Force Index and Group By Exception

Hello,
I'm using Oracle 8 and PL/SQL Developer 7 and when i want to perform this query :
select
/*+ INDEX(gprs_cdr IK_GPRS_CDR_CREAT_DTE) */ trunc(creation_date, 'D')
from
gprs_cdr
where
creation_date between to_date('26/01/2006', 'DD/MM/YYYY') and to_date('30/06/2006', 'DD/MM/YYYY')
group by trunc(creation_date, 'D')
I have the Exception : ORA-00979 : not a GROUP BY expression
Do you have a solution for this please ?
Thanks

Hi,
Index hint will not be a problem for the error. for me its working fine.

  • Bitmap indexes and group by

I'm trying to understand why Oracle 8.1.6 sometimes uses bitmap indexes sometimes not.
Of course I have all the statistics, my bitmap indexes are valid and so on.
    The problem is this:
    - I have a customer table very very large
    - I have many columns with bitmap indexes
    - I run this statement:
    select education_key, count(*)
    from customer
    group by education_key
and obtain a correct execution plan:
    0 SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer=CHOOSE (Cost=235 Card=5 Bytes=10)
    1 0 SORT (GROUP BY NOSORT) (Cost=235 Card=5 Bytes=10)
    2 1 BITMAP CONVERSION (COUNT)
3 2 BITMAP INDEX (FULL SCAN) OF 'CL_EDU'
with the use of the bitmap indexes (only five different values)
    - now I want to put a condition on a column
    which has a bitmap index.
    The new statement is:
    select education_key, count(*)
    from customer
    where age_key = 30
    group by education_key
No join, only a scan of a sort of
fact table. In this case Oracle
doesn't use the bitmap index on
    education_key:
    0 SELECT STATEMENT Optimizer=CHOOSE (Cost=3458 Card=5 Bytes=20
    1 0 SORT (GROUP BY) (Cost=3458 Card=5 Bytes=20)
2 1 TABLE ACCESS (BY INDEX ROWID) OF 'CUSTOMER' (Cost=3395 C
    ard=18296 Bytes=73184)
3 2 BITMAP CONVERSION (TO ROWIDS)
4 3 BITMAP INDEX (SINGLE VALUE) OF 'CL_AGE'
With this execution plan Oracle has to
read some blocks from the table when I
think that using both the bitmap indexes
    the query is faster.
Someone knows why Oracle has this
    behaviour? I'm trying to change
    many things (also altering statistics
value), but it seems that with a
    condition Oracle doesn'use the bitmap
index on the group by column.
    null

Hi Michael, what is the address for the lasagne? ....
In init.ora.parms I had 32Mb for bitmap index merge, I suppose it's enough, hovewer I have tried to increase it and nothing changes.
    I already use STAR_TRASFORMATION_ENABLED=TRUE.
I have tried with different level of statistics (estimate, compute, also with very precise histograms), always the same
behaviour. I have also tried to change, in a manual way, the statistics in order to change the Oracle behaviour but nothing ...
For this particular statement even if I use the INDEX_COMBINE hint, I mantain the same execution plan.
I use CHOOSE, FIRST_ROWS, ALL_ROWS: always the same behaviour.
I think that Oracle is not able to use a bitmap index on a column involved in a group by when there is another condition in the select.
Hovewer with bitmap indexes, I have many other problems (to read 1% of the table Oracle decides to make a full table scan even if there are the correct bitmap indexes ...).
Many of them are solved using BITMAP_INDEX, but it's difficult to use it in a query tool like Discover or Business Objects because I have to fix the use of INDEX_COMBINE also in situation in which this use is not correct from a performance point of view.
The life with the query optimizer is very hard!
    Thank you for your guesses

  • Bitmap index and group by queries

Please could someone offer me some advice for a data warehouse table I am designing which will have ad hoc queries running against it mainly grouping by day/month/year and needs to use as little resources as possible.
    TRANS_DATE DATE, LOC_ID VARCHAR2(8), USER_ID VARCHAR2(8), TRANS_CODE VARCHAR2(3), COUNT NUMBER(8,0)
In populating the table I truncated the trans_date to hourly data and aggregated the other columns to give me an hourly count for every combination of location, user and code. I wasn't sure if I should create 2 more columns with truncated dates by day and by month? There are 200,000 rows per day in this table.
The first 4 columns have low cardinality so I decided to create Bitmap indexes on them. However, when querying in Application Express SQL Workshop and looking at the query plan it seems that a full table scan is being performed whenever I use a group_by(example below), even when i use a hint for the index. The bitmap index is used on simple select queries with where clauses but no grouping.
    SELECT LOC_ID, count(TOTAL)
    FROM TRANS_SUMMARY
    GROUP BY LOC_ID
Am I doing this the right way? Or would multiple materialised views / btree indexes be a better way of ensuring fast group_by queries on this table?
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul

You don't need a separate materialized view for every combination. You may need a few carefully chosen combinations, in addition to appropriate dimensions for rollups.
For example, a materialized view that aggregated dat based on location_id, trans_code, and hour could be used to aggregate by location_id, trans_code and day (i.e. adding up 24 rows from the MV for each trans_code and location_id) or location_id, trans_code and month (i.e. adding 24*30 rows from the MV for each trans_code and location_id). The more rows you have to aggregate, and the more frequently the higher level aggregates are accessed, the more likely you'd want to have a separate MV that aggregates at the higher level (i.e. if you're accessing monthly summary data totals all the time).
If you are rarely aggregating by trans_code, and you have lots of different trans_code values, you could use the one MV that aggregated by location_id, trans_code, and hour to do a monthly aggregate just on location_id and month, but that requires adding 24*30*# trans_code rows from the MV, which may be expensive. It may make sense to have a separate MV for that, or a set of MV's that are aggregated just by location_id and day, or some combination.

I just purchased an Iphone and love it except I'm surprised and annoyed that there is no way to create a group within contacts.  I coach a youth basketball team and routinely want to fire off a mass email or text to the same group. Am I missing something?

When I click on my contacts icon on my phone there is a Groups choice in the upper left hand corner. Make sure you are in All Contacts and not a specific person.

Note: I'm assuming that you'll take not some comments on further enhancement:
    - " INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS "
    - use of field symbols
    - I didn't modify it yet since my focus if for MSEG~M
    - cannot make material number as mandatory field
Objective: Force to use index MSEG~M
    Problem:
After adding the Oracle Hint, I did the analysis in ST05 and it seems like index M is still not being forcefully
utilize instead MSEG~0 is being used.
I replaced the Oracle Hint with:
      %_hints oracle u2018INDEX(u201CT_01u201D u201CMSEG~Mu201D)u2019.
In ST05, I can get see that index MSEG~M is now being utilize BUT worst thing happened after applying this, the program timed out.
I already take a look on the following Notes: 129385, 130480, 772497, 162034, 818321 but nothing seems to be helpful in my problem.
    Questions:
    1.  In syntax %_hints oracle u2018INDEX(u201CT_01u201D u201CMSEG~Mu201D)u2019. T_01 stands for MKPF right which is the first table, do you what's the reason for the program time out after adding this Oracle Hint?  Is this the proper syntax?
    2.  How can I force in my code to use index MSEG~M without any program timeout?
For the whole source code of my question above, please see the link:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/211740852/ZDXX0028.txt.html

Hi Thomas, thanks with the prompt reply (even if it's Saturday )
    Yes, MKPF~BUD is being used.
The budat selection is narrowed to 28 days though users can input any date range, a warning message will just be displayed if budat selection exceeded.
Yes, optimizer usually chooses the right index; I'm not in as the same experience as you are though, but I find it interesting that after I added the Oracle hints (several combination) the performance of the program was optimize up to 40% to 50%.
I uploaded a detailed SQL trace and the ABAP change done in my program, if you'll notice in the summary of the changes, after adding some hints, the duration of the program was improved..
(SQL Trace Summary of my program) this worth taking a look
    http://rapidshare.com/files/211870091/ZD28_SQL_Trace.zip.html
I made a custom index in MSEG, but unfortunately I doubt that it will be approve by our performance capacity team.  But I somehow have a hunch that this will further optimize the program.

  • Time Machine stuck on "preparing backup" and "Indexing Backup" after forced restart and install from Lion

    Hello!
I have been using Time Machine on the Time Capsule for over a month now and no problems. However when I was installing Lion it had to restart. I did not see that Time Machine was going at the time when I pushed restart until it was too late.
Now Time Machine seems to be stuck on "Preparing Backup" and "Indexing Backups". It has been nearly 20-30 minutes for Indexing and I wonder if I corrupted something or something else. If there a way I can solve this problem? Thanks!

