Gap in logs are too far to recover.  Need to start over I think.

Hello,
I have a dataguard setup and due to several circumstances the connection was lost to the standby and the archivelogs are gone for as far back as needed.
I want to double check that this is the best method to get synched up again. On primary I am running rman backups every night. Here is my config....
Oracle 10.2.0.5 (64 bit)
Red Hat 5 enterprise 64 bit.

So can I just copy over my flash_recovery_area to the standby FRA, restore database, recover database? Then set my log_archive_dest_2 on the primary and ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT; on the standby?
I did not set this up initially and I see a couple issues I need to address on the standby
db_recovery_file_dest string /u01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area
standby_archive_dest string /u04/flash_recovery_area
Here is primary
db_recovery_file_dest string /u04/flash_recovery_area
What I'm not sure of is which one of these I need to switch on the standby or in RMAN on the standby. RMAN is going to look for the backup in the location set by db_recovery_file_dest on the standby for the files to recover. I don't have room on that drive so can I just simply change on standby db_recovery_file_dest = '/u04/flash_recovery_area' for the recovery then set it back when it's finished?
Thanks

Hello again;

I just want to be clear that in *.log_archive_dest_2='SERVICE=BCSTDBY_40 I put the tnsnames.ora entry of the server I want to connect to not the instance name?Correct. The is the TNSNAMES.ORA entry.
Important
The way I show it you need to set DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST too.
Example
db_recovery_file_dest='/u04/flash_recovery_area'
If the standby site's FRA is different you need to account for that.
Once you get it going keep this query ( I would run once a day )

  • Detail lines are too far apart

    I have an Oracle Report where the detail lines are too far apart. There is way too much white space between the lines. How do I decrease the line height? The detail line is very complex, with fields which are shown/not shown at different times.
    Thanks, Wayne

    Hi,
    try to set the vertically property of the appropriate frame to variable (so that the frame can shrink) and have a look at the first item inside the repeating frame. The difference between this item and the repeating frame is used for every line.

  • The entries in the Fields column are too far apart.

    The Fields column on the left has the entries really far apart, so when I need to arrange the field order I have to do a lot of scrolling up and down. The arrow you click to expand or collapse the list is super magnified, though it still functions. It hasn't always been this way, but I must've done something to cause this change. How can I reverse this? Thanks.

    I am having the same problem. It seemed to start after updating to 9.5.1. Adobe support will not address this question as they are not supporting this version anymore! ARGH! If anyone knows how to fix, please share!!

  • Bookmarks are too far down the screen

    I synced my Safari 1.x bookmarks to .Mac this morning and when I pull them up at work on IE, they are all there however there is a big space at the top and I need to scroll all of the way down to see them. This happens each time. Any ideas what is causing this?
    Thanks!
    Eric

    Double Tap the Screen with 3 Fingers...
    Then go to Settings > General > Accessibility and make sure Zoom is turned Off.
    That should fix it...

  • IOS apps are too cheap. Apple needs to help make app dev more sustainable

    First let me say that I am a user, not a dev (at least not an app dev).
    According to
    http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/18/paid-apps-on-the-decline-90-of-ios-apps-are-fre e-up-from-80-84-during-2010-2012-says-flurry/
    90% of apps on app store are free. Avg price for iPad app is 50c, for iPhone app is 19c. The situation is even worse for android. Something ridiculous like 6c.
    It's a wonder anyone is still in business. This doesn't seem sustainable, unless you have a hit or you target a professional/enthusiast niche, how do you make money.  There can't be that much money in ads.
    We have a race to the bottom and users have gotten used to the idea that everything should be free or nearly free.
    I am guilty of this myself. I'll pick the free app with ads  if given a choice, and may upgrade if the ads get too annoying and i use the app often.
    I'll usually pay one or two dollars without thinking much. Four or  five  dollars and i have to think a bit. above five I have to think hard.
    There are a couple of things Apple can do to improve the situation for everyone.
    1) create a built in trial system.  Have a Try it button. After the user has used ithe app X amt of time iOS will ask if they want to buy. Yes, their account is charged, no the app is deleted. The app dev can specify whether they want to allow the Try button and the amt of time they think would allow the avg user to adequately try the app.
    When I first got my iPad, I downloaded a bunch of PDF readers; some free, some cost a few bucks.  I ended up buying about $20 worth of apps before getting the one I wanted.
    A free trial system will hopefully encourage people to pay  prices they may otherwise balk at. If you have a good app, you have a better a chance at making a sale if your users can test it out first. The system is also upfront and honest. You don't download something for "free" and find it crippled IR nonfunctional until you make an IAP.
    Of course once a trial system is in place, there'll be tremendous pressure on all devs to use it for all apps. This may not be a good thing.
    2) upgrade pricing.
    This is desperately needed.  I bought filebrowser way back when for 99c and since then it's been updated tremendously, but I haven't paid any more for it. Seems a bit unfair.
    Devs are in the uncomfortable position of either giving a way a lot of effort for free if they stay with free updates, or alienate people who recently bought their app by creating a new version.
    In addition, retain at least one major old version so people who are satisfied can stay with it, or downgrade if the new version breaks something or changes something they don't like.
    All this adds complexity to the system. But hey, that's what good design skills are for, right?  Any average company can make simple stuff simple.

