Flashback the truncate table is possible in 11g?

Is it possible, to recover the truncate table data using flashback? with out any db downtime. if yes, steps please.

Phil Florent wrote:
Flashback is a great thing but the olds methods are still there. You can do a restoration/recover of a part of your database (the minimum required + the datafile(s) with the segment(s) you need) and then open this small database, export the table and import it in your original database. No downtime. For sure, that's good to point out.
The OP was asking specifically about FlashBack so i assumed (perhaps incorrectly) those methods were ruled out already for whatever reasons. Never hurts to have too much information though, unless your brain happens to explode i suppose :)

  • Flashback and truncate table in 11gR2

    Hi,
From what I can gather, flashback database is the only flashback operation that can undo a table truncate. A truncate table operation cannot be rolled back, because it does not produce the undo data necessary for undo based flashback operations like Flashback query, version, transaction/backup and table.
    Is this assessment correct?
    Thanks.

ORA-01466: unable to read data - table definition has changedYes, that's correct Pal. The reason is that with any DDL , the structure/definition of the table would be changed and Flashback Query won't be allowed on such table.
I cannot use Flashback Query, however, just reading http://ocpdba.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/reversing-the-effect-of-a-truncate-table-in-oracle-11gr2 which demonstrates how to use Flashback Data Archive and Flashback Query to reverse a table truncate operation.
Why does Flashback Data Archive allow me to use Flashback Query past DDL operations? Please see,
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e17125/adfns_flashback.htm#BJFJHDAG
Actually, even with the Flasback data archive too, you can't do anything if the table structure is modified by a command whose effect it can't tolerate. In 11.2, what is given is that you can dissociate your table from the Flashback DAta archive using the package DBMS_FLASHBACK_ARCHIVE.DISASSOCIATE_FBA , do the changes on both target and archive table and then reassociate . Oracle does makes a note in this operation that assume no aboslute guarantee in the data's accuracy if you would do this procedure.
If I do not have Flashback Data Archive enabled on a table, how can I determine the SCN to undo a truncate table using Flashback database or TSPITR?You would need to mine the logfile using the logminer .

  • Truncate table loses privs on table...

    Oracle11g/RHEL5
    Hi,
We have a table that is inserted into a then deleted every so often. The current method that was being used to remove the rows was the TRUNCATE TABLE ption. However, we found out that when that statement is issued, that any user that had privs on that table, no longer work even after it is re-created. So it looks like the next option is to used the DELETE * from table_name. However, that is not good for performance and undo. This table is about 300,000 rows and will grow in the future. How could we get around this issue?
    Thanks.

TRUNCATE TABLE does change privileges.
What do you mean by "after it is re-created"? You don't have to issue another CREATE statement after TRUNCATE TABLE.
Do you mean after re-populating the table? Do you mean that other users, who did have privileges, can still DESCRIBE the table right after it is TRUNCATEd, but they can't do anything with it after an INSERTs have been done?
I suspect you DROPped the table at some point.
Double-check that the problem exists when all you do is TRUNCATE TABLE.
Post a script that re-creates the problem. There's no need to include lots of data: one column and one row will show the problem just fine.

  • Truncate table related questions

    Hi Folks,
    Environment: 10g Rel 2
I am trying to prove the following two points by way of experimentation
a, The truncate table operation will reset the high water mark (HWM) to the first usable data block in the table segment
    # Take a HWM snap shot before the truncate operation
    select a.BLOCKS - b.EMPTY_BLOCKS -1 HWM
    from
      (SELECT BLOCKS
       FROM   DBA_SEGMENTS
       WHERE  OWNER=UPPER('JIM') AND SEGMENT_NAME = UPPER('EMPLOYEES')) a,
       (SELECT EMPTY_BLOCKS
        FROM   DBA_TABLES
        WHERE  OWNER=UPPER('JIM') AND TABLE_NAME = UPPER('EMPLOYEES')) b;Output: 7
    truncate table JIM.EMPLOYEES;
Re ran the above code and got the same result (i.e. 7 blocks). I was expecting to see 0 blocks instead? Is the above query the right method of
    finding the HWM?
b, The truncate operation will also truncate the corresponding indexes for the table
Q, Is there a view that will show all the index values of the table? These values will probably be meaningless, but I would like to see them before
    and after the truncate operation.
    Thanks

    a) If you would have read on the empty_blocks column in dba_tables, you would have known it is populated by dbms_stats.
    Did you run dbms_stats.analyze_table?
    b)
    There is no such view.
All dictionary views are documented in the view DICT and the online documentation.

