Flags DB_CREATE | DB_RECOVER | DB_REGISTER generate a PANIC on a replica
Hi,
I have a configuration with one master and one replica (coded in C++ and using an XML Container). If I use a PHP script to read the xml data on the replica, I notice that when the replica stops it prints with the following errors if I use flags DB_CREATE | DB_RECOVER | DB_REGISTER | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_LOG |DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_INIT_TXN | DB_INIT_REP | DB_THREAD :

I don't get these errors if I remove flags DB_CREATE and DB_RECOVER.
Any explication for this behaviour ?
What version of BDB are you using for this configuration?dbxml 2.5.16, db 4.8.26
When you say "when the replica stops", do you mean that it gets the panic on its own or that you were trying to stop it (e.g. close the environment) when you got the panic?the process gets the panic when it tries to delete the XMLManager object which has adopted the dbenv object.
Did you specify a DB_REGISTER flag when opening the environment in your PHP script? I am not sure that DB_REGISTER is supported with PHP. I am checking on this internally. The reason this might be a problem is that one of the rules when using DB_REGISTER is that all applications using the environment must specify DB_REGISTER when opening the environment. I will let you know when I have an answer on PHP support for DB_REGISTER.with DB_REGISTER there is no issue. the panic is raised only when I use DB_CREATE | DB_RECOVER | DB_REGISTER | ... flags
>
If it is not too much trouble, can you try your configuration with DB_CREATE but without DB_REGISTER? We don't think DB_CREATE is likely to be causing a problem and this would help us confirm that it is a DB_REGISTER issue.I tried every combinations of DB_CREATE, DB_RECOVER and DB_REGISTER, and the issue is raised by DB_RECOVER. It seems that DB_REGISTER is ignored and that recovery has been started by the PHP script. I get the same behaviour if I launch db_recover on the environnement of the replica when replication is running.

IMac Retina has started shutting down several times a day, generating a "Panic Report".
Although I have had a new iMac Retina since October, it is only within the past few weeks that I have started trying to use it for most purposes. Initially, it seemed to be working OK. But during the past week, it has started to do peculiar things, such as:
1. Now, several times a day, it shuts down unexpectedly. When I boot it back up, it displays a message saying that it was shut down because of a problem. Then, when I click on the window for a report of the problem, it generates a long “Panic Report”.
2. When it boots back up, it automatically opens several windows that I did not have open when it shut down — Safari, Firefox, Excel, Word, etc.
3. I have 2 external 1gb drives connected for data, and 2 external 4gb drives connected for Time Machine backups. All of the drives have been formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). However, although Finder originally showed all 4 of those drives, Finder now always omits a particular one of the 1gb drives. Yet, iDrive and Time Machine continue to recognize all 4 drives.
4. Several times over the past week, it suddenly popped up a “Jabber" window containing a long transcript of a series of iPhone texts that I exchanged in January. However, I never installed Jabber (to my knowledge), and it doesn’t show as currently installed on any of my devices.
I just ran EtreCheck, and this is the report:

File dp.dbxml has LSN 17/1055014, past end of log at 17/678058
There are many many posts in forum with similar questions on why this happens. I know how to recover from the condition but looking for potential reasons why this happens.
We open env using following flags:
DB_CREATE | DB_RECOVER | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_LOG |
DB_INIT_TXN | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_THREAD | DB_REGISTER;
we run checkpoint every 5 mins in a separate thread:
txn_checkpoint(p_env, 0, 0, 0);
and remove log files:
log_archive(env, &List, DB_ARCH_REMOVE);
When some update happens we also checkpoint if data written is more than X MB (x=2).
txn_checkpoint(p_env, 2048, 0, 0);
log_archive(env, &List, DB_ARCH_REMOVE);
During shutdown we wait for all operations to finish, close the env and exit(). It runs on controlled env and 100% sure that log files do not get removed.
Please let me know if there are potential reasons why we should see it.
It also causes SIGSEGV :

Edited by: 871139 on Jul 7, 2011 10:05 PMHi,
As you mentioned, these errors have been discussed heavily on the Berkeley DB XML. Do a search there on "Database handles still open at environment close".
Actually, I suggest you post the issue on the Berkeley DB XML, as the solution is more related to closing/deleting specific handles (e.g. XmlDocument, XmlResults, XmlContainer, XmlManager etc). It would also be useful if you could provide a simple stand-alone test case program that reproduces the issue.

