Sjsas 80 (j2sdk 1.4) and sym links under Linux
iH:
I have a WAR deployed, which includes a download directory. I would like to sym link a directory within the download directory to another path on the disk.
I can view the link in the page that SJSAS generates when I browse the directory, but I can't follow the link with the browser. Help?
Under Apache I would add the FollowSymLinks option ......You can do it by sharing the target directory with Samba and then mounting the Samba share using smbmount or mount.
I shared the target directory by editing smb.conf, and then I ran the following:
cd <dir-where-you-want-symlink>
mkdir <symlink-name>
mount -t smbfs -o username=<user>,password=<password> //<server>/<share> <dir-where-you-want-symlink>/<symlink-name>
The directory then looks 'real' enough for SJSAS to follow it.

Is it legal to use NiModbus under linux?
Hi,
situation is: National Instruments provides the Instaler for NiModbus Library only for Windows-OS... but the Library itselv also runs on Linux-OS. So the Question is: Is it legal to copy the ni.modbusllb out of an installation on Windows-OS and use it under Linux-OS...

Yes it is. NIMODBUS.LLB to the best of my understandings is a free download from NI for any legal user of LabVIEW. That they provide a Windows only installer is sort of neglectance of NI, of the fact that there are other platform users than Windows only. Why there needs to be an installer I'm not even sure. the library should be basically self contained and I think it is not to much asked of an average LabVIEW programmer to know how to copy an LLB into the instr.lib subdirectory. But apparently someone at NI thought that there should be an installer for such a trivial task and in the process of it forgot that there are other platforms LabVIEW is running on. (Or they think only Windows users are not smart enough to be able to copy a file themselves )

Equium M70 - Bios UPDATE under Linux
Hi,
I will update my BIOS(Equium M70 psm78e) but the only file i can use is a .exe application which try to flash the bios while the system is working and, of course, under linux don't work!
Anyone knows another method?
Thanks a lot
CiaoCiao
Dex… which is foolish on Toshiba's part, IMO.
Failing something Linux-specific, I'd settle for a BIOS upgrader which works in FreeDOS. That's doable, if it's provided as a complete CD image or (for some of us) can be added to an existing FreeDOS CD image.
This BIOS upgradability issue is something of an anti-recommendation, though it does have to be weighed against Linux-friendly hardware and a resident BIOS which causes no problems for Linux. (My Equium scores well on the latter two but unfortunately also on the first due to my having removed a certain commercial OS from its HD, despite which it +did+ get one BIOS upgrade.) -
Analog Triggering and Interrupt generation on the PCIe-6320 under Linux
We would like to use the analog triggering functions of the PCIe-6320 under Linux to time tag external events.
I have no experience with the MH DDK but have been told this is what we would need to implement the functions we want. We plan on using Fedora Linux and we are targetting kernel 2.6.31 with the PREEMPT_RT patch applied. We may consider slightly more recent kernel versions. The PREEMPT_RT patch is used to greatly improve determinism in the system and get real-time responses to some external events.
Here is what we wish to do in more details:
We wish to route at least two analog inputs to the comparator, then route the output of the comparator to a digital input which in turn would create a PCIe interrupt. The interrupt software handler would than time tag that event for our application purposes. We need the comparator threshold to be software programmable in level and slope. We are also interested in using the Watchdog Timer feature of the board.
Our application is written in C/C++.
Would the above be feasible? Please provide comments and instructions how we should address our requirement.
Thanks!Patof wrote:
I am not familiar with the MHDDK. I would like to have an idea of the effort required to implement the functions I have described using MHDDK on Linux. Like I mentionned, we plan on using Linux kernel 2.6.31 with the PREEMPT_RT patch. Could you provide comments on that matter? I need to evaluate the amount of time I will need to spend to deploy and use MHDDK for the PCIe-6320.
There are two factors to consider when writing a driver for your specific application:
Using the deterministic kernel API calls
Writing to the device registers to
Control the watchdog timer
Configure the analog comparator
Manage the analog subsystem state as trigger events occur
Handle device interrupts
The MHDDK for X Series offers the following behavior out-of-the-tarball:
A Linux kernel module using the standanrd kernel and PCI subsystem calls
Mapping device registers to user-mode for access
Demonstrating/documenting how to
Control the watchdog timer (dioex6.cpp)
Manage the analog subsystem state as trigger events occur (aiex2.cpp, aiex4.cpp)
Handle device interrupts (reference manual only)
There are two notably missing pieces and one item to consider:
Missing: deterministic kernel API calls. If you decide to use the nirlpk module, you would need to change it from the standard interfaces to the deterministic variants.
Missing: configuring the analog comparator. You will need to implement this with additional insight from this discussion board.
Consider: if your application requires device access from kernel-mode only, you would not be able to use the MHDDK's C++ classes that perform device programming but would need to implement register programming in C.
To estimate the time for these three, here are my recommendations:
Review the nirlpk.c source file to understand how device access and DMA buffers are implemented and mapped to the user-mode application.
Beware that operation-specific programming help (as you would need for analog triggering) typically requires two weeks for a complete response.
Review the ChipObjects in the MHDDK distribution to understand how register addresses, widths, and bit fields affect device programming.

