Fortran 90 MODULE in OpenMP

Hi,
i am trying to implement OpenMP in a FORTRAN code. i use MODULE instead of common blocks. How do i define whether the contents of a module are PRIVATE. Even though i have used THREADPRIVATE for the module name and define the variables defined in the module as private, the code is taking them as SHARED. if anybody has any experience in handling MODULE with OpenMP, please let me know the correct way of implementing this
i am trying this on a SUN ultra workstation running on Solaris 10 and Sun Studio 11.
regards
manoj

thanks for your reply. unfortunately the compiler does not issue any warnings if i put a module name in TREADPRIVATE. i am now using the OMP statement inside the MODULE and it is now working.
i use the following version of the compiler:
Sun Fortran 95 8.2 Patch 121020-05 2006/12/08
thanks
regards
manoj

    I don't use fortran myself, but this 2003 archive item suggest they do :

    Added support for PAUSE and alternate returns. I'll be out of town the next couple of days, on short trip to Las Vegas. The J3 meeting was unfortunately last week, otherwise I would have popped in and said hi.
    You could try asking on their google group forum , https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/gg95

  • Calling fortran module functions from c++

    I am compiling a Fortran module with the Sun Studio Fortran compiler. The functions from this module shall be called from a C++ program. I have a name mangling problem when trying to compile or link. Actually it seems that Fortran provides names like 'module.function_' as can be seen when using nm. Putting this definition into the extern "C" statement makes the C compiler stop. After some excessive googling I found the possible bind(C) function, but this is actually not a valid option since I have not written the Fortran module myself and the solution should be somewhat compatible to other x86 compilers (here: Intel, which works fine for the name mangling)
    What is now the best option to use the Fortran module in the C++ program using Sun Studio?
    Cheers,
    Sebastian
    Sun Fire E6900
    Sun Studio 12.1

    Sebastianm
    You do not have to change the calls; you only have to change the declarations of the function in the module to add bind(c,name="whatever). In addition, you will need to recompile the rest of the Fortran code that uses the module so that
    the new bind(C) names are used in calls.
    Adding a call to the module function for the above example:
    subroutine use_example
    use example
    call print_hello()
    end subroutine use_example
    % f90 -fast -c use_example.f
    % nm -og use_example.o
    use_example.o:
    [Index] Value Size Type Bind Other Shndx Name
    [24] |000000000000|000000000000|FUNC |GLOB |0 |UNDEF |Example_print_hello
    [23] |000000000000|000000000013|FUNC |GLOB |0 |2 |use_example_
    As you can see, the compiler generates a call to Example_print_hello for the call to the module function print_hello,
    as this is the name specified in the bind(c) for example.print_hello, i.e., bind(C, "Example_print_hello").
    If you do not want to change the module at all, you might have some luck with *elfedit* to change the external
    names after the .o is produced. I suspect that doing this is as much work as adding BIND(C) to the declarations.
    Good luck and please let me know if this works for you.

  • Long OpenMP directives in FORTRAN fixed format

    Hi,
    I have to write (very)long OpenMP directives in FORTRAN fixed format but the compiler complains to any of the techniques used to split them on more than one line. Any suggestions?
    I mention that I am using a Forte 7 compiler under Solaris 8(10).
    Thanks,
    Rak

    (The Forte 7 compiler is really old. But I'm sure you know that already.)
    The compiler should accept continuations with directives.
    Doesn't something like the following work for you:
    !omp parallel do
    !omp+shared(a,b,c)

  • [S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0

    After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and  arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.
    [edit] I should mention that this upgrade was run April 30th.[/edit]
    When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
    The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
    Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines
    systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
    systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
    Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried
    journalctl _PID=1799
    systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
    systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
    which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
    Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
    Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
    As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
    I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
    I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
    This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
    Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”
    [edit2=solution]
    There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.

    Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.
    grub.cfg now looks like

    [edit] System still boots. Trying for the upgrade.
    [edit2] Still can't use Linux 4.0. I'm getting the same errors as before.
    [edit3] Successfully downgraded.
    [edit4] I looked through /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and there isn't anything in there that isn't in my laptop's. I don't know if this will help, but here is the output of "pacman -Q"

    [edit5] My /etc/modules-load.d directory is empty by the way, and "sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load" returns nothing. Note, this is all while running Linux 3.19, but I believe it should demonstrate that I don't have any special modules running. Or so I believe.

  • Llvm-gfortran-4.2, openmp, and FlasCC

    On the FlasCC prerelease forum I posted an example where I used llvm-gfortran-4.2 to produce bitcode
    that was linked to a FlasCC harness. Unfortunately I've been unable to extend this to work with openmp:
    when linking I get a number of messages:
    WARNING: Linking two modules of different data layouts!
    and the examples fails to run. I've also been unable to track the problem doen using gdb.
    Falling back to plan B, I used f2c on the Fortran source and then added the appropriate C style pragmas
    and the result works like a charm, see http://www.galcit.caltech.edu/~jjq/shock-diffraction.swf .
    I'm therefore wondering if my llvm-gfortran-4.2 is incompatible with the llvm shipped with
    FlasCC1.0.1 . They are both llvm-2.9, but I'm finding that drop7 from the pre-release
    works better, although still ultimately fails, and so there are clearly finer grain differences
    that need to be accounted for. Any suggestions for how I should recompile my llvm
    to play ball with FlasCC would be gratefully received.
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi,
      I did. I still couldn't compile any code. I remove all folders using sudo /Developer/Library/uninstall-developer-folder mode=all and reinstall Xcode 4.2.1. But the problem persists no matter how I tried. Does any one have the same problem? All these problem occurred after I upgraded Snow Leopard to Lion and Xcode 3 to Xcode 4.2.1. I also tried to install Ruby 1.9.3 and failed. That was my original reason to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion.
    -Help!!

  • Can't find modules or libraries

    I am trying to compile some fortran 90 code. I am using the -M option to specify the location of modules as indicated by the following line:
    f90 -M/home2/pncgisho/jensen/apps/f90gl-1.2.9/include/GL -c mod_OpenGL_visualization.f90
    However, I get the following error message:
    use opengl_glut
    ^
    "mod_OpenGL_visualization.f90", Line = 3, Column = 6: ERROR: "OPENGL_GLUT" is specified as the module name on a USE statement, but the compiler cannot find it.
    I know that the module is located in the directory as specified. The most frustrating aspect of the problem is that on another machine (both are SunBlade 2000's) the compiler can find the modules. I have the directories configured exactly the same on both machines and I use the exact same makefile. Do you have any suggestions as to why the compiler cannot find the modules?
    I am also having a similar issue with the linker not being able to locate libraries, eventhough I am using the -L and -l options to specify the location and names. With the libraries, if I give the complete path and name of the library (i.e., /usr/lib/libmylib.a), the linker will find it. Otherwise I get the message that the linker cannot find the libraries.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Richard Jensen

    The option -M is the one you want. Is the directory containing the
    .mod file on the machine where the compilation is done? If not,
    try copying the .mod file to a directory on the machine where the
    compilation is done, and use the option -M to specify that
    directory. If you are accessing the file using NFS, you might need
    to prefix the pathname for the directory.
    Sincerely,
    Bob Corbett

  • CS4 - Getting error when opening a .gif file - file-format module cannot parse the file.

    I am getting this popup error when trying to open a .gif file:
    "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file."
    This comes up every time I try to open a .gif file.  Even if I make a .gif file (like the image included in this post), save it and then try to open it again, I get the same error.  I tried reinstalling CS4, but the error is still there.  I have also done the reset on start-up and nothing.  Some have suggested that I open it in (Windows XP Pro) MS Paint and then save it again.  Did it and this does NOT work for me, either.
    I know it's a Photoshop problem because I can see this file everywhere, except Photoshop.  It will open here, there and everywhere, except for Photoshop.
    I've searched the Adobe Commmunity and it looks like no one has come up with a fix for this.  I'm just currious after 5 years with this problem, has there been a solution?
    Scott

  • How to call Fortran .dll file that using other library files?