    Don't tell us (we're users just like you).
    Tell Apple at:  http://www.apple.com/feedback
    But I personally think your ideas won't get anywhere.
    The current system is working fine.
    Your ideas add too much complexity.
    Thousands of developers are making billions of dollars every year.
    There is no problem.

  • What order are Archive logs restored in when RMAN recover database issued

    Ok, you have a run block that has restored your level-0 RMAN backup.
    Your base datafiles are down on disc.
    You are about to start recovery to point in time, lets say until this morning at 07:00am.
    run {   set until time "TO_DATE('2010/06/08_07:00:00','YYYY/MM/DD_HH24:MI:SS')";
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    allocate channel d2 type disk;
    allocate channel d3 type disk;
    allocate channel d4 type disk;
    recover database;
    So the above runs, it analyses the earlies SCN required for recovery, checks for incremental backups (none here), works out the archivelog range
    required and starts to restore the archive logs. All as expected and works.
    My question: Is there a particular order that RMAN will restore the archive logs and is the restore / recover process implemented as per the run block.
    i.e Will all required archive logs based on the run block be restored and then the database recovered forward. Or is there something in RMAN that says restore these archive logs, ok now roll forwards, restore some more.
    When we were doing this the order of the archive logs coming back seemed to be random but obviously constrained by the run block. Is this an area we need to tune to get recoveries faster for situations where incrementals are not available?
    Any inputs on experience welcome. I am now drilling into the documentation for any references there.
    Thanks

    Hi there, thanks for the response I checked this and here are the numbers / time stamps on an example:
    This is from interpreting the list backup of archivelog commands.
    Backupset = 122672
    ==============
    Archive log sequence 120688 low time: 25th May 15:53:07 next time: 25th May 15:57:54
    Piece1 pieceNumber=123368 9th June 04:10:38 <-- catalogued by us.
    Piece2 pieceNumber=122673 25th May 16:05:18 <-- Original backup on production.
    Backupset = 122677
    ==============
    Archive log sequence 120683 low time: 25th May 15:27:50 Next time 25th May 15:32:24 <-- lower sequence number restored after above.
    Piece1 PieceNumber=123372 9th June 04:11:34 <-- Catalogued by us.
    Piece2 PieceNumber=122678 25th May 16:08:45 <-- Orignial backup on Production.
    So the above would show that if catalogue command you could influence the Piece numbering. Therefore the restore order if like you say piece number is the key. I will need to review production as to why they were backed up in different order completed on production. Would think they would use the backupset numbering and then piece within the set / availability.
    Question: You mention archive logs are restored and applied and deleted in batches if the volume of archivelogs is large enough to be spread over multiple backup sets. What determines the batches in terms of size / number?
    Thanks for inputs. Answers some questions.

  • How to recover database when all redo logs are losted

    pls help me in recovering the database when all the redo logs are losted

    In both cases he has to open the database in RESETLOGS option. So try:
    recover database until cancel;
    Then cancel the recovery, and
    alter database open resetlogs;
    If you want to check where your database is at then mount your database and issue:
    select group#, sequence#,first_change# from v$log;
    This will tell you the sequence and SCN of all the online log files then compare it with what it prompted when you issued recovery command.

    psynikk,
    I went to that link, but to get started downloading the site says...(and I don't have CS6, or else I wouldn't be stuck in this position. Thanks though.)
    Read before you download a CS6 product
    You need your CS6 serial number to complete the installation.

    I have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

  • Restored standby database from primary; now no logs are shipped

    Hi
    We recently had a major network/SAN issue and had to restore our standby database from a backup of the primary. To do this, we restored the database to the standby, created a standby controlfile on the primary, copied this across to the control file locations and started in standby recover and applied the logs manually/registered to get it back up to speed.
    However, no new logs are being shipped across from the primary.
    Have we missed a step somewhere?
    One thing we've noticed is that there is no RFS process running on the standby:
    SQL> SELECT PROCESS, CLIENT_PROCESS, SEQUENCE#, STATUS FROM V$MANAGED_STANDBY;
    PROCESS CLIENT_P SEQUENCE# STATUS
    ARCH ARCH 0 CONNECTED
    ARCH ARCH 0 CONNECTED
    MRP0 N/A 100057 WAIT_FOR_LOG
    How do we start this? Or will it only show if the arc1 process on the primary is sending files?
    The arc1 process is showing at OS level on the primary but I'm wondering if its faulty somehow?
    There are NO errors in the alert logs in the primary or the standby. There's not even the normal FAL gap sequence type error - in the standby it's just saying 'waiting for log' and a number from ages ago. It's like the primary isn't even talking to the standby. The listener is up and running ok though...
    What else can we check/do?
    If we manually copy across files and do an 'alter database register' then they are applied to the standby without issue; there's just no automatic log shipping going on...
    Thanks
    Ross

    Hi all
    Many thanks for all the responses.
    The database is 10.2.0.2.0, on AIX 6.
    I believe the password files are ok; we've had issues previously and this is always flagged in the alert log on the primary - not the case here.
    Not set to DEFER on primary; log_archive_dest_2 is set to service="STBY_PHP" optional delay=720 reopen=30 and log_archive_dest_state_2 is set to ENABLE.
    I ran those troubleshooting scripts, info from standby:

Well, as least for the last 4 years where it's worked fine, as I found an old SP file and it still has R1P set in there...?!?

