FlashIsland UI element missing to embed Flex application

Hi,
I am trying to add flex application into my webdynpro java . But FlashIsland UI element is not displaying in my NWDS.
I am using NWDS Version: 7.0.09
EP Version: 7.0      SP: 16
Is there any way to get the FlashIsland UI element in my view?
Regards
Vineela

Hi Vineela,
To implement Flash Island for Web Dynpro Java applications integrating Flash Islands, you require the following:
Adobe Flex Builder 2 or 3
Adobe Flash Player 9 Update 3
Flash Island Flex library WDIslandLibrary.swc. To enable the use of a Flash/Flex component in Web Dynpro, the component must exist in the form of a FlashIsland. This wrapping enables the communication between the Flex component and the Web Dynpro Framework.
Are you sure, you are having the required installations available with you. Please check the links below for more information on the same, in case you have missed:

• Best practice to embed flex application in html

Hello guys
I am not sure what's the best practice to embed the flex application. We couldn't use html code in flex builder. Would you guys edit the html files via other tools to embed the swf file after the application is completed or there are other ways to do it. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Jerry,
Why you couldn't use the html code generated in flex builder. In the html wrapper file generated in FlexBuilder you have SWF embed code directly along with the Flash Player detection javascript code...If your users don't have the FlashPlayer installed or if they don't have the latest Flash Player version installed then the application will prompt the users to install the latest Flash player plugin..
What's the problem that you have got by using the html wrapper file generated in FlexBuilder..
Thanks,

• Embed a Flash Application into a Flex Application

Hello everybody,
I'd like to know if there is a way to embed a Flash
Application into a Flex Application. My goal is to wrap Flash apps
in Flex Modules, and I don't know how to do it.
I know it is possible to embed swf by using @Embed and an
mx:Image tag, or to use flash content by creating a flash swc
component. However these two solutions don't allow to call the
methods of the Flash app.
On the other hand, it is possible to load a swf file via the
Loader Class, and then call the methods via loader.content. But
with this solution I can't embed the swf in my flex application and
I have to load it at runtime.
Any ideas ?

Look into SWFLoader.
Be aware though, you can not directly access AS2/FP8/Flash8
swf's from within an AS2/FP9 app. Local connection is used in this
case.
There are dataType and timing issues with SWFLoader. Here is
a complete example:

• Can I embed the Flash Document preview on my Flex Application

Hi I am creating a Flex application utilizing acrobat document sharing, and I was wondering if I could have it display a preview of my documents very similar to http://share.acrobat.com/adc/.
I notice that you can embed flash on webpage by the use of this viewer https://share.acrobat.com/adc/flex/mpt.swf, and I tried loading it and appending necessary variables to it, it works but I cannot resize the viewer. I'm not sure if Im doing it wrong or its just the viewer not compatible at all.
Thanks, I really appreciate if anyone could point me on the right direction.

I'm sorry, but at present this isn't something that we support. We didn't build the viewer with the intent of allowing others to use it in flex.

• Error in compiling Flex application: 64K byte limit

Hi experts ,
While deploying the VC model , i m getting this error :
Error in compiling Flex application: Error: A function in the code exceeds the 64K byte limit (actual size = '65557'). Since the problem occurs in the compiler-generated deferred instantiation code, please refactor/componentize portions of this document.

Could any one help me out in solving this issue ..its urgent ...
Your suggestions will be rewarded.
Thanks,
Pratima

You have to remove few components from your model to decrease the compiler generated LOC.
Check the following link for detailed solution:
https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=936390
Taken from SAP Notes:
Solution
Doing the following may help:
1.Divide problematic iViews into a number of nested iViews.
2.Optimize each model to reduce the number of elements that it
contains:
a.Reduce the number of signals by merging signals of the same name.
b.When your application updates forms with read-only fields, use
expression boxes and a data store instead of signals.
c.Minimize the use of animations in your models, including form
sliding and chart animation effects
d.Use a data store to store variables, instead of invisible forms.
To display messages, use a simple text rather than a static dynamic
expression.
3.For on-the-spot, temporary workarounds, you can try dragging an empty
layer onto the Design board. This sometimes solves the problem ad
hoc, but is not recommended as a best practice.

