Fonts incorrectly embedded in CS5

Apologies if this has been asked before, but the forum search box seems not to work...
I have a problem with CS5 embedding fonts for no good reason. To replicate:
Create new AS3 fla file
In publish settings, click 'Generate Size report'
Put some text on the stage - Classic text, static (Though it doesn't seem to matter)
Make sure the font is '_sans' (There is no 'Use device fonts' option for this font choice)
Publish the file
Note that _sans is now embedded in the SWF, occupying bytes in the size report.
Try the same in CS3, and there is nothing embedded, as you would expect. Unfortunately I can't get my fla loaded into CS3 because CS5 will only allow me to export as CS4.
Similarly, change the font to something specific, like Verdana, and set it to use device fonts and it still embeds font data (We're talking about 3 or 4k) but doesn't list any glyphs.
Occasionally though, by screwing around, it doesn't embed anything. Then nudge some text in some magical way and it's back to embedding redundant data.
Is there a bug for this? Is there somewhere to report bugs, or search for existing bugs? Am I doing it wrong? Is there a known workaround?
Help!

Hi again,
I made several experiments with the following results:
On the mac ther is still a font reported in the size report, but is is about 15 to 22 bytes depending on font (not) used. That can be tolerated I'd say, but still I don't understand why there is any increase in size and why there is a difference with different device-fonts. as it seems there is no need as the next point proofs.
I can make and use the Textfield with AS and there is not a single byte of font (Symbol) to be found in the size report and inside the swf.
decompiled the swf with the 70k of "gohst" font-symbol, and it came up in the library as a font symbol.
Can anyone reproduce this behavior?
There is a slightly paranoid afterthought:
There are fonts that are expressedly forbidden to embed and with a lot of others you are always in a gray area (legally). If Flash embeds Font-Symbols -as one might conclude from my last observation- without the developer's knowingthis might even have legal reprocussions...
(Maybe not the biggest thing, but sometimes lawyers can do what quality-control won't )

  • Unicode font rendering issue: Photoshop CS5 extended

    Hello,
I am using PS CS5 extended and while typing in Malayalam, the stage render the font incorrectly. But the layer name appears correctly. This is a sample text i have captured. Irrespective of the font i am using, the same error is coming and the word is getting displayed correctly on my MS Word. I typed the text using http://www.google.com/intl/ml/inputtools/cloud/try/

Hello, I'm not familiar with what Asian languages CS5 support (I'm using a later version) but check in your Edit/Preferences/Type to see if you have something related to Asian languages.

  • Fonts not embedding when "save as" pdf

Version: Photoshop CS4 64 bit on Windows Vista 64.
Issue: fonts not getting embedded during conversion to pdf.
I am attempting to save files for commercial printing in Photoshop pdf format (file-save as-pdf). In the past, using previous versions of Photoshop, the fonts have always been embedded in the pdf document when I choose the "Press Quality" pdf preset. However, now, even when I simplify my Photoshop source file down to the most basic level (one non-background layer with one line of type using a font I KNOW has successfully embedded before) the resulting pdf reports NO embedded fonts (no fonts at all, actually) and when sized up a great deal in Acrobat Pro shows pixelation as though the type was converted to a graphic. If I open the resulting pdf file in Photoshop the text is still editable though...
I have Photoshop files that were built using a previous version of Photoshop (CS2). When I open these in Photoshop CS4 and save as pdf the fonts are embedded just as they always were so the problem lies not with the CS4 version of Photoshop itself but rather with NEW files created by it. It seems that any NEW files I create using Photoshop CS4 wil not embed their fonts when saved as pdfs.
    Help !!?!! (example file attached)

Good points. To test that out I tried substituting different non-commercial fonts (Arial, Tahoma, Times, etc.) and then saving as a pdf. No matter what fonts I try they don't get embedded. So that would seem to rule out the idea that Photoshop CS4 is now restricting the embedding of fonts to non-commercial ones.
I have poured through the save-as-pdf options in GREAT detail - have tried many various options and don't see any settings that have either made a difference or seem relevant. According to Adobe documentation anytime you select "Press Quality" as the preset the fonts should automatically be embedded.
The really odd thing is, if I take a psd file that was originally created using a previous version of Photoshop, delete all the layers and then create one single line type layer so that it is identical in every way to my CS4 test file, any font I select gets embedded when I convert that file to pdf - same exact pdf preset - all file settings the same - everything! - except that it was originally created using a previous Photoshop version.
    Does that make ANY sense??

  • None of my fonts install into photoshop cs5. why?

