Fully qualified database object names

Is there a method to determine the fully qualified name of a database object such as a table or procedure? At the moment I compute this from the catalog and schema identifiers but I am hoping there is a more direct way.
Thanks,
KP

give an example for what u r looking for.
which DB ?For example, a Sybase table named "table1" in a schema "dbo" in database "db1" has a fully qualified name of "db1.dbo.table1". I am trying to find a way to do this in a database-independent way. It's not as simple as concatenating the 3 elements together because you have to take into consideration the fact that the database may not use schemas or databases or both etc. I am hoping there is a method or a series of methods that return this information.

    Hi all,
    Can anyone tell me what is maximum length of oracle database objects name .
    I guess it is 30 ,correct me if i am wrong thank you.
    regards,
    P Prakash

    Some objects (like synonyms or java classes) can have longer names than 30 chars:
    SQL> create or replace synonym empempempempempempempempempempempempemp for emp
    Synonym created.though internally oracle will generate short names for such objects:
    SQL> select synonym_name from user_synonyms where synonym_name like '%EMPEMPEM%'
    SYNONYM_NAME
    /969ea190_EMPEMPEMPEMPEMPEMPEM
    1 row selected.and not always will the long name be actually usable:
    SQL> select * from empempempempempempempempempempempempemp
    Error at line 1

  • Validation of database object names

    Hello. I need a function that can check whether a given string is a valid database object name. For example:
    IsValid('col1') -> Yes
    IsValid('col 1') -> No
    IsValid('1col') -> No
    Is there any build in the Oracle or does anyone have such an UDF?
    Thank is advance.

    You can use the wildly inappropriately named comma_to_table procedure. It checks the name and generates an exception if it is not valid.
    SQL> var s varchar2(30)
    SQL> exec :s := 'col1'
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> declare
      2    u dbms_utility.uncl_array;
      3    n pls_integer;
      4  begin
      5    dbms_utility.comma_to_table(:s,n,u);
      6    dbms_output.put_line ('Valid:   ' || :s);
      7  exception
      8    when others then
      9      dbms_output.put_line ('Invalid: ' || :s);
    10  end;
    11  /
    Valid:   col1
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> exec :s := '1col'
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> /
    Invalid: 1col
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> exec :s := 'test'
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> /
    Valid:   test
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> exec :s := 'test@'
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

  • Retrieve all source database object names from an application in APEX 4.0

    Hello
    I have completed an application developed in APEX 4.0 ( @Oracle 10g database ).
    Now we need to migrate the scripts including all database objects that support the application from Schema A to Schema B.
    Is there a report I can run to provide me the information like this :
    Page number, Name of the database object used ( including table, view and sequence )
    This would allow me to examine each database object used in Schema A and make sure the same object and data have been copied to Schema B without missing anything.
    Thanks
    Susanna

    Hi,
    On APEX 4.1 there is Database Object Dependencies Report
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23903_01/doc/doc.41/e21674/bldr_app_rpt.htm#CEGGAICH
    I'm not sure is this feature in APEX 4.0

  • Database Object names

    just curious, since we all know objects names longer then 30 characters are never needed and even more, it is risky and bad to allow it, when oracle will change mysql object names and cut it to 30 characters ?

    Ikrischer wrote:
    Actually, we don't all know it. There was quite a lively discussion here some time back, started by someone who tried to make the case for going the other way .. change oracle to allow even longer object names. that was me, I tried to be ironic in this post since oracle company now got a dbms with obejct names longer then the magic and holy border of 30 characters.
    Then you need to get a life. Look at everything that is going on in the world and ask yourself where this non-problem rates on the scale. The first time you brought it up I chalked it up to an intellectual discussion, even if somewhat pointless and obtuse. To bring it up again tells more about you than it does about Oracle.
    Not in our lifetime the real question is, if mysql is working well with names longer then 30 characters, why oracle has a problem with it ?

  • Oracle database object name 30 characters  limit

    Hi,
    I'm working with Oracle since version 8 and I know about this restriction. I was hopping that this will be eliminated in the future, but I saw that in Oracle 11i the same restriction exists.
    Does anyone know if it will be eliminated in a future release?
    I would like to know if there is a reason why this limitation exists. We are currently developing an JPA application and we have tables that have name with more than 30 characters.
    Thanks!

    because all table/index names must be stored in the data dictionary and that storage is only allocated for 30 characters

    Not only this tag but also some other Struts tag dont mention the fully quilied class name . why ? does request.setAttribute() inside the servlet plays any role here ? or whats the reason why Struts dont use fully qualified class name in define :bean or logic:equal tag ?
    P.S : i remember jsp Usebean Id tag uses fully qualified class name whenevr it usues that .

