Gated event counting for a finite time

I am using a PCI 6110 card for gated photon counting. The digital signal is coming from a single photon counting module, which generates a single TTL pulse upon receiving a photon.  It also generates ~100 dark count /sec.  To get rid of the dark counts, I use gate pulses with very small duty cycle.  In this way, the dark counts are suppressed.  I want to operate for a fixed time interal with a resolution of ~1ms.  My gate pulses are at 800kHz.  Their duration is on the order of 10ns. Is there a way that I can perform gated counting for only 10000 gate pulses?  Thanks.

Hi UMeng,
Your question stirred up an interesting discussion at the office.  You can't do gated, buffered counting as the gate input is used to trigger the latch to the buffer.  We came up with a couple of ideas here, but neither are perfect.  It is important to also consider that you are running right at the specifed minimum pulse durations for the gate and source pulse durations for the 6110, which is 10 ns.

With that in mind, you could use an external high speed AND gate to generate a signal for a simple event counter to read using the laser gate and the photon detector output as input to the AND gate.
Otherwise, you could try doing gated event counting on the signal and simple event counting on the gate as long as the gate frequency is consistent.  Then you could use the frequency of the gate and number of counts of the gate to get the total acquisition time.  This will require that you start and stop both counter tasks at as close to the same time as possible.  The start could be triggered with an Arm Trigger.  Getting the values from the counters would always require 2 software calls, but the longer the acquisition, the less important this error would become.
Let me know if either of these sound appealing.

  • Gated-event counting using analog triggers?

    I'd like to software trigger gated-event counting with analog signals. eg. Use a comparison to check analog input levels to a 6024E card, once a trigger level is reached send a digital out from the 6024E to a 6601 gate to commence and terminate a counter of the 6601 card.
    I have found that the counter on the 6024E card is not stable enough for this application, but the NI-TIO cards work reliably.
    Any tips greatly appreciated,
    Alan

    Alan;
    In case you want to trigger a finite pulse train generation of an analog hardware trigger, you can still accomplish that with an e-series board only.
    You will need to use both general purpose counters available on the DAQ device though. The first counter needs to be configured as retriggerable pulse generation, having its gate being routed to the AI Start Trigger pulse of the Analog Input task. With that done, the counter will generate a pulse at its output at every time the Analog Trigger level is met. You, then, configure the second counter to execute a continuous pulse train and route the first counter output to the second counter gate input. That will make the second counter to generate a pulse train that will be "enabled" by the first counter. The p
    ulse train will be generated while the output of the first counter is on its high state level.
    Knowing that, you can configure the pulse width of the first counter to be as wide as you need the second counter to generate the pulse train.
    Hope this helps.

  • Gated event counting on 6602

    I am trying to use gated event counting or single pulse width measurement techniques to count TTL pulses on two counters during an external gate pulse. The problem is that if zero TTL pulses (a possible condition) go to both counters during the gate, the "armed" attribute does not seem to change from "yes" to "no", allowing the vi to kick out of a while loop and read the value that the counter stored.
    Is there a way of setting up the counters so that
    1) both counters only collect counts during an external gate
    2) zero counts are allowed
    3) the counters change state from "armed" to "not armed" at the end of the gate pulse regardless of whether there were TTL pulses on the source channel during the gate?
    Thanks,
    -Martin

    Based on your description of the application, I assume that you are using traditional DAQ. If you have an application where you sometimes expect to have zero source pulses between gates, you should enable synchronous counting (ND_COUNTING_SYNCHRONOUS) (referred to as "duplicate count prevention" in DAQmx). Many of the examples in traditional daq have this as an option that can be enabled on the front panel.
    I hope this helps!

  • Configuring retry count for failed recon events

    Has anyone managed to configure retry count for failed reconciliation events in OIM? By default OIM re-tries five (5) times before giving up the event. In most cases this is highly optimistic.

    I am confused about how to configuring OEM GC to utilize auditing and may not be asking the proper question. Is it merely enough to enter values for the various events or must I do something further to turn them on? I realize the question is vague but that is a function of my understanding.
    Thanks.Yes.. you are right .. You need to enable that metric by setting threshold(You can do it through template or manual) and then configure notification rule for the same.

  • Can I switch calendars (Ex. "night shift" to "day shift" cal) with a repeating event, but ONLY for that one event??  It asks "for all events or only this event" if i change the time.  But it changes ALL events when i try and switch calendars.  Any help??

    I have 2 calendars set up for my work schedule, a "night shift" and "day shift" calendar.  I've set up repeating events fro Fri/Sat/Sun 3-11pm "night shifts" and Mon/Tues 7am-3pm "day shifts".  But lets say for example that I swap shifts and instead of working nights on Saturday like I normally would, I am now working days.  I want to change that in my calendar.  When I go to change the event, if i change the TIME it asks if i want to change all event or ONLY this event.  no problem....just this single event.  but when i go to change the event from the "night shift" calendar to the "day shift" calendar, it changes ALL the repeating events, and not just that one single event.   can anyone help with this???  am i doing something wrong?  is there a way to do this or not with the new iCal program???  i used to do this and never had any problems.    Thank you!