    Hi,
    I am trying to do some arkward tasks using LabView, and I am desperately need help....
     A little bit background:
    1. My co-worker has some code written in Fortran, where he called other libraries (many from CERNLAB or PAW). Those stuffs are pretty powerful in mathmatical calculation and simulations.
    2. In some of my LabView code, I need to call his Fortran source code in order to do some complicated calculations. I have no capablility to translate his Fortran code to Labview (or is it even possible??), so we end up with trying to use "Call library function node" where I just provide input/outputs to communicate with his code. The idea sounds simple enough?
    3. We complie the Fortran code into .dll, and then specifiy the dll in "Call library function node". The first try with a very simple Fortran code, something like c = a+b*a, was sucessful. The dll file and Call lib function worked good. It's sort of proved the concept.
    4. Now I am trying more complicated Fortran code (say Test.dll), which calling other library (.lib files) that using typical "call xxx(a,b,c)" line, and my nightmare started....  It seems nothing was excuted when I call Test.dll in LabView.
    Questions:
    1. How do LabView know if the Test.dll code needs functions from other .lib files? Do I need to copy all the .lib files to a specific folder?
    2. When I create .dll file, for LabView to be able to use it, are there any special requirement on the way the .dll is compiled?
    3. Seems there is mismatch btw the data type in Fortran and LabView. For example, LabView's  Signed 8-bit Integer seems different with a integer in Fortran. How can i know the correlation btw data type in different langurage, i.e. LabView vs Fortran?
    4. Are there any good examples that I can take a look?
    I would highly appreicate any suggestions/helps!
    Rgds,
    Harry

    You are aware that Intel Visual Fortran is the successor to Compaq Visual Fortran (I think you made a mistype with the Virtual)? So an upgrade might be at its place.
    Anyhow I'm really not familiar with Fortran at all, but lib files are usually compiled into an EXE or DLL and not loaded dynamically. 1)
    So there should be no problem with locating those libs. What most likely is a problem are other DLL dependencies such as any Fortran Runtime library or possibly other third party DLLs the more advanced code in your DLL might be using.
    Typically most compilers can be configured to link the runtime library code statically into the DLL, as altenbach reports for the Intel compiler, otherwise you must make sure to install the  redistributable Fortran Runtime Library for your compiler. Besides that you must make sure to find out what other runtime dependencies your code might have and install them.
    1) One exception I know of is LabWindows CVI which allows to also load lib files dynamically. This is supposedly a legacy feature from LabWindows for DOS, which allowed that feature to simulate dynamic module loading in order to swap modules at runtime to work around the 640k memory limitation of DOS.

  • Handling of Fortran language extensions

    One place where Sun Fortran needs work is in management of language extensions. For example, it seems that it is not possible to exclude the generic REALLOC() extension function, meaning that it is not possible to have a generic subroutine interface of that name. The same is probably true of many other extensions. Also, using the -ansi flag causes warnings about F2003 features as extensions. It also allows incorrect use of F2003 features, and has no way to warn specifically about non-standard usage.
    I think that a good approach to language extensions is to support all of them in terms of intrinsic modules, including all of the existing non-standard extensions. Instead of compiler flags to control sets of extensions, the "-use=" flag could be used to automatically include those extensions for existing code that uses it. Supporting extensions this way also allows extensions to be used selectively in certain subroutines, and would allow renaming so that name conflicts can be avoided without completely disabling the extension.