Replication, Sequences, and DB_NOTFOUND
Hello!
I am using db_cxx-4.7 on Linux, and am having an issue with replication and sequences. I should probably indicate (although I'm sure
it will quickly be obvious! ;>) that I'm new to the replication API.
I have two servers, Alice and Bob. I can start A first without issue, but when I start B, I see:
DbSequence::open: Permission denied
Environment flags:
DB_CREATE | DB_RECOVER | DB_THREAD | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_INIT_TXN | DB_INIT_LOG | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_REP
Sequence creation:
session_id_sequencep->open(0, &session_id_sequence_dbt, DB_CREATE | DB_THREAD);
...is DB_CREATE causing a problem when the node being started is not a master node?
I also am seeing this on this first server sometimes when the second server joins:
DB_ENV->rep_process_message: DB_NOTFOUND: No matching key/data pair found
message thread failed: DB_NOTFOUND: No matching key/data pair found
PANIC: DB_NOTFOUND: No matching key/data pair found
Maybe there's something wrong with the way I am setting up replication?
Help appreciated,
_Jesse Williamson ;-};
Edited by: user6703536 on Feb 4, 2009 1:09 PMThere's a bug in DB that prevents a replication client from opening a sequence. The bug number is #16406.
There is a published patch to correct the problem. Please see patch #1 from the following URL:

Does dbxml support online indexing?
HI,
I have a master/slave dbxml environment. I expect master can serve update request while at the same time adding index.
Is this possible?
In my test, it seems that it doesn't work. I wrote a c++ prograon to add index, which use flags (my maser application use the same flags):
DB_CREATE | DB_RECOVER | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_LOG | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_INIT_TXN | DB_INIT_REP | DB_THREAD
The program return the error message below:
PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery
PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery
PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'DbXml::XmlException'
what(): Error: DbTxn::abort: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
Aborted
But if I stop master/slave, the program works fine and index can be added successfully.
Thanks.
-YuanYuan,
Adding an index to an existing container will result in walking the entire container looking for candidate index entries. That, along with the index updates themselves is probably enough to lock a page that will hold off updates. So while there is no explicit locking going on because of the widespread effect of addIndex you will likely see update operations held off.
Generally speaking we recommend that you add indexes before populating a container. That is much more efficient.

Using Berkeley DB version 4.5.
DB environment is opened with following flags:
DB_CREATE, DB_RECOVER, DB_INIT_LOCK, DB_INIT_LOG, DB_INIT_TXN, DB_INIT_MPOOL, DB_PRIVATE and DB_THREAD.
My requirement: I need to use the cursor to iterate over all objects in a database which is only for ready only operation. However, it should allow other threads to update the same database in a transaction (w/ less wait time due to lock held by the read cursor) .
From the API referennce, Cursor isolation level can be controlled by setting the flag in DB->cursor() .
I can't use DB_READ_UNCOMMITTED as it returns dirty data. It looks like DB_TXN_SNAPSHOT is the perfect for cursor read as it doesn't take the read lock so other threads can continue with the write operation but then according to the manual this will affect peformance of write operation (as it has to update multiple version of the object in cache).
So, it looks like my next option is to use DB_READ_COMMITTED flag but I am not sure it affect with or without transactionId passed to DB->cursor().
Can you please suggest the appropriate flag to set in DB->cursor() for read-cursor (which satisfies my requirement) and what is the affect of passing txnId (and if txnId is not passed) ?
when Cursor is iterated at what point read lock is acquired and released?
Thanks in advance for your help,
RajHi Raj,

when Cursor is iterated at what point read lock is acquired and released?Degree 2 isolation, committed reads, means that the cursor will only read data that is committed (never dirty data, non-committed data); data will never change so long as it is addressed by the cursor, but the data may change before the reading cursor is closed. The read lock on a page is acquired when the cursor needs to move onto that page to read from it a record; the read lock is released as soon as the cursor moves away from that page.
The cursor has the same behavior whether a transaction id (txnId) is specified or not.
Please review the following documentation sections for more information:
- Isolation and Committed Reads in Getting Started with Berkeley DB Transaction Processing