    You need to follow iPhoto terms since we only know what you tell us
    what are you calling folders - in iPhoto folders can not hold photos - albums hold photos and folders hold albums or other folders
    The basic default view of photo is by event (iPhoto '08 and later)
    Exactly what you you trying to do?

  • How does iCal, or Calendar, order the display of multiple events for the same time?

    I can't for the life of me figure out how iCal orders the display of multiple items at the same time.  Does anyone have a clue?  It's not alphabetical.  It's not according the the order of the calendars in the left pane.  Is it just random?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    In the focus lost eventhandling start a thread which does
    the actual handling.
    the new thread waits for a little time (0.1 seconds)
    the click event of the button checks for a thread like the one above and tells it not to execute
    This way you execute the for the lost focus event only if
    the ok button isn't clicked in the same process ... not
    realy good, because it kind of relies on the ordering of threads ... but maybe it still works for you?

  • M-Series Buffered Event Counting with DMA -- gating problem

    Hi --
    I am implementing DMA-based buffered event counting on a PCIe-6259 board.  I use G0_Out as the gate for G1, which counts events on a PFI pin.   So by setting the speed of G0, I get an event count (either cumulative or non-cumulative) on a periodic basis, which is directly DMA'd to my buffer, and synchronized with other i/o operations.
    This is working well right now, except for one problem, which is that the I only get data if there is at least one  source edge between gates.  i.e. if there are no edges, nothing gets pumped to the dma buffer.
    I am guessing that a stale data error is somehow choking off the DMA transfer from the counter.   Is that possible?
    Is there some magic that I need to do to avoid this, because for this application, especially if I am counting cumulatively, I don't care about a missing edge, but I do care if the dma transfers get out of phase with the rest of my timing.
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Okay, I have it working now.  In addition to your suggested changes, I had to remove the following line:
    tio->G1_MSeries_Counting_Mode.writeG1_MSeries_HW_Arm_Enable(0);
    It appears that writing something to MSeries_Counting_Mode causes that register to supersede the Counting_Mode register.  Is that right?
    So code that now works for  me is listed below.

    Hi can anyone please help. My I Phone is in recovery mode. I have loads of pics and vids including my little girl counting to ten for the first time.
    Can I recover these files or have I lost them? I lost the phone last week and it was returned working but with an update to install I did this and it shut down.
    If anyone can please help I would be eternally in your debt I have loads of sentimental pctures in here but cant get to them.

    Sorry, but if it's in recovery mode, anything on the phone is already gone. If you had PhotoStream turned on, hopefully the photos will still be out there.
    You have no choice at this point but to restore from your last backup.

  • Can't get counter 2/3 working in simple event counting mode for NI6601

    I have been successfully been able to get counter 0 and 1 working in a simple event counting mode. But when I read Software Save register for counter2/3 it gives me garbage values. I am doing register level programming in C.
    This is the algorithm that I follow
    In initialization:
    -> Reset the Counter
    -> Write32( Clock_Config_Reg, 0x00)
    -> Write Load A and LoadB registers
    -> Write to Input Select Register with appropriate values
    -> Write16( Command_Reg, 0x0125);
    Then when I need to read the SW save register value
    -> Write to Command Register  setting the  gi_Arm bit
    -> Reading the SW save register twice
    -> If not equal ,read again
    -> Write to Command Register  disabling the  gi_Arm bit
    This works just fine for counter 0 and 1. But I can't get it working for counter 2 and 3. Are there any other registers I need to set up correctly for counter2/3. Is the default reset values of registers different for counter 2 and 3?
    Any help would be very appreciated
    Thanks

    Hello manisha,
    Is there a particular reason for using register level programming to interact with your DAQ card, rather than the DAQmx driver?  The reason I ask is because we don't support RLP at NI.  There are some manuals that have been developed, such as this one which corresponds to your card, but I am unable to offer any support after that.  If it is necessary that you must use RLP then you should post your question to the DDK forum, as they have more experience in this area.

    thanks in advance...That may be because your client is displaying only the first few records when you are running the "SELECT *". But when you run "COUNT(*)", the whole records has to be counted.

