First Java Web Solution

Ok, I have a group project for school. The basic idea is a web page that you sign up for, enter in your name, address, ect... and it will show you a list of possible people for a carpool.
My question is, what technology is good to use for something like this. I know this is a little vauge but I'm just trying to get and idea of what to use.
One option was to use PHP and MySQL, but the guy in my group that knows that only knows how to do it on Linux and we may not be hosting on Linux. I am fairly sure Java has alot of ability in this area, but I don't know where to start (I've only done application programing).

Well, Java is THE prog language of choice for web based applications. ;-)
Java has a fair support for DB usage - see JDBC forum and tutorials for more info. Works nicely with oracle, but integrates with almost any other major DB (Access, IBM DB2, ...).
Since you might want to create dynamic web content and applets suck, you might want to look into Servlets or better yet JSP (Java Server Pages). Search the web for information on the Apache Web Server and the Resin or Tomcat Servlet engines. If you already know HTML and JavaScript, JSP are an easy way to get into web programming ...

  • First Java Web Start download doesn't update, second time does

I'm using Java Web Start with our application. This release we upgraded to java 1.5 from 1.4. Now I have a few PCs, not all, that do not get updates the first time they launch the application. But when the launch it the second time they get the download. The jnlp didn't change between releases? Any suggestions? I'm not using lazy loads, in fact I'm using the default which should be eager.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I have similar situation. At the machine is installed Java 1.6 u1. Setup first version of application. After deploy second version of application and run application start update, but console show that application use old packages. At the same time main package is uploaded? I'd try to use <update check="always"?> but there are no positive result.
At the same time then installed Java 1.6 u2, all works fine.
Any suggestion, how it could be resolved, without Java 1.6 u2 installation?

  • Application started using Java Web Start doesn't launch the first time

I have a Facebook photo uploader application that I plan to distribute using Java Web Start. I'm using Java 6u4 on Windows XP SP2 with 2GB of RAM. I have Java 6u3, Java 6u4 and Java 5 u14 installed and I'm sure the one used is Java 6u4.
I signed my application and make use of all security settings.

You were right my XML file was not correct. I still couldn't find a valid JNLP validator. Sun has to provide that.>No they don't (have to supply a validator for their own document type, though it makes sense to do so), but yes they do (provide a tool that validates XML against schemas). Java can validate XML against a DTD or XSD.
Check these two threads (and chase the links) for more details.

I had a tool on my site based largely on Piotr's codes, that linked to a valid JNLP DTD and XSD, but unfortunately my site is offline at the moment. Andy assures me that the JNLP 6.0 DTD has been corrected for the developer ..download tutorials of web start, though the online (web site) version may still be invalid.

  • Which solution should I adopt? Applet or Java Web Start?

    Hi,
I am developing a web application which should print cards through a printer in the client side.
I would like to use a web start aplication to execute JNI calls in client side, but I am considering a possible solution the use of an Applet aplication to execute that.
My question is "Which solution should I adopt?"
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Regards.

I would go for Java Web Start, since it is:
    a wonderful tool
    easy to use
    gives you full control
you don't have to start your browser to print them cards
But wait for better qualified responses as I haven't written an applaet since school.

  • What is the right  way to display a table in Java web dynpro using a node.

    Hi experts,
I am trying to show a node of cardinality 0...n as a table in an adobe form in Java web dynpro. But its not showing it properly. Can anybody please tell me what is the right way to display a table on adobe form using a node of cardinality 0...n or 1...n in Java Webdynpro.  In ABAP webdynpro, we can drag and drop a node of cardianlity 0...n or 1...n to  show as a table and it works fine. Is the same possible in Java webdynpro also. Please help.
    Thanks and Regards.
    Vaibhav Tiwari.