Improving Replicated BDB Performance
Hi all,
I am performing some stress testing on an application which uses Replicated Berkeley DB as an underlying storage system. When running the test I noticed that all the DB servers were mostly idle and waiting and using less than 20% of the CPU. Not surprisingly the bottleneck was the disk which is being heavily written to throughout the test. To improve performance I tried a few of the common Berkely DB settings which are supposed to greatly improve IO performance like DB_TXN_NOSYNC and DB_TXN_WRITE_NOSYNC. Unfortunately adding either of these to the flags had no impact on performance and resulted in the same IO workload. I even tried setting the DB_LOG_IN_MEMORY since that seemed like it would significantly reduce the IO workload, yet still the same result. I find this really odd since these settings seem like they should improve performance and reduce IO, yet they are not. It seems like I may be doing something wrong or have misunderstood the implications of these settings. Also, I made sure to clear out the data directory in-between trials with different settings so make sure nothing weird was happening there.
I am running a replicated Berkeley DB instance (c++) on three separate machines with the following environment flags:
DB_CREATE, DB_RECOVER, DB_INIT_LOCK, DB_INIT_MPOOL, DB_INIT_TXN, DB_INIT_REP, DB_THREAD, and added DB_LOG_IN_MEMORY or DB_TXN_NOSYNC. The only DB flag used is DB_AUTO_COMMIT on a B-Tree database. I am using a 1G cache size which seems to be sufficient because db_stat reports 95%+ hit rates. I am using a 4096 page size since it is the same as that of the file system, along with a 5-50MB log buffer size. I am using the quorum as the ack policy for replicas. In general I have tried to follow as many of the recommendations as possible from the transaction tuning guide.
I am looking to sacrifice some degree of durability for performance, particularly because the machines are running on a local network where an ACK from a replica is likely going to be faster then syncing to disk. Any help in determining how to achieve this would be appreciated.
Edited by: user11122743 on May 29, 2009 11:28 AMIt does seem as if you're on the right track. How much real memory
does your system have, compared to the 1G cache you've configured?
Perhaps your cache is getting swapped out. Have you looked at the
system paging activity statistics?

