Generating JNLP file with servlet?

Hi all,
I want to pass in paramters from a hyperlink into a webstart application. Now I know this can be done with webstart 1.5, but using this is not an option for us. What I would like to do is to create a servlet that generates a JNLP file from any parameters passed into it on the hyperlink.
Has anybody done this? Is this possible? would there be any problems with this?
thanks,
J

That's running fine with us. That has been the way for us to transmit authentication information to pass inside the JNLP world.
Be very careful with your output, there's no validation at the client and errors created by wrong JNLPs can be really unpredictable. Do use the DTD to at build time to check the output!
The JNLP file will be downloaded every-time if you output correct headers...

  • Export/Import Process in the UI for Variations Content Translation is Generating CMP Files with No XML

    We have a SharePoint 2010 Publishing Website that uses variations to deliver contain to multiple languages. We are using a third-party translation company to translate publishing pages. The pages are
    exported using the  export/import using the UI process described here: "http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2011/12/02/sharepoint-variations-the-complete-guide-part-16-translation-support.aspx".
    Certain sub-sites are extremely content-intensive. They may contain many items in the Pages library as well as lists and other sub-sites.
    For some sub-sites (not all), the exported CMP file contains no XML files. There should be a Manifest.XML, Requirements.XML, ExportSettings.XML, etc., but there are none. After renaming the CMP file
    to CAB and extracting it, the only files it contains are DAT files.
    The only difference I can see between the sub-sites that generate CMP files with no XML files is size. For example, there is one site that is 114 MB that produces a CMP file with no XML files. Small
    sites do not have this problem. If size is the problem, then I would think the process would generate an error instead of creating a single CMP file that contains only DAT files. However, I do not know exactly what the Export/Import Process in the UI is doing.
    This leads to two questions:
    1.
    Does anyone know why some CMP files, when renamed to *.CAB and extracted, would not contain the necessary XML files?
    2. Second, if exporting using the UI will not work, can I use PowerShell? I have tried the Export-SPWeb, but the Manifest.XML does not contain translatable
    content. I have not found any parameters that I can use with Export-SPWeb to cause the exported CMP to be in the same format as the one produced by the Export/Import process in the UI.
    As a next step, we could try developing custom code using the Publishing Service, but before doing this, I would like to understand why the Export/Import process in the UI generates a CMP that
    contains no XML files.
    If no one can answer this question, I would appreciate just some general help on understanding exactly what is happening with the Export/Import Process -- that is, the one that runs when you select
    the export or import option in the Site Manager drop down. Understanding what it is actually doing will help us troubleshoot why there are no XML files in certain export CMPs and assist with determining an alternate approach.
    Thanks in advance

    I wanted to bump this post to see about getting some more responses to your problem. I'm running into the same problem as well. We're running a SharePoint 2010 site and are looking at adding variations now. The two subsites with the most content take a
    while to generate the .cmp file (one to two minutes of the browser loading bar spinning waiting on the file). Both files are generated with a lot of .dat files but no .xml files. I was thinking like you that it must be a size issue. Not sure though. Did you
    ever happen to find a solution to this problem?

  • Calling JNLP file via Servlet

    Hi Folks,
    I need to pass runtime parameters to my jnlp file from URL param, like ?requestNum=12345&mergeId=1.
    So I created a Servlet to process the request and add the requestParams at runtime in the JNLP file,
    In the doGet Method I have teh following piece of code,
    String[] args = new String[]{"requsetNum",request.getParameter("requestNum"),"mergeId",request.getParameter("mergeId")};
    response.setContentType("application/x-java-jnlp-file");
    PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
    //It writes the jnlp content prperly in console,          System.out.println(JnlpFileContentBase.readBeforeArgElementsContent()+JnlpFileContentBase.populateArguments(args)+JnlpFileContentBase.readAfterArgElementsContent());
    //I split the jnlp file content before and after the argument area out.println(JnlpFileContentBase.readBeforeArgElementsContent()+JnlpFileContentBase.populateArguments(args)+JnlpFileContentBase.readAfterArgElementsContent());
    out.close();
    But when i run on server the above the jnlp is not starting up,
    Am i missing something in the doGet method? is the PrintWriter out object is enough to write back the content?
    Please help me to find out what am missing out here.
    Thanks

