very confusing for me. Yet I built my PC and am fairly technically able. I have spent about four hours on this today - and I just don't have much time to spend troubleshooting.
I have seen that I can enter 'about:config' in the address bar, search for dom.ipc and Set dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to 'false'. I did not do this, but it was a suggestion made on a support query. The person reinstalled Windows a month or so later, so perhaps this was not the best fix.
I have also run Firefox in Safe mode, and the same 'Plugin container' problem occurs. I have seen that my anti-malware program, McAfee, does not block 'plugin-container.exe' and Firefox has full internet access.
I would appreciate a sensible road map for fixing this issue.

Hi Cor-el,
I tried to load WinDbg, but I could only find one version of the Windows 7 SDK.
I used:<br />
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/hh852365
being the link from<br />
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_with_WinDbg
The latter says I need a 32-bit version, but when I downloaded the file<br />
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8279<br />
under the heading<br />
Standalone Debugging Tools for debugging Windows XP and Windows Vista<br />
it didn't give me an option for 32-bit file.
I tried to search Microsoft for a Windows 7 version of Windbg, but I couldn't find one.
As noted earlier, I cannot use the Firefox crash reporter, because Firefox hangs, rather than crashes.
The file in the x64 WinDbg is shown below. The problem I noted is that it would not start Firefox.
I tried Debug/Go, but Firefox would not start.
I think I need the 32 bit version of WinDbg, but I don't know where I can find it.
Can you help and more?
Best regards,
euser01

I have actually been having this issue for over a year now with the previous versions. The browser always crashes right after I start it, but it seems work well in safety mode. I have tried resetting the Firefox, disabling all the add-ons in safety mode, and reinstalling the application, but none of these methods seem to work. Here are the crash reports I have after I installed the newest version tonight:

  • Help needed: PS CC2014 Update failed, then after uninstalling reinstall failed. Initial error code U44M1I210 (when update failed), now error -55 (reinstall fail)

I tried to update Photoshop CC 2014, but it failed at 75%, with error code U44M1I210. After restarting my system, it still failed so I uninstalled the app, per this article: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-u44m1i210-installing-updates-ccm.html
Now the reinstall won't complete, and I'm getting error -55. The one other article that seemed relevant looks like the person had to uninstall and reinstall all his Adobe software after creating a new admin account on his computer (When I try to update I get an U44M1I210 error message, "Unable to extract the downloaded files" - help please, applies to latest Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop CC), and I'm hoping there is a better solution than the hours that will involve.
    Running on OSX 10.7.5.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I need to take a test for a staffing company. They use Java to administer the test. My Firefox does not see Java even though it is installed in my computer. Neither does the test see Java. The testing company had the solution of try another computer.

    Nope, still no go. Thanks!

  • WMV plugin gives black screen. WMV works outside Firefox. Already uninstalled/reinstalled.

I was having trouble converting and MP4 file to WMV using WinAVIVideo Converter. I needed to download a new set of codecs which fixed the problem. I was able to convert the file and play it in Windows Media Player. However, if I load the WMV file to a website and click on it there, it will not play in Firefox. I've tried disabling all the plugins other then the Windows Media Player plugin and I tried uninstalling the plugin and reinstalling it. None of those things has worked. Is there a updated Windows Media Player dll that I could install?

  • Firefox will not open, and I can't uninstall/reinstall because it says "close Firefox first"

After running Ccleaner today (and it asked me to "close Firefox or the internet cache will not be cleared", but Firefox was closed or so I think), I can't open Firefox at all; double-clicking the Firefox icon on the desktop does nothing, and no other way works. I thought of doing an uninstall/reinstall but it says "close Firefox first" - but for me it is truly closed.

I click to start FF (shortcut, directly on program file, etc.) and I get an hourglass for a couple of seconds like it's starting, then nada. As mentioned, I see FF show up as a process in Task Manager for about 3 seconds, then disappear.
Solutions I've tried include: Uninstall/reinstall on the same drive and a separate drive, registry cleanup/optimization w/Norton Utilities, full scan for malware/viruses with Norton, stopping some autostartup programs that were installed and in use while FF was running fine.

  • I would like to uninstall firefox 4 and then reinstall it, but how do I save my book marks?

I would like to uninstall firefox 4 and then reinstall it, but I don't want to lose all of my bookmarks. The actual problem is a persona that won't stay changed. We change it, but every time we close Firefox it goes back to the Persona we changed it from when we start up Firefox again. I was just planning on uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, but, like I said, I don't want to lose my bookmarks. How do I save my bookmarks in Firefox 4?

You could always remove/disable the Persona that you don't want. Go to Add-ons > Appearance, and then just disable/remove the offending Persona.
Though, if you really want to save your bookmarks:
Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Which will open the Library > Look for Import and Backup > Backup...> and it will prompt to you save the file somewhere. To add them back into Firefox, go back to the library > Import and Backup again > Restore > Choose File... > and then open the file you saved earlier.

When I select the task manager, there is no "firefox" under process. I have tried checking to make sure that the "read only" box is not checked under the profile properties. it seems like my only option now is to create a new profile. However, the profile manager won't even come up because it says firefox is running in the background. So frustrating!

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
You can force Firefox to create a new default profile if you remove the profiles.ini file.

You can find that file here:
    C:\Users\&lt;user&gt;\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\
The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.

  • Even after uninstalling, reinstalling Firefox, the Firefox profile folder is empty, and I get the message "Firefox is still running and not responding close firefox...

Even after uninstalling, reinstalling Firefox, the Firefox profile folder is empty, and I get the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." I have followed all the directions I can find, on my computer and Firefox Support. Still, the same message comes up, and "firefox" is not shown in my Windows Task Manager.
    What can I do?

Delete the profiles.ini file and let Firefox create a new default profile.
