Full GC causing application pauses

We have a J2EE application that has been giving us some problems. When the application first starts up it runs fine. Over time we start seeing pauses in the application that seem to be caused by garbage collection pausing the application. We see GC log statements like the following:
[Full GC[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor109]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor108]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor101]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor105]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor103]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor110]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor104]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor102]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor107]
[Unloading class sun.reflect.GeneratedSerializationConstructorAccessor106]
457267K->266956K(510336K), 3.5484916 secs]
Sometimes the unloading class info is displayed, sometimes it is just the Full GC statment.
We are running WAS 5.1, IBM (Sun) 1.4.1
The app contains EJBs (session, entity and MDB) as well as a JCA adapter for communication with an outside vendor (TCP/IP Sockets)
The app has 500MB allocated for memory. That seems like a lot of memory for this application. Is there anything that could be causing the pauses to increase in frequency and tme? I've checked through the code for hashmap and arraylist handling to make sure we were not holding on to objects once placed into the sets.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

There are another options:
1) Buy more memory for your server (it is cheap right?). Larger heap - less GC pause.
2) Update your JVM. Tiger has much better scalability and ergonomics.
3) Setup permgen size.

I had to replace the corrupted hard drive in my macbook pro recently, and after I did so I did a full factory software & application restore.  I had to rebuild my iTunes Library by dragging my music folders in my iTunes Media into the iTunes Application and rebuild my playlists manually.  After plugging my iPhone 5 into the computer USB, it immediately recognized my iPhone 5, showing: last backups, space left on my iPhone & all options available.  I then checked the box to manually manage music etc.  The problem I am now having is that when I actually try to drag music from my iTunes to my phone a prompt comes up saying that my iPhone is not an authorized device.  What should I do?  Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    jrmetzger,
iOS runs on iPads and iPhones; OS X runs on Macs.
Given your situation, I’d highly recommended that you purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter, so that you can test both your old disk and your new disk externally, since it might be that the problem is due to a faulty internal SATA cable rather than due to faulty disks.

  • Mounted Drives Cause Applications to Hang on Connection Change

When I change from wired to wireless connection to my network (or vice versa) mounted volumes seem to cause applications using those volumes to hang. This happens when going from wired to wireless, or vice versa, and happens regardless of the path (wired + wireless -> wired; wireless -> nothing -> wireless; wireless -> wired, etc.). Affected applications do not recover until the original connection is restored. Un-mounting all Volumes before switching prevents this problem. This problem causes the Finder to hang if an unmount or browse of a mounted volume is attempted after the switch.
(All volumes are on the same network on the same workgroup as the affected Mac. Wireless is via an AirPort Express connected to the same router as the Mac.)
    MacBook Pro (15.4"- 2.33GHz - 3 GB - 160 GB)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   (Macintosh 128k, long ago)

Well, maybe Windows has a hook to explicitly "turn off" a network interface, which shuts down the TCP connections; and maybe OS X doesn't have this.
It should be "a long time" (on the order of 10 minutes), not forever.
I think that unmounting prior to the switch is the only way to prevent this. If there is another way, it probably involves using ifconfig in Terminal to force the old interface down (which might explicitly tell TCP to give up on the old connections).

    Danny,
Do you have all RPMs installed on the target node?
Is the issue with this script only?
What is the target OS version?

  • LaunchPad full of junk applications

Installed Lion - all great appart from launchpad. It is full of junk applications, like installers, support apps etc and all the parallels windows apps (Why?).
Any one know how to stop LauchPad showing all the junk apps or maybe a way to hide apps?

If you're looking for Folders in Folders then you're not grasping the metaphor used in Launchpad. It's about buttons, not folders. In truth - as more than one reviewer has pointed out - LaunchPad is of little value to experienced users who already have a Launching system in place. It's geared for the less experienced user.

Can i download java for my ipad, the problem is i open glovis.usgs from my ipad, but i can't see the full page, cause the page need a java...help me please

Nope. The iPad (and iPhone and iPod touch) cannot execute Java applets. It's a limitation in iOS from the beginning (just like lack of Flash). You will either need to use a desktop computer or access a desktop computer via RDP or VNC to access that page on iPad.mIn short: there is no native way to use a Java applet on iOS.

