Flex, PHP, MySQL Best Practices?

When using the HTTPService to invoke PHP/ database
transactions what are some best practices to insure multiple
simultaneous users successfully complete the transaction?
So, in my Actionscript I build an object to pass to the PHP
script that uses the values of the object to build a SQL query and
executes the query, evaluating the result.
Right now, I'm returning a text string from the PHP script
(after error checking there) that simply says "ok" if the script
succeeded.. and using that string in the HTTPService.Result
(lastResult) listener.
Anyone have any experiences to comment on?
thanks,
Dan

Or use AMFPHP and pass typed objects back and forth. I find
this much easier than working with XML. Once you've used AMFPHP on
one project, you'll wonder why you bothered with XML. Or at least
that's how it was for me. AMFPHP 2.0 should be released very soon -
I believe they're just getting the docs ready.
Cheers,
Darren.

  • Best way to retrieve/store date Flex PHP MySQL?

    Hi All,
    I have a question about storing/retrieving a date-field from the MySQL database, using Flash Builder 2 & Zend AMF.
    This is as much as I know:
    MySQL Database stores date in this format: yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss
    And Flex will not recognise that as a "date", instead it will suggest this value is an "object".
    With "Configure return type", I can manually set this field to "date", but it will not work retrieving of updating the date as MySQL will not understand the standard date-format it'll receive,
    I guess, the best solution would be if I could tell the MySQL Server how the standard date-format should be, but I have not found this option. Can anyone confirm this?
    The remaining options are:
    Format the date in the SQL-query
    Format the date in the PHP-function sending/retrieving
    Format the date in Flex, befor assigning it to a date-field...
    Can someone tell me the BEST practice to handle date-objects? I guess it's the date_format function in MySQL....
    I'm trying to build an app with over 3200 fields, shared over 60 tables, of which many are date-fields.
    Would be awesome if I could just use SELECT * FROM myTable, and all would be fine with date-fields and all...
    Any tips?

    I'm confused. This is what I have:
    On my MySQL database, I've created a VIEW with the query that I need. I thought it'd generally be efficient to create views for every 'Form' that I need.
    This is my VIEW v_person
    SELECT p.`person_id`, p.`name`, p.`lastname`, DATE_FORMAT(p.`birthdate`,'%d/%m/%Y %r') as birthdate
    FROM person p
    Now I have a simple table v_person returning
    person_id
    name
    lastname
    birthdate
    0
    John
    Doe
    null
    1
    Jane
    Did
    23/08/1976 12:00:00 AM
    2
    Juno
    Doh
    01/04/2001 12:00:00 AM
    "Great! Now I can set up my query once, returning the date in whatever format Flex likes."
    Not.
    This is the standard generated PHP function to get information by ID. This works fine.
         public function getV_personByID($itemID) {
              $stmt = mysqli_prepare($this->connection, "SELECT * FROM $this->tablename where person_id=?");
              $this->throwExceptionOnError();
              mysqli_bind_param($stmt, 'i', $itemID);
              $this->throwExceptionOnError();
              mysqli_stmt_execute($stmt);
              $this->throwExceptionOnError();
              mysqli_stmt_bind_result($stmt, $row->person_id, $row->name, $row->lastname, $row->birthdate);
              if(mysqli_stmt_fetch($stmt)) {
                   return $row;
              } else {
                   return null;
    This is the standard generated Form in Flex:
    One note to make when using RETURN TYPE,
    is that in when I use person_id=0 , I can change "birthdate type" from OBJECT to DATE, because date is null.
    When I use person_id=1 , I CAN'T change "birthdate type" as it defaults to "STRING".
    Since I want to use a dateField in my Form, I changed birthdate type to "DATE". (Even though I now understand that return type IS in fact a string)

    Somehow SOMETHING wants to convert "10/21/1984 12:00:00 AM" to Date.
    Where does it fail? I feel like I'm SO close, but making a faceplant right before the finish.
    ok.
    I'm by no means an expert, so let me know if I'm doing something wrong, but this is how I'd expect it to work.
    Can someone tell me how I should use a dateField instead? Where should I make the stringToDate and dateToString conversion?

