Fix for MBP that froze, shows no screen?

My MBP 2.16 Core2Duo (early '07) suddenly froze. I forced shutdown (cntl-command-off) and it turned off. I get black screen, disk sound when cntrl/command/power pushed and the sleep light but nothing else. It will shut off (I think - the sleep light goes out) using the same command.
I reset Power Manager, battery charged all night and shows all green, case is very hot. Still will not boot or show any screen or screen color. I was running 10.5.4 with 2 GB ram and all had been fine. I had made no updates or changes recently, it has never been dropped. (I am on my trusty iBook G3 on 10.4.11 now but it is slow and does not have much information on its disk.
Since I am in Mexico and will not be in the US for months, any suggestions would be VERY appreciated. Apple support does not show repair stations in SE Mexico on the Yucatan and Mac is pretty much unknown here except for iPods. Shipping anything within Mexico is dangerous and shipping to the US a long and involved process. I have heard there might be a repair house 5 hours away in Merida or one 4 hours away in Cancun. I will begin looking but a home-brewed fix would be highly preferable.
I have an external fire wire drive with a cloned copy of the disk but it was not attached and I can't boot (or receive display) to use it.

Sig. Thanks for your quick reply - the full import of the catastrophe is beginning to hit me. Made worse by being on the edge of the jungle.
A few minutes before seeing your post I tried the original 10.4 disc 1 (Leopard discs are lost for now). The machine made its disk sound, light came on and the drive inhaled the disk which made running noises but no screen and eject button won't eject it so I shut it down again.
Battery shows 5 green lights and, when cntrl/command/start are pushed, white front light comes on. Drive seems willing to work. Nothing else. Same commands shut it down - or seem to.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:

Fix for AppleTV photo slide show music stopping after abut 20 minutes?

Just ran another series of tests ... I am now convinced that AppleTV's slideshow/screensaver is broken.
Too often it will 'get stuck' on one photo for minutes then show no photo and finally move on; in fact it is doing it right now.
I don't ever remember seeing this occur before the last upgrade.

  • Is Apple working on a fix for ios6 that will stop it from using huge data in the iphone 4s?

When I upgraded my iPhone 4s to ios6, it started using huge amounts of data.  My provider refuses to reimburse me.  Today they told me that Apple has acknowledged the problem and has fixed it in ois6.3.  However, ois6.3 is unavailable for the 4s, and my provider tells me that Apple has not acknowledged that the problem exists in the 4s.  They referred me to Apple.  However, because the phone is off warranty, I will have to pay $35 + tax to talk to an Apple rep--and surely Apple knows the problem extends to the 4s, because it is widely discussed on-line.  I have not seen any reference to whether Apple is working on a fix for the 4s.  Does anyone know?  I can't afford this much longer and am going to have pay a lot of money to switch phones.  And when I switch phones, it won't be an Apple, which will also make me sad--but it is ridiculous for them to produce a problem that is costing so much money and then not to acknowledge it exists.  I am hoping that having addressed it in the 5, they will now turn to the 4s.  Does anyone know?

Yeah, the 6.0.2 update was rolled out to deal with that issue amongs others. But getting it out for the older models was either not high priority or more complex than they anticipated. So the wait continues till it shows up on the update channel.
Pestering Apple Support might not get it done quicker, but at least will offer some sort of vicarious revenge and relief.

is there a fix for the screensavers that no longer work with Snow Leopard? some of the developers have came out with new versions, but a few of them have been abandoned by their authors. Is there a way to run those screensavers in 32 bit mode?

I know it doesn't help right now, but like all other OSs in the past, these types of things need to catch up since the bar has been raised once again...give it time and there will tons of entertaining s'savers out to pick from.

  • Is there a fix for Arial Narrow not showing up in InDesign? I need it!!

InDesign CS5, Windows7.  I am seeing where lots of people are having trouble, but has anyone found a fix?  Arial Narrow and it's font family is supposedly installed in Windows/Fonts, but is not available in InDesign.  Arial narrow only shows up under Arial as a family member, not its own family.  I NEED Arial Narrow Bold to work! I am behind schedule.