    Hi Andrew,
    Thanks for notifying that, but that due to my testings with several combinations, I copied the file and kept direcly under WEB-INF and under the webapps/ElemFinder and several places to see it could be retried or not. And hence copied one of the errors. Nothing worked btw.
    I suspected initially it could be because of calling another jnlp file, but now i have my consolidated single jnlp file, but still have the FileNotFoundException for the jar file I have,
    sb.append("<jar href=\"WEB-INF/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.101.R34x_v20081125.jar\"/>\n"); // code from Servlet
    This is the firs jar resource under the resource elements
    Where I get the Exception,
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: http://localhost:8080/ElemFinder/ElemFinderEngineInvoker/WEB-INF/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.0.101.R34x_v20081125.jar
    I think its basically issues with reading the resource files,
    I tried with several options for this file either, placing under WEB-INF, under webapps/ElemFinder ... etc. Nothing seems to be working,
    Any entries to be put in web.xml for this?
    Pls help me to get rid of this....
    Thanks
    Subash
    PS: BTW i dint try in teh util u gave sice the jnlp already is downloading from my App, do you think still needed to check in the util?

  • How to generate SWF file with dynamic data but no live connection

    Hello,
    We got a requirement where we have to email out SWF file either in PPT or outlook generated from BOBJ universe. When the file reaches the customer who would be outside our network with no access to our servers or data should be able to view the swf file with data. So the goal is to generate these files automatically and should not prompt for BOBJ login or wouldn't have ability to query the database but need to report data pertaining to the customer.
    Any help in this regards is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Manohar

    Hi Manohar,
    You can use QAAWS(query as a web services) and build your queries on universe.
    You get an option of hardcoding the user id and password in the data connection for QAAWS which will not asks the users for login credentials.
    This will hepl the user to veiw the latest data from the database and the user wont be asked for login too.
    Thanks,
    Amit.

  • Generating XML File with Table data...

    Hi All,
    Bear with me, with my Oracle XML knowledge,,,
    we have Oracle 8i ( Relaease 3) as our database, and managegement want to have XML type of Text file, with respect to data in the Customer Table. Expected XML tags would be the Column Names of the Table.
    Table has three columns,, Name, Address, Telephone.
    So desired XML file looks like below:
    <Name>John Hunter</Name><Address> City Road, London</Address><Telephone>1223223</Telephone>
    If I deceided to do this task using PL/SQL, how could I start it,,,, All comments are welcome, this is the first time that I am going to generate this type of file ,,,

    Hi Chandana,
    You can check out the DBMS_XMLQUERY package for this purpose. It provides XMLType functionality in Oracle 8i. You can access the documentation for the same at:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/appdev.920/a96612/d_xmlque.htm#ARPLS066
    If you happen to have access to Oracle 9i, then you can use XMLType Views provided with XML DB for your requirement.
    Thanks

  • Form2xml generate xml files with "??????????" for non-latin characters

    i used form2xml in oracle 10 g suit to convert forms 5   .fmb to .xml . using the command:
    frmf2xml.bat OVERWRITE=YES myform.fmb
    The forms contains arabic character set, but the xml file is generated with character "????????? "  , and the xml file is unusable
    what can i do to keep arabic characters in the generated  xml files.
    Edit:
    I run form2xml on windows xp SP3 with arabic support (codepage =1256)
    The xml file is generated as UTF-8

    I resolved the problem.
    step1: search in the registry for every NLS_Lang key and modify its value to codepage 1256 using regedit
    step2: in control panel-Region and Language , I  modified language to be Arabic
    Now every thing is good

  • Generating war files with jdev

    Hi,
    I am trying to generate a war file with jdev and wish to exclude the connections.xml file from the war file. Is there any settings in the xxx.deploy file that I can change in jdev to do this?
    I am using 9i (v 9.0.3.4)
    Thanks

    Doesn't it come with a file called assembly.bat which launches the Java assembly tool. Webphere 4 does.
    That makes everything a lot easier.

    both the actions uses the file name "RWReportServlet" as default instead of using docName
    Can any one help me please
    Regards
    Sakthivel.