  • [php+mysql] best way to integrate a tree category menu base on db?

    Hi all,
    I have a products catalog where all products are organized in
    categories.
    The category structure is something similar to this:
    category 1
    subcategory 1.1
    sub-subcategory 1.1.1
    sub-subcategory 1.1.2
    sub-subcategory 1.1.3
    sub-subcategory 1.1.4
    sub-subcategory 1.1.5
    subcategory 1.2
    subcategory 1.3
    category 2
    subcategory 2.1
    subcategory 2.2
    sub-subcategory 2.2.1
    sub-subcategory 2.2.2
    sub-subcategory 2.2.3
    sub-subcategory 2.2.4
    subcategory 2.3
    ...and so on...
    In general, I have 3 category levels.
    I manage these catagories with only one table using self
    foreign keys.
    Now I need to add a tree menu that will reflect the above
    category
    structure.
    I use php + mysql to store the tables (products and
    categories.
    I found several javascript samples that allow you to do
    something similar
    but with static data.
    I'm searching for a tree menu that is easily customizable and
    that can use
    dynamic data from mysql db.
    Is there a tutorial or smple that would do the trick?
    TIA very much!
    tony ;).

    The page I'm trying to create is here www.hollisterairshow.com/plan-results.php and the questionnaire is here www.hollisterairshow.com/helpusplan.php .
    I went ahead and created recordsets using advanced recordsets and these seem to be working, here's a sample SQL
    SELECT *
    FROM plan
    WHERE Saturday = 'Saturday' AND plan.howArriving = 'Auto'
    I created a recordset for each combination of day and transportation mode - six in all
    This selected the correct records.
    To display the count of how many records selected I then used in DW Insert/Data Objects/ Display Record Count/Total Records which generated the following code:
    <?php echo $totalRows_rsSatAuto ?>
    This worked OK - not elegant but OK and I repeated it for each combination of Day and Transportation mode!!
    So there are two problems I'm having:
    I know I can select the records I want but how do I display the sum of the column containing "How many in your party" - i.e. in the PHP code generated above what do I replace $totalRows_rsSatAuto with?
    There are two questions using radio buttons where I'd like to display the count and % for each option selected. I can select all records for these questions but what code do I put to sum the number of selections for each option and what code do I put to calculate the percentage
    I understand the arithmetic involved which is pretty simple but it's the mechanics of coding that has me stumped. It would really help if you could give me a sample for say the "Are you camping overnight" question which has a "Yes/No" option only. In my mundane way I would create two recordsets, one for "Yes" and one for "No", and use the same technique I describe above for counting Total Records in each recordset, but then I'm stuck with how do I calculate and display the percentages. I must be missing something very obvious as I'm sure there just has to be a more elegant solution.
    Thanks so much for your continued interest.

  • Help!How can Flex+PHP+MSSQL(Microsoft) work together?

    I have already learned how to make Flex + PHP + MySQL work together.Simply by Zend AMF.
    But my company wants to use MSSQL(Microsoft) as the database.
    I also use the Zend AMF.
    But it returns the Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Zend_Amf_Server_Exception' with message 'Handle error: Unable to writeObject output: Can not serialize resource type: mssql result 499' in C:\wamp\www\ZendFramework\library\Zend\Amf\Server.php:631Stack trace:#0 C:\wamp\www\BQSB-debug\gateway.php(69): Zend_Amf_Server->handle()#1 {main} thrown in C:\wamp\www\ZendFramework\library\Zend\Amf\Server.php on line 631
    How can I handle the error?
    Can Flex+PHP+MSSQL(Microsoft) work together by Zend AMF?
    Or there are other ways to make Flex+PHP+MSSQL(Microsoft) work together.
    Please help me, I am waiting online,thx.