This problem is due to the offending fonts having the wrong "Preferred Family" and "Preferred Subfamily" names and it can be corrected using a Font Editor, such as the free version of Type light which can be downloaded from http://www.cr8software.net/typelight.html.
The process I found to work (in Windows 8 with Adobe Indesign CC and Office 2010) is as follows:
Open a File Explorer window and go to the system font library at C:/Windows/Fonts and double click on the Arial font (this has a special icon indicating that it contains multiple subentries)
Copy the fonts for Arial Narrow, Arial Narrow Bold, Arial Narrow Italic and Arial Narrow Bold Italic to a new folder on your desktop
Edit each of these copies using your font editor and change the  Preferred Family and Preferred Subfamily names (in Type light use the menu option Font>Names... then click the Advanced button)
The Preferred Family should be changed to Arial Narrow and the Preferred Subfamily should be either Regular, Bold, Italic, or Bold Italic as per the particular font you are editing (While you are there you could also make similar changes to the Arial Black font which has the same problem - in this case, make Preferred Family Arial Black and Preferred Subfamily Regular)
Save each font file back over the top of the one in the folder in your folder on the desktop (Save and replace) then open a new File Explorer window for that folder and drag the changed fonts back into their orginal location at C:/Windows/Fonts/Arial
Open a new File Explorer window and do a search on the C: drive for all instances of AdobeFnt*.lst then delete all of them
    Restart your computer

  • Fix for data that isn't returned in responseXML field

I have a problem where I have a very simple JSP that returns
me back a list of URLs that are modified to use the correct path
for where my application is running. This JSP doesn't return as a
text/xml MIME type, so XMLHttpRequest is returning the data in the
responseText field, no the responseXML field. Spry doesn't handle
it, but the fix is simple.
    In
    Spry.Data.XMLDataSet.LoadManager.CachedRequest.prototype.loadDataCallback,
    I add this code:
    if (!xmlDoc && req.xhRequest.responseText)
    xmlDoc =
    Spry.Utils.stringToXMLDoc(req.xhRequest.responseText);
    right above:
    this.doc = xmlDoc;
    this.state =
    Spry.Data.XMLDataSet.LoadManager.CachedRequest.LOAD_SUCCESSFUL;
This will check to see if the data could be in the
responseText field, and setup things appropriately.
I did figure out how to change my JSP so it returns, but the
above still could possibly useful, so I post it here.
    -d

Thanks for posting the workaround doug!
I was actually thinking of modifying the XMLDataSet so that
callers could get a hook when cases like this came up so they could
either flag an error if it was unexpected, or if they knew that
this non text/xml mime-type was really an XML format, go ahead and
parse the doc like you did in your case.
Another thing I was thinking of doing was splitting out some
of the XMLDataSet code into a class that it could derive from so
folks that wanted support for other HTTP based protocols had a
starting point which had most of the functionality they needed.

  • Anybody find cause/fix for movies that play one day and not another?

I have a lot of movies. I find that at times I go back to watch a movie I have watched before and it errors saying cannot play movie, unrecognized format. Though I have watched it before on the AppleTV without issue.
I try again maybe a week later and it works. Then later, others won't play.
Very frustrating when I know the movie works as I have watched it before.
So, just curious if anybody else has seen this and knows why or at least a quick fix to get it to work. Rebooting the ATV and/or computer doesn't work.

It happens (when it does, as mentioned, doesn't always have issue) when streaming a movie.
eg: I get new movie. I have sync options to sync 5 most recent unwatched movies and 10 most recent unwatched tv shows and all music.
So new movie is on ATV. I watch. All is good.
When done ATV does it's thing and takes it off and brings over the next most recent to keep my count at 5 local to the ATV.
Later I want to watch again when wife gets home or something. Here is when sometimes I can watch (it streams) and other times (just happening more and more lately) it will say unrecognized format.
Yet if I go pick another movie that I know is not local to the ATV thus will stream, it will work. Just random various movies won't.
If I go to iTunes and mark one that isn't playing as unwatched (and it was more recent than another on the ATV) then it will sync over to the ATV and be local again and play fine again.
Thing is it doesn't happen all the time. Some stuff will stream fine, other times won't. Real pain and has only been getting worse lately.
Guess I know that the error message of "unrecognized format" is just wrong and it that must be some general message because I know it is in right format.

  • Possible fix for superdrives that don't burn

Following my hunch, detailed below, that there is nothing wrong with the Superdrives that suddenly stop burning I downloaded this tiny CD/DVD burning software: http://www.centromedia.com/en/products/discburner/index.html
It's free, but very limited in what it can do. One little issue it has is that any files you want to burn have to be in a folder (you have to burn the folder). Anyway, I downloaded it with the intention of using it to test burn a data CD - something my eMac no longer does with Toast 6.
Well, I downloaded the free program and burnt my first Data CD within a minute. It worked first time and the date CD was recognised after ejecting it and putting it mack in the drive.
Now, the program is limited in its functionality - it is free after all - but I feel I have proved my point. There is nothing wrong with my Superdrive. It worked with this program.