    It may be a minority view to handle extensions as modules, but it is not a minority view to avoid interference with completely valid code. Intel Fortran compiles the code posted under bug 6579426 with no problems, despite the fact that it supports the same traditional realloc() extensions as Sun Fortran. This has to be fixed to be Standards compliant, and therefore is a bug.
    Without vendor modules, language extensions are not supposed to be brought into the name space if the first instance of their use is to declare them otherwise. If REALLOC is declared INTRINSIC, the extension becomes valid. If REALLOC is declared EXTERNAL, the extension becomes invalid, unless it is provided as an external-procedure in a library which only gets linked in if their is no such user function. Sun Fortran seems to get this right.
    If REALLOC is first seen in an INTERFACE declaration that conflicts with the intrinsic REALLOC, then the user's REALLOC takes priority. Sun Fortran gets this wrong. For example, if I declare "intrinsic :: realloc", then Intel Fortran gives me the same generic-procedure error as Sun.

  • Viewing FORTRAN globals in VS 2012 vs. VS 2010

    Good morning!
    My development team and I work with old physics simulators for modeling systems of power plants. The code is often in FORTRAN. We are starting to use VS 2012 on new projects, and we are finding that we cannot view the FORTRAN globals while debugging. When
    we bring up VS 2010, we can see the globals. I believe that we are properly loading the pdb files.
    I have also updated to VS 2012 Update 4, as suggested by this forum: https://software.intel.com/de-de/forums/topic/508319
    but it did not resolve the issue.
    We are not inclined to believe that this is an Intel FORTRAN compiler issue or an optimizer issue because we can still view the globals when using VS2010.
    We're all using Windows 7.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi Will,
    Do you install the VS2010 sp1 for your VS2010?
    As you said that it works well in VS2010, if you run your app in VS2012 with "Start without debugging", does it work well? Please also check the Error List or the Output window.
    In addition, please also check the Modules window in debugging mode, and make sure that it is not the symbols issue.
    Please change the .Net Framework =4.0 as the VS2010 in VS2012, rebuild your whole project, debug it again.
    If still no help, since this project is also related to the FORTRAN, maybe you could discuss this issue with the Intel members, so they could really repro this issue, we could know that whether it is the VS IDE issue or the project issue or others.
    Best Regards,
    Jack

    the conversion is not quite complete yet. The next version of
    Sun Studio Express (in a month or two) should have much better
    module support in dbx.

  • Fortran Compiler Bug? USE statement renaming

    The Fortran compiler
    f90: Sun Fortran 95 8.2 Patch 121020-05 2006/12/08
    complain, incorrectly I believe, about a renaming in a USE statement. Here is the source code:
    MODULE mod
    INTEGER :: m
    CONTAINS
    SUBROUTINE sub_mod(m1,x)
    INTEGER, INTENT(in) :: m1
    REAL :: x(m)
    x = 3.
    END SUBROUTINE sub_mod
    END MODULE mod
    SUBROUTINE sub(m,isum)
    USE mod, mod_m => m
    INTEGER :: m, isum
    isum = m + mod_m
    RETURN
    END
    The compiler says:
    f90 -c LStest16.f
    USE mod, mod_m => m
    ^
    "LStest16.f", Line = 12, Column = 11: ERROR: "M" is the name of a dummy argument to program unit "SUB", therefore it must not be use associated from module "MOD".
    ^
    "LStest16.f", Line = 12, Column = 11: ERROR: "M" has been use associated from module "MOD" and at least one more module. It must not be referenced.
    f90comp: 16 SOURCE LINES
    f90comp: 2 ERRORS, 0 WARNINGS, 0 OTHER MESSAGES, 0 ANSI
    Note that changing from
    REAL :: x(m)
    to
    REAL :: x(m1)
    in the sixth line makes the compiler happy.
    Seems odd to me.

    It looks like a bug. I'll have someone look into it.

  • Could not load the Bigger Tiles Modules

    I use Photoshop CS5 on iMac 3.06GHz IC2D with Lion 10.7.2. When I start Photoshop a Popup says : Could not load the Bigger Tiles Modules because it does not work with this version of Photoshop. Pity, but how to disable this Popup at every start ?

    Sure... I hope this helps and this is what you mean.  It is the case that I installed it fresh on a new machine, but maybe I checked a wrong box along the way.  I certainly have no reason to deny installing it any other way.  Regardless, it was only a slight annoyance and such an easy fix.