    I am currently using Flex 4+Php+Zend with a MSSQL backend.
    I use the microsoft sql php driver to interface from PHP to MSSQL.  http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2005/en/us/php-driver.aspx

  • PHP/MySQL Test/Production Server best practices

    Hello,
         I am currently learning PHP/MySql and have setup a test server to develop on and a production server to go live with. I wanted to know what are the best practices for synchronizing the test server with the production. Should I export the database from the test server and import it to the production server each time I make a change or is there better way to incrementally sync the databases. I am using Dreamweaver to design the web site.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Thanks, but does this mean that after I go live I should make changes on the production database only and not use the development database, if say I need to add a new table or record(s)?
    Procedure
    1. Take production web site down
    2. Export/Save current database
    3. Make changes to production database
    4. Export/Save new database
    5. Bring production web site up
    Is this correct?

  • Best Practice: Storing an array in MySQL

    Hi,
    I'm working on an app that uses Flex 2, Coldfusion and MySQL.
    I'd like to store an array (or in this case an ArrayCollection)
    into my db. I'm not totally sure if I can do this. I read something
    about PHP having an implode command but I'm wondering what the best
    practice would be for trying to get an array into MySQL via
    ColdFusion.
    I'd be grateful for any advice.
    Novian

    Thanks, mike_the_maven.
    I'm not familiar with that tag but I'll definitely look into.
    I'm also wondering about potentially storing my ArrayCollection as
    a BLOB in MySQL. Any thoughts about this approach?
    Thanks.

  • Flex best practices

    Im new to Flex but I have plenty of experience using traditional webdev technologies (HTML, CSS, JS/AJAX, PHP).  I know that when you build a web app using these technologies, it's considered best practice to use event listeners rather than event handlers in JS, and to place all your JS in an external file and reference it in your HTML page. I've been watching several videos on Lynda.com on Flash Builder 4 and Flex, and in all the videos, the author places most of the Actionscript in the MXML file while referencing a few custom Actionscript classes. With that said, what do Flex developers typically do?

    In Flex 3, it is considered best practice to use the Presentation Model pattern (as advocated by Martin Fowler), where you extract the view states and view logic.
    A PM is a simple ActionScript class that extends EventDispatcher (for Data Binding purposes).
    [Bindable]
    public class SalesProjectionPM extends EventDispatcher {
         // Collection of QuarterlySales objects
         public class quarterlySales:ArrayCollection;
         // Event handler
         public function viewSwitchHandler(event:MouseEvent):void {}
    You can then inject this PM into an MXML view using an IoC container framework and bind your view to the corresponding PM for both your components dataProviders and events. If you have a central data model, you can inject it into your PM and bind to it.
    In Flex 4, you already have the separation of view and logic that comes with the new Spark Architecture. You have an ActionScript component that contains the view states and view logic (including event handlers) on the one side. And you have a MXML skin that materializes the UI on the other.
    You add/remove event handlers in the partAdded(), partRemoved() overriden methods. If you have a central data model, you can inject it into your ActionScript components.

  • Best practice for adding text to Flex container?

    Hi,
    I'm having some troubles to lay a TextFlow class out properly
    inside a Flex container. What's the best practice to achieving
    this, for example adding a lot of text to a small Panel?
    Is it possible to pass anything other than a static width and
    height to DisplayObjectContainerController constructor, or is this
    not the place to implement this? I guess what I am looking for is
    the layout logic I'd normally pack into a custom Flex component and
    implement inside measure() and so on.
    My use case: a chat application which adds multiple TextFlow
    elements to a Flex container such as Panel. Or use TextFlow as a
    substitute for UITextField.
    Some example code would help me greatly.
    I'm using Flex 3.2.
    Regards,
    Stefan