  • Fix for keyboards that are not working or unresponsive after leopard

You are using sidetrack, a 3rd party trackpad control panel.

  • Recommend anti-glare LCD monitor for MBP 13

Hello, I need a decent quality antiglare type monitor to be the external monitor for graphics work with my MacBook Pro 13 inch unibody. I just tried an HP ZR24w but was not able to get it working. The monitor would light up for one second and my desktop showed, then it would immediately go dark. Apple support could not help, HP support  kept me on hold for 45 min. and then dropped my call.
Unfortunately Apple no longer makes antiglare monitors for its graphics professional community. If they did I would buy an Apple monitor. I am currently using an old Apple Cinema Display but it has a bad case of creeping screen defects and looks terrible.
Is anyone out there sucessfully using an external monitor with MBP that has an antiglare screen, does 1920 x 1200 res and has an IPS LCD?
The usual suspects that people recommend for graphics work in the mid-range are Dell ultra-sharp and HP LP2475w. Since I do less graphics work than I used to I thought the ZR24w would be a good affordable option, however since I could not get it to work I am concerned that none of these other monitors will be compatible either. Buying and returning vis mail order is expensive... would really appreciate hearing what other people are using.
Please let me know what connector you are using. I tried the ZR24w with both DVI and displayPort but neither of these options work for me. Apple tech support was stumped and blamed it on HP.
    Any thoughts?
    TIA!

There should be a anti-glare option on ALL Mac's, however the 13" is certainly the next prime candidate for one given that they rolled out anti-glare for the 17" first, then the 15" next.

  • Fix for iTunes and Stuttering Audio Upon Opening Other Programs

This was answered for me in another mega thread, so I thought I would create it's own topic in hopes of helping as many people as possible.
This is a fix for those that have the problem of iTunes 7 working fine alone, but when opening another program such as a game, etc., iTunes 7 begins to stutter and crackle. This fix assumes that otherwise, the program works correctly (gapless, and other issues are not a problem, no blue screens of death, etc.)
    First off my machine:
Dell XPS 3.4 ghz Pentium Dual Core
    2 Gig RAM
Creative SB X-Fi audio card, latest drivers installed
    Observed problem:
Running iTunes 7, audio sounded fine, but opening another program such as UT2004 (first person shooter game) caused iTunes 7 to stutter and crackle.
This was not an issue in iTunes 6.05. I had to upgrade as I just purchased the new Nano.
As an aside, I have another sound card on my computer, an older Layla Echo 24 professional soundcard, drivers are about 3 years old. When selecting this card, this problem does not occur.
    The Fix:
    Close iTunes 7
Upgrade your sound card drivers (just to eliminate that as an issue)
Upgrade to latest Microsoft direct X version:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A -9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en
    Start
    Run
    Type: dxdiag
Click "sound 1" or similarly named tab
Slide bar to "basic acceleration" (mine was at full, and basic is two clicks to the left)
    Exit
Restart iTunes 7, and startup music
    Open game, or other program
Your music in iTunes 7 should now be stutter/crackle free
This may not work for everybody, but it worked for me so I thought I would pass this along.
    Good luck!
(resisting urge to type some snarky remark to Apple that somehow their programmers are indeed as human as Microsoft programmers)...oops...sorry about that.
Dell XPS Windows XP Creative SB X-FI Audio Card
    Dell XPS   Windows XP

i was hopeful, but it didn't work. well teh one thing that i had to do diff was the dx updating, WGA doesn't like to work on my system for some unkown reason (yes it was bought at a store) so i found a way around their WGA check for it (i think) the one i got was labeled as dxwebupdate for august 2006. it updated just fine and it looks like it should be the same one as the newest update release microsoft sent out
my system is a home built one and haven't had probs with itunes with any other version, until this one. i'm tempted to just go back to the newest version 6 i have, cause this is rediculous. i can't do anything without it sputtering away at me. i tryed uninstalling it and removing every trace of its exsistance off of the system (including registry) and that didn't work i made sure all numbers were set to the correct values for my sound blaster audigy gamer, i was using some non oem drivers, but switched over just to make sure witht eh newest ones creative had, and it made zero diff.
i'm wondering if it is an issue it is having with sound blaster cards...
well anyways if anyone else has any ideas i would like to hear them
