First time an SQL expression is placed on report a DB SELECT executes

The same problem can be created using the normal Crystal Reports XI Release 2 developer environment and/or code (not only a code issue). I'm using CR XI.
Symptom:
We dynamically auto generate SQL Expressions, Tables, Joins, Formula's and anything through C# and place it onto the Crystal Report through code via run-time user input in a web environment. I recieved a notification from one of my DB admins that crystal reports is causing massive memory consumption via unknown SELECT statements that have no joins and/or WHERE criteria.
Some Detective Work/More Info:
After using Microsoft "SQL Profiler" along with Crystal, I understand what is happening but don't know the "work around" to make Crystal stop executing the following SELECT scenario.
Anytime I create a new "SQL Expression" for the first time and then physically "drag and drop" it onto the report then Crystal is executing a "silent" SELECT statement against the database in the design environment. I'm calling it "silent" because I need MS SQL Profiler to see it happen. I'm guessing that this is used for validation or something but this is causing problems when automatically generating a report in a production environment.
Steps to re-create:
1. Open MS "SQL Profiler" and get it running. (will show Crystal Engine silently executes the SELECTS)
2. Add a new "SQL Expression" to your report.
3. Drag and Drop your new "SQL Expression onto your report
4. You will see that Crystal has created an SQL query and executed it against your database in design environment.
The Problem:
I can see under normal circumstances why you might want this funtionality (if it's actually used for the Crystal Engine to validate your SQL Expression). But, What also makes this functionality horrible is that on my behalf Crystal is creating these SELECT statements and using cross joins which is a major problem in a production environment. As a result, huge record sets are being created on our DB Server. I don't believe that this has any purpose in a production evironment when the cross-joins can create huge amounts of results just for the sake of Crystal Internally validating a new SQL Expression placed onto a report. It would be nice to disable this functionality in production. I don't know a "work around" since these SELECT queries are created on my behalf by the Crystal Engine at design time (via code auto generation in production).
Questions:
Can this functionality be disabled to prevent a production server from incurring the execution of these queries?
Anybody else notice this and have a "work around"?

  • Install Labview DSC Run Time without SQL Express

    Hi
    I have an application of DSC run time that I tested successfully but now must be installed on a server and my client does not allow install an instance of SQL Server Express because he are already using the Enterprise version. What should I do to not install the SQL Server Express incorporated in the DSC Run Time and use the SQL Server Enterprise already installed on the server?

    Hello Jdrendon
    Did you try to install your application on a PC with an instance of the Enterprise version?
    Maybe another instance of SQL will not be installed in this case, because you already have a later version installed.
    The second possibility is just uncheck the option to install the SQL Server Express when you are installing your application.
    Let me know if it is possible and if it solve your problem.

  • First time using SQL PLUS

    oracle 10g, OS is XP pro, Database is mounted, and open.
    the user sysdba PW is oracle. Able to use command line sql: ie >sqlplus /nolog and connect / as sysdba
    when I exit SQL I ran sqlplusw, Login pops up.
    for user I used sysdba, press enter,
    the display wanted PW, I used oracle.
    It said user/pw do not match.
    How do I correct this problem ?
    eric

    I think you want to login to sqlplus but don't know user name and password avialable.
    Try these combination of user name and password :
    scott/tiger
    sys/change_on_install
    system/manager

  • Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Drivers 4.0.2206 timeout on first connection to SQL Server Express after it sleeps

    Our builds kick off and run integration tests. They are configured to hit a SQL Server Express server.
    If the builds have been quiet for a while, the first test to connect fails after stalling for 20 minutes.
    Subsequent tests are fine.
    Reversing test order does the same thing, with a different test.
    We noticed in the SQL Server express log the server saying it is waking up after being idle.
    Microsoft SQL Server Express with Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Drivers 4.0.2206.
    Connection times out after 20 minutes.Occurs with the first connection made after the SQL Server Express server wakes up from going to sleep.Connections after the first are just fine, until SQL Server Express sleeps.SSL enabled. Timeout duration for the connection failure is unaffected by setting timeout options for the connection.  Work around:
    cron-like job that runs every minute that makes a simple query on the server keeps the server from going to sleep.
    Has anyone else run into this?