Please refer to my post.. you will get the answer
Dynamic Table -  same data repeating in all rows
Special care should be taken in designing the context for table attribute.
The attribute type singletone also plays a important role. I have this doubt from the beginning when you have reported this problem for the first time but finally you marked it as solved so i thought there might be some other issues but again when you reported that again i did some analysis.
Now coming to final solution :
For designing a table in adobe interactive form you have consider following
You have to design the view context upto three level, I am explaining you the properties
PDFDataSource (Parent Level1) - Cardinality 1:1 - Signetone -True - This is assigned to datasource
    TableList (Parent Level2) - Cardinality (1:1) - Signetone -True
    TableWrapper(Parent Level3) - Cardinality (0:n) - Signetone -True
TableData (Parent Level4) - Cardinality (0:1) - Signetone - false (This is the main point)
Then under TableData value node, you have to put all your table attributes.
This Value Node name can be anything but hierarchy should be same as I have mentioned above.
Please try out these steps and get back to me if you have any doubt.

  • Accessing libraries from java web start

    hi guys,
I am new to forums and sorry if this question has been posed before. I am trying to access jogl.dll and jogl_cg.dll through java web start. These libraries are getting downloaded on the client machine as a jar file. I am using the following commands to access these files

    System.loadLibrary("jogl_cg");
Its giving me the follwing error

I am getting unsatisfied link error as its searching for another library which jogl_cg.dll depends upon. Can anybody suggest me what other library do i need to attach and the way i am accessing the libraries using system.loadlibrary is correct or not
I would appreciate your help in this regard.
    Thanks in advance,
    ravi ananthuni.

Actually you're correct. There was a resource missing.
The error was in the way I was packaging mail.jar. This archive has resources located in the META-INF subfolder inside the jar file. I'm running on Windows 2000, and I was expanding the mail.jar file, and then recreating and signing the archive using the Netscape utility signtool with the -Z option:
    signtool -k <mycert> -d <keystore_path> -Z mail.jar <expanded JAR directory>.
When creating the JAR file, the META-INF folder is deleted and replaced with the META-INF entries for the JAR you've just created. The other resources packaged in the META-INF are overwritten, and so the signed mail.jar did not work properly -- hence the NoSuchProvider exception.
For reference the solution is to sign the directory without creating the jar file:
    signtool -k <mycert> -d <keystore_path> <expanded JAR directory>
and then create the jar file from the signed directory using another archiving utility. I used the command line interface for Winzip 8.0.
    cd <expanded JAR directory>
    wzzip -rp ..\mail.jar *
    http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/cms/41/adm_gide/app_sign.htm#1012833
    Thanks!
    -- Eric.
    Hi,
you suppose that the .jar files are not signed
    correctly,
but what should have gone wrong?
You can check that each .jar is correctly signed with
    the jarsigner tool:
    jarsigner -verify -verbose foo.jar
If all your jars are reported to be signed, the only
other error I can imagine regarding signing is the
"all .jars referenced by one .jnlp must be signed
by the same key" rule. (Read Section 5.4 of the
    jnlp 1.0.1 spec).
    javax.mail.NoSuchProviderException: No provider for
    Address type: rfc822
files to be listed as resources, Java Web Startfails
to launch my application (unsigned application
requesting unrestricted access to system).I would have expected the latter error, if you
    have a signing problem.
That first error looks like something different,
perhaps the app is looking for a resource that
    defines rfc822 behaviour.

    Marc

  • Calling java web dynpro from ABAP

    Hi!!
    I have a double problem!
First I want to call a java web dynpro application from ABAP. I managed to do it using :
    call method cl_gui_frontend_services=>execute
      exporting
        document = url
      exceptions
        others   = 1.
Where url is the java application url with parameters. It's working...
...but here comes the second problem : i need SSO So first solution is not sufficent.
    Can anybody help?

Ok looking for the solution i figure out that it won't be possible anyway, i need a first log to the portal in order to issue a logon ticket before any attempt of SSO authentication.

