Fluxbox startup

hi guys!
Im having a little problem with flux.
there is a ~/.fluxbox/startup file that should be run by every startup of this desktop enviroment. But its not! ..I mean, I have that file in my filesystem but it's not prcessed during flux start...
I want it to do this >
setxkbmap us,sk -variant ,qwerty -option
grp:switch,grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll
..which is "script" for changing keyboard map, but it is not working. Even command eg. "pidgin" is not working.
can anybody tell me why?..or what should I check?
thanks (:

EDIT: Btw, why are you launching pidgin,nm-applet,etc from xinitrc? Launch them from your fluxbox startup file instead?
because my flux startup file does not work (:
I have tried to change flux startup command to ck-launch-session startfluxbox but response is the same..
even if I select fluxbox in slim...

  • ~/.fluxbox/startup not being executed by fluxbox (SOLVED)

It doesn't appear that my ~/.fluxbox/startup file is being executed when I run fluxbox.   No matter what I put in, nothing happens.
    Here's my ~/.fluxbox/startup file:
    #!/bin/sh
    fbsetbg -f /home/myuser/backgrounds/ArchBlue.png
    # garbage command for testing
    /usr/bin/asdfasdfadsfadfadsf
    exit 0
None of the commands I put in this file are executed when I start fluxbox.  Fluxbox starts with no problem, though when I type startx with "exec fluxbox" in my .xinitrc.
Any ideas why it isn't being executed?

Well, I got it to work the way it's apparently suppose to work (I think).
The startfluxbox manpage says that it will create the ~/.fluxbox/startup if one doesn't exist.  So, I deleted the original one (which was created when I first installed and ran fluxbox for the first time I think) and then ran exec startfluxbox from my .xinitrc again.
It re-created a new ~/.fluxbox/startup file that was completely different than the old one (namely, it had "exec fluxbox" at the end of it).  So, startfluxbox worked with the newly created startup file.  But, the fbsetbg command in the newly created ~/.fluxbox/startup file wasn't setting the background image (it would appear for a second and disappeared).  Following iphitus's advice, I addded '&' after.
And now, everything works.  The default startup file created by startfluxbox is kind of nice - lots of examples that are commented out by default.  However, their fbsetbg example wasn't working until I added the '&' as mentioned before.
Thanks iphitus and ScriptDevil for the suggestions and help.
    Cheers.

  • [Solved] Trouble running script at Fluxbox startup

I'm trying to execute a script which runs as ~/.left in the terminal.  it runs xrandr commands and works perfectly after fluxbox has started.  so i figure it needs to run after fluxbox in the startup script, so i looked at the wiki and found the format for starting an app after fluxbox:
    fluxbox &
    fbpid=$
    sleep 4
    # Applications you want to run after fluxbox has started
    # MAKE SURE THAT APPS THAT KEEP RUNNING HAVE AN & AT THE END.
    # ipager &
    # gkrellm2 &
    exec ~/.left &
i've tried ~/.left, ~/.left &, exec ~/.left, and the above (also substituted /home/elias/ for ~ just for fun).  the number after sleep is the time after fluxbox has started until it runs the commands.  i've tried 4 so I would have plenty of time to see if anything happened.
    ideas?  answers?  Thanks in advance

    FIGURED IT OUT
I stuck "exec xterm &" in .fluxbox/startup, and it didn't run.  that should have worked, so I figured the file wasn't even involved in the startup process.  so i did some diggin:
I use startx which invokes .xinitrc which ran exec fluxbox which DOES NOT read .fluxbox/startup.  now .xinitrc reads "exec startfluxbox"
AKA .fluxbox/startup wasn't being read at all!  Now it is!  And it's beautiful!  I've learned to do more exploring into what runs/is run by what.
    Thanks for the responses!

  • Fluxbox stopped working

    Hey.
For some reason fluxbox has stopped working on my box. It's has been working until yesterday when I installed fbpanel, pypanel and xdm (not that I think this is related, just to point out that it was working before I started playing with openbox). X starts fine with openbox3 and probably any other wm. All I got in .xinitrc, besides from what is commented out, is exec fluxbox. Oh, I'm getting a "apps file failure" output when X fails to start, been googling some on this one without much succes. Any help is appreciated.
    Regards.