  • Fsmailserver: memory full. Close applications and ...

    Hi,
    I am using 4 e-mail accounts:
Three imap accounts for which i am syncing e-mail every 15 minutes
One Mail for Exchange account i am syncing google calendar with
After a while (sometimes already after a few hours, sometimes after a few days) i get the error message “fsmailserver: memory full. Close applications and try again”. This happens whenever new mail gets in and whenever i am sending a new e-mail.
This N8, however, has plenty of memory left! When i close all running applications via the task menu and i also close the e-mail application, then restart the e-mail application, the error message is still issued. It also doesn’t ring the normal new-email sound anymore, but gives two short error clicks.
Very annoying because now i am not even notified of new e-mail any more when this happens. So that makes the N8 very unreliable for e-mail, which is one of the main aspects of a smart phone anyway!
I can only fix the error by switching the N8 off and on again.... But after a while it will happen again!

  • Running out of "Disk Space" causing applications to terminally pause

The last month or two I have started getting this problem - after running a couple of apps on my Imac they freeze and soon a message comes up saying You have no more diskspace for applications. I stress this is a suddenly new problem I never used to have running these apps (most usually Logic, Waveburner, Phoenix Viewer, Safari, Yahoo messanger or Firefox). I am on an Imac with 2.8 GHz processor, OSX 10.6.8, 2GB RAM and about 290 GHz free space on my hard disk. I wonder if anyone can show me how to monitor where all the memory is being used up and suggest a solution?

Would definately consider Increasing the RAM... These days 2GB is a minimum...

  • Crystal Reports Causes Application to Hang in crpe32.dll When Viewing Report

    All,
We have a C# Winform Application that uses Crystal Reports 13.0.9.  In production, our application is intermittently hanging. The crash dump analysis indicates that a Crystal Reports assembly is causing blocked threads (i.e. deadlock).  The results of crash dump analysis from two different workstations and diagnostic information about one of the affected machines is included below.
When this error occurs, the users are simply trying to view the report.  The database is SQL Server 2012 Express but, the report does not pull data from the database.  Rather, data is pushed to the report via DataSet and Adapter.  The Crystal Runtime is physically installed on the machine (i.e. they are not using a report server).  Unfortunately, our QA and development teams are unable to reproduce this issue in their respective environments.  We have many other users of this application and version of Crystal Reports.  And, this seems to be the only isolated case where the application hangs on the Crystal DLLs.
Can someone please provide advice and/or feedback on how to interpret and/or further analyze the information in the dump analysis for troubleshooting purposes.  I apologize for putting the dump analysis and diagnostic information in a code block but, it was the only way I could post the information without errors.

    Hi Aaaron
    This will be one of those; "works here, not there, what's the diff?". E.g.;
    OS?
    Load?
Runtime - CR, DB clinet, VC++ and other.
    Printer drivers(?)
If this is a 32 bit app, use the Modules utility to compare the runtime on a working computer and one that does not work. When doing the comparisons, look at the CR runtime, the db runtime, the VC++ runtime and any other runtime differences.
Since you are using MS SQL 2012, ensure that the SQL Native 11 client is installed.
Re. printer drivers, check to see that you are using the latest updates for what ever printer is default or used by the reports. Also, make sure the printer driver is designed for the OS.
Oh. One more thing. You can attach files here; just click on the "Use advanced editor" link. You will have to rename the file to .txt, then attach. Just sayin - that way you don't have to copy paste

For about a week now, every 2 minutes all of my desktop icons will disappear and then reappear. If I have a folder open, such as the Pictures folder, it will close during this process.
If I am using Firefox or Safari or Photoshop, when the desktop items disappear, so does my mouse's ability to function on the application. I have to click on the application again for the mouse to function on it.
Today I was attempting to burn files to a DVD, but it fails because of this "refreshing" or whatever you call this symptom. Last night my computer did appear to do its weekly backup, (it said it was successful) but I wanted to copy files onto a DVD just in case.
Can someone give me some direction on how to troubleshoot this? In beginner terms? I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
P.S. The only new things that happened recently that I can think of was that I did a software upgrade (think it was Quicktime...) and downloaded a Wordpress Theme.