• Passing correct image-file path in flashVar from jsp into embedded Flex application

I have an application that embeds an image viewer, written in
Adobe Flex within a jsp page running in a J2EE application on
Tomcat 5.5. The Flex code is a one-line modification of the
application displayed at (
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/samples/fig_panzoom/).
The image viewer is founded and loaded in the output to the
screen, but I cannot get the Image Viewer to display the image
correctly, even though I succeed when either I run the .swf from
the command-line or from an HTML page.
My webapp is called FRSApp. The directory structure is, under
FRSApp:
myTest.html
jsp/catalog.jsp
pan_zoom_files/images/map.jpg
The JSP code is thus,
code:
<%@ taglib prefix="mm" uri="FlexTagLib" %>
<mm:mxml
source="../pan_zoom_files/FIG_PanZoom_for_jsp.mxml" >
<mm:flashvar name="myVar"
value="/FRSApp/pan_zoom_files/images/map.jpg"/>
</mm:mxml>
the code within PanZoom.mxml is,
private var _imageURL:String =
Application.application.parameters.myVar;
<ns1:ImageViewer
id="imageViewer"
imageURL="{ _imageURL }"
bitmapScaleFactorMax="5"
bitmapScaleFactorMin=".05"
width="100%" height="100%"
x="0" y="0"/>
I have tried other paths to the image file, including
images/map.jpg [required by command-line execution of .swf]
pan_zoom_files/images/map.jpg [required by HTML page
(myTest.html) that embeds the .swf file]
I have succeeded in loading image viewer embedded in the jsp
page when the image path is hard-coded in the mxml file, by means
of the following code:

The error is either a "failed to load image" generated by the
Image Viewer code, or a Flex system error message, resembling a
null-pointer exception:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of
a null object reference.

at mx.managers::SystemManager/docFrameHandler()
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!

Solved the problem. I had made several mistakes. One of them
was to pass in the J2EE context path when what was needed was the
fully qualified image url:
http://localhost/FRSApp/pan_zoom_files/images/earth-map_small.jpg.
The second mistake was to assume the flashvar variable could be
picked up by initializing Action Script in the the mxml file,
designated by <mx:script> tags. No, the flash variable will
only be visible within the <mx:Application>
</mx:Application> tags.

• Embedding Fonts in a Flex application -- Legal issues?

I am currently building a Flex application for a Client. The Style guide they have provided shows Univers 55, Univers 65, and Univers 45 as the main fonts for the site and the app.
Page 1567 of Using Flex 4.5 states
Note:
Check your font licenses before embedding any font files in your applications. Fonts might have licensing restrictions that preclude them from being stored as vector information.
The fonts they are using in the AI file for the design document appear to be older version Adobe 1.0 TrueType fonts dated 30th June 1997.
I can not find the original license for these fonts, but such licenses may pre-date embedding technology, so are we allowed to embed them?
As an alternative could we safely use the OTF Univers LT Std family and are there any differences?

As far as i see it, it's mainly just for convenience.
Embedding an image into application removes the need for you to store it elsewhere on the server, as it becomes part of the .swf file.
From personal experience it's very handy with small images, as it doesn't increase the size of the .swf file too much, and it means you don't have to keep track of them when distributing your release build.
you don't have to embed anything, you can simply reference it by location instead, but you'll experience a slight delay as it's loaded into the application on request.
The need for using this feature depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish.
If you're making something like a large image gallery, it'll completely remove the need for wait for pictures to load when you're scrolling through them. However i wouldn't recommend it as you'll send your application size will go through the roof, and the waiting time for the whole application to load would be fairly extensive.
If you have an application with like 40 small ~3kb images using for navigation icons or something, you might as well, it's just convenient and won't impact the loading time by too much.

• Adobe Air+ Flex applications to build from database

Hi,
I know how to create a Flex application from database.But
when we are developing a flex application from database using Adobe
AIR,i'm not able to run the application.It is throwing an error
saying .xml file is missing.Can anyone help me out with
this?

In Flex, an application can be created from database by
following the steps as follows:
STEP 1. Create a new Flex Project and name it as for example,
“FLEXDB”. Select the
application type as “Web Application (runs in Flash
Player)” and Application server type as
“ASP.Net”.
STEP 2. Go to Data->Create application from database.
Select the project as
FLEXDB”.Create a new Connection to SqlServer 2005 and
specify the database and name that connection
as”TestConn”. Then select any table (for example
DashboardRegion) from the list of tables and click
“Next” button.
STEP 3. Select the Server language as “C# with Web
Services”. Click “Finish”.
STEP 4. Then the following files and folders will be created
under the project “FLEXDB”
automatically.
• DashboardRegion.mxml -- is a design page.
• DashboardRegionScript.as -- defines web service
object and capture the results and assigns the results to the
corresponding UI Component.
• DashboardRegionConfig.as -- calls the Web Service
file.
• DashboardRegion.asmx -- calls the Class Files
(DashboardRegion.cs file).
• Web.config – defines the Connection string
• App_Code is a folder which contains the following
files
o DashboardRegion.cs that interacts with SQL Server 2005 and
return the results.
o TestConn.cs that defines connection to SQL Server 2005.
STEP 5. Run the application “DashboardRegion.mxml
”.We can see the Database results
Fetched and displayed in the corresponding UI Component in
the output.
Now we are trying to create a Similar Flex Application using
Adobe AIR.
For this, we have to follow similar steps mentioned as above
with a slight modification in STEP 1. It will be as follows:
STEP 1. Create a new Flex Project and name it as for
example, “FLEXDB”. Select the
application type as”Desktop Application (runs in Adobe
AIR)” and Application server type as “ASP.Net”.
The remaining steps are same as above.
When we try to run the application
“DashboardRegion.mxml”, it is throwing an error saying
“DashboardRegion-app.xml” file is missing. To solve
this issue we tried creating “DashboardRegion-app.xml”
file manually, the application is running but, again throwing an
error saying “Unable to load WSDL. If currently online,
please verify the URI and/or format of the WSDL
(../DashBoardRegion.asmx?wsdl)”.
Can any one please suggest a solution for this?
Or Help me how to connect sql server 2005 in the Adobe AIR
application that are buid using Flex builder.

