Generating outputfile on client machine.

Hi.
We all use various development tools such sqlplus, pl/sql developer, toad etc...
some time (most of the time) user comes with adhoc requirement.
so we write some code, (which we only know) and get the output.
so we 'spool' and dbms_output to write line.
dbms_output has buffer restriction.
is there any package which will write to client machine directly. (utl_file writes on db server, so it is not useful. text_io/client_text_io work inside forms)
regards

Simple answer no. How can server-side code (like PL/SQL) hack its way across a network into some unknown client platform (could be Windows, Linux, OS/X, etc), and break into that client platform's file system to write data to it?
More complex answer. Quite easy within the proper concepts of client-server. Top of the list is having the client use a browser to "access" the data - and the developers writing PL/SQL procedure that, instead of using DBMS_OUTPUT, uses the HTP package instead. In this case the PL/SQL code "writes"to a HTML buffer (page). This buffer is then rendered by the user's browser.
The components underneath this is Apache and MOD_PLSQL (Oracle's HTTP Application Server), or DBMS_EPG.
Even easier is using APEX - Oracle's Application Express.

  • Creation of CSV file on client machine with data from forms

    Hi,
    My requirement is to generate a CSV file(or .XLS) on the client machine ie local drive with the details shown in a form.
    Oracle version -
    Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
    CORE 11.1.0.7.0 Production
    TNS for Solaris: Version 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
    NLSRTL Version 11.1.0.7.0 - Production.
    I have searched the web for last couple of days and got to know that TEXT_IO is to be used to generate files on client machine. However, when I tried TEXT_IO, it was not able to generate the file on client rather it was able to generate on database server. After further browsing on this, there was a link which said that we need to use CLIENT_TEXT_IO to generate file on client side. For this, i was required to subclass the webutil.pll which i did and corrected the code to use CLIENT_TEXT_IO. The form was unable to compile and was not able to find "webutil_core" package.
    I am very confused with the disparity in the information available on the web as in what to use to generate a file on client side. If anyone has use it in the past, can he/she please detail what to use to get things sorted.
    Thanks,
    R

    So, what is your FORMS version. This is more important than your database version.
    My requirement is to generate a CSV file(or .XLS) on the client machine ie local drive with the details shown in a form. Depending on your Forms version, you would use TEXT_IO (if Forms 6i running in Client/Server mode) or WebUtil (if Forms 9i or higher).
    I'm going to guess that you are at least using Oracle Forms 9i since you stated that your attempt at using TEXT_IO produced a file on the DB server.
    There is more to using WebUtil than just attaching the WEBUTIL.PLL. If you had performed a simple search of the Forms Help System would have found numerous WebUtil topics to include: Introduction to WebUtil, Configuring WebUtil, Using WebUtil in Your Applications and the WebUtil User's Guide. If you have Oracle Forms release 10g or higher, WebUtil is included when you installed Forms, however, you do need to configure your installation to use WebUtil and you must download the Java COM Bridge (jacob.jar) from Source Forge. Take a look at the Configuring WebUtil Forms Help topic to find out which version of the Java COM Bridge you will need to download.
    After you have successfully configured WebUtil, take a look at the Using WebUtil in Your Applications topic to find out how to implement WebUtil in a form.
    Searching the Internet for answers is great, but don't forget the look at the Forms Help System because the majority of your questions can be answered there. :)
    Lastly, configuration of WebUtil is primarily done on your Application Server (AS). However, if you plan to perform preliminary runtime testing by running your Form from the Forms Builder, then you will configure your local runtime to support WebUtil as well as configure your AS. The steps are exactly the same. A common mis-step is to skip a step during the configuration because you don't think the step applies. Take a look at the Forms Help Runtime Setup Checklist topic for a list of step you need to complete in order to enable WebUtil.
    Hope this helps,