  • "The Java Web Services" - ant install

Hi, I recently downloaded "The Java Web Services" and "The Java Web Services Tutorial".
And I've reached the Creating the Build Properties File portion of the tutorial:
    http://java.sun.com/webservices/docs/1.0/tutorial/doc/GettingStarted2.html#73059
I'm using Windows ME and I have no idea where to put the build.properties file.
Can anyone give me any suggestions? I am successfully able to
    ant compile
    but I can't get
    ant install
to work once I have done the ant compile and I suspect this is because of me not having the build.properties file set... although it could be unrelated to that.
    when I try to use:
    ant install
I get the following error at the command prompt:
    C:\tim\programs\jwsdp-1_0\docs\tutorial\examples\gs\build.xml:46: java.io.IOExce
ption: Server returned HTTP response code: 401 for URL: http://localhost:8080/ma

    utorial%2Fexamples%2Fgs%2Fbuild
Now tomcat is running on the correct port (8080) and the directory being referenced in the above URL exists. Am I supposed to map tomcat to a particular file system or something?
    Thanks,
    Tim
PS I have another post in this forum (it contains only my first question concerning the build.properties file), so if you would like the Duke dollars for both posts, feel free to post in both threads and if your answer helps me out, I'll give you the Dollars from both threads.

  • Seeking advice with concept / design of a Java Web Services Application

    Hi all,
After a week of searching the internet I'm not sure how which projects, services, etc. I should use to develop my application. Please could someone offer some advice?
Application outline (Java application running on Linux):
    1. Wait for an instruction from a Windows WCF application. Instruction contains a list of domain names and one or two other parameters.
    2. Perform queries upon those domain names (find if they are registered, etc. - takes 10-20 mins to do complete list)
    3. Send back results to WCF application.
    Solution 1 (first idea):
    1. Create SOAP web service using Java Web Services / Apache to listen for requests. Executes a Java Client Application upon request.
    2. Java Client Application performs the queries...
    3. Java Client Application sends results to the Windows web service.
    Solution 1 Problems:
    a) Using 2 applications, they won't be able to share the same memory.
    b) The whole process will be slow (having to pass the domain names from the service to application and execute the application each time) - A quick response is critical.
    c) Would like is for the whole process to be done under one application, sharing the same memory.
    Solution 2:
    1. Create a Java Daemon from scratch listening for an incoming SOAP message (no web service like Apache/Tomcat involved).
    2. Query the domain names in a new thread inside the Java Daemon
    3. Send the results back via SOAP.
    Solution 2 Problems:
Cannot find examples of how to create a SOAP service from scratch. E.g. creating a WSDL file based on my application; converting application methods to SOAP-callable methods easily (without writing a framework).
With all the Java tools and projects out there - Java EE, Glassfish Project - there must be a very easy way to achieve this seemingly simple task. Please can someone offer some advice?
    Many thanks for reading this.

You just need an app server like Tomcat. If I'm not wrong, Tomcat is a Servlet container.
Servlets aren't deactivated when they don't receive
    any request for some time?
How can I deploy an application to Tomcat in order to
keep it always active?I don't know what you mean. Tomcat is an application that is always running. In what way are the Servlets deactivated?
    Apache Axis: http://ws.apache.org/axis/
Yes I'm collecting some info about this... let's see
    it!
Finally, to be more clearer... I don't want to start
a new application at each invocation (something like
getting the request, instantiating the necessary
classes and executing them) but to call an already
running app at each invocation (so, getting request
and invoking, in a manner that I don't know, the
running application). The container manages this. If you have data that must remain loaded, you can associate it with the class (use a static modifier.) This will complicate threading, however.
I can use Axis to get the request, but it also grants
me that my app will always be active?I think you are just using the wrong terminology here. What I think you are asking is whether the resources will be loded into memory at all times. If you want to ensure this behavior, you need to associate the data with a class. I'm not 100% positive, but I don't think Tomcat will unload classes in normal circumstances.