  • SharePoint 2010, Visual Studio 2010, Packaging a solution - The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

    Hi,
    I have a solution that used to contain one SharePoint 2010 project. The project is named along the following lines:
    <Company>.<Product>.SharePoint - let's call it Project1 for future reference. It contains a number of features which have been named according
    to their purpose, some are reasonably long and the paths fairly deep. As far as I am concerned we are using sensible namespaces and these reflect our company policy of "doing things properly".
    I first encountered the following error message when packaging the aforementioned SharePoint project into a wsp:
    "The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters."
    I went through a great deal of pain in trying to rename the project, shorten feature names and namespaces etc... until I got it working. I then went about gradually
    renaming everything until eventually I had what I started with, and it all worked. So I was none the wiser...not ideal, but I needed to get on and had tight delivery timelines.
    Recently we wanted to add another SharePoint project so that we could move some of our core functinality out into a separate SharePoint solution - e.g. custom workflow
    error logging. So we created another project in Visual Studio called:
    <Company>.<Product>.SharePoint.<Subsystem> - let's call it Project2 for future reference
    And this is when the error has come back and bitten me! The scenario is now as follows:
    1. project1 packages and deploys successfully with long feature names and deep paths.
    2. project2 does not package and has no features in it at all. The project2 name is 13 characters longer than project1
    I am convinced this is a bug with Visual Studio and/or the Package MSBuild target. Why? Let me explain my findings so far:
    1. By doing the following I can get project2 to package
    In Visual Studio 2010 show all files of project2, delete the obj, bin, pkg, pkgobj folders.
    Clean the solution
    Shut down Visual Studio 2010
    Open Visual Studio 2010
    Rebuild the solution
    Package the project2
    et voila the package is generated!
    This demonstrates that the package error message is in fact inaccurate and that it can create the package, it just needs a little help, since Visual Studio seems to
    no longer be hanging onto something.
    Clearly this is fine for a small time project, but try doing this in an environment where we use Continuous Integration, Unit Testing and automatic deployment of SharePoint
    solutions on a Build Server using automated builds.
    2. I have created another project3 which has a ludicrously long name, this packages fine and also has no features contained within it.
    3. I have looked at the length of the path under the pkg folder for project1 and it is large in comparison to the one that is generated for project2, that is when it
    does successfully package using the method outlined in 1. above. This is strange since project1 packages and project2 does not.
    4. If I attempt to add project2 to my command line build using MSBuild then it fails to package and when I then open up Visual Studio and attempt to package project2
    from the Visual Studio UI then it fails with the path too long error message, until I go through the steps outlined in 1. above to get it to package.
    5. DebugView shows nothing useful during the build and packaging of the project.
    6. The error seems to occur in
    CreateSharePointProjectService target called at line 365 of
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.SharePoint.targetsCurrently I am at a loss to work out why this is happening? My next task is to delete
    project2 completely and recreate it and introduce it into my Visual Studio solution.
    Microsoft, can you confirm whether this is a known issue and whether others have encountered this issue? Is it resolved in a hotfix?
    Anybody else, can you confirm whether you have come up with a solution to this issue? When I mean a solution I mean one that does not mean that I have to rename my namespaces,
    project etc... and is actually workable in a meaningful Visual Studio solution.

    Hi
    Yes, I thought I had fixed this my moving my solution from the usual documents  to
    c:\v2010\projectsOverflow\DetailedProjectTimeline
    This builds ok, but when I come to package I get the lovely error:
    Error 2 The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters. C:\VS2010\ProjectsOverflow\DetailedProjectTimeline\VisualDetailedProjectTimelineWebPart\Features\Feature1\Feature1.feature VisualDetailedProjectTimeline
    Now, the error seems to be related to
    Can anyone suggest what might be causing this. Probably some path in an XML file somewhere. Here is my prime suspect!
    <metaData>
    <type name="VisualDetailedProjectTimelineWebPart.VisualProjectTimelineWebPart.VisualProjectTimeline, $SharePoint.Project.AssemblyFullName$" />
    <importErrorMessage>$Resources:core,ImportErrorMessage;</importErrorMessage>
    </metaData>
    <data>
    <properties>
    <property name="Title" type="string">VisualProjectTimelineWebPart</property>
    <property name="Description" type="string">My Visual WebPart</property>
    </properties>
    </data>
    </webPart>
    </webParts>
    .... Unless I can solve this I will have to remove the project and recreate but with simple paths. Tho I will be none the wiser if I come across this again.
    Daniel