    That said, your code is not very efficient. You're storing the complete PDF file in memory. What if the PDF file is fairly large? And what if multiple users download multiple large PDF files simultaneously? Your server would run out of memory. Rather use InputStream instead of a raw byte[]. And preferably buffer it.
    You should also be setting the content-length header by the way.

  • How to customize automatically generated jnlp file

    hi !
    i am using sun application server 9.0.
    i have written an application client, and deployed it to the server.
    when i start the client via web-start, the application cannot load all classes, because there are some jars missing.
    my question: is there a way to customize the jnlp file generated by the server.
    especially to add some additional jars / extension packages ?
    thanks
    wolfgang

    JNLP will not allow Java Web Start to set arbitrary properties w/o knowing them to be secure.
    The built in list of known secure properties dosn't include this one.
    On a given client machine you can set a property in the deployment.properties file to allow this property in ther jnlp file:
    (in 1.5, or 1.4.2): deployment.javaws.secure.properties=java.net.preferIPv4Stack
    This will only help you out for the given client machine
    One way you might work around this is to create a small Extension Installer that adds this line to the clients deployment.properties file., but you'll have to sign the extension installer.

  • Opening files with servlet

    Okay... I'm new to using servlets. Not so much to jsp, just to using servlets. I have one process on our site that is using servlets and I'm trying to mimic how that is using em but am having no luck.
    I am trying to open files with a servlet. I have the class built and compiled, but mainly pulled it from Java World. I evenually will need to pass the servlet the filename and path I want open but in this example it has the file set. My problem is I want to send users to a jsp file where I check user authentication and call the servlet to open the doc, but I don't know how to call the servelet or what to send it. If someone could maybe walk me through this.
    Here's my servlet:

  • Generate trace file with required name

    hi all,
    as a sys user i want to trace a user session. so i am using
    SQL> EXEC DBMS_SYSTEM.set_sql_trace_in_session(sid=>123, serial#=>1234, sql_trace=>TRUE);
    SQL> EXEC DBMS_SYSTEM.set_sql_trace_in_session(sid=>123, serial#=>1234, sql_trace=>FALSE);
    to trace. but this trace file is mixing with another trace files in udump.
    did some google and found that we can use ALTER SESSION SET TRACEFILE_IDENTIFIER = "MY_TEST_SESSION". but this will generate trace file for sys user account not for the desired user session. how we can define trace file name for desired user session trace.
    Please let me...
    thanks

    >but this trace file is mixing with another trace files in udump.
    above is NOT true for any *NIX Operating System.
    The trace file name will contain the OS ProcessID#

  • How to get around safari no longer launching jnlp files with 6.0.3?

    I'm both a user of Java Webstart applications and a publisher (at work and for private projects)
    Given the latest update to Safari that no longer launches a JNLP file I've had no choice but recommend that my clients switch to Firefox or Chrome in order to continue using the Java Webstart applications.
    The fact that clicking the button or link to launch the JNLP appears to do nothing, that sometimes the JNLP is downloaded and other times not, and it never launches webstart,  makes it impossible to support clients and makes the applications appear completely broken.
    Is there no workaround to this? Some way to get Safari to run the JNLP file?

    For security reasons, WebStart application files are now downloaded to a hidden folder and are not launched automatically. Although you may find instructions on the Internet for defeating this protection, I strongly advise against doing so.
    The right way to launch a WebStart application is to click the Downloads button at the right end of the Safari toolbar and  then double-click the icon of the JNLP file you just downloaded. If you want to save the file for later use, click the magnifying-glass icon to reveal it in the Finder, and then move it.

    I changed default value of 'maxReceivedMessageSize' to non-default value, but i could not able to saw 'maxReceivedMessageSize' binding property in configuration file.
    Is anyone know why i am not able to see non-default value in configuration file.
