German iPhone 5 in U.S.

Can our exchange student use her German iPhone 5 here in Minnesota? What do we need to do to make that happen?

I really am flabergasted when I see a response like this. THIS IS A STUDENT WHO ALREADY HAS A PHONE. I don't know about current students, but I would bet there aren't many that would prefer to spend $600-$800 on a full retail price phone when they have one they are perfectly happy with. It is AMAZING you would even mention this. This is an exchange student, probably only here for a couple of months. To even suggest purchasing another phone for this period of time instead of letting Ann154's EXCELLENT advice stand on its own just BOGGLES THE MIND.

If officially unlocked, yes. Stop in any AT&T store when you get here to review your options. AT&T is the only GSM supported iPhone carrier in the US.

  • Is it possible to use my German iPhone on a British network?

I had my iPhone on contract in Germany but now it's paid off and I've moved to the UK. How can I use my british sim card in my german iPhone? Can I get it unlocked? Thanks

Yeah I emailed them today and they told me I've got to wait 24 months until they can unlock it but I've paid it all off. Found a website that will do it for me now for 50 quid so going to do that.
    Thank you
Be very careful. If they jailbreak the phone and unlock it, it may revert after you try to upgrade the firmware to a new iOS. As far as I know, the only safe way to unlock a phone is to have the carrier unlock it. All the other solutions are chancy.

  • German iPhone unlocking?

So, I lived and worked in Germany. I picked up an iPhone 3G from T-Mobile in Germany. I went back to the US and tried to get it to transfer over to T-Mobile USA but they said it won't work unless it is unlocked and they cannot unlock it. AT&T can't unlock it as well. So, now, I have this great iPhone that I can't use on any network in the US. This is stupid. Am I going to have to Jail Break my iPhone to get it to work?

Did you ever succeed in having T-Mobile unlock your iPhone? I am in a similar situation (German iPhone to be used in France), and I would like to know if yours is really a "success story", if you'd be willing to share some practical advice, and/or if there are any pitfalls to avoid. -- Thanks!

  • German Iphone using in the US with T-Mobile Sim. Help!

I have a german IPhone 5 bought in 09/2012. use it with German O2 carrier. now i'm in the US and I bought a prepaid sim from T-Mobile. but it does not work who can help me. normaly there should not be a simlock, because I bought the Iphone directly at Apple without any contract
what can i do, it is important that I can use it
    thanks for your help

You have already activated the phone with the T-Mobile sim card in it, which is why the phone has become locked to T-Mobile and whilst the phone is locked to T-Mobile, there is no way to re-activate it with another sim card.
It is not silly at all and this is where you needed to have done your research in full and ask those questions about the differences between unlocked phones and sim free/contract free phones and then you would have found this out.
There is nothing else that you can do.  What you need to do is contact T-Mobile in the US and tell them that you purchased the phone from the US Apple store and activated it with their sim card and the phone is now locked and request that they unlock it for you.  They may do it, but mostly they may tell you that you need to wait 40 days before they will unlock the phone for you.  Unfortunately, whilst you wait for the 40 days you won't be able to use the phone and there is absolutely nothing that you can do.
Also, if you are using this phone in Europe why on earth did you buy it in the US?  If you knew that you wanted to use the phone in Europe, why did you not go and buy the phone in another European country?  This would have made more sense, because countries like the UK sell unlocked phones in the Apple store and you will have EU warranty on the phone and you will most likely get 4G too, but with the phone you have now, you have found that you cannot use it and your warranty is only valid for the US and not the EU - iPhone warranty is not international.
There is nothing else that you can do now except contact T-Mobile in the US and request an unlock, but until they will unlock you will not be able to use the phone.

  • My US apps are not showing up on my German IPhone after setup and Sync

I have just moved to Germany.  Shortly after arriving I purchased a new IPhone 4S with a plan from Vodaphone to use in place of my 3GS that I had in the US.  I backed up my old phone and then set up the new phone.  I had to put in my German address and phone number and then of course the apple store info was all in German.  I can probably work through that but after sync'ing my new 4S, some of my Apps did not make it over.  I can see them in ITunes but when I reselect them and re-sync, it says the app cannot be found.  Not sure why I could use an app in the US and not be able to use it in Germany.  Am I missing something regarding setup that I should be doing differently?

Isn't iTunes 10.5 r 9 a beta release for developers?  If that's the case then isn't there a special web site for developers to discuss issues (and they are not supposed to discuss them on the public forum)?  If you're not a developer and have this through unofficial channels then I'm not sure you can expect full functionality.