  • Problem installing Sun Java Web Server

    Hi
I'm trying to install Sun Identity Server which need Sun Java Web Server...
I try to install identity server and web server using Sun Java Enterprise System Install Wizard...
When I came to page Identity Server:Sun Java System Web Server (3 of 6 ) and I entered Hostname, dir1.usmnet, I get an error pop-up window stating Host Name is not valid......but if I typed dir1.domain.com the error message didn' t appear.....
I'm using Solaris 9 on Intel platform. I have setup my network and able to ping to other valid hostname in my LAN....
FYI my network information are as follows
    /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    <my ip > dir dir.usmnet loghost
    /etc/hostname.elxl0
    dir1
    /etc/resolv.conf
    domain usmnet
    nameserver <dns server ip>
    search usmnet
    I have also setup /etc/netmasks and /etc/defaultrouter
When I type the domainname command, nothing appeared
What when wrong, I could ping to my dns server and to other computer in this LAN, could anybody give a suggestion ?

OK, found the solution by myself.
The Administrator's Guide mentiones the possibility to install a certificate with the wadm CLI, so I tried that:
    wadm> install-cert -v --config=www -y server -n Server-Cert /www.crt
    Please enter token-pin>
ADMIN4086: The Certificate could not be installedThe CLI Reference Manual says for the command install-cert, option --replace*:
"Note – --replace option of install-cert CLI is deprecated
and currently using this option may not work as expected.
For replacing a CA-signed certificate, users should delete the
cert using delete-cert CLI and then install the new one
    using install-cert CLI."
    wadm> install-cert -v --config=www -y server -n Server-Cert --replace /www.crt
    Please enter token-pin>
ADMIN4112: No Private key foundOK, so maybe if I had installed the first certificate (before generating the new CSR) that would have worked, I don't know.
Deleting the old cert doesn't work at once:
    wadm> delete-cert -v --config=www Server-Cert
    Please enter token-pin>
ADMIN4139: Certificate Server-Cert is being referred to by listeners: http-listener-2So before deleting you have to remove the certificate from the listener. Then:
    wadm> delete-cert -v --config=www Server-Cert
    Please enter token-pin>
    CLI201 Command 'delete-cert' ran successfully
    wadm> install-cert -v --config=www -y server -n Server-Cert /www.crt
    Please enter token-pin>
CLI201 Command 'install-cert' ran successfullyAfter re-adding the certificate to the ssl listener and deploying all the changes to the servers
    everything is fine.

    hi
    sorry for the delayed response.
well, the problem that you are trying to run into is very common when your server is getting good amount of load and uses large amount of servlet/jsp web applications running.
here is a url that you might find it a useful read
    http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc1.4.2/index.html#4.%20Types%20of%20Collectors|outline
if you do not want to take this trouble reading this document and want a quick solution, you do can do couple of things:
    - first understand how to size the heap
    http://java.sun.com/docs/hotspot/gc1.4.2/index.html#3.%20Sizing%20the%20Generations|outline
    - understand that the system is paused because jvm is busy doing garbage collection before allowing the web server to continue.
    - this can be avoided by properly tuning the jvm to how you think the server should behave. unfortunately, there is no miracle one one line to fix this issue
    - by careful and decent analysis of your system, you can tune your jvm properly that it can scale very well without any glitches.
though, you will need to take the pain to learn the garbage collection acronyms and see what's best suited for you.
    - first, you want to know what is happening inside the jvm before you proceed to optimize . you can do this by adding this option
    -verbose:gc -XX:+PrintGCDetails
How to add this option in the server.xml , is by doing something like
start admin server -> manager your server -> click Java tab
-> click on JVM Option in the left side
    -> Add this JVM option -verbose:gc -XX:+PrintGCDetails
    -> restart the server
-> note, you do NOT want to leave the above option in the production environment as this will tremendously slow your application and this is meant to be only for development purposes.
    - if your server is a multi processor server (has more than 1 CPU) and you want less pause time, you can typically try adding this jvm option to your server and restarting it.
    -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+CMSParallelRemarkEnabled
here are few other short cut , jvm options that you also try in your devleopment environment before going to production.
Server application(Like Web Server 6.1) running alone on a large multi-processor server with 4gb of physical memory.
    #java -server -XX:+AggressiveHeap
Two applications running on a large multi-processor server with 4gb of physical memory. Each java application instance is allocated a part of total system memory by an explicit specification of the maximum and minimum heap sizes.
    #java -server -XX:+AggressiveHeap -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m
(again, do your research before you use this option in the production environment)