I had this same problem, this is going to sound ridiculous but this is what I finally did. I wiped my backup, crazy right?
It's there for when your hard drive crashes, so it's not like you are going to miss much if you wipe it. Tell it to stop backing up, go to disk utility, click your external and then erase it. Go back to time machine settings and reselect it as your backup drive. It will do an initial back up again and you are good to go.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi.
Go to line 9 of your code.
You are trying to use an array there.
Suppose you have an array x[4] - this array has 4 elements indexed 0..3.
you are trying to access an element with an index higher than 3.
    Nimo.

The instance name above should be change i guess? am i correct?Given that the Application Server JMQ instance runs on port 7676 by default, you were most likely changing the wrong instance.
Try adding the jmquser to the Application Server JMQ instance and perform the login test again e.g.
    /opt/SUNWappserver/imq/bin/imqusermgr add -u jmquser -p adminpass -g user
    /opt/SUNWappserver/imq/bin/imqcmd -b webmail.example.com:7676 list dst

    Please check your security configurations.

    DropDownByKey
A DropDownByIndex UI element provides the user with a dropdown list box. You cannot select more than one entry from the selection list. The UI element consists of a text field, a button, and a selection list. Any list item already selected is displayed in the text field. When the user chooses the pushbutton, a list of all possible values is displayed.

In radiabutton we can have the only one decision. But
checkbox we can have mulitiple options.
based on the usage we choose these controls.
    for example,
    RadioButton
    Gender - o Male o Female
here we can select only one option
    for example,
    CheckBox
    your Interested Games?
    o cricket o football o valleyball o hockey
here use may have more than option.
    i hope this is enough.
award the point if ans is help full.

  • Index File group on same drive as data files

I've just found a file group used for indexes on the same drive as the data files.
Am i correct in saying there is little benefit to this. The index file group should be on it's own spindle?
Mr Shaw... One day I might know a thing or two about SQL Server!

Definitely there will be performance gain provided you are querying for related data which as references index on those index filegroups.
It helps in parallel processing , having data and index on multiple disk heads helps in reading the data parallel. For more information you can refer the below link

  • First Try with JE BDB - Indexes and Inheritance troubles... (FIXED)

    Hi Mark,
    Mark wrote:
Hi, I'm a newbie here trying some stuff on JE BDB. And now I'm having
I am happy to help you with this, but I'll have to ask you to re-post this question to the BDB JE forum, which is...
Sorry for the mistake. I know now that here is the place to post my doubts.
I'm really interested in JE BDB product. I think it is fantastic!
Regarding my first post about "Indexes and Inheritance" on JE BDB, I found out the fix for that and actually, it wasn't about "Indexes and Inheritance" but "*Inheritance and Sequence*" because I have my "@Persistent public abstract class AbstractEntity" with a "@PrimaryKey(sequence = "ID_SEQ") private Long id" property.
This class is extended by all my business classes (@Entity Employee and @Entity Department) so that my business classes have their PrimaryKey autoincremented by the sequence.
But, all my business classes have the same Sequence Name: "ID_SEQ" then, when I start running my JE BDB at first time, I start saving 3 new Department objects and the sequence for these department objects star with "#1" and finishes with #3.
Then I continue saving Employee objects (here was the problem) I thought that my next Sequence number could be #4 but actually it was #101 so when I tried to save my very first Employee, I set the property "managerId=null" since this employee is the Manager, then, when I tried to save my second Employee who is working under the first one (the manager employee), I got the following exception message:
    TryingJEBDBApp DatabaseExcaption: com.sleepycat.je.ForeignConstraintException: (JE 4.0.71) Secondary persist#EntityStoreName#com.dmp.gamblit.persistence.BDB.store.eployee.Employee#*managerId*
foreign key not allowed: it is not present in the foreign database
    persist#EntityStoreName#com.dmp.gamblit.persistence.BDB.store.eployee.Employee
    The solution:
I fixed it modifying the managerId value from "4" to "101" and it works now!
At this moment I'm trying to understand the Sequence mechanism and refining concerns about Cursors manipulation...
Have you any good material about these topics, perhaps a link where I can find more detailed information on these?
Thanks in advance Mark, thanks for your attention on this and I will post more doubts in the future for sure ;0)
    Regards,
    Diego