Shell script to start, stop and restart a JAR under linux
Hi everyone,
Does anyone have idea to write a shell script to start, stop and restart a JAR under linux? it can also indicate a method or parameter? Thanks!
this JAR inculdes a class with main method like this:
public class Client(){
public Client(String name){
public void stopClient(){
public static void main(String[] args){
new Client("/tmp/text.log");
}Does anyone have idea to write a shell script to
start, stop and restart a JAR under linux? That part isn't really clear.
Start would be java -jar myjar.jar.
Stop could either be kill, which kills the whole process; kill -TSTP, which suspends the process, or some application-specific communication such as sending something over a port; or putting something into a file or something.
Restart could just be the same as start (if stop is just kill); kill -CONT, if stop was kill -TSTP; or some other app-specific communication. -
Different behaviour of file vis under linux and microsoft
I am porting software written under Windows labview to Linux Labview (6.1). When using the Open/Create/Replace vi in windows if I use a pattern of "*.abc" and enter "123" in the dialogue box a file called "123.abc" will be created which is what I would expect. The same operation under Linux will create a file called "123" without the extension. Is this normal and is there a way of making the linux version behave in the same way as the windows version?
Sorry about the delay - vacation.
There appears to be no check box under Linux to use native file dialogs although it does indeed exist under windows. In fact the linux version does use linux file dialogs by default. It seems that the only options are to force the windows version to behave like the the linux version - which is counter intuitive, or write a new file dialog vi for linux. -

I don't know why, but when I select a folder with multiple docs contained within it, or multiple files, the Compress option is grayed out under the File menu, nor is it available when I right-click. Please help.
Yes it is, but I have the same problem of the option does not appear with "right click" (I'm actually control-clicking), and COMPRESS is grayed out under the file menu. I'd like to fix it.
Hmm. After finding the Archive Utility,* I tried archiving the folder. It came out as .cpgz, ugh. Found there was a preference to make .zip the default. It worked!
And now…the menus are not grayed out. ?!?! OK.'
Hope this helps someone.
*You cannot find this via search, apparently it is a hidden file, you have to click from the root drive through to /System/Library/CoreServices (Thanks for the file path Alberto!) -
Opening a Powerpoint in JSP and run under Linux
Hi,
I need to have a JSP page that provides a link to open a powerpoint file and this JSP is to be run under Linux. When I try to click on the link in Linux to open the powerpoint, it gives me a lot of junk characters. Can somebody please help mi, thanks a million! You have the mimetype for the HTTP response set to something other than what will make the browser start a powerpoint viewer and direct the content of the HTTP response to it.
In your jsp use the setHeader(String key,String key) method to set the value of "Content-Type" to the mimetype for powerpoint.
Of course the users must have browsers that are configured to launch a powerpoint viewer or plug-in. If you provide the correct mimetype and peoples browsers desn't have this, then they will get the "save to file" dialog box. -
Developing Java under Linux and Windows

Hi,
I have a program that works under both windows and linux. I wanted to know what is the best way for the file paths I use.
What is the difference between using "/" and "java.io.File.separator"?
Any more info/tips on the difference between working under windows and linux will be great. I tried searching for it online but couldn't find anything useful.
Thanks,

I thought that if you used a '/' in a path string it was interpreted correctly, even in Windoze.Other platforms are available :-)
I can't recall the details now, but we had an inexplicably-breaking build on Windows earlier this year for code that was fine under Linux, and tracked it back to the use of "/" rather than File.separator. It was an odd corner case which escapes me, but a lesson learnt nonetheless -
Using cinepak codec and JMF under linux mandrake
Hello,
I have a big problem using JMF under linux to read video files encoded with the Cinepak codec.
I don't know if i'm the only one in this situation, so if you are too please let me know :)
I tested my project under both windows and linux. Under Windows, no problem : the cinepak encoded file is read perfectly. Under linux, it doesn't work. Even if i try to read it with JMStudio. So i think it may be a problem of codec under linux, but it isn't because i can read the video file with a linux video player.
I don't know what to do and it's very important for my project that i can read cinepak under linux.
Thanks in advance for any help
Alexwell, your not the only one.
I have it working in Debian, and JDS.(JMF is setup automatically in JDS).(2.6.6 kernel)
I looked at the installation structure of JDS, and was able to duplicate what they did for Debian.
Maybe it will work for Mandrake two??
ok, all you have to do is copy or create soft links from your Mozilla directory, just like you did with the java plugin, and link to all the *.so files in JMF-2.1.1e/lib directory.
Should work.
I also read that not haveing the native files only matters if you are doing Capture. not play.
to get your ATI All-in-Wonder 128 to work, make sure you install the correct driver, and have it working under linux, then try it in JMSTUDIO