  • TRUNCATE TABLE NOT WORKING AFTER DROPPING CONSTRAINTS

    Hi,
I have a table with a foreign key constraint. I know you can't truncate tables when there are foreign key constraints. So I drop the constraints before running the TRUNCATE TABLE command. But SQL Server is still stating there are foreign key constraints
even after they have just been dropped.
When I use SQL Server Management Studio to generate a drop & create script on this table or any other table with an FK consttaint, the generated script fails stating that there are still foreign key constraints??
I have the same problem for every table that has FK constraints, for those without FK, TRUNCATE table works without issues.
The end goal is to reset the identity value of the primary key. Since DBCC does not work on Azure, TRUNCATE TABLE is the only way left, especially if you can't even drop and recreate tables with FK constraints.
    What am I missing here?
    Peter

    Hi,
    Thanks for posting here.
TRUNCATE TABLE is similar to the DELETE statement with no WHERE clause; however, TRUNCATE TABLE is faster and uses fewer system and transaction log resources.
TRUNCATE TABLE removes all rows from a table, but the table structure and its columns, constraints, indexes, and so on remain. To remove the table definition in addition to its data, use the DROP TABLE statement.
If the table contains an identity column, the counter for that column is reset to the seed value defined for the column. If no seed was defined, the default value 1 is used. To retain the identity counter, use DELETE instead.
    Restrictions
You cannot use TRUNCATE TABLE on tables that:
•Are referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint. (You can truncate a table that has a foreign key that references itself.)
    •Participate in an indexed view.
•Are published by using transactional replication or merge replication.
For tables with one or more of these characteristics, use the DELETE statement instead.
TRUNCATE TABLE cannot activate a trigger because the operation does not log individual row deletions. For more information, see CREATE TRIGGER (Transact-SQL).
    Truncating Large Tables
Microsoft SQL Server has the ability to drop or truncate tables that have more than 128 extents without holding simultaneous locks on all the extents required for the drop.
    Permissions--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The minimum permission required is ALTER on table_name. TRUNCATE TABLE permissions default to the table owner, members of the sysadmin fixed server role, and the db_owner and db_ddladmin fixed database roles, and are not transferable. However, you
can incorporate the TRUNCATE TABLE statement within a module, such as a stored procedure, and grant appropriate permissions to the module using the EXECUTE AS clause.
You cannot truncate a table which has an FK constraint on it.
Typically my process for this is:
    Drop the constraints
    Trunc the table
    Recreate the constraints.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Interrupted TRUNCATE TABLE command

    Hello,
I've made very dangerous mistake today: TRUNCATE TABLE on production database. :-(
But in several seconds (2 or 3), I managed to break the operation (Before the execution ended).
It was quite a big table, now (after the accident) there are more then 32 million records.
We need to know, are there any records deleted?
We have no proper backup, to compare the records with it.
And I could not find any in-depth description of how TRUNCATE works.
    Please can you:
    1. Tell, about any method to check if there are deleted records?
    2. Link, to any resource, where I can read in details, about how TRUNCATE TABLE works.
    Thanks, in advance, for help

My understanding is that the TRUNCATE TABLE table statement is atomic. It either fails or succeeds. Truncates all rows or no rows at all. Therefore if you interrupt a TRUNCATE TABLE statement your table should remain in its original state.
    This can be shown below:
    SQL > CREATE TABLE TEST AS SELECT * FROM ALL_OBJECTS;
    Table created.
    SQL > INSERT INTO TEST SELECT * FROM TEST;