  • How to FTP a file from client machine to database server using forms 10g

    Hi
    I want to ftp a file from a client machine to the database server machine using forms 10G (or PL/SQL).
    could you please tell me how can I do this
    Regards

    hi
    How to get up and running with WebUtil 1.06 included with Oracle Developer Suite 10.1.2.0.2 on a win32 platform
    Solution
    Assuming a fresh "Complete" install of Oracle Developer Suite 10.1.2.0.2,
    here are steps to get a small test form running, using WebUtil 1.06.
    Note: Oracle_Home is used as an alias for your real oDS ORACLE_HOME.
    Feel free to copy this note to a text editor, and do a global find/replace on
    Oracle_Home with your actual value (no trailing slash). Then it is easy to
    copy/paste actual commands to be executed from the note copy.
    1) Download http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/jacob-project/jacob_18.zip
    and extract to a temporary staging area. Do not attempt to use 1.7 or 1.9.
    2) Copy or move jacob.jar and jacob.dll
    C:\webutile is the folder where you extracted Jacob, and will end in ...\jacob_18
    cd C:\webutile
    copy jacob.jar Oracle_Home\forms\java\.
    copy jacob.dll Oracle_Home\forms\webutil\.
    The Jacob staging area is no longer needed, and may be deleted.
    3) Sign frmwebutil.jar and jacob.jar
    Open a DOS command prompt.
    Add Oracle_Home\jdk\bin to the PATH:
    set PATH=Oracle_Home\jdk\bin;%PATH%
    Sign the files, and check the output for success:
    Oracle_Home\forms\webutil\sign_webutil Oracle_Home\forms\java\frmwebutil.jar
    Oracle_Home\forms\webutil\sign_webutil Oracle_Home\forms\java\jacob.jar
    4) If you already have a schema in your RDBMS which contains the WebUtil stored code,
    you may skip this step. Otherwise,
    Create a schema to hold the WebUtil stored code, and privileges needed to
    connect and create a stored package. Schema name "WEBUTIL" is recommended
    for no reason other than consistency over the user base.
    Open Oracle_Home\forms\create_webutil_db.sql in a text editor, and delete or comment
    out the EXIT statement, to be able to see whether the objects were created witout
    errors.
    Start SQL*Plus as SYSTEM, and issue:
    CREATE USER webutil IDENTIFIED BY [password]
    DEFAULT TABLESPACE users
    TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp;
    GRANT CONNECT, CREATE PROCEDURE, CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM TO webutil;
    CONNECT webutil/webutil@rcci
    @Oracle_Home\forms\create_webutil_db.sql
    -- Inspect SQL*Plus output for errors, and then
    CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM webutil_db FOR webutil.webutil_db;
    Reconnect as SYSTEM, and issue:
    grant execute on webutil_db to public;
    5) Modify Oracle_Home\forms\server\default.env, and append Oracle_Home\jdk\jre\lib\rt.jar
    to the CLASSPATH entry.
    6) Modify Oracle_Home\forms\server\formsweb.cfg insde [default] add :
    archive_jini=frmall_jinit.jar,frmwebutil.jar,jacob.jar
    archive=frmall.jar
    also add :
    [webutil]
    WebUtilLogging=off
    WebUtilLoggingDetail=normal
    WebUtilErrorMode=Alert
    WebUtilDispatchMonitorInterval=5
    WebUtilTrustInternal=true
    WebUtilMaxTransferSize=16384
    baseHTMLjinitiator=webutiljini.htm
    baseHTMLjpi=webutiljpi.htm
    baseHTML=webutilbase.htm
    archive_jini=frmall_jinit.jar
    WebUtilArchive=frmwebutil.jar,jacob.jar,f90all.jar
    archive=frmwebutil.jar,f90all.jar
    lookAndFeel=oracle
    7) Modify Oracle_Home\forms\server\webutil.cfg and add :
    transfer.database.enabled=TRUE
    transfer.appsrv.enabled=TRUE
    8) Start the OC4J instance
    9) Start Forms Builder and connect to a schema in the RDBMS used in step (4).
    Open webutil.pll, do a "Compile ALL" (shift-Control-K), and generate to PLX (Control-T).
    It is important to generate the PLX, to avoid the FRM-40039 discussed in Note 303682.1
    If the PLX is not generated, the Webutil.pll library would have to be attached with
    full path information to all forms wishing to use WebUtil. This is NOT recommended.
    10) Create a new FMB.
    Open webutil.olb, and Subclass (not Copy) the Webutil object to the form.
    There is no need to Subclass the WebutilConfig object.
    Attach the Webutil.pll Library, and remove the path.
    Add an ON-LOGON trigger with the code
    NULL;
    to avoid having to connect to an RDBMS (optional).
    Create a new button on a new canvas, with the code
    show_webutil_information (TRUE);
    in a WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED trigger.
    Compile the FMB to FMX, after doing a Compile-All (Shift-Control-K).
    11) Under Edit->Preferences->Runtime in Forms Builder, click on "Reset to Default" if
    the "Application Server URL" is empty.
    Then append "?config=webutil" at the end, so you end up with a URL of the form
    http://server:port/forms/frmservlet?config=webutil
    12) Run your form.