Sometimes, starting up in SafeBoot (shift key held after start tone, login window appears
and semi-normal desktop Finder appears; but this is in a reduced function mode) and a
'repair disk permissions' in Disk Utility of the computer's volume on the Mac HD may help.
And after that, or any other minor repairs done in SafeBoot, the computer gets a normal
restart so the rest of the OS will be up and running. If that does not help, there are other
things one may try and do to help it. The matter involves some troubleshooting and a
cause and effect approach is sometimes taken; or on other occasions, a user may try a
long laundry-list of things and hope some issue just goes away; if one or another thing
happens to work. In this instance, learning of a specific issue's cure may not result.
Some items causing a problem, such as those cited above, may be dealt with while
the computer is started up in SafeBoot mode; since extensions and other parts of
such things may be turned off. So, some items like Stuffit can be removed when
they are disabled in SafeBoot. Be sure to run 'repair disk permissions' before and
after software updates, since for some reason this appears to help the system.
Sometimes, just basic system maintenance such as repair disk permissions, running
time/date cron-like routines (see AppleJack download, or OnyX in automation) can
resolve issues that may otherwise involve knowing more about how the system works.
These kinds of tools, free to download and try, can save a bit of trouble; some of that
is preventive in that the routines can be done per schedule to keep the system well.
The bootable installer system disc can be helpful, since there are optional tools in the
Disk Utility on that disc's boot volume; ahead of actually running the Installer itself. A
menu bar appears in the first full Installer window with drop down menus in it, and of
these a few options appear. And in the Disk Utility, chosen from the Installer menu,
there are a variety of tools which can totally obliterate or attempt a repair to the HDD.
An 'archive & install' and then update the resulting new system to the latest version
    of OS X including security update, java, quicktime, safari, and other parts would follow;
in some cases, perhaps extreme, this is one way to resolve system software issue.
There are others, but this is among the last but not least. Further study is recommended
before going the A&I plus update the new system folder route; depending on what else
is going on in the system as it exists now. If this archive & install is performed, be sure
the checkbox to save user account info is marked, so the new system will retain this...
    In any event...
    Good Luck & happy computing!

  • AIR installer causes application crash

    Hi all,
I'm developing an AIR 2.0 application and it appears that the AIR installer is causing an application crash. Here's what the person who is experiencing the crash is reporting:
I installed the software per instructions. However, when I attempt to launch Eye-Fi Center the Adobe Air License Agreement window is displayed. I click the "I agree" button and at that point, both the Adobe Air License Agreement window and the Eye-Fi Center app silently quit. No error messages are displayed.
    and here's the crash report:

  • Crystal Report Causes Application Pool Hang

I have a .Net application deployed to a webserver. The application runs on a dedicated application pool. Crystal Reports XI Release 2 is used to show reports. On a daily basis the application pool becomes hung and needs to be recycled. Upon doing a dump of the hung proccess and analisys of the dump file the following suggestion was shown by the diagnostic tool.
The following threads in w3wp.exe__AppPool #1__PID__28356__Date__05_18_2009__Time_08_42_55AM__711__Manual Dump.dmp are loading C:\Program Files\Business Objects\BusinessObjects Enterprise 11.5\win32_x86\secSSO.dll using the API LoadLibrary. The call to LoadLibrary originated originated from cxlibw_3_1!CXLib301::CSharedLibrary::LoadLibraryHelper+2c
    ( 11 )
    1.01% of threads blocked
Constant calls to LoadLibrary and FreeLibrary can have a serious impact on application performance since the Windows NT Loader takes a global lock while performing this operation causing serialization.
Please follow up with vendor Business Objects for problem resolution concerning the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cxlibw-3-1.dll.
    Please advise.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cxlibw-3-1.dll.
renaming this dll caused crystal reports to no longer work.
    it gave this error:

It definetly seems that you need that dll to show the report.
There was another dll there called  C:\WINDOWS\system32\cxlib-3-1.dll renaming that one seems to not do anything.