  • Truncating table having partitions

    Hi,
I have a table haing 10 partitions and 5 subpartitions in each partition. Now i have to truncate that table. please let me know..
    1) Can i truncate the table directly?
    2) If no then how to truncate the table having partition->sub-partitions....
    With Regards,

    Hello,
To count your rows on the Truncated Table, you may also execute the following query:
select count(*) from <Table_name>;You should be carefull if you ANALYZE or use DBMS_STATS on your Table just after you
    Truncate it.
Because, as the Table is empty, the statistics of the optimizer may be wrong and, it could
affect the performance of your queries on this Table later (when it will be full).
So, you may have to refresh you statistics (with DBMS_STATS) after loading again this Table.
    Hope this help.

Since TRUNCATE is not DML but DDL, you'll need some dynamic SQL here:
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE TransferData IS
    BEGIN
--clear current tables to allow for clean data
       execute immediate 'truncate table BASELINE';
       execute immediate 'truncate table TREATMENT';

  • What is the recommended way to truncate tables in ODI?

I want to create a separate step to truncate the result tables, before the start of the actual job. What is the recommended way of doing this?
I am currently putting the truncate statements in the ODI procedure, but that has a lot of typing. Is there a odi command in the toolbox that I can use?
    Thanks.

    Ok,
If the table will be loaded by interfaces, you have the "Truncate" option at the IKM's, just change it to "Yes".
If you need to Truncate but they won't be loaded by Interfaces a possible way is:
    - requirements: it will be necessary to have some common "string" at tables names.
    1) create a procedure
    2) create an step
    3) at source tab put:
    Select table_name from user_tables where table_name in '%THE_STRING%'
    4) at target tab put:
    Truncate table #table_name
If you don't have a common "string" you, instead, can create a table with all table names that you need to truncate and change the select command at 3).
    Does it help you?

  • How to capture Field validation errors in the Error table in ODI 11g

    Hello,
We are using ODI 11g (11.1.1.5) and the scenario is to read the data from a flat file (.txt) and do a bulk insert into MS SQL Server database table.
We need to capture the error records (if the source field size is greater than the target column size) into the error table. However the interface errors out at step "Loading - SrcSet0 - Load data (BULK INSERT)" with error message "SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Bulk load data conversion error (truncation) for row 33, column 6" but these errors are not being inserted into the error table.
Is there a way to capture these errors in the error table? Below is the KM details.
LKM: LKM File to MSSQL (BULK)
    CKM: CKM SQL
    IKM: IKM MSSQL Incremental Update
FLOW_CONTROL is set to true for the IKM.

    Hello,
I had the same problem with ODI when I was trying BULK INSERT of the txt file into MS SQL. Check the cell(s) in your source file (txt) - it looks like the value in hte cell has hiding symbols: when pressing F2 tryng edit the value in the cell the coursor appared far to the right from the right end of the value. So, try to use backspace to delete the hiding symbols and verify the above. If avasrything is OK, then modify your txt file. Let me know if it works.
BTW , I've created procedure inside the MS SQL 2008R2, which BULK INSERTed records into temporary (#...) table and immediatelly, without any verification all the records were inserted into the final table in the DWH here is the statement:
if object_id('TEMPDB..#<table>','U') is not null drop table #<table>
    CREATE TABLE [dbo].[#<table>]
    [1] [varchar] (50) NULL,

  • Is it possible to get the updated table records based on date & time.

Is it possible to get the updated table records based on date & time in oracle.
    Thanks in advance.

no, actually i am asking update records using 'UPDATE
or DELETE' statement, but not insert statement.
    Is it possible?
I think we can do using trigger on table, but problem
is if i am having 20 tables means i have to write 20
trigger. i don't want like this.Of course it's still possible, typically you'll find applications with a column LAST_UPDATE, probably a LAST_UPDATED_BY and so on column. You don't say what your business need is, if you just want a one of query of updates to particular records and have a recent version of Oracle, then flashback query may well help, if you want to record update timestamps you either have to modify the table, or write some code to store your updates in an audit table somewhere.