    Hi there...
Every time i start fluxbox, my wbar-settings are gone...
the defined icons are ok, but the size of the icons and the transparence of the wbar-background differ.
I want to have a fully transparent background and an iconsize of 48 pixels...
How can i achive that wbar starts with these config?

  • [SOLVED] Changing default keymaping in fluxbox

Right, here's one I'm finding interesting and a little frustrating.
My default keymapping in fluxbox is set to us and I can't change it.
My keymapping is set to uk in rc.conf and I can get uk in the terminal.
I have also set the xorg.conf file to contain the following lines in the eyboard section:
    Option        "XkbRules" "xorg"
    Option        "XkbLayout" "gb"
I tested x before installing fluxbox by doing startx and it worked ok, the keyboard mapping was set to uk.
I have installed fluxbox and have set it to start when using the startx command in my user account, leaving root to use just normal x.
In fluxbox the keyboard is mapped to us instead of gb, but it's ok in normal x.
The only way I can get around this is to use the setxkbmap gb command in the xterm of fluxbox, but doing this everyti,e i boot is annoying.
I've also tried adding the line setxkbmap gb to the startup file ~./fluxbox/startup but that does not work either.
Any and all suggestions welcome. (And yes I have read posts on other forums and searched on google).

    hi.
put this line on your ~/.fluxbox/startup
    setxkbmap <language_symbol> &
replace "<language_symbol>" with the language symbol you want
you may check them with the command
    ls /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/
(pt stands for portuguese, fr for french, etc..)
put it just before "exec fluxbox"
edit: sorry I didn't realized that you have tested this before

  • SOLVED Fluxbox and Nitrogen problem

Ok so I've tried many ways to set my background in Fluxbox. I try not to ask for help but this is really frustrating me. So I installed nitrogen, went to the directory my background is at, and hit apply, and it worked. So then I went to my  ~/.fluxbox/startup  file and added in "nitrogen --restore &" like below. However it didn't work. I really want this to work, I spent a large amount of time earlier today trying to get fbsetbg to work, then trying to get feh to work, none of it worked for me.
    # Applications you want to run with fluxbox.
    # MAKE SURE THAT APPS THAT KEEP RUNNING HAVE AN ''&'' AT THE END.
    # unclutter -idle 2 &
    # wmnd &
    # wmsmixer -w &
    # idesk &
    nitrogen --restore &
    # And last but not least we start fluxbox.
    # Because it is the last app you have to run it with ''exec'' before it.

    Not necessarily.
Do any other apps you put in ~/.fluxbox/startup run?
Check /usr/share/xsessions/fluxbox.desktop and make sure it says "exec startfluxbox" and not just "exec fluxbox"
I'm starting fluxbox from .xinitrc with "exec startfluxbox" and if I set wallpaper with feh, this works in my ~/.fluxbox/startup file:
    eval $(cat ~/.fehbg)
and if I set wallpaper with nitrogen, this works:
    nitrogen --restore
(edit) -- as ewaller says, have you set a wallpaper with nitrogen? "nitrogen --restore" won't work unless you do...

  • Fluxbox crashes if called with exec startfluxbox [SOLVED]

Hello, I've got a problem with fluxbox, you see, whenever I try to get it started editing my .xinitrc and adding "exec startfluxbox" it just crashes over and over, hoewever if I put "exec fluxbox" all starts ok.
What can I do in order to prevent it from crashing?
There was something in the wiki about it but now it's just broken.
"If it crashes on startup, it may be a locale problem. Setting LC_ALL to the default "C" locale, may avoid this crash. 1"
Also, if I use a login manager, it just keeps crashing and crashing.

    Solved, this was the problem.
"When you start X, either via 'startx' or by your display manager, it runs startfluxbox which ends up running this ~/.fluxbox/startup script. When this script reaches its end, the X server will shut down (or you will return to your login manager). This is why by default you must have exec fluxbox as the final line in your script, or in the latter case, the wait $fbpid line, both of which will suspend the script's execution until fluxbox exits. This ensures the X server keeps running for as long as fluxbox itself is running, which is usually what you want - Your session will be really short otherwise "
    I just followed the instructions at http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.php?title … artup_file

  • Fluxbox and wallpaper

I am using fluxbox 1.0.0 with feh to draw wallpaper on desktop. The problem i am facing is that wallpaper is flashed for a sec and then it is replaced by a cream color background. Following is my fluxbox startup file:
    # fluxbox startup-script:
    # Lines starting with a '#' are ignored.
    # You can set your favourite wallpaper here if you don't want
    # to do it from your style.
    # fbsetbg -f /home/jaideep/pictures/wallpaper.png
    # This sets a black background
    /usr/bin/fbsetroot -solid black
    # This shows the fluxbox-splash-screen
    # fbsetbg -C /usr/share/fluxbox/splash.jpg
    # Other examples. Check man xset for details.