Implementing Dirty Flag for a generated Model (Flex 4)
Hi there,
I try to implement a dirty flag for a model generated by a Data Binding Wizard. I tried several ways but always failed to get it work properly bounded to the 'enabled' property of a button. Is there a "best approach" to implement this in a by Flex 4 generated model?
I have all the Form elements bound to the model's properties and defined fx:Bindings on the model's property as well to get the changes back to the model as well.
-> I tried to listen to the properyChange event on the Super model but I always returned true for the Dirty flag and couldn't set it to false when I loaded the model into a Form.
-> I tried to implement a similar approach like below, instead of doing a normal 'getter' function on the isDirty flag I bounded it to the propertyChange event, it failed exactly the same way as above
I did used my own solution earlier like this:
[RemoteClass(alias="VODictionaryEntry")]
[Bindable]
public class VODictionaryEntry
private var _id:Number = 0;
private var _terminology:String;
private var _description:String;
private var _notes:String;
private var _insert_date:String;
private var _update_date:String;
private var _vendor_related:Boolean;
public var isDirty:Boolean = false;
public function get vendor_related():Boolean
return _vendor_related;
public function set vendor_related(value:Boolean):void
_vendor_related = value;
isDirty = true;
public function get update_date():String
return _update_date;
public function set update_date(value:String):void
_update_date = value;
isDirty = true;
public function get insert_date():String
return _insert_date;
public function set insert_date(value:String):void
_insert_date = value;
isDirty = true;
public function get notes():String
return _notes;
public function set notes(value:String):void
_notes = value;
isDirty = true;
public function get description():String
return _description;
public function set description(value:String):void
_description = value;
isDirty = true;
public function get terminology():String
return _terminology;
public function set terminology(value:String):void
_terminology = value;
isDirty = true;
public function get id():Number
return _id;
public function set id(value:Number):void
_id = value;
isDirty = true;
this is a very simple solution but it worked like a charm. Can somebody suggest me something else, a better solution?
thank you
r. Sandor
P.S.: I didn't include the validators to simplify the example.hi,
meanwhile I come a little bit further if you implement the isDirty flag into your remote model and let generate ( to be included in the flex model as well) a model with Flex you can listen to the propertyChange event and do implement a correctly functioning bindable property.
public function VOMessageEntry():void
addEventListener( PropertyChangeEvent.PROPERTY_CHANGE, handlePropertyChange );
private function handlePropertyChange( event:PropertyChangeEvent ):void
if ( event.property != "isDirty" )
isDirty = true;
this code must be inserted into the generated Object itself not in the _Super_objectname source code.
I hope I could helped somebody with this solution.

Using DB_REGISTER under cygwin returns "Permission Denied"
I'm trying to use the DB_REGISTER flag when opening an environment but under cygwin I get a "Permission denied" error when I run two process. I run the attached test case in a cygwin shell and let it wait. When I run it the second time in a different console, I get:

The issue here is Windows file locking, which works differently
from POSIX flock semantics. On Unix/POSIX systems, file locking
only interacts with other attempts to lock the same region of the
file. The assumption is that all processes will follow some
locking protocol before attempting to read/write that region
of the file. On Windows, locking a region of a file prevents
reads or writes (depending on the lock mode). This is already
addressed for native Windows and needed to be addressed on
Cygwin as well. This fix will be rolled forward into the
Berkeley DB mainline.
Thanks for reporting this and for providing a simple test case
that illustrated the problem,

If I don't supply the DB_REGISTER flag, it works but DB_RECOVER forces a recovery which I want to prevent by the DB_REGISTER flag.
I'm using db-4.6.21 and dbxml-2.3.10
Thanks in advance.
Regards JanJan,
You are not accidentally turning on DB_AUTO_COMMIT. DB has a lot of flags and some of them happen to have the same value as others. In 4.6.21 DB_AUTO_COMMIT and DB_REGISTER have the same value. The bug is in how BDB XML examines the flags on the DbEnv. It is looking at the wrong set of flags.
FYI, if you create/open a transactional container in BDB XML and do not explicitly use transactions, updating operations such as putDocument() will implicit create/commit a transaction for you. It is best to use explicit transactions for both read and write operations when you access transactional data.

Here is the short version. I bought an older orignial Macbook Air Model A1237. The hinges had been damaged, and the screen would not display correctly - it had lines all across it and you could not see what you were doing. Anyway - I replaced the screen, hard drive, logic board, upper case, pretty much everything in sucession in an effort to get the MBA up and running again and get rid of the kernel panic I keep getting, all Apple replacement OEM parts. I bought a replacement screen - making sure I checked compatibility etc.. but when it started up I felt great perfect view - all was good - then it kernel paniced. I finally figured out that if I turned up the backlight manually all the way to max or if the ambient sensor made the backlight go to max - these were the only time I get a panic. Otherwise it runs perfeclty. The odd thing is I bought the original MBA disc that would have came with the MBA brand new - and if I wipe the hard drive and install leopard 10.5.2 from the dics and do not update anything - it works 100% perfectly no kernel panic at all. If I updgrade beyond the 10.5.2 I get the panic back. So that tells me its not the hardware, and I have confirmed the hardware and firmware are all up to date, as I was hoping it would be that easy a fix of updating the firmware. I have tried everything - googled everything - I am at the end of my rope on this one - please help.
In addition to all the repair work - i have tried test user, upgrading to snow leopard and lion, taking to the apple store, everything I can do , with no solid answer - the apple store told me it was hardware. But if it was then 10.5.2 should generate the panic as well. There are lots of articles and posts on other forums on this very issue - usually surrounding having the MBA display repaired and then they started getting the panics thereafter - but no one has ever recieved an answer either at all, or that works.
Here is the KP log below - please let me know your thoughts - id like to upgrade to lion to get the most out of the MBA - any help is appreciated - - - - - heres the log - - - - ( the reason the BSD states at loginwindow is the ambient sensor at that time kicks in and creates the panic ):