    Thanks Brian, the example helps. However problems quickly
    arise if I modify it slightly to this (please compile it to see):
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="
    http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
    layout="absolute" initialize="init()">
    <mx:Script>
    <![CDATA[
    import flashx.textLayout.compose.StandardFlowComposer;
    import
    flashx.textLayout.container.DisplayObjectContainerController;
    import flashx.textLayout.container.IContainerController;
    import flashx.textLayout.elements.TextFlow;
    import flashx.textLayout.conversion.TextFilter;
    private var _container:Sprite;
    private var _textFlow:TextFlow;
    private function init():void
    _container = new Sprite();
    textArea.rawChildren.addChild(_container);
    var markup:String = "<TextFlow xmlns='
    http://ns.adobe.com/textLayout/2008'><p><span>Hello
    World! Hello World! Hello World! Hello World! Hello World! Hello
    World! Hello World! Hello World! Hello World! Hello World! Hello
    World! Hello World! </span></p></TextFlow>";
    _textFlow = TextFilter.importToFlow(markup,
    TextFilter.TEXT_LAYOUT_FORMAT);
    _textFlow.flowComposer.addController(new
    DisplayObjectContainerController(_container, 200, 50));
    _textFlow.flowComposer.updateAllContainers();
    ]]>
    </mx:Script>
    <mx:Canvas width="100" height="100" id="textArea" x="44"
    y="46" backgroundColor="#F5EAEA"/>
    </mx:Application>
    What is the best way to make my textflow behave like a
    'normal' UIComponent in Flex? Should I use UIComponent instead of
    Sprite as a Container? Will that take care of resize behaviour?
    I have never before needed to use rawChildren.addChild for
    example, maybe you can explain why that's needed here?
    I realise that the new Textframework works on an AS basis and
    is not Flex or Flash specific, but this also poses some challenges
    for those of us using the Flex framework primarily.
    I think it would help to have some more basic examples such
    as using the new text features in a 'traditional' context. Say for
    example a TextArea that is just that, a TextArea but with the
    addition of inline images. I personally feel that the provided
    examples largely try to teach me to run before I can walk.
    Many thanks,
    Stefan

  • Best practice for auto update flex web applications

    Hi all
    is there a best practice for auto update flex web applications, much in the same way AIR applications have an auto update mechanism?
    can you please point me to the right direction?
    cheers
    Yariv

    Hey drkstr
    I'm talking about a more complex mechanism that can handle updates to modules being loaded into the application ect...
    I can always query the server for the verion and prevent loading from cach when a module needs to be updated
    but I was hoping for something easy like the AIR auto update feature

  • Best practices for "designer - developer" interaction in Flex Mobile

    Hi,
    I'm starting development of a mobile software application and Flex Mobile is the platform I've chosen for that.
    What is the best practice / recommended workflow for designer-developer interaction? For example in web application the designer provides HTML/CSS templates to the developer which integrates them in the Web Application. What is the analogue in Flex Mobile? What should I request as input from the designer?
    I'll appreciate any hints, links, advises or previous experience on the topic.
    Thanks!
    Best Regards,
    Dinko

    If you're using Adaptive Web Design (CSS3 media queries), you can maintain one site with CSS Layouts optimized for different device widths.

    jQuery Mobile

    If you're actually running separate web sites for mobile and non-mobile devices, have a look at this recent discussion:

    IMO, there is nothing wrong with providing links for mobile and non-mobile users to choose which site they would prefer to use -- especially for tablets who may have an interest in both.

  • Best practice to embed flex application in html

    Hello guys
       I am not sure what's the best practice to embed the flex application. We couldn't use html code in flex builder. Would you guys edit the html files via other tools to embed the swf file after the application is completed or there are other ways to do it. Thanks for the reply.