  • Accessing print services in the client machine(browser)

    Query: We had migrated a forms-3 form to forms-6i. The forms-3 form used a userexit to call a related Pro*C functionality that helped finally to print the report file generated during the process into the client machine's printer.
    How do we take care of this functionality in forms-6i? That is, the user should be able to do the printing from the forms screen in the browser..
    Please help..

    Thank you for replying..
    We have earlier tried the web.show_document procedure to call the .html or .txt file....But in forms-3(back-end on a UNIX server with the Pro*Cs), an ascii file was created at the server side in the client's home directory, and this file was accessed and used from the front-end machine(a UNIX terminal or a QVTTerm like application on Windows), to be printed out onto the printer device configured on the client machine...As in your reply, through web.show_document also the printing can be finally done..But the user has to wait for the new browser window to get opened and show the content and then print it...These steps were not needed in forms-3, that is, on a click of the print-related-button, it did the job...So, in the same way, can something be done on the forms-6i form(use a printer-javabean or something else), to get the functionality???
    Please help..

    This will be especially important if you are new to any of the products as you will likely need documentation and/or product updates in order to ensure the most stable environment possible.
    There are a few publicly available documents which may help to get you started. In any case, these are just examples. They may or may not work to your liking. Further, in some cases they may not work at all. Many of the examples online are often outdated and do not function exactly as documented against other versions. Here is one:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/forms/howto-ole-090332.html
    Additional documentation for using WebUtil is included in the Forms Builder online help. An update to the Builder Help files can be downloaded from here. Be sure to carefully review the included ReadMe before attempting to use them.

  • Saving report output on client machine

    Hi All,
    I'm using reports 6i. I'm running a report on the web which runs 5 reports inside it and it should save the outputs of these five reports in PDF format to the client machine. I can not give mime type as i don't want to show it in the acro. reader. What i want is, silently all these 5 outputs should get saved on the client machine and the main reports should say something like 'The reports generated and saved in c:\...... '. Can somebody help
    TIA
    Manish

    hello,
    what you can do, is to run the reports to file on the server in a directory, that is available as virtual path and then use e.g. javascript to fetch these reports.
    hope this helps,

  • How can I change java.policy at runtim on client machines using java webst?

    Hi,
    I have to change java.policy to launch my application through webstart to provide one RuntimePermission "permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "getClassLoader";"
    Its because of a bug in java bug "_http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4809366_"
    So, my problem here is, how can I do this dynamically on each client machine's java.policy.
    I have spent time on this and found some alternatives
    1. Specifying an Additional Policy File at Runtime by launching application "java -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=someURL SomeApp"
    Please refer more on this "http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/security/PolicyFiles.html"
    But, here the problem is, how can I do this using webstart (expert.jnlp) file even though I have the "java-vm-args" tag, its not supporting this argument.
    Please refer "http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/javaws/developersguide/syntax.html#security";
    2. Implementing the Policy in code.
    But, not sure how to do this..
    How can I grant the runtime permission on every user's machine dynamycally?
    Here are some background details on this:
    I am using java6 and weblogic 10.3.3.
    Here is thing that I tried,
    My application downloads a few jars to the client machines using java webstart and then it will get the initial context using the t3 protocal. The jars include wlclient.jar and ojdbc6.jar initially.
    The problem here I was facing, when I tried request a bean, it is giving me the following exception in the client logs.It is requesting one state less session bean and I checked the server logs as well and the bean has returned the expected values properly.
    But here I observed one more thing, before this request, one session bean(state less) has been requested successfully.