Background: I had a cracked LCD screen on a A1237, and I replaced a new screen and a battery. I started getting kernel panics when the brightness went to the highest level. Anyways, what you do is you need to get this file from a apple os x 10.5:
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
then:
Install the .kext file you just grabbed by dragging it into Kext Utility (which can be downloaded here: http://cvad-mac.narod.ru/index/0-4)
then:
Shut down the machine. Reset SMC and PRAM (SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964, PRAM:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
and the problem is fixed. If you google a bit, you can find an os x 10.5.2 AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext file at to use.
The original fix I found was posted here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=880800
Edit:
Just to clarify, my mac book air is running snow leopard 10.6.8, and I inserted the file from a 10.5.2. The fix completely eliminated the problem, now I can turn the brightness to max without the kernel panic. -
Problems keeping generated java files
hi!
I have a war containing a lot of jsp files.
I want those files to be precompiled when I start my server, only if the war file has changed.
I also want to keep the generated files,
So that the next time I start the server
It won't need to precomile them (unless changed, ofcourse).
I set the "keepgenerated" flag and "precompile" flag to true, in the weblogic.xml file.
i also added:
<context-param>
<param-name>weblogic.jsp.keepgenerated</param-name>
<param-value>true</param-value>
</context-param>
in the web.xml
but everytime I start up the server, it deletes all
the old generated files, and precompiles my jsp all over again.
I also tried not using the pre-compilation option at all,
just to see the effect that "keepgenerated" flag had,
but the generated files were still removed each time i restarted the server.
Is it at all possible to keep those files?
If so, how?
thanx,
Einav
I tried using jspc to precompile the jsp files and deploy the resulting class files
(and the jsp files). This way the server never regenerates the files or compiles
the servlets.

Random kernel panics on iPhone 4 GSM: what would you do?
Hello all,
I'm posting here in hopes that someone could help shed some light on the matter before I give up and send my phone in for repair, provided it will be repaired/replaced given how random this issue is.
I've had an iPhone 4 since November 2010, a GSM unit as I'm in Europe. Jailbroke it on a dull day just to see if I'd have any use for that, restored it to stock firmware (using the backup I had created before applying the jb) about 24 hours later. No trace of jb on it at all nowadays, basically. The phone and the system are as vanilla as they can be. The only customization, so to speak, is the provisioning profiles in my name as I'm an iOS developer.
Ever since March, the phone will sometimes randomly reboot. There is no pattern whatsoever: I may be fiddling with it, I may be keeping it in my pocket, it may be charging, it may be placidly sitting on a table undisturbed. Out of the blue, the Apple logo will show up and the thing will reboot, and won't ask for the PIN either. I hadn't thought much of it as it was very rare, but lately it's become more apparent and I decided to look for some logs.
To my horror, I found that ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/Jolliphone/Panics on my Mac was way overpopulated. The weirdest thing is that all the logs look virtually the same, although they all end abruptly in different points (which suggests that they were so brutal that there was no "time" to write the whole thing down.)
Here is an example:

They are all like that. The only thing that's different is the OS system, which ranges from 4.3 to 4.3.3, and the location that generated the panic:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x8007f3e5): "buf_brelse: bad buffer = 0xd0704640\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1735.46/bsd/vfs/vfs_bio.c:2348

panic(cpu 0 caller 0x8007f3e5): "buf_brelse: bad buffer = 0xd06fdf88\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1735.46/bsd/vfs/vfs_bio.c:2348
…and so on. The caller is always 0x8007f3e5, and the buffer location is always in 0x0d6…–0x0d7… range. This is what leads me to think that it may be some memory problem.
As I said there is absolutely no pattern in this. Sometimes it will stay a month without panicking – after a few panics on April 1st, it happened again on May 2nd – yet in other occasions it will panic 4 times within 8 minutes as it happened yesterday morning.
Lately it's been happening more often when I charge it using the wall adapter, but then again it's fairly inconsistent: I have kept it connected since last evening on purpose, and it hasn't panicked once.
I have tried restoring it as a new phone, just to make sure that it wasn't a software problem, and the very same thing happened as soon as I connected to my father's iPad 2 adapter.
If you have read so far, I want to thank you very much for your patience. I'll get to the point: what should I do?
I spent 35 minutes on the phone with AppleCare this morning and was about to give the green light to have it picked up, but the woman told me that I couldn't provide the logs to tech support, and that they'd run some tests on their own and, if they could reproduce the problem, I would get a refurbished phone in place of this one, otherwise they'd send the same unit back. Considering that it's impossible to reproduce it on purpose, I'm afraid that I will just end up being phoneless for two weeks (with the added issue of finding a way to stick this micro-sim into a phone that takes regular-sized sims), and ultimately be sent back the faulty phone.
I told the woman I'd consider going to the Apple Store in Rome, so I could at least speak with a human person and expose the problem in more detail. I do have a repair ID and apparently I can just book a slot at the genius bar and have them access the repair ID data.
The problem is that I live 200 km from Rome, and it would take the better part of a day and it would be more money spent on this issue to get there and back. And I wouldn't even be certain that they'd replace it: even if they agree to replace it, what if they're out of stock on 32 GB units, for instance?
So here is the dilemma: I have a phone that feels very unstable given the 18 (eighteen) panics I've had in the last three days, and I'm facing either wasting time and money to go to an Apple Store, or being without the phone for the better part of two weeks, again without any certainty.
Going to my carrier (Vodafone) is pointless: they referred me to Apple; at most they will ship it for me, but at that point I'd rather do it myself.
As for the local Apple Premium Reseller, they are an authorized support center for Macs, but they don't offer any support for iPhones at all.
What would you do?
Thanks.DaVBMan wrote:
Not saying you are complaining, I know it isn't what one likes, but just the way it is and quite normal.
You can buy a used one from somewhere and just continue on your same contract (if same type of phone, eg: You didn't have original one before and go buy a used 3G now..then you need to change plans). But if you had 3G before and buy a used 3G now, you can activate it and your contract shouldn't restart.
A used one you buy shouldn't have a SIM card in it but even if it does, you don't want to use it. You need to go to AT&T store and request a new SIM. They will give you one set for your account and you just go home and activate using same account (thus no contract changing). If you try to use another SIM without getting one from AT&T it could mess with your contract so best to deal with them first to get one coded for you. There is nothing wrong with buying a used iPhone and saying you want to put it on your existing account. You can do that with any phone. You already have the data plan etc required so they don't care.
That was useful info, and I'm not complaining (well, I am, but it does no good, so it's a rhetorical complaint)...
What I'm really looking for is opinions about what would be the most sensible/cost effective way to go right now, given the available options.
Thanks,

Current version not generated!
Hello Colleagues,
I have a role in one system where I transported into another system.
I selected the flag of "Also Transport Generated Profiles for Single Roles" when I transported the role.
And when the import is done in the target system, I see that the Authortisation tab in PFCG for this
role is Yellow and the status is 'Current version not generated'. So I'm forced to generate profile manuallt for this role.
Can anyone tell what is the reason for the profiles not getting generated while importing?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Thanks and Regards, PradeepHello Pradeep,