    Hello,
    SQL Server Express will go to sleep if idle, this behavior is not configurable.
    When SQL Express transitions from idle to active some of the memory that was released needs to be reclaimed; this results is a slight lag during "startup time" when you're first connecting to SQL Express.
    The other sort of sleep occurs when a database with AUTO_CLOSE unloading itself after a period of inactivity. This can be resolved by setting AUTO_CLOSE to false.
    You can refer to the following blog about more details about this:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlexpress/archive/2008/02/22/sql-express-behaviors-idle-time-resources-usage-auto-close-and-user-instances.aspx
    You can try to upgrade the SQL Server Express to a non-free version to get rid of this.

  • Error in SQL Expression

    Hello All,
    I am having crystal reports XI and I am using OLE DB ADO connection for oracle driver to the DB.
    I took a correct SQL expression from a previous report which is working fine and then paste it in a new created SQL Expression in the new report. The exact tables are there. But when clicking on the tick button to check of there are some errors, a message is shown that : ORA-00942 table or view does not exist.
    Here is the SQl Expression:
    (select  MAX(intrates.RATE_DT)
    FROM INTRATES,SECTYPE,DEALS,SECISSUE
    WHERE sectype.thekey = "posnrpt"."SECTYPE"
    AND SECISSUE.THEKEY = SECTYPE.SECISSUE_ID
    AND LTRIM(RTRIM(UPPER(intrates.ISSUER_DETAIL_ID))) =LTRIM(RTRIM(UPPER('ID'||secissue.ISIN)))
    AND INTRATES.RATE_DT <= "posnrpt"."POSN_DT"
    I am wondering why it is working in a previous report which is created long time ago and now it is not working?
    Is it from the driver or I have to do further modifications!!!
    I am looking forward for your help.

    Good question, Jason.  The only officially supported use would be of the functions and operators explicitly listed within the editor.  The SAP Note referenced in my presentation gives a little more information:
    [1217871 - What is the intended use of 'SQL Expression' fields?|http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CBIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sdn.sap.com%2Firj%2Fscn%2Fgo%2Fportal%2Fprtroot%2Fdocs%2Foss_notes_boj%2Fsdn_oss_boj_erq%2Fsap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ%3D%3D)%2Fbc%2Fbsp%2Fspn%2Fscn_bosap%2Fnotes%257B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333233313337333833373331%257D.do&ei=FtWHTMrpCoTQ8wTutsHfDg&usg=AFQjCNFZG-Ta5JiZFAzXf2HC5GE7-QkJug]
    I'm sure the reason the SELECT statements aren't officially supported is that they aren't written in Crystal syntax.  What one is able to do with a SELECT statement depends on the database (Access, Oracle, MS SQL Server, etc..), type of database connection (Native, ODBC, etc..) the flavor of SQL being used, which is dependent on the previous two, etc.. Even the functions and operators available in the editor depend on the above conditions. What you see as available may not be what I see..
    So, while SAP can support the feature as a whole, they can't necessarily provide syntax support, nor guarantee effectiveness.  There's also very little documentation on them, as a result. A lot of what I've learned to do with SQL Expressions has been through trial and error.
    Personally, I prefer to build reports against Views, if possible, and Commands or Stored Procedures, if necessary. SQL Expressions are great, though, in a pinch against existing reports with performance or design issues.  In the case of the report above, I was able to dramatically increase performance and eliminate sub-reports  in an existing report that was written by another individual.  Without the SQL Expressions, I would have had to write even more complicated SQL and rebuild the report.
    Since I can use them and I know how powerful they can be, I'll keep using them until I can't. At this point in time, they work with Crystal Reports 2008, which has a very low adoption rate, and I haven't heard of them being deprecated in Crystal Reports 2011, which I expect to be around for several years, so I'm not too concerned.

  • SQL expression not working, newbie. Malformed?

    Hi, I'm a newbie to CR. I've got a report that works which I want to add a SQL expression field to that returns the text from a column in one table when another column in that table is equal to the string result of concatenating the values of two columns from a different table.
    This is my SQL expression. I'm using CR XI R2.
    SELECT
        "Windows_Notes"."NOTES_61"
    WHERE
        ("Windows_Notes"."KEY_61" = '"RMA_Detail"."RMANUM_52" + "RMA_Detail"."RMALIN_52"')
        AND ("Windows_Notes"."LINE_61" = '0000')
    There are actually two WHERE clauses as you can see above. Anyway, this isn't returning any data even though I can see in SQL Server Management Studio that the data is there. Even if I get rid of the concatenation and use a static value that I know should work (like '8000002501'), I get no results. As soon as I insert this SQL expression field into the report, the whole page is just blank. If I remove it again, everything shows up like before.
    Any hints or solutions? I just made my first report last night, so this may be a stupid question.
    Thank you.