  • German iPhone 4 using in Japan

    Hi there,
my wife will travel in August for three weeks to Japan. So far I've collected these information: GSM ist not available, UMTS in Tokyo - but NTT DoCoMo don't support UMTS. What other provider (Softbank ?) support UMTS?
Her iPhone 4 is not simlocked. She wants to use it for SMS and Mail in Japan and to Germany in these three weeks.
How about the costs of prepaid cards?
    Any information is appreciated.
    Thxia
    Herbert

The only way you would be able to do that is if you have AT&T unlock the phone. If you are out of contract, you may qualify. See this link from AT&T http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB414532&cv=820#fbid=6d7EKuCF_dr
If you qualify, here is the request link https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/

  • Home button on German iPhone question

    Hi,
after envying my american friends for what seemed an eternity, I finally got my iPhone on Friday here in good old Germany and LOVE it as expected...
Here's my question: in general settings it says I should be able to choose what I want displayed after tapping the home button twice... no matter what I do it will always display the home page...
no big deal but hey, if it's a feature we WANT it, right?

you probably aren't double clicking fast enough.
also, you can't choose anything you want, you can either have it display the homepage or your phone favorites.
if the ipod is playing music and you aren't on the music screen then double clicking on the home button will display controls for the music.

  • I just moved from Germany back to the USA. How can I use an German iPhone6 from T-Mobile  in the USA

I just moved from Germany back to the USA. How can I use an German iPhone 6 from T-Mobile  in the USA?

Was your phone locked to T-Mobile? If so, it needs to be unlocked before you can use it here. I believe you can use it with AT&T or T-Mobile here, but you won't get 4G/LTE speeds.

  • Synch iPhone Kalender mit Outlook funktioniert nicht

Synch of Outlook Calendar with Iphone 4 worked for several months. Then the triple Outlook 2007 (Windows) - iTunes - iPhone decided to change its behaviour.
For some reason they decided to quit syncing.
I set up iPhone from scratch, reinstalled iTunes. So far no success. meanwhile I believe I can reduce the whole thing to a name problem.
In Outlook it is called Kalender (german), iPhone/iTunes want´s to sync a thing called Calandar. I found no way to set the name right.
    Any ideas?

Eure Antworten waren schon sehr hilfreich.
    Matthias

  • I am in the military and will be moving to germany in a month. would the US bought iphone 5 work in germany?

i am in the military and will be moving to germany in a month. would the iphone 5 work in germany?

An unlocked GSM phone would work anywhere with any SIM card.  But, if the German iPhone 5 is th a1429-GSM only model, it will not work with AT&T nor T-Mobile's LTE frequencies here.  Similarly, the A1428 model sold for use with AT&T here may not work overseas as the LTE frequencies may be different then the two supported ones.
In terms of technology, 2 or 3 years is a looong time.  By the time you get back, the iPhone 5 will be ancient tech.  I would suggest you just get one in Germany so you know it will be fine over there.  When you come back in 2 or 3 years, sell it, donate it or whatever, and get something new that you again know will be fine for use here in the USA.
Plus that way, you could buy a contract subsidized German phone, and save on the initial cost of the phone.  If you buy from AT&T here, even if they will unlock it because of your service, what happens with the contract?  And if you buy an unlocked one (when they become available), ignoring the LTE compatability issues, you pay a lot more out of pocket for the phone.
No matter what you buy, it is going to be very, very behind the tech curve after 2 or 3 years (not to mention, it may well be needing a new battery, which might well cost more to replace then that old phone would be worth on the used market).

  • Iphone 5 green hue below the screen , is it will become worst ?

I want to ask about the green hue on the screen of iphone 5 after i wake it up from the sleep mode. does apple hve any answer to this? is it will become worst ? help me. i am worried that this has an effect in a long term . WE NEED AN EXPLANATION FROM APPLE A.S.A.P SINCE THIS PROBLEM IS FACED BY MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE GLOBE ! TAKE RESPONSIBILITY !

I've got the same problem and I found a couple of guys in a german iPhone-Forum who have the same issue as well... Seems to be something like a common hardware problem?! I wonder why Apple and their Genius'es don't know about it officially...?!
Does anybody got a feeling that the green hue accurs due to the use of some cases or other perpherals?! I first recognised the green light after receiving my new iP5-Case with a magnetic slider and after carrying my iP5 around in this case for a couple of hours. Since then I didn't use the magnetic-locked-case until now but the green light didn't stop appearing...
I already marked my iP5 for a replace because of the "Scratchgate" as soon as I'm back from holiday and I hope the new iP5 I'll get won't have the green lightning problem as well...

  • Will an iPhone work?

    Hi,
I have to sign up for a new cell phone contract in about a month. I am an American and I live in Germany. We do not know how much longer we will be living in Germany, but for now at least until next January. T-Mobile has an iPhone promotion going on. Since I have to sign up for a new contract I thought I might change phones. I would like to get an new iPhone. My concern is I want to use the iPhone I bought in Germany in the U.S. when I move back but not have to use the German service provider. I would like to deactivate the German service and sign up with a U.S. iPhone service provider, but be able to keep the same phone I bought in Germany. I do not want to have to buy a new iPhone.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks

You will need to buy a new phone when you come back to the US. The German iPhone is carrier locked to T-Mobile and the US iPhone is carrier locked to ATT.