    Hi Jerry,
    Why you couldn't use the html code generated in flex builder. In the html wrapper file generated in FlexBuilder you have SWF embed code directly along with the Flash Player detection javascript code...If your users don't have the FlashPlayer installed or if they don't have the latest Flash Player version installed then the  application will prompt the users to install the latest Flash player plugin..
    What's the problem that you have got by using the html wrapper file generated in FlexBuilder..
    Thanks,

  • DateField from Flex 4 to PHP-mysql

    Problem :
    when inserting a record from flex to mysql the date is reduced by 1 day.
    changes the date to 1 days ahead..like flex"13/12/2009" to mysql"12/12/2009"
    in Flex m15.POSTON = pOSTONDateField2.selectedDate;
    PHP is genereated by Flash Builder ..no changes in that.
    $item->POSTON->toString('YYYY-MM-dd HH:mm:ss')
    mySQL works fine.
    Here is the interesting bit..when I change my computer location from UTC +10( Australia) to UTC + 0..it works fine.
    changed the PHP setting date.timezone ="Australia/Brisbane"
    date_default_timezone_set('Australia/Brisbane');
    stilll same result..
    Why dose this happen how do I fix it.
    Thanks

  • Best way to update images using PHP / MySQL?

    HI
    I want to update images using PHP/MySQL, so users can update their images and maybe some other files but mainly images.

    How messed up is this code?!

  • Best Practice for Servlets

    I guess I'm asking for most peoples' input on what I'm planning to do here ....
    Here's what I want to do, and know a bit about.
    o I want to make a servlet that serves only XML.
    o After that, I want to transform the XML into web pages, RSS feeds etc.. using XSLT.
    Here's what I'm not so sure about...
    o How should I implement the interface to the web-based aspects? Should the servlet be coded to display HTML pages on "GET" requests? Or should I use a pile of HTML files to make forms?
    o What do I use to perform the XSLT transformations? Where should the set of solutions be placed relative to my servlet? Would a user then access this solution rather than the servlet itself?
    o How do I code the servlet on one machine, and then test it on another without breaking the libraries? How do I set up any libraries I might have to use (like for XSLT transformations) on the server?
    Any other advice here? I'm sure this is done often, but I can't find a resource that explains the best practices for it all.
    I know this sounds like a lot of stupid questions. I've had lots of programs working with Java before, but I'm at a loss as to how I'm supposed to package libraries I use in my programs - moreso with a servlet. To make matters worse, I plan on using MySQL as the database.
    If there's some wizard on the forums here who's willing to say more than just "RTFM" (of which there is none to answer my questions together as one), I'd be very very happy ":^)

    Let me re-pose my question so as to be specific
    enough to not be picked apart in my answer.
    I want to FIRST AND FOREMOST, create a servlet that
    serves up XML based on parameters given to it (how?
    who cares.).What does "serves up XML" mean?
    Let's be precise. Do you intend the servlet to send the XML back to the client? Or is the XML an intermediate step in your processing? (Yes, it matters.)
    Then, I want to create interfaces (HTML, RSS,
    boogledeedoo) to this XML data by having either JSP,
    another servlet or insert something else here,
    transform the XML into whatever the desired format
    is."interface" is a loaded term in Java. What do you mean by it?
    >
    My assumption is that I'll make the servlet that is
    capable of outputting my desired XML data and then
    create another servlet that will poke it for data as
    needed to transform the XML into HTML. This servlet
    would also likely serve as the web site itself and
    would manage user logins etc...(persistance yaddy
    yadda)You're not thinking about this properly.
    "yadda yadda" == muddled thinking.
    My other assumption is that I'll make another servlet
    that will poke the XML servlet and transform that
    into RSS or anything else I can dream up.How does "poke the XML servlet" fit into the request/response protocol that is HTTP? Please explain.
    -=-!REASONING!-=-
    Previously, when I was working with PHP, I liked to
    make scripts that would display interfaces and post
    to themselves. OK, now I see. "interface" == GUI in a browser to you. Very good.
    You can create a JSP that is an interface. You can have that JSP submit the HTTP POST or GET request to itself. No problem there, as long as "itself" knows what to do with the request.
    It was a nice way of creating a
    complete little package. Everything for one function
    was encapsulated nicely under one roof. No excessive
    HTML files all over the place to nurture.A simple problem, a simple solution. You can do that with a JSP.
    Look. Part of my inability to describe this well is
    because I DO feel like I'm in a lot of directions at
    once. Or you don't understand the technology very well.
    But I have to be in order to pull together
    some sort of plan for myself. I understand many
    concepts and have just finished studying object
    oriented design etc..."Just finished"? How long did it take?
    I know things about how Tomcat does connection
    pooling for SQL connections.Great. Not much to understand there. It's harder to figure out how to do n-tier apps with more than one page well.
    I do know how to use Google, probably a lot better
    than most. But rest assured, I've yet to find a
    little guide as complete as any of the "LAMP" books
    there are out there. Which by the way, I have never
    purchased.That's because Java Enterprise Edition isn't intended for little problems. LAMP is. Maybe the limitation is that you are used to "little" problems and not bigger ones.
    If JEE seems scattered and complex, it's because it is. It encompasses more than LAMP.
    I'm confident in good guidance, and not a heartfelt
    smackdown. I'm still waiting for some clear suggestions.I gave you one, you just didn't know it: go read about Spring.
    http://www.springframework.org
    It'll help you structure complex apps from the user interface to the database in the back.
    You're welcome.