  • Fluxbox broken when launched via qingy

Not sure what's going on, but for some reason out of the blue fluxbox no longer works properly when launched by qingy.  FB launches, but seems to only partially start up.  The desktop background is black, instead of showing my wallpaper, and although I can right-click on the desktop to bring up a menu, when I click on anything in the menu (e.g., aterm) it never gets launched.
This isn't a fluxbox-specific issue, as I'm able to launch FB fine from a different desktop manager (slim).  And it isn't a qingy-specific issue, as I'm able to launch other WM's just fine from qingy (e.g., icewm, fvwm crystal, etc.)
What's odd is that this combination of qingy/fluxbox was working fine up until recently, and I haven't changed anything in my qingy configuration in ages.  I just haven't used this combo in a while, and now when I come back to it it somehow got broken (by some unrelated package upgrade, I'm guessing).
My qingy fluxbox launch script reads as follows, btw:
    [darose@daroselin ~]$ cat /etc/qingy/xsessions/fluxbox
    #!/bin/dash
    . /etc/profile
    /usr/bin/startfluxbox
Anyone have any idea what might have broken this and/or how to fix?
    TIA!

Well, I got hit by this again when I updated world on my Gentoo desktop, so I guess it was time I finished investigating this.  Unfortunately that update included a whole bunch of X libraries, so tracking this down further to a specific package doesn't sound very fun.  But at least I figured out the cause of the weirdness and a workaround.
For some reason, Fb is trying to execute programs on the :0 display, but the X server uses the :1 display.  I know of two workarounds, but I haven't bothered to determine how either might effect the use of other login or window managers.
    1. Tell Fb to use the correct display.  The last command in the $HOME/.fluxbox/startup file should execute fluxbox.  Change this to something like:
    exec fluxbox -display :1.0
    OR
    2. Tell Qingy to use the correct display.  In Qingy's configuration file at /etc/qingy/settings, set this option:
    x_server_offset = 0
    Enjoy.

  • [Fluxbox] Fails to spawn graphical apps

Hi folks, I've got an interesting problem with my freshly installed fluxbox. I was using fluxbox with no problem before I reinstalled my system — all "~/.fluxbox/keys" working, all "~/.fluxbox/apps" working, etc. — and so I transferred my "~/.fluxbox/" directly over to my new system in the hope that I could continue where I left off. However, now my ":Exec" keys cannot generate X applications, nor can my ":RootMenu". The ":Exec" key to open ":RootMenu" (Control Escape) works, but when I select either "xterm" or "Run" — the only two apps I have in there — neither of them open. Fortunately, my "~/.fluxbox/startup" contains `terminal`, and happily that does open when fluxbox starts, and I can open all of my X apps from the command line, but this is a bit of a circuitous way to go about opening, for example, Writer, when I have a shortcut bound to it in "~/.fluxbox/keys".
Has anyone encountered a problem similar to this, or have any suggestions as to how I can solve it?
`xev` provides the following output when I press "Ctrl+w":
KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x1800001,
    root 0xaa, subw 0x0, time 153392505, (-171,408), root:(480,425),
    state 0x4, keycode 25 (keysym 0x77, w), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (17) ""
    XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (17) ""
    XFilterEvent returns: False
(Within the quote marks is actually an unknown character, thus:)
while a "w" alone produces this:
KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x1800001,
    root 0xaa, subw 0x0, time 153550462, (169,177), root:(820,194),
    state 0x0, keycode 25 (keysym 0x77, w), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (77) "w"
    XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (77) "w"
    XFilterEvent returns: False
    if this is relevant.
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the delay, folks: I've been a little unwell.
Yeah, you're right, rockin turtle, my keys are setup the same. I've since tried my `sudo poweroff` shortcut (pastebin, l.102) and can confirm that that works, so it seems that it's only the shortcuts which need to draw a window, such as, e.g. firefox (l.152) which don't function. The only exception to this, is that the shortcut for fluxbox's :RootMenu (l.168) does work. I've tried running fluxbox as a fresh user with no configuration, and discovered that, while the :RootMenu does pop up, it cannot spawn xterm. I now think the problem isn't so much with the keyboard shortcuts, but with fluxbox's ability to spawn graphical apps. Would it be possible that fluxbox is having a problem communicating with Xorg and perhaps doesn't know which display to try and draw apps on?
yvonney, I've installed xmonad and tried to boot into it, only to discover that I'll have to create a config before I can make any sense of it. I'll try and do that, and if xmonad fails to spawn apps then I'll assume that the problem is with my Xorg config, and not just fluxbox.