    I have tried one more thing, I have taken all the required jars to one of the client machines and executed the main class (by setting the required class path) from cmd using java instead of javaws. Surprisingly, its working fine with out any problem using the wlthint3client.jar.
    I also tried the same, by placing wlclient.jar using java in the same way(from cmd instead of javaws ), but I was facing the same exception while requesting the second session bean and found the same above exception in client logs.
    To resolve this, I come across the java bug that I have given earlier "_http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4809366_".
    In that page, I found a work around for this; suggested by bea to add the Runtime permission "permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "getClassLoader";" to the clients java.policy
    So, please suggest me a way to resolve this problem.
    Please suggest me if you have any other solutions for this problem.
    Thanks in advance :)

    I still think your problem is nothing to do with that ancient non-bug and that you should be looking elsewhere. You might be lucky and find someone here who can say "Ah, I know what that is" but I doubt it because since Oracle took over Sun this site has gone down hill big time.

    Q: I am familiar with SQL Server's .NET data provider, but am new to Oracle. Is it easy to learn to use ODP.NET?
    A: Yes. ODP.NET inherits from all the ADO.NET base classes, which is what SQL Server's .NET data provider, SqlClient, is based upon. The ADO.NET constructors, methods, and properties that you use with SQL Server will be the same with Oracle. For many applications, the only notable differences will be having all objects that were preceded with "Sql", such as SqlConnection, be preceded by "Oracle", such as OracleConnection, and accounting for differences between Oracle and SQL Server database data types, SQL, and stored procedure calls.
    Q: What are the different ways Oracle integrates with Microsoft .NET?
    A: Oracle integrates with .NET in a number of ways. For optimized .NET data access, ODP.NET enables access to all of the Oracle database's advanced features, such as RAC and XML DB, while ensuring the fastest performance from the .NET Framework.
    For .NET development tools that make Oracle easier to use, the Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET provide wizards and designers that auto-generate ODP.NET code and can browse and edit schemas and stored procedures. Additionally, it includes a Data Window to modify and view data and context-sensitive help.
    Beginning with Oracle Database 10g Release 2, developers can build and deploy .NET stored procedures for their Oracle database.
    For application integration, web services can facilitate integration between your existing Oracle and .NET applications.
    Q: Where can I find ODP.NET help and sample code?
    A: ODP.NET documentation is available from within Visual Studio .NET using Dynamic Help. Just hit the F1 key when your cursor is on an ODP.NET API and a help page for that API will appear right within Visual Studio .NET.
    Additional ODP.NET documentation is available both locally installed and from the ODP.NET documentation page.
    Sample code can be found both locally as part of the ODP.NET installation (e.g. c:\oracle\<Oracle Home Name>\ODP.NET\samples) and on ODP.NET samples page.
    ODP.NET users can ask questions on the ODP.NET discussion forum.
    Q: I have ODP.NET installed, but I can't find the ODP.NET Dynamic Help. Where is it?
    A: This behavior sometimes occurs when installing new Visual Studio .NET versions over an ODP.NET installation. To enable ODP.NET Dynamic Help, go to Visual Studio .NET Combined Help Collection Manager located in Visual Studio .NET 2002 or Visual Studio .NET 2003. Make sure the box next to the Oracle Data Provider for .NET Help is checked and click on the Update VSCC button. Close Visual Studio .NET and re-open it to enable ODP.NET Dynamic Help.
    Note: Because of security restrictions, you may need to copy and paste the links above to a browser, rather than clicking on them. Once copied to a local browser, if you have a Windows service pack that prevents active content (e.g. Windows XP service pack 2), you will need to allow active content to view the complete page. To do this, click on the yellow bar at the top of the Visual Studio .NET Combined Help Collection Manager page, which indicates active content has been blocked. Select "Allow Blocked Content". A security warning will show up. Click "Yes" and you will be able to view the page in its entirety, including having the option to incorporate the Oracle Data Provider for .NET Help into Visual Studio .NET.
    Q: What are the new features in this version of ODP.NET?
    A:
    ODP.NET 10.2.0.1.0