  • What is Java Web Start?

    Hi
After installing Java 2 Platform Standard Edition v 1.4.2, Java Web Start link on the
    Windows 98 desktop.
What do I use Java Web Start for?
    Please reply soon.
    Thanks,
    Sincerely,
    Egan

Java Web Start software provides a flexible and robust deployment solution for Java technology-based applications based on the Java Community Process program (JCP). The technology is being developed through the JCP program as JSR-56: The Java Network Launching Protocol & API (JNLP), which provides a browser-independent architecture for deploying Java 2 technology-based applications to the client desktop.
Java Web Start technology works with any browser and any Web server. Each application developed for use with the Java Web Start software specifies which version of the Java 2 platform it requires, e.g., version 1.2 or 1.3, and each application runs on a dedicated Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
A main feature of the Java Network Launching Protocol and API technology is the ability to automatically download and install Java Runtime Environments onto the users machine.
For example, an application might depend APIs in Sun's Java Runtime Environment 1.3.0 (or later). When a user first accesses this application, the Java Web Start software will download all the needed files for the application, as well as download the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) if the requested version is not available locally. The ability to automatically download a JRE is one of the key features to ensure robust deployments. It ensures that the JRE that your application is tested on will be available on the user's machine, as well as make it possible to seamlessly upgrade to improved versions of the Java 2 platform over time.
The java.sun.com auto-download feature simplifies Java Web Start deployments because it makes commonly used software readily available for use with Java Web Start. Typically, only an extra line has to be added to a JNLP file to take advantage of this feature. In contrast, without the auto-download feature, developers would be forced to repackage and host the software themselves - adding a significant overhead to the deployment burden. As an added benefit to both developers and end-users, this minimizes the download time for an application since each JRE will be shared between multiple applications.

  • Long time to start Java Web Client (Analyzer 6.2.1)??

Does anyone know why Analyzer(6.2.1) takes a long time to start Java Web Client. Sometime it's even take more than 5 minutes. I think it is the Java Plug-in starting on the client computer. Any solution?

The key to Analyzer 6.2.1 running correctly is the version of Sun Java Plugin. The ideal version (most optimal) is 1.3.0_02.Secondary to this if Analyzer performs OK once you are logged in then it could be down to the speed of your connection. The applet compiles at runtime (unlike Analyzer 5 which was a one time download). The delay in getting to the login screen could be this download.Hope this helps.Paul ArmitageAnalitica Ltd.www.analitica.co.uk

  • Unable to run my application using java web start

i have created one application and use java web start to download the application. all the files are succesfully downloaded but when i try to run the application an expected error occur. this only happen in my machine but not in other machine i'm currently using
    -jsdk1.4.2
    -windows 2000 professional 5.00.2195 service pack 3
    -pentium III 870 Mhz
    -x86-based PC
    -RAM 256 Mhz
Anyone knows why, plz help me with this puzzle

Please post the information from the Web Start "Exception" and "Wrapped Exception" tabs when the error occurs (I assume the error was in fact unexpected ;-)
A blind stab in the dark would be that you don't have write permission to the cache directory on the second machine. Also worth checking that the proxy settings on the second machine are the same as the first (if they are on the same network).