  • Best Practice with States and lots of code lines

    Hi.
    This is my first application in flex.
    I'm ok with as3.
    Now, in as3 we were 'forced' to work mostly with external classes so hardly we have a unique code page with lots of lines.
    In flex, using States leads to build codes with lots of line IF we think on states as web site pages.
    I'm not sure it I understand it right. You mean: if an user visits a website built with 10 pages, but the users access only 2 pages, all that 8 remaining pages would have to be download to the swf the user loads?  (this is, considering the usage os states as pages)
    I'm building a system where the user logs to use it.
    2 states at now:  login page and home page.
    I access the db, and get the user and password with this event dispatched from the db.result (this works, however i found it too-old-style looping. Is there a better way, of course, which?)
    protected function usersService_resultHandler(event:ResultEvent):void
                    allUsers = event.result as ArrayCollection;
                    for (var i:uint;i<allUsers.length;i++){
                        if(allUsers[i].user == tx_user.text && allUsers[i].password == tx_password.text)
                            currentState = "home";
                        else
                            Alert.show("Fault", "Login");
    While I have start to build the "home" page/state, I realized that my code would dramatcally increase. Is it the best practice? Do I have to call another url after login (to open a Session - please, some Session tutorials in flex)? Or I keep doing all in states? I'm afraid my swf would grow bigger.
    Thanks

    Ok.
    The problem is that I'm not used to PHP, and I have generated the code to deal with the server automatically via Flex.
    However I could add a new function, and I could guess how to catch values in the db to compare.
    its a frankenstein function, but i'm afraid it also works. By now, there is no way to know whether user mistyped password or username.
    public function getUserVerification($user, $pass) {
            $stmt = mysqli_prepare($this->connection, "SELECT user, password FROM $this->tablename where user=? AND password=?");
            $this->throwExceptionOnError();
            mysqli_stmt_bind_param($stmt, 'ss', $user, $pass);
            $this->throwExceptionOnError();
            mysqli_stmt_execute($stmt);
            $this->throwExceptionOnError();
            mysqli_stmt_bind_result($stmt, $row->user, $row->password);
            if(mysqli_stmt_fetch($stmt)) {
              return 1;
            } else {
              return 0;
    Also I had to update the _Super_UsersService.as  Class flex had generated before when I first created a php code to deal with db.
    Finaly, I had to assign return and input types for the new function I've created.
    Amazing... it works.
    Now, when pressing the submit button on the login, flex sends user and password so php compare them instead looping it in a Array.
    Also, I have made all this code inside a "loginView" component. So my main app is clean again.
    I guess I understand the idea of using components and reusing them as many as possible. I just have to get used to how to access a component value from outside and vice-versa.
    Now, the creationPolicy is something I would look for. This might be interesting.
    Thanks a lot.
    Btp~