What do you mean by "like to see" ? You can WRITE the fields in any order you want. If you want to display the internal table in an ALV you can manipulate the fieldcatalog.
If you want something else other than display the field, you have to explain your req. in detail.

  • Is it possible to name the results table.

Hi, I'm new to java and have hit a brick wall devloping a GUI which access a SAPDB database.
They layout of the GUI is:
have a awt lists in card layout, which is populated with the results of a SQL query to table REGION.
However the number of results returned can be greater then 1Mill. To minimise the mem useage, i'm using the ResultSet absolute(), first() etc methods to collect and display small chunks of the data, for the different card in the gui. This works fine :)
However, the user is able to select an item from the list to perform a new query, which the results a presented in a dialog box, not dependent on the parent frame. Works :)
But, when the user (I) try to move anothe card in the parent frame I get this error:

After some reading I have come up with this hypothesis:
In the parent frame there is the object (class) RegionTable, which contains the ResultSet (rsR) of the sql query generated by it.
In the dialog box there is the object (class) ProteinTable which also contains the ResultsSet (rsP) of the sql query generated by it.
So when RegionTable querys the database the rsR points to the results table in the SAPDB. All good.
However when ProteinTable querys the database, rsR closes and rsP is valid ie. points to the results table in the SAPDB.
Thus after the second query RegionTable.rsR is unable to collect the results of its query. BAD :(
From what i have read, if the results table is named for the first query, the second call which results table is named something diff then rsR will not close, as the results table is not destroyed, thus rsR can read it's results after the second qury.
This problems occours when the objects share the same connection or diff connections.
As far as I'm aware i'm using JDBC 1.2 drivers and SAPDB latest build.
I know i could hold the results in a view, but that requies more coding, being able to name the results table in the SAPDB make it alot easier.
    So my question is:
    1. Are my assumptions correct??
    2. is there a SQL statement to name the results table for a given query?
    From SAPDB:
A result table name identifies a result table (see table).
    Syntax
    <result_table_name> ::= <identifier>
And I've got no idea what is beging impiled beyond that it is possible to name a results table. Obtained from :
    http://www.sapdb.org/htmhelp/da/ed9036dfe4b903e10000009b38f889/frameset.htm
If anyone can help, that would be fantastic!!!

  • Is it possible to reference the name of the current table in a formula?

    Hi,
I am wanting to be able to reference the name of the same table that I am entering a formula into, i.e.:
    =SUMIFS(Net,Event,"CURRENT TABLE NAME HERE",Category,"Publicity")
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Nick

AppleScript can access the current table name, so it if you are doing a lot of formula entry in different tables you could click once in a table and have a short script insert the formula for you.  Here's a simple example:
Say you have a data table like this:
    Event
    Category
    Net
    Event 1
    Publicity
    10
    Event 2
    Celebration
    20
    Event 1
    Supplies
    5
    Event 1
    Salaries
    20
    Event 3
    Celebration
    25
    Event 1
    Publicity
    20
    Event 2
    Publicity
    11
    Event 1
    Accounting
    20
And (important) you have 'Use Header Names as Labels' turned on in Numbers > Preferences.
    You caninsert this formula:
    =SUMIFS(Net,Event,"Event 1",Category,"Publicity")
... into a table named Event 1 that looks like this:
    Cat
    Amount
    Publicity
    30
    ...with a script like this:
-- NB:  the \ "escape" the quotation marks so AppleScript takes them literally
    tell application "Numbers"
set t to document 1's active sheet's first table whose selection range's class is range
set c to t's selection range's first cell
      set c's value to "=SUMIFS(Net,Event," & "\"" & t's name & "\"" & ",Category,\"Publicity\")"
    end tell
The script automatically inserts the name of the table you have clicked in.
(To use the script just copy and paste into Script Editor, click once in the cell where you want the formula (B2 in the example) and click the 'Run' triangle button in Script Editor.)