    Hi Diego,
I fixed it modifying the managerId value from "4" to "101" and it works now!I'm glad you found the problem. It is usually best to get the assigned ID from the entity object after you call put(), and then use that value to fill in related fields in other entities. The primary key field (assigned from the sequence) is set by the put() method.
At this moment I'm trying to understand the Sequence mechanism and refining concerns about Cursors manipulation...Have you any good material about these topics, perhaps a link where I can find more detailed information on these? >
To find documentation, start at the first message in the forum, the Welcome message:
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=250
This refers to the main JE doc page, the JE FAQ and a white paper on DPL queries. The FAQ has a section on the DPL, which refers to the javadoc. The DPL javadoc has lots of info on using cursors along with indexes (see EntityIndex, PrimaryIndex, SecondaryIndex). The white paper will be useful to you if you're accustomed to using SQL.
I don't know of any doc on sequences other than the javadoc:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/je/java/com/sleepycat/persist/model/PrimaryKey.html#sequence()
This doc will point you to info on configuring the sequence, if that's what you're interested in.

The table approved has more than 10million records and the query is taking a huge time.
The query first tries to restrict the search to only valid entities and cc (already indexed and working fine).
The cardinality of allocations, projects is around 1000, entity is 3000, and cc is around 50,000, reference number = 2000, financialyear = 4
Please suggest which index would be best to use on these columns given that there will no updations but frequent insertions.
If nothing else works than I will need to change it to pre aggregated data for overnight run .

  • Order and group images in slideshow with Places theme

    Hi,
I'm getting realy comfused in the slideshow feature of iPhoto 11
I try to get a slideshow using the Places theme (the one with the maps).
Two things that really upset me:
    - how can I order the pictures, group them instead of having them automatically arranged by time. I may want to group two trips to the same place that took place at two different dates, without having other pictures in between.
If I drag the pictures to the new place, iPhoto automatically adds a new map title, I don't want that
    - how can I increase the range of the locations. For example, I want all pictures taken in Portland appear in a Portland map section, I don't want it to then cut all pictures into 14 different sections of the town since I moved around taking pictures. For me it's still one unique event and one unique place.
Can I force it to group everything within a range of, say, 50 miles, to be shown as one unique place?
In a few words, what I try to achieve:
1- organize the pictures the way I want (timewise)
2- groups them into places I control.
Thanks for any help. Without those two controls, this slideshow is unfortunatelly 100% useless to me.
    Steve

Sorry about the slide legends -  I wouldn't have suggested changing themes if I realized you had those.
I'm not sure why that didn't work for you, it does for me, and yes there is a setting in iPhoto preferences to turn off automatic place look up (I'm not sure it would help here, I think that primarily happens when you import photos). And ivansky makes an excellent point - there's a lot of information about this in the "Help" menu - including how to "fine tune" a location to cover a larger or smaller area:
    To manage your places:
You can edit and delete the locations you have personalized.
Choose Window > Manage My Places. The Manage My Places dialog appears, showing all the personalized places that are assigned to your photos.
    Do one of the following:
To change a place name, click it and type the name you want into the field. From now on, this changed location appears in the Information pane as an option when you’re adding locations to photos or Events.
To fine-tune a location on the map, use the plus and minus buttons (in the bottom-left corner of the map) to zoom in or out of the map. You can drag the map to move it around and drag the pin to a more exact location. You can also drag the vicinity circle larger or smaller, depending on how specific you want the location to be.
To delete a location, click the minus sign to the right of the place name.If there are photos associated with this location name, a message appears, asking you to confirm. Click the “Delete place” button.
When you’re finished, click the Done button.

  • How to learn to extract data and group it

I recently met a guy who is looking to employ some folks. He got in touch with me in LinkedIn. I have done my research and I know he’s a real guy looking for people. I would like to get the job despite of the poor work conditions but I just feel the fear of failing or not being capable to do the job.
I know I have to try and it will be great if some of you could give some advice on how to do the job or how can I self-learn this. I'm ready to read books and follow instructions. Last year, I did a DBA internship so, I’m familiar with PL/SQL but I didn’t cover information on how to programme or gather data.
Here’s bit of the job information: "The work is to programme in PL/SQL to extract data and group it. You will learn how to make indexes and work with massive data. You will learn about programming performance in PL-SQL to extract data".
I have translated the job info from Spanish to English so, I hope you can get what I’m actually looking for. For the ones that can speak Spanish, this is what the guy wrote: "El trabajo es programar en PL/SQL para extraer datos y centralizarlos. Va a aprender a realizar índices y trabajar con datos masivos. Va a aprender mucho sobre performance de programación en PL-SQL para extraer datos".
    Thanks! Gracias!

    Hi chaituatp,
For this requirement, I would suggest you to get familiar with how to create VSTO applications, and how SharePoint object model works. Here are some sample code about this:
