Flex Builder Next

I'm new to the Adobe world as a developer and have been using
Flex Builder 2. Having just seen the CS3 launch I notice no mention
of Flex Builder CS3.
What is the road map for Flex Builder? Is there a replacement
within the CS3 family of products or is Flex Builder going to be
around for a while?
I'm looking at building RIAs from the perspective of a Web
Developer and find Flash provides the wrong metaphor.

Gaurav is correct - Flex is not part of CS3 because Flex is
part of Adobe's Enterprise offering which includes LiveCycle. We
are highly commited to Flex. Flex has its own timetable and you
will see new versions with improvements and features that our
customers want (because we ask you what you want).
Flex was designed to address the needs of the Web Developer
in that it uses an HTML-like syntax (MXML) and a JavaScript-like
language (ActionScript). In fact, JavaScript and ActionScript share
the same base: ECMAScript.
Apollo addresses the need to have a secure, multi-platform,
desktop runtime environment that incorporates Flash, PDF, and HTML.
Apollo apps use the same UI classes asFlex and you can use Flex
Builder to make Apollo applications.
Flash is part of CS3 because Flash has traditionally been
used by Web Developers along with Dreamweaver, Photoshop, etc. to
build HTML-based web sites where Flash was part of the page; Flex
apps generally ARE the page. Flash CS3 will help bridge the
workflow gap between Flex and Flash because Flash CS3 also uses
ActionScript 3.

I think although the change is confusing, in the long run it adds clarity ... here's why ...
1. Flash Builder (formerly Flex Builder) is an IDE to write .SWF (Flash Player) files .... no matter what application framework you use, it could be pure AS3 code (i.e your own framework) , Flex framework or anything else .. there are many other framework options (although Flex is the most mature) ... Flash Builder can be used to build in any of those frameworks.

Flex is a framework of classes that solve several everyday application development problems when building apps that can run in the Flash Player ... you can use any tool to write your own classes that use flex framework classes (a flex application) ... Consuming toPDFA and isPDFA methods in DOCConverterService in Flex Builder 3.0 AIR Application

Hi All,
Does anyone have sample code how to consume and use the Docconverter service from Adobe Livecycle 8.2 ES in Flex Builder 3.0 AIR Application. I want to consume both the methods 1) toPDFA and 2) isPDFA methods to convert a PDF to PDFA and to check the compliance after conversion. If any one could help me in this, would be very grateful.

I think the problem you are experiencing is this one:

You probably have Subclipse 1.2.4 installed, which is the
latest official release. But the new release based on Subversion
1.5 has been in development for over a year. It will be version
1.4.0 and probably released next week when Subversion 1.5 is
released.

Flex Builder 4.5 Premium license not working for automation - anything else to try?

So I'm getting the message when I try to record/run a test that the "License not present. With the trial verison only limited replays are allowed." I have a valid license key for Flash Builder 4.5 premium edition. I have read many forums on this subject but none of them help me. I compile my project either using Flash Builder 4.5 or an ant script invoking mxmlc. I have modified my flex-config.xml to include "flashbuilder45", and my given serial number with and without dashes (and other combinations). I do not have a license.properties file. I'm not sure what else I can do. I have already reinstalled Flash Builder 4.5. I am now trying Flash Builder 4.6 with the same results. This serial number is a group one good for 5 boxes. My next step is to request a replacement serial number from Adobe, since I can't think of anything else that could be wrong with my setup.

1. It is a premium which I can see when I view "My Products" on this adobe site. I can enable Network monitor and when I do my application hangs (I've read a bit on how to get this working properly, but I don't need it)
2. It is an FB serial number. Here is what it is under My Products:

Under product I have tried "flashbuilder45", "flashbuilder4", "flashbuilder46", and even "flexbuilderXX" a few times. Under my serial number I have entered the serial number as shown in My Products - I have tried tried it with dashes, and without.

which says "the serial-number element is NOT the license number that we got from Adobe (and that we use when installing the Flash Builder tooling) but it is a derived form of that license number that can be found for example in the license.properties file of a developer that has Flash Builder installed". However I have read conflicting reports about this. At any rate I do not have a license.properties file, which I assume was discounted after flex builder 3.x.
4. Yes, using FlashBuilder and my ant script. I have also cleaned my browser's cache. The problem persists.

Flex builder 3 don't show new components

Hi,
I've installed flex builder 3 beta 3. The new components such
as the advanced datagrid don't show in the components window.
Actually they were showing but for some reasons they are gone now.
I also have flex builder 2 installed on the same pc, but it
shouldn't be an issue.
I've made sure in the preferences that flex builder 3 uses
the right sdk (3.0 beta 3)

Yes I was definitely running 3.0. I've solved the problem by
reinstalling flex 3.
However sometimes I get a nasty crash when I open a component
in Design mode and when the Properties window of this component is
opened. Then Flex closes and I get a popup with error log. Will
post it next time I see it.
Overall it seems ok though, I'm already enjoying the advanced
datagrid :)

Tutorial for creating a J2EE project with "Flex Builder 3 Beta 3 " ?

I'm trying to set up a Flex environment with:
Flex Builder 3 Beta 3 stand alone
WTP (from eclipse update manager)
LCDS 2.5 (with JRun)
JBoss 4.2.2GA
At this moment I successful installed everything (but not set up). I added WTP at Flex Builder3 (with the eclipse update manager). I copied the two flex-tomcat files in jboss.
Then in Flex Builder 3 I created a new Flex Project. In the wizard first window, I selected J2EE, Livecycle and WTP. Then in the next window I need to configurate the J2EE server.
I couldn't find any information/tutorial for this window? Is there a tutorial for this?
This window ask me:
Target Runtime: I created a new one for JBoss 4.2.2 (during this process flex builder asked me to add a project but actually I'm creating this project so I hadn't any project to add (??)).
ContextRoot: name of the project I'm creating (default). Is it good?
Content Folder: the default is "WebContent". Is it good?
Flex War File: What is that? Where do I find it?

The settings you mention all sound fine, but the I believe the Flex War file may be what you referred to as the flex-tomcat files (specifically the one should be called flex.war from the install folder).
You don't need to deploy the flex.war file to JBoss manually, when you create a project, you just select the file in the wizard and it is extracted and used as a template for the new project. In fact, it may cause a port conflict with your project if you do deploy manually it (unless you tweak some of the config files), so it's probably worth removing it from the deploy folder if you did put it there. The other file, flex-admin.war, can stay without causing issue.
The closest to a tutorial that I am aware of is if you search "New Flex Project" in the help system, it talks about what each of the options should be when creating LCDS projects.

Flex builder 3 - cannot configure coldfusion8

I am using the trial version of Flex Builder 3 to create a
new project (File/New/Project/FlexBuilder/Flex Project).
In the New Flex Project window, I enter the project name,
select "web application" as the application type, and select
"ColdFusion" as the server technology. The "Use remote object
access service" is checked, and "LiveCycle Data Services" is
selected.
In the next screen - in the server location, I enter
"Standalone" as the installation type, the webroot is
"c:\inetpub\wwwroot," and the root url is "
http://127.0.0.1" (I'm using IIS, so
I'm not using port 8500). This is the screen where I see error at
the top - "LiveCycle Data Services is not installed at the
specified location." But I made sure LiveCycle Data Services was
installed when I installed ColdFusion8, and "Enable Remote Adobe
LiveCycle Data Management access" is checked in the ColdFusion
Administator panel.
What is missing? Any help would be appreciated.

I figured out the RDS issue - check the web.xml file in the
WEB-INF folder of cfroot and webroot. I uncommented the
<servlet-name> and the <servlet-mapping> tags which
referenced RDS Servlet, restarted the server, and that took care of
the RDS issue.

Flex Builder Projects

Flex Builder does not have an "Open Project" choice on the
menu. We'd like to check the flex project into our source code
control and share the environment, however we cannot find a way to
"open" the project on a machine other than the one it was created
on. If the project is deleted from the workspace, how can it be
added back, and how can I add a project to my workspace or open a
project from another source?

I just had the same problem. Here is the solution:
File>Import>click general>Existing Projects into
Workspace> click next> click browse on select root
directory>this will add your project to the projects list.>
click finish and your done. One thing I did noticed is that when I
tried to open other projects, they would not open. I got the
message "Invalid project description.
/Users/work/Sites/flex2/eventTest overlaps the location of
another project: eventTest". Go figure.

Flex Builder choked - need help please

I had to go out of town for a few days so I installed Flex Builder 3 on my MacBook, downloaded and installed Flex SDK 3.3 (Since that is what I have been building on, on my office Mac), created an exported .zip of my major project files on my office Mac, copied it to the MacBook and set off on my trip.
When I set up the MacBook to start work, things looked OK at first, until I tried to switch to design mode. It popped up an error that "This component is based on ______, which is not a visual component. Switch to source mode to edit it" It did this for components based on Grid, Canvas, HBox and more.
I was stumped, and miles from an Internet connection to be able to do research. FInally I decided maybe my install of SDK 3.3 was corrupt. I reset in the project prefs to use SDK 3.0 and ... everything worked perfectly! I did what I needed to do for the rest of the weekend and returned home.
Now, I just tried to export my project as a Flex Project Archive on my MacBook. It resulted in a 24K .zip file - basically empty - that can't be used. So, I just renamed my primary project folder on the office Mac to hide it from Flex Builder, then copied all the files, including the hidden .flexproperties, .project and .actionscriptproperties, from the MacBook onto my office Mac in a new project folder named the same and in the same location as previously. The transfer appeared to be successful.
Now, on my office Mac, I am getting the message "An unknown item is declared as the root of your MXML document.Switch to source mode to correct it." This happens every time I try to switch to Design view, regardless of what component is used in the MXML doc.
After many attempts at figuring out and fixing the problem I tried setting the project properties to utilize SDK 3.1. Once that process was complete, then I went into properties again and set it to 3.3. It appears that I may have succeeded in restoring it to usability, but I'm not confident in that yet.
Can anyone give me some insight into the cause and fix of this problem? Especially the failure of Flex Builder to create a viable .zip archive file? I will be needing to move the project back and forth between my computers quite a bit for travel in the next few months.