  • Veeeeeery noob-like questions about fluxbox

Hi all, i sat up today my first-ever flux and i have 2 questions:
    1) how do i setup shell transparency? i have xbcompmgr launching before flux into .xinitrc, but urxvt still has black background (when i use awesome/wmii wms it works)
    2) i have dual head set up with xrandr (LVDS1 1366X768 and VGA1 1024X768) and sometimes when i fullscreen windows, they exceed boundaries or don't show titlebar (so i cannot move them around, which apparently fixes all) any help here?
and if you have any suggestions on what i can use (actually i just tryed batterymon and i like it) to improve my flux, everything is welcome thanks all!

    Sure!
    #!/bin/bash
    # fluxbox startup-script:
    # Lines starting with a '#' are ignored.
    # Change your keymap:
    xmodmap "$HOME/.Xmodmap"
    # Applications you want to run with fluxbox.
    # MAKE SURE THAT APPS THAT KEEP RUNNING HAVE AN & AT THE END.
    # unclutter -idle 2 &
    # wmnd &
    # wmsmixer -w &
    # idesk &
    # And last but not least we start fluxbox.
    # Because it is the last app you have to run it with exec before it.
    xcompmgr &

  • Fluxbox background won't set

Just (seriously) trying Fluxbox for the first time and I'm having trouble getting my background to automatically set. I have
    fbsetbg -f /my/bg/image.png
in ~/.fluxbox/startup and when I start fluxbox I see said wallpaper flicker on screen for a nano second before flux goes to the theme's default grey background. If I enter the command manually after fluxbox has started the wallpaper stays.
Any ideas what might be wrong? (I'm using feh, btw.)

The default theme appears to define its own background which is over-riding the one you are setting since fbsetbg is being executed before fluxbox has started.  if you chage the entry to something like
    ( sleep 2 && fbsetbg -f /my/bg/image.png ) &
that should delay the execution of fbsetbg until after fluxbox is running and you should see your desired background.

  • Question. login to fluxbox. autostart command. don't sudo. ?

The system includes a normal user (via the console).
    He called FLUXBOX.
How can I make this addition to the three revealed a terminal window as root with some of these teams?
p.s: without using sudo. all automatically should be.

I'm sorry. I don't understand. Is this correct?
boot -> normal user login -> start X and Fluxbox -> autostart terminal window as root
Add "sudo xterm &" in the file "~/.fluxbox/startup".
To remove the "sudo" password, use "visudo". http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sudo
I think an automatic xterm with root is dangerous.

  • Fluxbox [solved]

So far, I have installed the base packages of arch from ftp, changed the hostname, changed eth0 to dhcp, pacman -Sy xorg, pacman -Sy hwd, hwd -xa, pacman -Sy fluxbox, and updated hostname in /etc/hosts. at this point, startfluxbox gives the error...
failed to set locale, reverting to "c"
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::string'
    /root/.fluxbox/startup: line 12: 1944 aborted              /usr/bin/sbsetroot -solid black
warning: failed to set locale, reverting to "C"
    error: couldn't connect to XServer
Anyone know where I went wrong?

okay - i started over and used the following steps...
    1. install arch off 0.7.1 ftp base installation (all packages in base), changing timezone, hostname, and eth0 (to dhcp) in /etc/rc.conf and localhost in /etc/hosts.
    2. reboot
    3. passwd
    4. pacman -Sy xorg
    5. pacman -Sy hwd
    6. hwd -xa
    7. pacman -Sy fluxbox
    8. add "exec startfluxbox" to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
    9. adduser tony
    10. log in as tony
    11. startx
at this point, i see the screen resolution change to 1024x768 for a second and go black - it looks like its going to work but then i get kicked back into bash and see several messages. among these is a "no matching section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:0) found /home/tony/.xinitrc: line 9: exec: wmaker: not found"