• Embedding Flex applications inside a portlet question

I'm trying to embed a Flex application within a Java portlet on my WLP 10.3.2 portal. I'm able to display the Flex app in the portlet but now I'm trying to access data. Does anyone know of any documents that cover how to access Flex data from a portlet and how to access portlet data from the embedded Flex application?
thanks

When you mentioned you integrated Flex App inside a Portlet, are you using like iFrame tag or Browser Portlet where in iFrame tag you specify the Flex app url like that. If so, then you will not be able to share any data/information between this iFrame portlet and the actual other real portlets.
If these Flex app has something like JSR based Flex portlets, then you can integrate them in WLP more easily. Another option is to consume these Flex Portlets as remote portlets using WSRP on WLP Side and the producer will be Flex Portal App (with flex portlets).

• Refresh Flex application only once.

Hi All ,
In my Flex Application i am calling a function like :
applicationComplete = "addPanel(999999);" , which will add a panel. 999999 is nothing but flag.
But i should refresh application Only Once .... how to do that..
Thanks in Advance...

The SWC files are within the resource directory of LCDS.
For example:
C:\lcds31\resources\lcds_swcs\FlexSDK4\frameworks\locale\en_US
fiber_rb.swc
C:\lcds31\resources\lcds_swcs\FlexSDK4\frameworks\libs
fiber.swc and fds.swc
You can use the following within ANT.

<load-config filename="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks/flex-config.xml"/>

<source-path path-element="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks"/>

<compiler.library-path dir="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks" append="true">
<include name="libs" />
<include name="../bundles/{locale}" />
</compiler.library-path>

• Installed CF8 and now Flex application throwing error

HI,
I've just installed CF8 developer edition, and now I've tried
creating a new Flex application, which has nothing in it, just an
empty Main.mxml file, I did set ColdFusion Remoting as the way the
application will access data, through the project setup wizard.
Now when I run the application I get this error message:
VerifyError: Error #1053: Illegal override of subtopic in
mx.messaging.Consumer.
at frame2
at [abc-decode]
at flash.display::MovieClip/nextFrame()

at mx.preloaders::Preloader/private::timerHandler()
at flash.utils::Timer/flash.utils:Timer::_timerDispatch()
at flash.utils::Timer/flash.utils:Timer::tick()
Then if I click continue I get this error message:
ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable
_CursorManagerStyle__embed_css_Assets_swf_mx_skins_cursor_BusyCursor_1386701310
is not defined.

at flash.utils::Timer/flash.utils:Timer::tick()
And then if I click continue once more I get the Initializing
load screen start but never finish running so my application never
loads.
The other odd thing is I have some Flex apps which I built on
CF7, which I then imported to CF8 and they work fine running on
CF8, its only new projects which fail.
If I create a new project which doesn't use ColdFusion
remoting, the Flex application works fine. So something is a miss
with the remoting connection I think.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Stephen

For me exactly the same problem. I need it to connect to my school's intranet.
I think it means either waiting for an update, or somehow find a way to use the build in VPN functionality of Leopard instead.
Good luck for us all!

• Error # 1014 verifyError - flex application in Livcycle Workspace

Hi All
I have created a flex application using Flex SDK 3.4.1 to be incorporated in Adobe LiveCycle ES 2. My flex application is working fine, but when I lunch the flex application inside the Adobe LiveCycle Workspace, I got Error # 1014 VerifyError and the cause of this error is the use of flashx.textLayout.elements.TextFlow libaray.
Any help is really appriciated.
Best regards
Khaled

That explains it then. This example requires the ContentElement, which is only present in FlashPlayer 10 and later. The example should require that -- when the project is set up, it can specify the minimum Player version it requires. Then if you try to run it on an earlier Player you get a warning that the SWF can't load on this Player, and it tells the user what version number is required. Try installing FP10, and it should work.