  • Event gets lost when iView is uncompressed for the first time

    Hi All,
    we are developing an application that manages attachments (meaning: files stored in KM) and per request by the client consists of several iViews. One of them contains a search interface, another one lists the hits that have been found. So the iViews have to communicate.
    We achieved the funcionality by using portal eventing and the HTTP session. The search iView compiles the search string and writes it to the session.
    request.getComponentSession().getHttpSession().setAttribute(searchString, .....);
    We then use javascript to fire an event on which the searchResult iView reacts and fetches the searchString from the session. The actual search is then performed within the searchResult-iView.
    The only problem is that the client requested that the searchResult iView should initially be collapsed. So we set its "initial display" property to "collapsed" and implemented some javascript functionality in the search iView that expands the searchResult iView when a search is performed:
    function openIview( iviewID ) {
      var temp = parent.pageSupport._getIvuPageId(iviewID);
      var ivuBankObj = parent.pageSupport._getIViewBank(temp);
      if (ivuBankObj.getToogle() == 0) {
        var trayid = ivuBankObj.getTrayId();
        var event = document.createEventObject();
        event.type = "click";
        if(parent.htmlb_TrcToggle(trayid,'0',event)) parent.pageSupport.ivuToogle(iviewID);
    We then fire an event:
    EPCM.raiseEvent('...', 'SearchEvent', param, '');
    All works fine, except for the very first time the searchRersult iView is expanded after the application (meaning the page containing the iViews) has been opened. The searchResult iView is properly expanded, but the event seems to get lost so that no search is being performed (no error, but no reaction by the iView).
    We observed that it seems as if the contents of the iView are only fetched by the browser when it's expanded for the first time. (The progress bar of the browser shows loading activity when expanding the iView for the first time). Supposedly the event gets lost because the serachResult iView doesn't fetch it since it's just being loaded.
    After this initial erroneous behavior, the iView can be in compressed or expanded state before a search is being performed and everything works fine.
    Interestingly enough the problem can be resolved by setting a timeout of several seconds after expanding the iView and before firing the search event. But we find this to be a very questionable (and inconvenient) method of solving this problem and would rather like to solve it properly.
    Does anyone have any ideas how we could achieve this? Is there a way to determine whether an iView has been loaded by the browser (because obviously displaying and loading an iView seem to be two different things)?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jens

    We introduced a boolean "isInitial" flag to the bean which we use to determine whether the iView is expanded for the first time or not. If so, there is a timeout of 2 seconds before the event is fired.
    Not really satisfactory, but working.

    I updated my iphone 5 to  ios 7 two days ago and I synced with my computer for the first time yesterday. Most of my calendar appointments and events were wiped off my phone but are still on the computer. I use outlook 2010 and a pc running windows 7. Rebooting the phone and the computer failed to remedy the calendar sync problem.

    Easy solution for restoring lost calendar informaiton, thank goodness.  On your iPhone, go to settings, then to iCloud.  If your Calendar selection is turned off,  turn it on.  Your info should restore.  If your Calendar selection is turned on, then turn it off.  Choose to save calendars when asked.  After it shuts the Calendar off, turn it back on.  Your info should be restored.
    Thank you to Apple support for walking me through this.  Shame on you Apple for not just telling people about this easy fix rather than making us go through all of this pain and worry.

  • I'm trying to use DAQmx for simple event counting using PFI8

    Hi,
    I am presently using Traditional DAQ (Legacy) drivers in my software, however I'm in the process of switching over to DAQmx drivers.  Our systems use an E Series DAQ card: PCI-MIO-16XE-10.
    I use PFI8 along with Counter 0 to do simple event counting.  The signal is connected to PFI8 and as it changes, my counter output either increase or decreases in value.  The attached vi shows how I've done it in the past using the Legacy drivers (top portion of the vi) and how I'm attempting to do it using the DAQmx drivers.  I've combined both versions on the single vi just for illustration purposes - when I do my testing they are on separate vi's.
    I'd appreciate it if anyone could help me to figure out why my DAQmx version isn't working properly.  Thank you very much!

    Hey Steve,
    The DAQmx driver installs several examples into LabVIEW that
    demonstrate how to implement various event counting applications.  I
    recommend you look over these and see if any of them accomplish what
    you're trying to do.  They're usually very simple to understand and
    well documented, but I'd be happy to help you out with any of them if
    you had a particular question.
    You can find them in the Example Finder (Help >> Find Examples)
    in LabVIEW.  Drill down to the following location in the directories:
    Hardware Input and Output >> DAQmx >> Counter Measurements >> Count Digital Events
    You'll see a number of examples, but I recommend starting with 'Count Digital Events.vi'
    Since PFI8 corresponds to CTR0 SRC, make sure you set it to use counter 0.  This should work correctly.

  • Repost (Amazon gift certificate for answer this time) NT Event ids

    Where can I find information about the different types of event ids (with numbers and descriptions, source tag, type) for what Oracle writes to the NT event log ?
    I offer a $25 gift certificate for the first answer.
    Thanks

    The note in question reads :
    When the Oracle Database Server service fails or fails to start with a pre-
    determined error code it calls the ReportEvent function to write an entry to
    the event log, Windows NT then passes the parameters to the event-logging
    service. This in turn then uses the information to write an EVENTLOGRECORD
    structure to the event log. Other errors are reported to the Alert.Log or
    related trace files.
    When the Windows NT event viewer application starts it uses the OpenEventLog
    function to open the event log for an event source. The event viewer can then
    use the ReadEventLog function to read event records from the log. ReadEventLog
    returns a buffer containing an EVENTLOGRECORD structure and additional
    information that describes a logged event.