I had my computer repaired a few months ago by Mac Medics and ever since my photoshop will not install fonts. Its photoshop cs5. I have an osx 10.6.8 system. The fonts install fine in all other adobe and microsoft programs. I tried doing what several of the forums online suggested and nothing is working. Am I missing something? I have reinstalled photoshop. I have done the Application Support route, I have emptied caches. I'm trying to fix it myself before i call MMac Medics. Ideas?

Hi Joe. Yes I did that. In fact, yesterday I did it again but I completely uninstalled the whole Creative Suite and disabled it. I reinstalled it. This time I at least found that the Adobe font folder was not empty as it had been before I uninstalled CS. The programs still don't grab the font from my font library like they should but I was at least able to make aliases as before and drop them into the folder. That worked. However, they should be loading directly into the applications.
Most "well behaved" (designed to Apple standard coding practices) applications use the fonts directly out of OS X's own font library, but Photoshop has some old code that builds and uses its own font library. One of Adobe's contributions to their reputation of being a memory hog. IIRC Photoshop Elements and InDesign both have a much newer code base and use the system font library. Why this is creating a problem for you only Adobe knows for sure.

Another issue I've had is that nearly a dozen times over the last three months I get a grey'd out screen and in 50 different languages it tells me to power my computer off. I need to take it back to Medics. Maybe they can fix both issues. For now, I can work with it. Thanks for all the input.
That, my friend, is called a full blown kernel panic and those can be a real bear to diagnose unless they are reliably repeatable. While kernel panics can be caused by software problems the most common causes are a bad CPU, a bad logic board, or bad RAM. I hope you either have Applecare or Mac Medics has you covered under a service warranty on their work as a new CPU or logic board can get pricey!

  • Fonts Not Embedding Consistently with PDF Export - Inconsistent Fix and Unknown Cause

I have had ongoing problems with PDF export from FrameMaker. Sometimes the correct fonts do not embed in the PDF and Times New Roman is substituted. The problem appears and disappears and is causing me a lot of lost time and frustration.
I am running FrameMaker 9.0 fully patched on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have seen people complain about this issue and am familiar with the suggested fixes. However, the exact cause and solution eludes me because the problem continues to recur and I am only able to recover with guesswork and workarounds.
    Initially I did the following:
    ACROBAT PDF SETTINGS
    - In the printer properties for Adobe PDF settings I turned off the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts."
    ACROBAT DISTILLER SETTING
Under "Font" Settings I changed the following:
    - Under "Settings/Font Locations" I added the font folder for Technical Communication Suite 2.0 and made sure all the fonts existed there and in the Windows default font directory.
    - Under "Settings/Edit Adobe PDF Setting/Fonts" I changed the following options:
                - Selected "Embed all fonts"
                - Under "Embedding" chose "Always Embed" for the target fonts.
I tweaked these settings for hours and got no results. Then I rebooted and the problem had magically disappeared. I fixed the issue in the same way on another machine and the results were permanent and I was just happy to finally have it fixed, But this time it didn't last.
I should note that upon reboot, when I used the stock "PDF Job Options," the correct fonts still embedded, leading me to believe that the fix had nothing to do with the changes I made to Distiller settings.
After reboot I generated PDFs with the correct fonts embedded. Then I shut down FM, but left the system running. The next morning I opened FM again and the same problem occurred.
So I rebooted again -- and the problem disappeared again. I therefore thought maybe the issue fixes on reboot but recurs when you shut down FM and reopen. So I shut down FM again and reopened, but it is still working fine for the moment.
I verified that the Adobe PDF settings under "Printers & Devices" that I turned off (Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts) remained correctly unchecked through all these changes.
I would really like to know why this happens so I can resolve it permanently and avoid more lost time.
    Thanks in advance,
    Douglas

The common theme I'm seeing here is that the setting edits you make in
Distiller through the FM "Save As PDF" option don't seem to take effect.
Do you know if that is true or could you elaborate on the notorious nature
    of this method for me?
    >
There are too many potential and transient problems to list. The only thing
I can say is that I've been an active member of the FrameUsers listserv
    (http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers) since FM version 6.0,
circa 2001, and probably 95% of the PDF problems reported there have been
fixed simply by using print to Adobe PDF (or to Acrobat Distiller in older
PDF versions), instead of using Save as PDF. Common advice there has always
been to avoid Save as PDF and even some Adobe employees have recommended
against using it. It doesn't matter which FM version.
The once-busy FrameUsers listserve has been fading away, recently, as this
new Adobe forum software allows reading via e-mail, and attachment of
screenshots.  Even if you look around on this forum now, you'll probably
find that there are two main fixes for issues with PDF. One is NOT using
Save as PDF, which seems to fix a whole bunch of issues. The other is the
use of a Windows hotfix to squash a Windows OS bug that causes dropped
    characters in PDFs.
In the rare instances that someone has issues with printing to PDF, they are
almost always related to errors in settings. Or occasionally someone can't
embed fonts because they are trying to the embed the virtual fonts that come
with their printer driver instead of fonts that have actually been installed
on their computer. (The fonts are hard-wired on their printer, so the system
can use them but not embed them.)