    That tutorail should all gibberish in my browser. But anyway, hope this helps!
    The tutorial has only code snippets and the code written there isn't complete.
    To use that bean class name directly, there has to be an import statement in the JSP which will specify the fully qualified class name.
    I didn't quite get what you are trying to say about the tld's.
    That code snippet is returning a member variable called "map" which is an instance of the java.util.Map. The tutorial hasn't specified the member variables in the code snippet.
    few days ago i posted this Map..someone (sensei )

    Basically, your machine will need a "fully qualified hostname" e.g. myhostname.mydomain.com, only myhostname is not enough.
    Also, AS does not allow the IP to change after install e.g. no DHCP (dynamically allocated IP) allowed!

    Sorry, I should have mentioned that the cmdlets I'm using are part of the Active Directory module. You'll need to install the RSAT (Win7+) to use them.
    If you'd rather stick with your DirectorySearcher methods instead of moving to the AD module, you can adjust your output by using something like this instead:
    if(($user.UserFlags.Value -band $ADS_UF_LOCKOUT) -eq $ADS_UF_LOCKOUT) {
    "$domainname\$($objResult.Properties.samaccountname)"
    $domainname might not be what you're expecting, just FYI.
    As for filtering, you can add to the if statement and check for your known usernames only.

  • Fully qualify domain name in CMS_IdNumbers5

    Under CMS D/B, there is a table called u2018CMS_IdNumbers5u2019.
    One of the fields generated during the creation of CMS D/B is always equal to the server name where BOE is installed.
         E.g      If Server Name = Server01
              There will be a field called u2018Server01u2019 under table CMS_IdNumbers5
    In Unix (AIX) environment, it will retrieve the fully qualify domain name and port numbers
         E.g.      If Server Name = Server01.AU.SVR.COM
              Port = 6400
              There will be a field called Server01.AU.SVR.COM:6400 under table CMS_IdNumbers5.
    Questions:
    Where does the fully qualify domain name get pick up from in unix and how does it knows it should point to AU.SVR.COM in the above example?
    Never once have we stated the fully qualify domain name (.AU.SVR.COM) during the creation of CMS D/B (via cmsdbsetup.sh), we only specified u2018Server01u2019.
    When using u2018uname u2013nu2019 or u2018hostnameu2019 commands, it will only return back u2018Server01u2019.
    Client needs to point to a different domain name.
    E.g. Instead of Server01.AU.SVR.COM, they want Server01.AU2.SVR.COM
    Where can this be done?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Ken

    Thanks for the quick respond. Yes I am aware changing domain is out of scope from Business Objects perspective.
    My question is more on how and where do the fully qualify domain name get picked up from in unix (AIX). As mentioned in previous note, never once have we stated the fully qualify domain name (.AU.SVR.COM) during the creation of CMS D/B (via cmsdbsetup.sh), we only specified u2018Server01u2019. Yet it was able to determine the fully qualify domain name.

  • Fun with fully-qualified class names

    In Java, AFAIK, there are three forms of fully-qualified class names:
    1) the name you get from Class.getName(), e.g. java.lang.String
    2) the name that the VM spec defines as appropriate for (e.g.) constant pool info, e.g. java/lang/String
    3) the type name as we see it in bytecode viewers, or in JNI signatures, e.g. Ljava/lang/String;
    Here's where it gets fun. I work in CA's Wily division, where we do bytecode instrumentation for app performance management. That is, our code needs to actually insert data into constant pools, and (for obvious reasons, like avoiding VerifyErrors) that data needs to follow type specifications exactly. For the above String example, that works just fine, exactly as specified in the JVMSpec, for JVMs up to 1.5. In 1.6, however, the JNI-ish format is also accepted, that is, I can use Ljava/lang/String; in the constant pool.
    Curious.
    It gets better. For String[] arrays, I don't know what the "specified" format is -- the JVMSpec is silent on the subject of arrays. I do know that I CANNOT use java/lang/String[], but for 1.5 and 1,6, I CAN use [Ljava/lang/String; -- an apparent contradiction.
    Any VM expert wanna chime in on the subject?  What IS the proper format for array types in the constant pool, and why does 1.6 tolerate a seemingly-improper format for scalar Objects?

    The -link and -linkoffline options enable the documents to link to other API documentation
    generated in separate runs of javadoc. Linkoffline is usually the one you want.
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/tooldocs/win32/javadoc.html#linkoffline
    With 1.4.0, you can also choose to omit the package name even if -link or -linkoffline

  • SharePoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010, Packaging a solution - The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

    Hi,
    I have a solution that used to contain one SharePoint 2010 project. The project is named along the following lines:
    <Company>.<Product>.SharePoint - let's call it Project1 for future reference. It contains a number of features which have been named according
    to their purpose, some are reasonably long and the paths fairly deep. As far as I am concerned we are using sensible namespaces and these reflect our company policy of "doing things properly".
    I first encountered the following error message when packaging the aforementioned SharePoint project into a wsp:
    "The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters."
    I went through a great deal of pain in trying to rename the project, shorten feature names and namespaces etc... until I got it working. I then went about gradually
    renaming everything until eventually I had what I started with, and it all worked. So I was none the wiser...not ideal, but I needed to get on and had tight delivery timelines.
    Recently we wanted to add another SharePoint project so that we could move some of our core functinality out into a separate SharePoint solution - e.g. custom workflow
    error logging. So we created another project in Visual Studio called:
    <Company>.<Product>.SharePoint.<Subsystem> - let's call it Project2 for future reference
    And this is when the error has come back and bitten me! The scenario is now as follows:
    1. project1 packages and deploys successfully with long feature names and deep paths.
    2. project2 does not package and has no features in it at all. The project2 name is 13 characters longer than project1
    I am convinced this is a bug with Visual Studio and/or the Package MSBuild target. Why? Let me explain my findings so far:
    1. By doing the following I can get project2 to package
    In Visual Studio 2010 show all files of project2, delete the obj, bin, pkg, pkgobj folders.
    Clean the solution
    Shut down Visual Studio 2010
    Open Visual Studio 2010
    Rebuild the solution
    Package the project2
    et voila the package is generated!
    This demonstrates that the package error message is in fact inaccurate and that it can create the package, it just needs a little help, since Visual Studio seems to
    no longer be hanging onto something.
    Clearly this is fine for a small time project, but try doing this in an environment where we use Continuous Integration, Unit Testing and automatic deployment of SharePoint
    solutions on a Build Server using automated builds.
    2. I have created another project3 which has a ludicrously long name, this packages fine and also has no features contained within it.
    3. I have looked at the length of the path under the pkg folder for project1 and it is large in comparison to the one that is generated for project2, that is when it
    does successfully package using the method outlined in 1. above. This is strange since project1 packages and project2 does not.
    4. If I attempt to add project2 to my command line build using MSBuild then it fails to package and when I then open up Visual Studio and attempt to package project2
    from the Visual Studio UI then it fails with the path too long error message, until I go through the steps outlined in 1. above to get it to package.
    5. DebugView shows nothing useful during the build and packaging of the project.
    6. The error seems to occur in
    CreateSharePointProjectService target called at line 365 of
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.SharePoint.targetsCurrently I am at a loss to work out why this is happening? My next task is to delete
    project2 completely and recreate it and introduce it into my Visual Studio solution.
    Microsoft, can you confirm whether this is a known issue and whether others have encountered this issue? Is it resolved in a hotfix?
    Anybody else, can you confirm whether you have come up with a solution to this issue? When I mean a solution I mean one that does not mean that I have to rename my namespaces,
    project etc... and is actually workable in a meaningful Visual Studio solution.

    Hi
    Yes, I thought I had fixed this my moving my solution from the usual documents  to
    c:\v2010\projectsOverflow\DetailedProjectTimeline
    This builds ok, but when I come to package I get the lovely error:
    Error 2 The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters. C:\VS2010\ProjectsOverflow\DetailedProjectTimeline\VisualDetailedProjectTimelineWebPart\Features\Feature1\Feature1.feature VisualDetailedProjectTimeline
    Now, the error seems to be related to
    Can anyone suggest what might be causing this. Probably some path in an XML file somewhere. Here is my prime suspect!
    <metaData>
    <type name="VisualDetailedProjectTimelineWebPart.VisualProjectTimelineWebPart.VisualProjectTimeline, $SharePoint.Project.AssemblyFullName$" />
    <importErrorMessage>$Resources:core,ImportErrorMessage;</importErrorMessage>
    </metaData>
    <data>
    <properties>
    <property name="Title" type="string">VisualProjectTimelineWebPart</property>
    <property name="Description" type="string">My Visual WebPart</property>
    </properties>
    </data>
    </webPart>
    </webParts>
    .... Unless I can solve this I will have to remove the project and recreate but with simple paths. Tho I will be none the wiser if I come across this again.

    Hi AltafB,
    For your situation, you can short the path for the source code. Or use a short path for build agent folder in your build definition. You can refer to the links below to solve your problem:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/aaronhallberg/archive/2007/06/20/team-build-and-260-character-paths.aspx

    Besides, since you deploy Orchard to Azure, you can also publish it directly using publish profile in Visual Stduio or WebMatrix directly.

    Do you have DNS running on the net and configured right? Run "ipconfig" in a Windows XP command line to see if the DNS suffix is set. Another trick is to run "nslookup" in the command line and look up your system's IP address (wehich ipconfig will tell you.) If that doesn't get you a DNS name for the system, you need to fix that in the network connections dialogs.