    Thanks to you both for the performance tips. I got it working just before you guys answered with this line:
    {Windows_Notes.KEY_61} = {RMA_Detail.RMANUM_52}+{RMA_Detail.RMALIN_52} and {Windows_Notes.LINE_61} = '0000'
    And now I've run into yet another fun problem. This one may be more difficult to tackle. Sometimes there will be no rows returned from that query. If there is a result I am including a string in the report from Windows_Notes.NOTES_61 which just contains optional notes for RMA numbers in our company. (like a short description of the customer's problem)
    Sometimes there are no notes entered. When this is the case, the report is no longer showing those RMAs, heh. How can I get it to just display nothing in the notes column but still show the rest of the fields when that query returns no rows?
    I tried removing the previous code from the record selection forumula, then creating a formula field with the following:
    if ({Windows_Notes.KEY_61} = {RMA_Detail.RMANUM_52}+{RMA_Detail.RMALIN_52} and {Windows_Notes.LINE_61} = '0000') then (
        {Windows_Notes.NOTES_61}
    And I insterted that formula field onto the report instead of the Windows_Notes.NOTES_61 database column directly. It didn't work. I'm not clever enough after one day's experience with Crystal Reports...

    Hi Srivatsa,
    SQL Expressions is something the Database supports. We query the Client engine for a list of functions they make available. If the SQL Statement is not list it's not an option and therefore it won't work.
    Your work arounds are to use either a Stored Procedure, this is the most efficient way, all processing is done server side and CR simply waits for the data to format in the report. Another option is to use a
    Command Object, use one CO per report so try to get all data within the SQL statement. We simply pass the SQL to the server and wait for the result set, if you get an error it will be the SQL you typed in. Test in a SQL test tool first to confirm you are getting the data correctly.
    For more assistance in designing reports please post your report deisgn questions to the Reprot Design forums. I am moving this one to that queue.
    Thank you

    Hi Community,
    We are encountering a weird issue with GRC AC 10.0 and IE8. After logging in to NWBC and the clicking for the first time on my inbox hyperlink or a report hyperlink, the screen freezes and no pop-up appears. I have to hit the browser back button to go back to the NWBC screen and then when clicking on my inbox or the report hyperlink a second time, the pop-up with my inbox or the report selection criteria screen appears. Has anyone come across a similar issue? Cannot seem to find in on SCN or SAP Note search. Thanks!

    Hi Joerg
    did you see NWBC Web GRC v10 WSOD
    The comments in there imply it's an issue with IE8. Have you been able to try a different browser? There is a reference to specific IE8 note

  • Urgent: Getting FRM-41211 when calling reports from forms for first time.

    Hi,
    We are running into the FRM-41211 error, when the users try to call a report from a form. The report is called from a form in SYNCHRONOUS mode. This is the only report that is being called. No other report is

    Any ideas?? It's urgent...

  • Hyperion System 9.3.1 reports taking longer time for the very first time

    We are on Hyperion System 9.3.1. The Financial reports are taking longer time (like 2 to 3 minuter) for the very first time for each login. The subsequest reports are does work faster.
    The behaviour is same for the Production and Development environments.
    All the reporting services have given enough JVM heap size.
    FYI, Reporting and Workspace runngin on the same server. Workspace/Reporting are clusted in two servers. HFM app is running on different server. HFM web is on different server. Shared Services is also on running on different server.
    Any help would be greately appreciated.
    Thanks.

    The reason they run quicker the subsequent times, is because the data has already been cached in the system.
    You could try the usual tricks to speed the report up:
    - move items into POV
    - have children and parent in the same row
    - arrange dimensions in inverse outline order
    - remove excessive formatting
    - push report calculations back to the data source
    We have found that using lots of dynamically calculated members also slows down reports, so try and limit the number of these.
    Hope this helps. If not maybe give us an idea of how the report is created to see if other changes could be made.

  • Sql expression fields in subreports (CR XI)

    Post Author: yyu
    CA Forum: Data Connectivity and SQL
    Is it normal that the sql expression fields don't show up in a subreport?
    I don't see any. Does anyone know how? Thanks!

    Sorry for the delay getting back to you all.
    I set up a report against the xtreme database sample. Added the Customer table, and put the columns "Customer ID" and "Customer Name" on the report. I then created a new SQL Expression and entered the following:
    ( SELECT SUM(`Orders`.`Order Amount`) FROM `Orders`
      WHERE `Orders`.`Customer ID`=`Customer`.`Customer ID`)
    I could save the new SQL Expression, which is farther than I got in the real report. I added the SQL Expression field to the report. But when I try to preview the report, I get an error:
    Error in compiling SQL Expression :
    Failed to open a rowset.
    Details: ADO Error Code: 0x800004005
    Source: Microsoft JET Database Engine
    Description: Unspecified Error
    Native Error: 62411
    I suspect that's the MS Access version of the error I was getting with MySQL.

  • VO got executed but is not showing the rows on the page the first time

    Hi, Below are my senario:
    I have one jspx which contain a panel tab and 2 tabs inside it: tab A and tab B, under each tab is its own taskflow, jsff page, and its own AM and datacontrol also.
    tab A have a table
    tab b have a table with search panel. The view criteria that used to generate the search panel is not check "Run Automatically"
    What I am trying to do is in tab A, user can select some rows and click one button, then below action happen:
    1. the id of the selected rows will be pass to a AM method of tab B as string that separated by comma, and this AM method will execute the VO that the table of Tab B is based on
    2. set tab b disclosure to be true to show tab B
    3. The row that selected in Tab a will be shown in the table of tab b
    Below are the code in the AM of tab b, it is exposed to client and it will be invoked by the button actionlistener of Tab A from the bean:
    public void applyDashbaordViewCriteria(String listOfPS) {
    if (listOfPS != null) {
    PullSequenceSetupVOImpl psvo = this.getPullSequenceSetupVO2();
    ViewCriteria vc = psvo.createViewCriteria();
    vc.setName("PSDashboardVC");
    ViewCriteriaRow vcRow = vc.createViewCriteriaRow();
    ViewCriteriaItem vcItem =
    vcRow.ensureCriteriaItem(PullSequenceSetupVORowImpl.PULLSEQUENCEID);
    vcItem.setOperator(JboCompOper.OPER_IN);
    vcItem.getValues().get(0).setValue(listOfPS);
    vc.add(vcRow);
    psvo.applyViewCriteria(vc);
    psvo.executeQuery();
    However my issue here is:
    Whenever the first time entering the page, which will show tab A, I select some rows in the table and click the button, AM got executed correctly and before it leave above code, VO executed and row count is correctly match with what user selected in Tab A. However, the rows in the vo is not showing in tab B. Table in tab B show no rows.
    Workaround for the issue:
    If first time entering the page, I go to tab B first, without doing anything then come back to tab A, select some rows and click the button again, then this time, the row I selected start showing in the table of Tab B.
    So my question is, how can I solved this issue to make the selected rows show in tab B without going to tab B to load the page first? Is that something to do with datacontrol scope?
    I am using Jdev 11.1.1.3.0
    Thanks.

    Hi, now I think i know what is the root cause:
    I overide executeQueryForCollection and executeQuery method in the VOImpl that table of Tab B is based on. And I notice the following:
    Even when select row in tab A and click the button to call AM method to apply the view criteria and execute the query to return some row, when tab b loading the first time, I notice executeQueryForCollection is being fired again and invoked by executeEmptyRowSet.
    It looks to me that even thought before the page load, VO already executed and have some row, somehow when ADF load the page, it will empty all the rows in the VO. And also since I have a query panel which I uncheck the Query Automatically. So even my applied view criteria still there, but VO will not get re executed again and show the result.
    I think that is why this issue is happening. And also, that is why if I navigate to tab B first and come back to Tab A, now perform the same action, the selected rows start showing on the page.
    Anybody can help me how can I resolved this issue? And also, I don't want to check the "Query Automatically" of the view criteria that I used to genreate the search panel because it may impact the performance.