I am not being facetious with my answer but have you considered simply using XCode and Apache Ant and creating your own build script? This is the approach that I've had the fewest of problems with. The reason being is that Ant is Ant no matter where it is. It also cuts out all the background noise (i.e. configuration files, scripts, etc).
I have had similar problems like what you've mentioned using Netbeans and Eclipse (e.g. a version change or an SDK change and suddenly my project is somehow foobar).
As for your error message:
"An unknown item is declared as the root of your MXML document.Switch to source mode to correct it."

Don't know if it's your solution. Sometimes these automated tools place little hidden scripts in their comments that are meant to mean something for the drag-and-drop GUI editor and deleting these comments confuses the IDE.

Calling WebServices using Flex Builder

Hello,
I want to use a WebService in the Flex Builder. I first defined the WebService:

FlexPMD 1.1 not working on Flex Builder 3, SDK 3.5 (Mac OS X)?

I have FlexPMD 1.1 installed at Applications/FlexPMD/ with the following preferences:
FlexPMD command line installations: /Applications/FlexPMD/flex-pmd-command-line-1.1.jar
FlexPMD custom ruleset:
Java command line: java -Xmx256m
FlexCPD command line installation: /Applications/FlexPMD/flex-pmd-cpd-command-line-1.1.jar
Minimum tokens: 25
If I right-click on my "src" folder and select "FlexPMD > Run FlexPMD" the progress indicator looks busy for 2 seconds then it stops, with nothing in the FlexPMD Outline or View. One the other hand, "Find suspect cut and paste" does work.
Any ideas?

How to get WTP on my Flex Builder 3 Standalone Version: 3.0.214193?

Hello All,
I have downloaded the Flex builder 3.0.2 from the adobe website, and am trying to install the WTP plugin for it.
When i use this link http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/updates/ for getting the plugin it throws the error as :
Java Persistence API Tools (2.1.1.v200902200210-7A79BjDZRDE7GUMQDJGD) requires feature "org.eclipse.platform (3.4.0)", or compatible.
Any many more like this. I know my eclipse plugin version is 3.3 version.
I am not sure how can i upgrade my eclipse which came with Flex builder standalone to the 3.4 version. And also is it possible to use standalone only as using the flex builder plugin in not an option for me right now.
Or any other way if i can use Tomcat from Flex builder without using WTP ??

I've installed and it works fine but I've many plugins installed.
Try to install WST (Web Standart Tools) throw FB and after that install WTP.
For intalling WST follow this.
In FB menu.

"Europa Discovery Site" Finish
Choose any nearest mirror for your location.
Find "Web and JEE Development" folder.
There are "Eclipce XML Editors and Tools" and
"Web Standard Tools (WST) Project" check them to install. This plugins requier some other plugins, so it's easer to click "Select required" button on left side to check them all automaticaly.
After that standart installing procedure: Licence agreement, downloading and so on.

How to edit xml files in flex builder 3

Hello Forum
I'm new to flex, trying to learn my way around it. I usually use Flash to write my actionscript, but the eclipse interface seems intruiging...
First question: I am setting up a config.xml file where the main variables are set for the application. For some reason Flex Builder 3 doesn't really let me edit or even create xml files? What is the reason for that? Do I need to install something additional? What am I missing?
This is a pure actionscript application by the way...
Any advice is much appreciated.

Flex builder 3 debug and autocomplete problems

I have been working with Adobe Flex Builder for building Flash applications over a year. Recently I tried a few beta SDKs - 3.4 and 4.0. After playing arround with these SDKs and returning to a stable one (3.2) - Flex builder started causing some problems with autocomplete and debugging:
Autocomplete - when selecting class members from autocomplete - it usually clears all standard library import statements from the class. I started copying and remarking these import statements for retrieving them back after they are deleted.
Debug - it won't stop on most breakpoints (it used to before changing SDKs). Mostly it ignores my breakpoints.
I would love to hear any ideas about the cause and possible solution to these problems.