  • How to prevent auto font substitution in Photoshop CS5?

Previously in CS4 you could open a PSD with missing fonts and have the file still open and display the font properly on screen. Only if you tried to edit that type layer would it auto subsitute and force you to update the font. Now in CS5, just opening the PSD auto substitutes all missing fonts to Myriad. How do you prevent that from happening? It's really irratating. Thanks all that respond.

    Gotta agree with screenname_1001 here.
I've seen several files open, warn me that a font is missing giving "OK" or "Cancel" options. Upon clicking "OK" the font is automatically substituted with Myriad Pro and there's no way of knowing what the original font was.
I've opened files in Graphics Converter or Preview to simply figure out what the font name was.
I have not ruled out font management software as the issue though. This may simply be a symptom of having FontAgent Pro installed.

  • USPTO Upload rejected due to "font not embedded"

I am having trouble embedding fonts in my PDF documents.  I am creating MSWord documents with TimesNewRoman font.  I print (save) them to PDF.  I use the Advanced Edit function "TouchUp Text Tool" to embed the fonts.  And then save and close.  I reopen the PDF and use the Advanced Edit function again to check if the fonts are embedded and "embed font" is checked and greyed out but it says "Cannot embed font".
Can anyone help me out here?  I am trying to submit my patent applications using the USPTO EFS-Web system and it keeps rejecting it saying I need to embed fonts.  It is their electronic system.
    Thanks,
    JohnInChicago

You say "Print (save)". Which is it.
You should be able to embed the fonts easily by printing to the Adobe PDF printer (and choosing to embed fonts). That is unless it's a font that isn't licensed to be embedded.

  • Fonts not Embedded

    Hi everyone,
I am using InDesign CS 5.5. We make pdf but my some fonts not embedded. We use all fonts are opentype.
    (1) We use font Agent Pro then same problem appear
    (2) If we place fonts in InDesign Fonts folder again same problem appear in PDF files.
Kindly suggest what we do thank you so much.

    >my some fonts not embedded
Rhe only font in that image that doesn't say "embedded" -- the one you highlight -- says "embedded subset". That is the SAME as "embedded".
(Not really of course, but the difference is much less than with what you seemed to think: that if a font status is NOT showing the exact text "embedded", then it must mean it is "not embedded". That is simply not true.)

  • Embedding fonts in Bridge (Photoshop CS5)

    Hi folks!
I'm sorry for posting but I still have trouble with creating PDF via Bridge.
I have sveral PSD-Files (CS5 made) using several image- and textlayers.
Now I want to create multipage-PDF using Bridge that comes with PS CS5.
Works fine so far but Bridge does not embed those fonts used in the PSD!
Seems to me Bridge just merges all layers to one pixelbased image and saves it in PDF-format.
    But that's no good deal!
In CS2 there was a much better solution in PS2 allowing to create multipaged PDF with embedded fonts.
Is there any chance to embed fonts with Bridge?
Plz don't tell me to use Acrobat or InDesign because I'm only using PS CS5.
    Thx!

  • How to disable automatic font embedding in CS5?

I installed CS5 and opened an old .fla which did not embed the Arial font because everyone has it already. Mostly it is used for user-entered and dynamic content.  However, CS5 is auto-embedding the few characters I use in Arial, and all of the other characters are no longer showing up in the swf file.  The only fix seems to be embedding the entire Arial font in the movie, which is too large since I want to be able to support all kinds of characters.
Is there a way to turn off auto-font embedding?  This feature seems well-intentioned but critically flawed if it can't be turned off.

    Hi,
You can set the TextField's Anti-alias setting to "Use device fonts" if you don't want to embed the font.