    Server-side ODP.NET for .NET stored procedures
    RAC client-side connection load balancing and automatic connection cleanup
    Database Change Notification
    LOB and LONG retrieval - faster data retrieval, InitialLOBFetchSize can be up to 2GB, and full LOB functionality when InitialLOBFetchSize > 0 (i.e. GetOracleClob and GetOracleBlob methods are enabled). These same features are now enabled with LONGs with its respective APIs.
    Connection Pool Management - explicitly clear connection pool(s)
    Client Identifier property for supporting application context security, such as with VPD
    Input REF Cursor parameters
    ODP.NET 10.1.0.3.0
    Statement caching
    DeriveParameters - automatic population of stored procedure parameters
    Cancel long running queries
    ADO.Net 1.1 interfaces - HasRows and EnlistDistributedTransaction properties
    LOB and LONG retrieval - Entire LOB and LONG column data can be retrieved even if the select list does not contain a primary key, ROWID, or unique key.
    ODP.NET 10.1.0.2.0
    Grid support
    Schema-based XMLType
    BINARY_FLOAT and BINARY_DOUBLE datatypes
    Multiple Oracle Homes
    ODP.NET 9.2.0.4.01
    Improved XML DB and XMLType support
    PL/SQL associative arrays
    connection pool validation
    InitialLOBFetchSize property to improve LOB retrieval performance
    Q: How do I make a feature enhancement request for ODP.NET?
    A: You can contact Oracle Support or use the ODP.NET discussion forum to make an enhancement request.
    Q: What features will ODP.NET support in future releases?
    A: In general, Oracle does not discuss features in future product releases until the release date nears. We are well aware of enhancement requests made through the ODP.NET discussion forum and Oracle support. We encourage Oracle users to continue to make their requests known. Oracle will do its best to fulfill these requests in future releases.
    Q: Do I need to install ODP.NET on my Oracle database server?
    A: No. You only need to install ODP.NET for running client or middle-tier .NET applications. The exception is if you are using .NET stored procedures in the database server. The server-side ODP.NET provider will automatically be installed with the Oracle Database Extensions for .NET.
    Q: Can ODP.NET work with Oracle8, Oracle8i, Oracle9i, and Oracle10g database (DB) servers? Can these DB servers be on Linux or Unix?
    A: Yes and yes. Oracle clients can support older and newer versions of the Oracle database. Consult the Oracle on Windows FAQ for more information.
    Oracle clients on Windows can work with Oracle database servers on any platform.
    Q: Can ODP.NET be used with an Oracle8, Oracle8i, or Oracle9i Release 1 client?
    A: No. You need to use the Oracle9i Release 2 or higher client.
    Q: What do I need to have installed on my client machine to have ODP.NET work?
    What needs to be on a client machine when running an application compiled with the 10g ODP.NET?
    The FAQ states the following :-
    A: You will require the following:
    Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, or Windows Server 2003
    Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 or higher
    Oracle9i Client Release 2 (9.2) or higher
    Oracle Net Services (included with the client)
    Oracle Services for Microsoft Transaction Server, Release 2 (9.2) or higher. This is required for applications using distributed transacations.
    This implies that ODP.NET does NOT need to be installed on a client. However, I cannot find OraOPs9.dll on a machine with Client Release 9.2 installed. Should OraOps?.dll automatically come with a Client installation of 9.2 or higher?
    Also, if an application is built with the 10g ODP.NET, can it be run from a machine with OraOps9.dll?
    I'd be very grateful for anyone who can clear up my confusion.
    Mick

    This implies that ODP.NET does NOT need to be installed on a client. However, I cannot find OraOPs9.dll on a machine with Client Release 9.2 installed. Should OraOps?.dll automatically come with a Client installation of 9.2 or higher?
    ODP.NET needs to be installed on the client. OraOps9.dll is part of ODP.NET, not the Oracle Client.
    Also, if an application is built with the 10g ODP.NET, can it be run from a machine with OraOps9.dll?
    If an application is built with 10g ODP.NET, it can be run with 9.2 ODP.NET as long as you do not use any 10g APIs. The new features in 10g ODP.NET are included in the doc and the ODP.NET FAQ for your reference.

    You're using java.io to write to local disk? This is indeed not going to work :)
    Provide it as file download. Set the content disposition to attachment and write the binary file contents to the outputstream of the response. You may find this example useful: [http://balusc.blogspot.com/2007/07/fileservlet.html].