  • Font in embedded swf now not showing in ie6

    Hi There,
We've noticed that a .swf which was recently updated using CS5 no longer displays the font in ie6 - it was originally created several years ago in CS3 so we're wondering if something has changed with regard to the way Flash embeds fonts?
This tutorial looks fairly extreme for something so simple: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/embedding_fonts.html
The font is the Microsoft font Tahoma and we've updated our test machine to the latest version of Flash - but still no joy.
When I click various text in the Flash file, they're all set to the following in the properties panel:
    - Classic Text
    - Static Text
Is there a simple way to embed fonts or do you now have to create a font symbol and follow all the steps described in the above link?
Sorry, have just never noticed this before.
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

It should work just fine in IE6. You might want to make sure you don't target any version of flash higher than you absolutely need to. I'm not sure how extensively supported IE6 is with Adobe any longer.
If you're not using any dynamic text and it's literally all static then you don't need to embed the font at all. Flash does that for you automatically on static text fields. The user (as kglad said) does not need to have the font installed. The text is baked into flash as vector outlines.

  • Fonts not embedding for iOS app in App Store

    Hi all,
I'm having an issue using embedded fonts. Currently, I use 6 or so font files throughout my app. These fonts all display properly in the AIR simulator, as well as developer builds installed on the actual device. The problem comes about when I make actual builds for the App Store. The only thing I'm changing is the provisioning file and certificate, and yet none of these fonts display correctly. It looks like it's defaulting to Arial or something, like when you set embedAsCFF incorrectly.
I'm currently waiting on a build to be approved where I can switch between two versions of the fonts, one as embedAsCFF=true, the other as embedAsCFF=false.
Because the stock SDK wasn't working, I'm using Apache Flex 4.11 SDK, with AIR 13 beta and I'm SURE that I installed the Font Embedding tools with the SDK. I just realized while writing this post that Flex 4.12 is now available, so I'll try to download and make a build with that.
Does anyone have any idea why these fonts would be missing when going from the developer build to the App Store build? The intensely frusterating thing about this is that everything will work in the test builds, and a week later when my update makes it to the app store it isn't working and I have to wait another week to try to fix it.

Don't worry it's not your device.  A lot of people using IO5 are having this problem for the past 6 hours.  Apple should address it soon.  If you need to search for apps you can either google the name of app in Safari and click on the link.  This should open the app in the App Store.  Other work around is if you have a program like AppShopper it will let you do a search that opens the App in the App Store.

  • Fonts missing in Photoshop CS5

I have many DVD case templates I created with Photoshop CS2.  I now have Photoshop CS5.  I am opening these DVD case templates with PS CS5.  There have been several instances where the fonts I used in CS2 is not available in CS5.  Is it possible for me to import these fonts into PS CS5?  If so, how?
    Thanks,
    Angela

One follow-up question concerning the "missing fonts" issue.....
With Photoshop CS5, if the font is missing the program will alert you.  Because of these alerts, I was able to determine which fonts were missing in my Photoshop projects and install the missing fonts.
Unfortunately, Premiere Pro CS5 will use the "next best" font if a font is missing.  Therefore, I was trying to determine which fonts were "incorrect" within my APP CS5 projects and install the missing fonts accordingly.
My question.....I have approx 360 fonts from my XP computer.  Would there be any harm in installing all of these fonts on my Windows 7 computer, to make sure I cover my bases?  Currently, there are approx 300 fonts on my Windows 7 computer.
I have verified that if I try to install a font that is currently on my Windows 7 computer, I will get a prompt asking if I want to replace the existing font.  Obviously in this case, I would not replace an Windows 7 font with a Windows XP font.
    Take care,
    Angela

  • TextFlow and Modesto font incorrect rendering...

    Hi,
I have a project using TextFlow with StyledRichText that calculates positioning / scaling based on font metrics in font files that have been embedded into loaded CSS SWF.
All works well apart from one specific font. Opening the font in Fontographer or similar shows the glyphs extend beyond the expected region and this shows on screen as the letters extending beyond the bounds of the text field... Or, rather... _mostly_ displaying beyond the bounds of the text field. Occasionally, the bits outside get chopped off and occasionally the TextFlow decides it only has room for one rather than two lines and...
    Well, it sucks, basically.
As you zoom in and out, the text rendering switches so that sometimes I am looking at two lines and others at one.
Needless to say, dumping the font entirely would be preferable, but that isn't possible for visual design reasons that I am not qualified to comment on.
    So...
Does anybody have any ideas how I can detect, react to and / or correct for the weird font metrics in this specific font? (I should add, the fix has to be compatible with the somewhere around 150 fonts that _do_ work.)
    Cheers,
    G

Nope, Voiceover is NOT enabled. I think it's the new font that I installed today called Mikiyu Honey (downloaded from http://kawaii-me.org/you/fonts/). I uninstalled it by dragging it to the trash, emptied trash, cleaned out font cache, STILL rendering the Gimpshop menu incorrectly. No other program is experiencing this problem.
